Inspired by our Supreme Court nominee I've been studying up on blackout drinking. I can't gauge other people's expectations but apparently blacking out is somewhat common but hardly inevitable among social drinkers (40% of college age drinkers reported a blackout in previous year). What does it mean for Kavanaugh and his claim that he has never blacked out? I don't know.
Blackouts Among Social Drinkers
Most of the research conducted on blackouts during the past 50 years has involved surveys, interviews, and direct observation of middle–aged, primarily male alcoholics, many of whom were hospitalized. Researchers have largely ignored the occurrence of blackouts among young social drinkers, so the idea that blackouts are an unlikely consequence of heavy drinking in nonalcoholics has remained deeply entrenched in both the scientific and popular cultures. Yet there is clear evidence that blackouts do occur among social drinkers. Knight and colleagues (1999) observed that 35 percent of trainees in a large pediatric residency program had experienced at least one blackout. Similarly, Goodwin (1995) reported that 33 percent of the first–year medical students he interviewed acknowledged having had at least one blackout. “They were inexperienced,” he wrote. “They drank too much too quickly, their blood levels rose extremely quickly, and they experienced amnesia” (p. 315). In a study of 2,076 Finnish males, Poikolainen (1982) found that 35 percent of all males surveyed had had at least one blackout in the year before the survey.
As might be expected given the excessive drinking habits of many college students (Wechsler et al. 2002), this population commonly experiences blackouts. White and colleagues (2002c) recently surveyed 772 undergraduates regarding their experiences with blackouts. Respondents who answered yes to the question “Have you ever awoken after a night of drinking not able to remember things that you did or places that you went?” were considered to have experienced blackouts. Fifty–one percent of the students who had ever consumed alcohol reported blacking out at some point in their lives, and 40 percent reported experiencing a blackout in the year before the survey. Of those who had consumed alcohol during the 2 weeks before the survey, 9.4 percent reported blacking out during this period. Students in the study reported that they later learned that they had participated in a wide range of events they did not remember, including such significant activities as vandalism, unprotected intercourse, driving an automobile, and spending money.
During the 2 weeks preceding the survey, an equal percentage of males and females experienced blackouts, despite the fact that males drank significantly more often and more heavily than females. This outcome suggests that at any given level of alcohol consumption, females—a group infrequently studied in the literature on blackouts—are at greater risk than males for experiencing blackouts. The greater tendency of females to black out likely arises, in part, from well–known gender differences in physiological factors that affect alcohol distribution and metabolism, such as body weight, proportion of body fat, and levels of key enzymes. There also is some evidence that females are more susceptible than males to milder forms of alcohol–induced memory impairments, even when given comparable doses of alcohol (Mumenthaler et al. 1999).
Wonderful new ad supporting Kavanaugh.

This was a good point -
"The Democrats have also become the new Puritans. Voters should take note, though I doubt Hollywood will.
Thirty years ago, while Judge Kavanaugh was sharing “skis” with his football buddies, Hollywood told us it was the right, the GOP, that were the scolds. Movie after movie, from Footloose to others, had church-going Republicans as the enemy of fun.
Yet Senate Democrats went on the attack, demanding details about beer, parties, farting, beer, sex, drinking games, fun. “Have you ever passed out? Did you ever play quarters? Did you have sex in high school?”"...

If you're not a gun person, be aware of the NRA's wonderful magazine Armed Citizen. It documents cases where ordinary people were able to protect themselves by being armed and willing to fight back.
Sample story from latest issue:
https://www.theblaze.com/news/2018/08/29/good-people-carry-guns-sheriff-backs-uber-driver-who-shot-threatening-stalker
I think a lot of people just aren't aware that in some locations life is not settled. And in some very safe locations there are, nonetheless, brief times where things are not safe. The media is averse to printing anything against the anti gun agenda so seeing a constant flow of these stories is psychologically healthy and helpful.

GOP Officials Slam Flake: 'He's A Pompous A** Who Has Lost His F**king Mind' | Daily Wire
Republican officials sounded off on Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) on Friday afterhe sided with the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee in calling
for an FBI investigation into Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
"He's a pompous a** who has lost his f**king mind," a high-level GOP official told The Daily Wire on the condition of anonymity.
The outrage against Flake came after he changed his mind from voting to confirm Kavanaugh to wanting an FBI investigation completed so that he would "feel better."

While I was over at CTH I noticed he had a clip from Tucker Carlson's show tonight.
Tucker talked about how the dems wewre operating and how Kavenaugh now has a constituency larger than people would believe.
He finished with this:
“Kavanaugh stood up for those people yesterday. He raised a middle finger to their tormentors; and they love him for it. Kavanaugh is far more popular with republican voters today than any single republican senator; and he’s incalculably more popular than the senate as a whole.” … “Kavanaugh now has a constituency, a powerful one; and they will long remember whether republicans defend him in his moment of need”..

Originally reported by the W(hite) P(ower)
Deep within a National Highway Transportation Administration 500 page draft report on proposed new car emission/mileage rules is a line that predicts a 7 degree rise in temperature by 2100. Where did that come from? Maybe from one of the two cooperating agencies, U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
Remember it's a draft report, not the final report.
So the WP and The Hill call it a Trump administration report.
The report was issued in July and the news comes out now because some WP reporter was reading the report.
BS. Someone told them the number was in the report.

A caller in to the Joe Paggs Show today claimed to be a therapist who had many years of experience dealing with characters like Ms Christine Mangum Ford. She made the point that no responsible Polygraph operator would give a Polygraph to a subject on or around the day the subject had attended or was about to attend a loved ones Funeral, because the emotions of burying a loved one would in a way overwhelm and thus invalidate the responses that a legitimate Polygraph operator would be trying to record and analyze.
That made a lot of sense to me.

I was so fn pissed about the Kavanaugh situation this afternoon I suggested to D lets go over to the car dealership and look at what we would need to tow a boat and....
D bought a new F-150 truck and traded his Mustang. STX if anyone knows what that is.
We are planning on buying one maybe two Yamaha Wave Runners next spring, and my Escape won't tow them, so we were just gonna go see what was out there to pull them.
I'd like a Glastron GTDX220, but holy geebus $37K for a deck boat??? and payments of like $700 a month. For a glorified deck boat. NO way.
At least the Waverunners run on regular gas station gas not marine gas and cost about 1/2 as much for a couple of middle of the line ones.
Fun new toys for the lake and we can take them to the Keys next fall. Plus when we move to S Florida, we will have them.
Progs wail and cry to keep themselves miserable and conservatives buy toys to have fun.
Should I send the bill to Flake or start a GoFundMe???

As he considered his course of action, Flake also had a conversation with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is in charge of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.
Coons said Flake asked to speak to Feinstein. Eventually, it became a scrum where "virtually every member of the committee" gathered in the anteroom. Flake later told reporters he met with Democratic colleagues and asked them, "What would cause you to say we have a better process?"

I suppose a Twin Cities TV station would have to grub for viewers by catering to the Left when reporting news. I remember some time in the distant past a "Fair and Balanced" moniker and they used to occasionally quote viewer comments.

anonamom, agreed
MM, I said this some time ago, your daughter needs an immigration attorney. I know you told her and she didn't listen, but now she has to.
I'm happy for her, but her will alone, is not enough to pull this off.

jim nj, I can understand your Killfile strategy as an effective solution to increase the JOM signal to noise ratio.

anonamom,
Do you have any recommended web sites for a low carb diet? I am going to start on one while my daughter is gone.

I've just done almost 48 hours of personal news blackout - I hadn't seen or heard a single story or headline or mention of any news during that time. I've checked a few stock quotes, that's it. Instead of a normal greeting, I've been saying to people "Don't mention any news to me!" So, yes, I've been a nut, but it was a fun exercise and I must have lowered my blood pressure.
And so this morning, I look to see how it all turned out, and it hasn't all turned out. Sigh. But...Lindsey Graham, yes!
I've mentioned before that I don't have or want a killfile program, it's not that hard for me to just scroll through the nonsense. Things are complicated enough already, I wouldn't want a program that would allow me to block posts of a regular like TK. What was it that the great philosopher Rodney King said?

If you google Dr. Terry Wahl you'll find some great Ted talks and can go to her website. Hers is compelling story. She is a U of Iowa internist who practices at the VA and is doing clinical studies showing how beneficial low inflamatory diets are.

jim nj,
Yes, I told her repeatedly. They will just have to figure it out for themselves and she will probably end up hiring one when she gets back.
She knows he will have a wait. I am just without any influence on this. Maybe he can talk some sense into her.

anonamom,
I never married, never had a daughter, but if I had she would have had my full knowledge. About everything. Boys, cars, self-defense, etc. She's be a tomboy and and an Amazonian.
She'd rule the world.

So, that "ABA wants FBI investigation" that was reported yesterday was #FakeNews
The PRESIDENT of the ABA wants it---failed to get the backing of the committee that would have had to OK it to have it sent on behalf of the ABA, sent the letter on to Ds, somehow got misreported...

Just keep praying.

The private information on the Republican Senators is coming from a computer from the House of Representatives!
Now this…
The IP addresses lead back to a Congressional office.
The IP address of the villain who doxxed the Republican Senators is 143.231.249.130.
From there, a google search reveals that this IP address posted a comment on AUGUST 22, 2018. Very recently [redacted]
Kathleen Sengstock, a staffer for Maxine waters, posted from this IP. (https://www.c-span.org/person/?kathleensengstock) (https://twitter.com/kathleensengsto?lang=en)
So, one of Maxine Waters’ staffers has posted from that IP. I’m not sure how subnetting works in the House of Reps. But I would assume that for security purposes each rep would get their own router. Can anyone confirm?

I subscribed to dietdoctor for about 6 months. I collected numerous good recipes. I signed off because I had enough recipes and didn't want to spend $9/month. Otherwise I was very pleased with their website. A couple of clicks to unsubscribe and I had web access through my paid time.
