The new movie celebrating Neil Armstrong as the first man on the moon slides right past the planting of an American flag on the moon. Forget it, Jack, it's Hollywood and waving the flag is for redneck rube Trump voters, amirite? Anyway, the moon landing was a human achievement, not an American one. Set aside that Kennedy had announjced a space race against the Soviets, who had an early lead due to their expertise with heavy rockets. Sputnik and Yuri Gagarin had challenged American know-how and Kennedy responded with a race to the moon. But humanity won!
But forget Kennedy. By the time Nixon was there to congratulate the astronauts we were a different country. Here is E.B. White writing in the New Yorker back in July 1969:
The moon, it turns out, is a great place for men. One-sixth gravity must be a lot of fun, and when Armstrong and Aldrin went into their bouncy little dance, like two happy children, it was a moment not only of triumph but of gaiety. The moon, on the other hand, is a poor place for flags. Ours looked stiff and awkward, trying to float on the breeze that does not blow. (There must be a lesson here somewhere.) It is traditional, of course, for explorers to plant the flag, but it struck us, as we watched with awe and admiration and pride, that our two fellows were universal men, not national men, and should have been equipped accordingly. Like every great river and every great sea, the moon belongs to none and belongs to all. It still holds the key to madness, still controls the tides that lap on shores everywhere, still guards the lovers who kiss in every land under no banner but the sky. What a pity that in our moment of triumph we did not forswear the familiar Iwo Jima scene and plant instead a device acceptable to all: a limp white handkerchief, perhaps, symbol of the common cold, which, like the moon, affects us all, unites us all.
Whatever. This is how you get more Nixon.

A blonde police officer pulls over a blonde
The police officer asks the blonde, "Can I see you license and registration, please?". The blonde then asked, "What is that?", the police officer says, "That thing with your face on it", the blonde then pulls a mirror out of her purse, and hands it to the police officer. The police officer then says, "Oh, my bad, if I knew you were a police officer I wouldn't have pulled you over."

Jim nj, I have very high arches, narrow heels and achilles, and protruding ankle joints, so shoes have never fit well, even when I could find men's narrow. I blister easily if the shoe moves, so I've always kept them tight for exercise walking.
The podiatrist made the orthotics 3/4 length so I could easily put them in other shoes, but it lets them move a bit sometimes. One of these days I'll figure out what to wedge in the shoe to keep them perfectly still.
The first week I used them I felt knock-kneed, but now it feels normal and the knee doesn't wobble. The shoe feels like it wants to roll under on a right slope, but it's better than it was without the orthotic.

This is why it's unlikely that we can do a deal with Canada. Trudeau sees union boss Trumka on his side and other Americans whom he assumes will side with him And he is willing to wait for his deal. Idjet.

Ralph,
Understood. Suburban streets are fine with me because they're usually flat. NYC streets drive me batty cause they are pitched to get rid of rainwater.
I can walk down one side of a NYC street and I'm fine. If I walk on the other side it's pitched wrong for me and my left knee suffers.
Even some suburban streets are pitched wrong. Even with orthotics I only get a partial solution. Sounds like what you're getting.
There are companies that have anti-pronation shoes, but they're ugly as sin. I tried one with a nubuck black finish. It's like flat black. Didn't work out. I felt like I was standing in my shadow, if you can understand how disconcerting it is to wear a flat black shoe.
In my New Balance sneakers I take a EEEE, so I can't well relate to narrow feet.
It's a process, or a journey, a learning experience, whatever, keep your eye open for better solutions. Spend time on the net looking for answers. I found a lot here.
Sorry to say but I found a lot of charlatans trying to resolve this.

Thanks! We live in a food desert. I drive over 3 miles to the nearest Kroger. (There is one slightly closer but I don't like it's layout.) The only other places to buy food are a few fast food joints near the college south of me and a couple of drug stores which sell a few snacks and canned goods.
Indianapolis was hit pretty hard by the closing of the local Marsh grocery chain. The small mom and pop stores closed back in the 80's, for the most part. They couldn't compete price-wise with Kroger.

Have any nominees brought minors before? I haven't watched CSPAN in years, but I suspect it's unusual. One of them looked pre-teen.

Judge Roberts, I can think of right off the back.

The "handmaidens" in the hall outside of the hearing room was the moonbat icing on the cake. *eyeroll*

Fired head of elections agency (follow on to the GAB) won't leave. Must be an election to try to rig coming up.
Several emails released in a lawsuit against the GAB show Haas’ involvement, from the inception of John Doe II, which targeted dozens of right-of-center groups and individuals. Yet, the bureaucrat continued to insist that the GAB, John Doe partner to the highly partisan Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office, did nothing wrong.

his kids were so young at the time i don't think they were at his hearing.
can't believe we're even talking about this. A sitting judge and nominee for the Supreme Court can't take his family to the Congress without fear of attack?

Ralph L.
I don't see anything wrong with bringing children to see their father's opening statement supporting his nomination for the supreme court.

The family were "safer" there than any public location in DC. So the argument on that point is deflection.
Who gets the blame for making his parents cry?
Let's argue about that instead.

This is, for some reason, not behind the paywall.
Ignoring complaints of child sexual abuse seems to me to be a pretty bad thing. That pedophilia thing keeps resurfacing, doesn't it?

Robin giwhan snarled at them, in her green cloud of gloom.

The House and Senate are moving at a brisk pace to pass the appropriations bills, with the Senate leading, approving nine of 12.
Trump gets credit.
