Inspired by our Supreme Court nominee I've been studying up on blackout drinking. I can't gauge other people's expectations but apparently blacking out is somewhat common but hardly inevitable among social drinkers (40% of college age drinkers reported a blackout in previous year). What does it mean for Kavanaugh and his claim that he has never blacked out? I don't know.
Blackouts Among Social Drinkers
Most of the research conducted on blackouts during the past 50 years has involved surveys, interviews, and direct observation of middle–aged, primarily male alcoholics, many of whom were hospitalized. Researchers have largely ignored the occurrence of blackouts among young social drinkers, so the idea that blackouts are an unlikely consequence of heavy drinking in nonalcoholics has remained deeply entrenched in both the scientific and popular cultures. Yet there is clear evidence that blackouts do occur among social drinkers. Knight and colleagues (1999) observed that 35 percent of trainees in a large pediatric residency program had experienced at least one blackout. Similarly, Goodwin (1995) reported that 33 percent of the first–year medical students he interviewed acknowledged having had at least one blackout. “They were inexperienced,” he wrote. “They drank too much too quickly, their blood levels rose extremely quickly, and they experienced amnesia” (p. 315). In a study of 2,076 Finnish males, Poikolainen (1982) found that 35 percent of all males surveyed had had at least one blackout in the year before the survey.
As might be expected given the excessive drinking habits of many college students (Wechsler et al. 2002), this population commonly experiences blackouts. White and colleagues (2002c) recently surveyed 772 undergraduates regarding their experiences with blackouts. Respondents who answered yes to the question “Have you ever awoken after a night of drinking not able to remember things that you did or places that you went?” were considered to have experienced blackouts. Fifty–one percent of the students who had ever consumed alcohol reported blacking out at some point in their lives, and 40 percent reported experiencing a blackout in the year before the survey. Of those who had consumed alcohol during the 2 weeks before the survey, 9.4 percent reported blacking out during this period. Students in the study reported that they later learned that they had participated in a wide range of events they did not remember, including such significant activities as vandalism, unprotected intercourse, driving an automobile, and spending money.
During the 2 weeks preceding the survey, an equal percentage of males and females experienced blackouts, despite the fact that males drank significantly more often and more heavily than females. This outcome suggests that at any given level of alcohol consumption, females—a group infrequently studied in the literature on blackouts—are at greater risk than males for experiencing blackouts. The greater tendency of females to black out likely arises, in part, from well–known gender differences in physiological factors that affect alcohol distribution and metabolism, such as body weight, proportion of body fat, and levels of key enzymes. There also is some evidence that females are more susceptible than males to milder forms of alcohol–induced memory impairments, even when given comparable doses of alcohol (Mumenthaler et al. 1999).

For two years Democrats have asserted the president should never influence FBI decisions and has no right to give FBI instructions.
Then, in the span of a week, those same Democrats demanded that President Trump MUST IMMEDIATELY start influencing and instructing the FBI.

Let me set the stage for you. It is the recent Anchorage municipal elections. It is cold, it is chilly, it’s Anchorage, and there are municipal propositions: one of them is about local cops being able to issue parking tickets. There’s also Proposition 1 (Prop 1), which attracted $900,000 in spending, dwarfing every other election by a country mile.
What’s Proposition 1?
Prop 1 was put forward by an organization called ‘Alaska Family Action’, and the aim of Prop 1 was to make bathrooms, once again, sex-segregated instead of being based on self-declared gender identity. Anchorage’s bathrooms had been segregated by gender identity since 2015. The left-leaning media reacted in cacophony against this new ‘bathroom bill’, and hundreds of thousands of dollars from reasonable people flowed into Anchorage to defeat a municipal ordinance proposal that would harm trans people. Common sense and reason won, and the liberal project continued, with the rights of transgender people to use the bathroom, re-affirmed.

Posted by: Jane | September 29, 2018 at 09:50 AM
JMH, fair question.
Are you anywhere close to my age (70)?
But probably it is just predisposition. I have been involved in commercial real estate "deals" all my life, and success there demands an odd mix of unbridled optimism and unbridled "trust but verify" skepticism. Sometimes that exists in the same person, sometimes it requires a partnership. My business partner of 40 years personifies the first, and I have slipped into the role of the latter, especially since "running out of cash or credit" is the fastest road to ruin in the business.
So now it is just a habit I suppose. For the most part it is highly compartmentalized and does not impact my real life but of late I know that I have allowed my political & historical perspectives to merge with my business tendancy, and when I let my bean counting skills color my political outlooks...well then I find myself on the Ledge. (like when I observe that about the same number of Americans voted for Trump as speak languages other than English at home; or that a huge proportion of the cash to run the government is paid by a tiny slice so the others can ride for free; or that evidently no political leaders grasp the importance of balancing budgets or limiting debt; or than votes can be bought outright by promising future benefits when mathematically can never be delivered, ever...all bean counting stuff.)
Thanks for asking, seriously. You are always welcome to visit the Ledge. We have guests from the Veranda all the time.

April 7, 2007, then NC AG and now NC Gov. Roy Cooper ended the Duke Lacrosse players' year-long nightmare by declaring them "innocent". Like Kavanaugh, these were largely prep school kids from affluent families whose parties featured a lot of drinking. If Dr. Ford's claim is true, she would have written/spoken of her own nightmare experience in 1982 during the Duke Hoax year. If not, why not?

lt looked to the future with what he called a “Square Deal”—for the rich and the poor, the capitalist and the wageworker. Candidate Trump promised to utilize his skill, which he laid out in The Art of the Deal, to bring America back to a simpler time of greatness. But, in the end, the success of any deal depends on the character and the experience of the dealer. No one would argue that either Roosevelt or Trump suffered from a deficiency of bravado or confidence. Yet Roosevelt grew in power precisely because he grew to know his limitations, because he developed the humility to acknowledge his mistakes. After his first, wildly successful term in the state legislature, he developed, in his own words, a “swelled” head. Whenever opposed, he would yell, pound his desk, and retaliate with venom. While his blistering language made great newspaper copy, he soon found himself bereft of support. It began to dawn upon him, he conceded, that he was “not all-important” and that “cooperation from other people” was essential.
That President Trump has not developed such humility is evident. When asked during his campaign whom he consulted on foreign policy, he said, “My primary consultant is myself, and I have a good instinct for this stuff.” Accepting the Republican nomination, he noted, “Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it.” In the long run, however, the presidency has a way of humbling even the most self-assured.
While both Roosevelt and Trump were born to extraordinary privilege, Roosevelt’s empathy slowly expanded through his long political career. As a state legislator, he investigated the dreadful conditions in New York City’s tenements. As police commissioner, he roamed the slums between midnight and sunrise. His understanding of his fellow citizens broadened during his time in the armed forces, as New York governor, and as vice president. In sum, he was amply prepared as a leader in 1901 when the assassination of William McKinley catapulted him to the presidency at age 42, the youngest man ever to occupy the White House.
During the unprecedented Republican-primary season of 2016, long and broad public service was perceived as a liability. The times were ripe for a candidate with no political background to catch the lightning. Things were so topsy-turvy and toxic, it seemed as if we had left a world where experience, temperament, and character mattered, and entered one where knowledge of history and government and law had all been jettisoned. Candidate Trump brilliantly capitalized on these atmospherics by railing against the political status quo and giving a voice to those who felt excluded.
Campaigning and stoking one’s base, however, is not governing. Governing requires bringing sides together, rather than simply tallying wins and losses. This understanding of leadership has eluded Trump so far. “You hear lots of people say that a great deal is when both sides win,” Trump maintains. “That is a bunch of crap…. I always win.”.

If it was Rosenstein who promised a week, then it’s only going to take a week. It is truly not in his best interests at this point in time to screw with this. The FBI will find nothing because there is nothing for them to find. McConnell has already started the 30 hour debate clock. The vote will be taken. I would not be surprised if even Flake votes yes, because he’s going to run for president as the reincarnation of Rodney King—why can’t we all just get along? He wants to look like the peacemaker, by trying to please both sides. Give Dems the FBI investigation, then give Republicans a yes vote.
In hindsight I think that while this has been truly a nightmare for Kavanaugh and his family, it will be better for the country in the long run. If we want to have a chance at avoiding a civil war or descending into a totalitarian state, we need defining moments like this. Events that force people to choose what side they are on. A whole lot of normal, good people who have been voting Democrat out of habit or ignorance are being forced to choose: do I believe in innocence until proven guilty? Am I okay with destroying a man’s life and his family based solely on the word of a woman whose story can’t be corroborated in any way? Do I want to vote for people who would do this? Do I want to give these people the power to do this to me?

I wonder how much Flake got.
Flake gets to preserve his employment options at MSNBCa and CNN as a representative "Republican" point of view.
This is one of many big problems with the one-week delay. The four pussies of the Senate are getting deluged with enticements and threats of one thing or another by the left. The right doesn't play that game so well. It only takes two of them to yield, unless Manchin and some other Dem cross over. Wavering Dems are also getting threats, no doubt.

The FBI will find nothing because there is nothing for them to find.
Depending on which side one thinks the burden of proof lies, that's either good or bad for Kavanaugh. The mush-minded wavering Senators aren't clear on that, or maybe think it lies with Kavanaugh.

Grassley's letter was released to the public. I get that her lawyers probably told her to stay away from the news but I would have at least followed the actions and statements of the Judiciary Committee if I were her.

Ford is a grown woman and wasn't forced to do anything. Enough of this victim business.

It occurs to me that the FBI has every reason NOT to find anything new in the K situation. Do they really want to reveal that they were incompetent 6X BEFORE?

By the FBI/Comey standard of "intent by Democrats," Ford didn't lie lie about her credential as a psychologist. Plus she used the term "hippocampus" in her testimony, so she must be really smart.

Has anyone here called Ford a "victim"?

I accidentally hushed myself once TK. It was glorious!

The other crazy socialist up in your neck of the woods pulled a Michelle fields against Netanyahu spokesman.

I believe the prayer story. My kids & I did that often at bedtime prayers.
It is foundational Christianity.
"... and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;"
One specific time that comes to mind is when someone stole something from my daughter. We prayed for whoever had done it & that Jesus would use that sin to bring them to Him.
That the misdeed would lead to salvation.

The US Ryder Cup team needs to start employing analytics just like pro-football and baseball. If they did, they would find out that Tiger should never have been a Captain's pick. Goes for Phil also. Tiger is 0-5-1 in Foursomes, yet Furyk continues to play him in the afternoon foursomes. Just strange as hell to me.

The Swetnick chick has said she will be interviewed by the FBI. My prediction, she will couch everything "with that was my perception, that's what I think I saw," etc. I can't believe, after what happens when you lie to the FBI, (Martha Stewart) she will actually say he raped anyone or that she saw him spike punch. It's all a snare and a delusion.

"Chairman Grassley, Ranking Member Feinstein, Members of the Committee. My name is Christine Blasey Ford. I am a Professor of Psychology at Palo Alto University and a Research Psychologist at the Stanford University School of Medicine."
Where's her Stanford School of Medicine profile?

Derwill, it is also a good good thing, should he be confirmed, to have a survivor of such self serving, outrageous and unjustified abuse to be on the court. Especially one who obviously can express his toughts logically and forcefully. It sure takes "protecting and defending the Constitution" out of the ivory tower abstract and into real life.

When did Maher become an expert on children and prayer? Fantasies of Kamala Harris getting railed by Willie Brown are more in his wheelhouse.

The deal was a week for the FBI to investigate any claims made up to that point.
I expect McConnell to to stick to that.

Thanks, Ex. Why scrub her title if she's a licensed research psychologist as she claims? Palo Alto U's site labels her as such, but not Stanford Med.

--I always say, you know, acting is not that hard.--
I take it Maher has never actually watched any of the trash he was in, cuz he sure made it look hard.

So the Dems want presidents Trump and then Pence to have two bonus picks to the SCOTUS?
How thoughtful.
Perhaps pres Pence should make it a bakers dozen.
Idiots.

They think they can prevent that circumstance, 50 demerits for Bannon for promoting that weasel on the Maher show.
Posted by: narciso | September 29, 2018 at 11:31 AM
I expect McConnell to to stick to that.
Maybe, but if he doesn't have the votes, and Flake or Murkowski decide on some new demand, what then?
