For two years Democrats have asserted the president should never influence FBI decisions and has no right to give FBI instructions.

Then, in the span of a week, those same Democrats demanded that President Trump MUST IMMEDIATELY start influencing and instructing the FBI.

hoyden

Oh, Larwyn'd!

Here's a short summary of Democrat's strategy.

Because our smear machine will reach back to middle school if necessary. If we can’t find any dirt on you, we will manufacture some. There is no depth to which we will not stoop, and your honesty, integrity and spotless reputation are no match for our control over the media and our determination to dredge up ridiculous allegations against anyone who stands in our way.

The Democrats are telling us: Republicans, beware–if this can happen to Brett Kavanaugh, it can happen to anyone. You’d better go quietly and cede power to us.

MM,

I am very happy that your daughter is happy. Totally, I just wish she had done her homework first. She'll have to do it now. I hope she has no problems.

Let me set the stage for you. It is the recent Anchorage municipal elections. It is cold, it is chilly, it’s Anchorage, and there are municipal propositions: one of them is about local cops being able to issue parking tickets. There’s also Proposition 1 (Prop 1), which attracted $900,000 in spending, dwarfing every other election by a country mile.

What’s Proposition 1?

Prop 1 was put forward by an organization called ‘Alaska Family Action’, and the aim of Prop 1 was to make bathrooms, once again, sex-segregated instead of being based on self-declared gender identity. Anchorage’s bathrooms had been segregated by gender identity since 2015. The left-leaning media reacted in cacophony against this new ‘bathroom bill’, and hundreds of thousands of dollars from reasonable people flowed into Anchorage to defeat a municipal ordinance proposal that would harm trans people. Common sense and reason won, and the liberal project continued, with the rights of transgender people to use the bathroom, re-affirmed.

The only positive note is the only other time it was this big a deficit, the USA came back to win the whole enchilada.

So, from now on, the rallying cry is "Remember Brookline".

Flake thinks he’s presidential material

Kyle Griffin
@kylegriffin1
Flake and Coons squeezed into an oversize phone booth—few still exist on Cap Hill—to call the FBI to see if a probe could be done in a week. Wray wasn't available, so they called Rosenstein. Rosenstein said it could. Soon after, Flake asked for the probe.

Beasts of England

If you haven't watched Flake being accosted in the elevator, it's worth the fun. No one expects the Two Minute Hate.

I am still waiting for "Mattress Girl" to show up, and berate Flake.

Old Lurker

Henry "At NR, McCarthy figured out the Dems lied. Day late, dollar short."

I am about as sick and tired of McCarthy discovering he was lied to as I am waiting for any of the IG reports or unredacted documents.

Captain Hate

Is there any other news going on in the world besides this embarrassing Senate spectacle? Surely the pseudo events that the MFM fixates on aren't the only things, not to mention most important things, going on.

Flake, Murkowski and Collins are the type of cowardly trash that the GOP inflicts on the country because BIG TENT! Are they really the best that we should expect? I don't think so. Maybe the apologists for that poor excuse for a party ought to raise their expectations a bit and maybe stop sending them money. At least Graham seemed to get it. Progress of sorts.

Its a soap opera box with outtakes from scandal and St. Elmos fire, with kavanaugh as emilio estevez mark judge as rob Lowe, other analogues to be named later.

I blacked out once from drinking Long Island Ice Teas at a bar near college. Woke up in my car in the parking lot the next morning. The next week I showed up at this same bar and people I didn't even know came up to me to say what a life of the party I was that night. I had absolutely no recollection of them or anything they were talking about.

Never drank a Long Island Iced Tea again and never will.

Never got that drunk ever again.

Watching the shrill women screaming at Lindsey Graham, screaming at Flake, and screaming during the regular hearing, I have a question.

I'm mad as hell, but there is one thing I'm maddest about. Ford was not told by her lawyers of the offer to come to CA and interview her. Her lawyers have no right to not relay that offer, it's unethical as hell, and they did it to represent the democrats not Ford. She was used.

It's disgusting.

Old Lurker

JMH, fair question.

Are you anywhere close to my age (70)?

But probably it is just predisposition. I have been involved in commercial real estate "deals" all my life, and success there demands an odd mix of unbridled optimism and unbridled "trust but verify" skepticism. Sometimes that exists in the same person, sometimes it requires a partnership. My business partner of 40 years personifies the first, and I have slipped into the role of the latter, especially since "running out of cash or credit" is the fastest road to ruin in the business.

So now it is just a habit I suppose. For the most part it is highly compartmentalized and does not impact my real life but of late I know that I have allowed my political & historical perspectives to merge with my business tendancy, and when I let my bean counting skills color my political outlooks...well then I find myself on the Ledge. (like when I observe that about the same number of Americans voted for Trump as speak languages other than English at home; or that a huge proportion of the cash to run the government is paid by a tiny slice so the others can ride for free; or that evidently no political leaders grasp the importance of balancing budgets or limiting debt; or than votes can be bought outright by promising future benefits when mathematically can never be delivered, ever...all bean counting stuff.)

Thanks for asking, seriously. You are always welcome to visit the Ledge. We have guests from the Veranda all the time.

April 7, 2007, then NC AG and now NC Gov. Roy Cooper ended the Duke Lacrosse players' year-long nightmare by declaring them "innocent". Like Kavanaugh, these were largely prep school kids from affluent families whose parties featured a lot of drinking. If Dr. Ford's claim is true, she would have written/spoken of her own nightmare experience in 1982 during the Duke Hoax year. If not, why not?

Maher: Kavanaugh Was Acting During Committee Hearing – I Don’t Believe His Daughter Said to Pray for Ford

Maher said, “So, this performance he put on yesterday, I always say, you know, acting is not that hard. I’ve always said that about Hollywood. You can say that, and then reality television came along and showed it’s true. It’s not that — anyone can do it.”

He added, “I’m just saying, I believe that was acting, and I also don’t even believe that his 10-year-old daughter said let’s pray for that woman.”

He thinks that Kavanaugh would have his daughter grow up knowing for a fact that her father lied under oath, while using her as a prop.

Jane

"Well, she says she wasn't told, Jane. Did her lawyers confirm that? Also why didn't she read Grassley's letter which clearly stated the offer?"

Grassley's letter went to her lawyers, not her. The entire goal of her legal team is: delay delay delay. She didn't want to go thru that and they forced her.

But she got a million bucks for her efforts. I wonder how much Flake got.

Dorris Goodwin

lt looked to the future with what he called a “Square Deal”—for the rich and the poor, the capitalist and the wageworker. Candidate Trump promised to utilize his skill, which he laid out in The Art of the Deal, to bring America back to a simpler time of greatness. But, in the end, the success of any deal depends on the character and the experience of the dealer. No one would argue that either Roosevelt or Trump suffered from a deficiency of bravado or confidence. Yet Roosevelt grew in power precisely because he grew to know his limitations, because he developed the humility to acknowledge his mistakes. After his first, wildly successful term in the state legislature, he developed, in his own words, a “swelled” head. Whenever opposed, he would yell, pound his desk, and retaliate with venom. While his blistering language made great newspaper copy, he soon found himself bereft of support. It began to dawn upon him, he conceded, that he was “not all-important” and that “cooperation from other people” was essential.

That President Trump has not developed such humility is evident. When asked during his campaign whom he consulted on foreign policy, he said, “My primary consultant is myself, and I have a good instinct for this stuff.” Accepting the Republican nomination, he noted, “Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it.” In the long run, however, the presidency has a way of humbling even the most self-assured.

While both Roosevelt and Trump were born to extraordinary privilege, Roosevelt’s empathy slowly expanded through his long political career. As a state legislator, he investigated the dreadful conditions in New York City’s tenements. As police commissioner, he roamed the slums between midnight and sunrise. His understanding of his fellow citizens broadened during his time in the armed forces, as New York governor, and as vice president. In sum, he was amply prepared as a leader in 1901 when the assassination of William McKinley catapulted him to the presidency at age 42, the youngest man ever to occupy the White House.

During the unprecedented Republican-primary season of 2016, long and broad public service was perceived as a liability. The times were ripe for a candidate with no political background to catch the lightning. Things were so topsy-turvy and toxic, it seemed as if we had left a world where experience, temperament, and character mattered, and entered one where knowledge of history and government and law had all been jettisoned. Candidate Trump brilliantly capitalized on these atmospherics by railing against the political status quo and giving a voice to those who felt excluded.

Campaigning and stoking one’s base, however, is not governing. Governing requires bringing sides together, rather than simply tallying wins and losses. This understanding of leadership has eluded Trump so far. “You hear lots of people say that a great deal is when both sides win,” Trump maintains. “That is a bunch of crap…. I always win.”.

Dorris Goodwin

"He thinks that Kavanaugh would have his daughter grow up knowing for a fact that her father lied under oath, while using her as a prop."

He had no qualms about exposing his 'loved ones ' to public ridicule.

derwill

If it was Rosenstein who promised a week, then it’s only going to take a week. It is truly not in his best interests at this point in time to screw with this. The FBI will find nothing because there is nothing for them to find. McConnell has already started the 30 hour debate clock. The vote will be taken. I would not be surprised if even Flake votes yes, because he’s going to run for president as the reincarnation of Rodney King—why can’t we all just get along? He wants to look like the peacemaker, by trying to please both sides. Give Dems the FBI investigation, then give Republicans a yes vote.

In hindsight I think that while this has been truly a nightmare for Kavanaugh and his family, it will be better for the country in the long run. If we want to have a chance at avoiding a civil war or descending into a totalitarian state, we need defining moments like this. Events that force people to choose what side they are on. A whole lot of normal, good people who have been voting Democrat out of habit or ignorance are being forced to choose: do I believe in innocence until proven guilty? Am I okay with destroying a man’s life and his family based solely on the word of a woman whose story can’t be corroborated in any way? Do I want to vote for people who would do this? Do I want to give these people the power to do this to me?

boris

She was reluctant to go thru that but they convinced her she was the only hope to kill the monsters T & K.

jimmyk

I wonder how much Flake got.

Flake gets to preserve his employment options at MSNBCa and CNN as a representative "Republican" point of view.

This is one of many big problems with the one-week delay. The four pussies of the Senate are getting deluged with enticements and threats of one thing or another by the left. The right doesn't play that game so well. It only takes two of them to yield, unless Manchin and some other Dem cross over. Wavering Dems are also getting threats, no doubt.

jimmyk

The FBI will find nothing because there is nothing for them to find.

Depending on which side one thinks the burden of proof lies, that's either good or bad for Kavanaugh. The mush-minded wavering Senators aren't clear on that, or maybe think it lies with Kavanaugh.

Porchlight

Grassley's letter was released to the public. I get that her lawyers probably told her to stay away from the news but I would have at least followed the actions and statements of the Judiciary Committee if I were her.
