She won't testify!

Chuck Grassley: Kavanaugh accuser hasn't responded to invitation to testify

by Melissa Quinn
| September 18, 2018 10:26 AM
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said Tuesday that Christine Blasey Ford, a California professor who accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, has not yet accepted an invitation to testify before the panel.

Grassley told radio host Hugh Hewitt during an interview that the Senate Judiciary Committee contacted Ford three to four times via email over the last 36 hours regarding the upcoming public hearing, scheduled for Sept. 24. The committee, however, has not yet heard back from Ford, Grassley said.

“It kind of raises the question: Do they want to come to the public hearing or not?” Grassley told Hewitt.

Porch from the last thread:
Personally I think it's best if Ford testifies because I think her story will crumble further when she's on the stand.

Even if breaks down on the stand like the perp in a Perry Mason episode, it won't play that way in the media. It will be a bunch of white men bullying a victim.

Porchlight

Of course Mark Judge, who has a memoir of his days as an alcohol abuser in high school, would almost surely be a disaster for Kavanaugh.

TM, did it occur to you that maybe the fact that Judge's high school drinking (with Kavanaugh) is public knowledge is the reason his name was added to this little tale?

What would you do if you were making up an story about Kavanaugh from decades past?

You would search online for some kind of vice or chink in his armor.

And Judge's name would be in most of your search results.

And you would be as vague as possible about the date and location of the incident, in order to prevent Judge and Kavanaugh from being able to prove they were elsewhere at the time.

Porchlight

It will be a bunch of white men bullying a victim.

Too bad. If the story isn't dismantled we're caving to the left.

Voters will be more likely to forgive the alleged bullying than they will forgive the failure to confirm.

Jane

This goes directly to the video:

James D.

I would really like to see someone in Washington state the obvious, loudly and without apology

We are talking about something that might or might not have happened for two minutes between a pair of drunken high school students at a kegger 36 years ago! What the eff is wrong with everyone?

Porchlight

I know, James D. It's ridiculous.

Captain Hate

We've already caved to the opposition.

Tom R

The Kavanaugh/Ford kerfuffle IMO is nothing more than an obvious sign that the Democrats are in full scale desperation mode. Trump and the MAGA agenda are kicking their asses in every possible way imaginable. I don't know what they thought they could accomplish by trying to derail the Kavanaugh nomination at the last minute but to me its clear they weren't thinking very logical. If the Democrats force Kavanaugh to withdraw then the replacement pick is going to be someone even more conservative than him.

In the end this will likely blow up in the Democrat's faces and Trump will come out winning yet again.

jimmyk

Too bad. If the story isn't dismantled we're caving to the left.

I suppose, but it will be a spectacle. The alternative is to say, "Too late, you had this for two months, it's obviously a fraudulent last-ditch attack with no evidence," and proceed with the vote. Even if it's voted down in committee because of Flake, it can still be brought to the floor if McConnell has the votes.

And there is a risk the spectacle will cause the nomination to collapse. She could come off as sympathetic, Kavanaugh could trip on his words--there's lots of down side.

narciso

You would need a major slade from scent of a woman to do that.
Just more shadows on the cave wall.

James D.

The alternative is to say, "Too late, you had this for two months, it's obviously a fraudulent last-ditch attack with no evidence," and proceed with the vote.

Yes. That is what should have happened.

Followed by a referral to the Senste Ethics Committre to investigate Feinstein for obstruction of justice or whatever we can call it, for sitting on the accusation and using it for partisan political advantage.

Followed by stripping any wobbly GOP senators of committee assignments and campaign funds as punishment for their behavior.

Sue

I don't think the woman thought she would have to testify in public. Roy Moore's accusers didn't.

maryrose

Sue:
You are correct.
I also feel they should have said too little too late we are going to vote on it as planned on Thursday.
I don’t see it as being derailed.
I agree with art in Newport.
I believe they have the votes.
Also agree with Captain wrt caving into the Left.
We have to stop doing that.
For what it is worth, at this point I dont think she will testify.
Grassley needs to play hardball.
Respond by Wednesday morning Ms Ford or we go ahead and vote as planned on Thursday.

Old Lurker

I think I can save a lot of time just allowing James to post what I am thinking.

derwill

She can’t afford to testify. Kavanaugh hired a shark of a lawyer who’s specialty is defamation suits. There’s a reason why when cops interview a suspect they ask the same questions over and over—if you’re lying it’s impossible to remember all the details of exactly what you said before. She won’t have gotten any sleep the night before and she’ s so full of Trump hate her emotions will take over her reason. Too much risk she’ll torpedo herself at some point. If her own lawyer has have a brain, she’s trying to figure out a way to get her out of it.

Extraneus

if Rosenstein refuses to comply with Trump's declassification order or resigns in protest that is a sign Rosenstein is a Black Hat and that if Rosenstein complies with the order then that is a sign Rosenstein is a White Hat?

Yes to the former; not necessarily to the latter.

derwill

Also, I agree with with Sue. They thought the accusation would be enough. That either Kavanaugh would take himself out or Trump would withdraw him. Because that’s how it always worked in the past with the GOPe.

Jane

Kavanaugh's lawyer won't be asking questions in a congressional hearing.

Old Lurker

She will not testify. Only is a downside to her team and her personally and that side does not care about "real facts" or "real evidence" anyway.

Whatever happens I would love (but will not) see a $10M Defamation suit against her with all the discovery, all the fears, and all the costs they like to impose on our side, every time they can.

And like James said days ago, a full scale launch against all matters Feinstein and her husband should be the price she pays. Like right now, dammit.

Sue

James Woods on twitter asking Rep. Eric Swalwell in re Trump declassifying documents..."Not so much fun when he’s Spartacus, is it?".

Ha!

Porchlight

Well, if she refuses to testify, then Grassley says "okay, we gave you a chance, you refused to talk to us, so we're having a vote now."

This is better than if Grassley had proceeded immediately to a vote, in which case she would have claimed she wanted to testify and wasn't able to because the Republicans were trying to squash her story.

Now she looks like she can't defend her story and is running away.

maryrose

Grassley has floated the idea that a single person, an investigator will ask the questions.
It is one possibility.
Derwill:
Absolutely correct.
TomR;
There is no way Rosenstein can stop the declassification President Trump has ordered.
I totally agree with the Ohr information being the crucial element to blow the sedition wide open and also impact the largest number of people.

Old Lurker

Jane, remember the Godfather scene where they flew in the brother from Sicily to send a message to the witness, and it worked? Just having one of the countries top killer litigators sitting there taking notes would scare the cr*p out of me if I were spinning a tale on camera.

She is not a Potted Plant... (to steal another great line).

maryrose

Sue’s comment by James Woods wrt Smalwell and Spartacus is today’s winner!

Porchlight

This appears to be Ford's sister, Lisa Blasey, for what it's worth.

Alleged toddler abuse at a Montgomery County daycare (a branch of a chain partly owned by Lamar Alexander). Blasey was the center's director. She didn't report the abuse to the national hotline; she called corporate instead.

Would love to see her complete disgrace and for her to lose the Senate seat.
That would be justice!

maryrose

Porch:
The whole family is rotten.

Extraneus

Anyone know what's going on with the declassifications?

Captain Hate

If the Senate wished to restore a bare shred of dignity left over from the 17th amendment, they'd ban television cameras from the Supreme Court nomination committee hearings. And not have any audience present; just the nominee, the committee and a court recorder to release a transcript at the end of the hearings.

The country did just fine, give or take a civil war, without television cameras and this would be a significant step to restoring a scintilla of decency to what has become an embarrassing freak show.

Old Lurker

Maryrose, the sooner someone makes one of these "pillars of the Senate" (from either party, frankly) face the wrath of Justice for what they get away with, the better our Republic will be.

Imagine McCain going to jail for the Keating Five thing and how much damage me might have avoided. Imagine a Senate without Ted Kennedy. Or Harry Reid, or so many others who got fat, dumb and rich while rising through the ranks there.

Old Lurker

Lucianne: "...Kavanaugh´s accuser is being represented by Debra Katz, a Washington D.C. lawyer and the vice chair of the board of the Project On Government Oversight. POGO co-signed a letter to Senator Dianne Feinstein and Senator Grassley along with a variety of lefty groups demanding Kavanaugh records. This was the obstruction tactic of choice of the left for trying to secure the Court seat before they fastened on to this latest smear. Where does PGO gets its funding? From, among other sources, George Soros and his Open Society Foundation tentacles."

Sue

Twitter suspended some woman for calling the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization? And someone adds me to a terrorist watch list and nothing happens to them? WTH? I'm offended!

ABC News Chief Political Analyst Matthew Dowd Alleges Clarence Thomas Is a ‘Sexual Predator’

It was despicable and outrageous what happened to Anita Hill more than 25 years ago, and a sexual predator was given a lifetime seat on the SC. Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself in 2018.

— Matthew Dowd (@matthewjdowd) September 17, 2018
Jane

"Whatever happens I would love (but will not) see a $10M Defamation suit against her with all the discovery, all the fears, and all the costs they like to impose on our side, every time they can."

Well Kavanaugh is a public figure so out doubt he would prevail under Sullivan unless they can prove she knew it wasn't him and defamed him on purpose. But it sure would be fun to watch - but not to go thru.

Extraneus
On Monday, Dowd also tweeted out how eager he is to bring back the days of witch hunts where every accuser is believed unconditionally.

“Enough with the ‘he said, she said’ storyline. If this is he said, she said, then let’s believe the she in these scenarios. Dowd howled in reference to Kavanaugh. “She has nothing to gain, and everything to lose. For 250 years we have believed the he in these scenarios. Enough is enough.”

James D.

Where does PGO gets its funding? From, among other sources, George Soros

Wow, there's a shock.

maryrose

OL:
Of course.
Follow the money.
It reveals motivation and purpose.
They will be thwarted again and once again underestimated President Trump Grassley and McConnell and in addition Kavanaugh.
This is the do or die moment.
Stand up to the prog bullies or perish!

Extraneus
ABC News advertises Dowd as a man of principle above party politics, but a good faith search found no record of him describing Democrat Party Deputy Chair Keith Ellison as a sexual predator, nor is there any record of Dowd calling for Ellison’s accusers to be believed. Eillison is currently running to be the attorney general of Minnesota.

What’s more, Dowd is virulently anti-Trump, anti-NRA, pro-Medicare for all (which is socialized medicine), regularly defends Planned Parenthood, and has already endorsed Democrat Beta O’Rourke, who is running to unseat Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas.

Clarice Feldman

I'm with porchlight.

lurkersusie

Democrats want a circus.

Here's Feinstein's full statement:

Chairman Grassley today said there would be only two witnesses invited to testify at the Kavanaugh hearing next week on sexual assault allegations. Compare that to the 22 witnesses at the 1991 Anita Hill hearing and it’s impossible to take this process seriously.
What about other witnesses like Kavanaugh’s friend Mark Judge? What about individuals who were previously told about this incident? What about experts who can speak to the effects of this kind of trauma on a victim? This is another attempt by Republicans to rush this nomination and not fully vet Judge Kavanaugh.

James D.

Dowd also tweeted out how eager he is to bring back the days of witch hunts where every accuser is believed unconditionally.

Maybe some conservative outlet with spare cash can start trolling around for people who will testify to sexual harassment they experienced, or observed, or heard about third-hand, at ABC News.

derwill

Yes I know the lawyer won’t be asking questions at the hearing, but what Ford says at the hearing could be used by Kavanaugh’s lawyer to impeach her later, and her own lawyer would be well aware if that. Oh what a tangled web we weave . . .

maryrose

Ext:

She has nothing to gain, and everything to lose.

Oh yeah? Anita Hill has been doing quite well since 1991, and she didn't even succeed in bringing down Clarence Thomas.

Extraneus

Btw, why is this lady simply "invited" to testify rather than subpoenaed?

I know. The Senate rules require Feinstein to sign off on subpoenas.

Clarice Feldman

Hilarious statement by DiFi about respecting the process.

Porchlight

I see on the vile memeorandum sidebar that the aforementioned Anita Hill has an oped in the failing NYT: "How To Get The Kavanaugh Hearings Right."

lurkersusie

She's nuts.

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) said the Democrats could keep retired Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy's seat vacant for two years if need be should the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to replace him fail and should Democrats take the Senate in November.

Hirono said if a replacement for Kavanaugh needed to be found, President Trump should nominate a less conservative ideologue, or else be ready for Senate Democrats to keep the court seat vacant until after the 2020 presidential election if they win the chamber in November, according to an interview with Politico Magazine.

Right now, everybody is saying what a great job we are doing with Hurricane Florence – and they are 100% correct. But don’t be fooled, at some point in the near future the Democrats will start ranting...

...that FEMA, our Military, and our First Responders, who are all unbelievable, are a disaster and not doing a good job. This will be a total lie, but that’s what they do, and everybody knows it!

Old Lurker

Alas, their brains work just fine. But they are evil people pursuing evil goals.

Captain Hate

Anita Hill has been doing quite well since 1991, and she didn't even succeed in bringing down Clarence Thomas.

What I want FIRST is a special prosecutor to investigate Feinstein for her husband getting paid government money, and her and all of her staffers investigated for espionage in their relationships with China and other foreign countries.

I want the prosecutor named this week, and the investigation to start immediately. Oh, and I want Feinstein stripped of access to any and all classified data until it’s done.

Old Lurker,

I agree EXCEPT that there is lots of stuff being dug up about her, even thuogh she scrubbed her social media accounts. If the dems are paying attention to that they are weighing whether it is better to risk her being unmasked on live TV or just not show up.

Apparently her attorney has submitted "conditions."

fdcol63 🇺🇸

Personally, I think this Ford story was ready to go as far back as 2012, in case Romney won.

And if they've been sitting on it all this time, they've had time to prepare all kinds of corroborating "witnesses".

derwill

Didn’t she say in her original story that there were no witnesses? And are all the “witnesses” going to claim that they too can’t remember where or when this awful attack took place.

The difference between this and Anita Hill is that there were details in Hill’s story that were easily provable as true, especially the fact that they had a professional relationship, even if the underlying accusation was not.

Thomas Collins

Re Ford not contacting McConnell: I think Ford was part of this scheme all along, and that the scheme didn't involve Ford testifying. It was a scheme to be activated if borking Kavanaugh at the hearing failed. DiFi then released the letter that she knew would generate much press coverage and provide a fig leaf for Dems to demand more hearings and investigations. The idea is to make at least two GOP Senators nervous enough that Kavanaugh would need to withdraw or lose the vote in the full Senate. The last thing DiFi, the Dems and Ford want is for Ford to testify. If GOP folds on this one, don't count on another Trump SCOTUS pick getting through even if GOP holds the Senate.

BlueOx

We are less than two weeks removed from yet another attempted assassination of a Republican politician, and there are people claiming she couldn't possibly be lying because nobody would do anything so risky?

Thomas Collins

Real investigative journalism would be focusing on Ford-DiFi/Dem links before July of 2018.

maryrose

Dems are in no position to make demands as they are in the minority.
We have enough Repub votes to get him on the bench.
Let us go for it without them.If forced for some reason hold the hearing it must be Monday.

fdcol63 🇺🇸

" ... The idea is to make at least two GOP Senators nervous enough ..."

Probably the 2 female Senators, Collins and Murkowski. They could be expected to get grief from their female constituents if there was any doubt in the "he said/she said".

Jack is Back!

If you are lame duck Republican Senators, what do achieve by doubting their vote? Among the Right, McCain damaged his reputation and legacy (if he ever had one with the Right) with his dramatic entry into the chambers with a thumb down for ACA reform as if he was Caligula at a gladiator tournament.

But Trump is non-plussed in his presser introducing Duda (no, not that DuDa) the President of Poland.

[Back to the Champions League]

BlueOx

But as you know, they say this is not really their thing. The Senators will do a good job.”

Trump said “Judge Kavanaugh is very anxious to [testify]” but that “this should have been done a long time ago,” referring to Senator Feinstein, who sat on the allegations for weeks before Kavanaugh’s public hearing.

“The fact is … when Senator Feinstein had Judge Kavanaugh in her office for a long time, she never even mentioned this, it was a long time ago,” Trump said.
