Gus, AA--Have your son claim he was born a poor black child on Lake Nemahbin who was abandoned and survived by eating fish he caught and venison hs shot.

squaredance

GUS: As you may have guessed, that means that they are highly selective but they do not look a grades, intellectual aptitude or academic accomplishments, or really talent of any sort that might aid a college career, to make that selection, particularly if the applicant is white. In fact, these thing would count against a white applicant.

"Holistic" means that they look at pigmentation, "capacity" for social activism, and useless non academic activities to make that selection, particularly if the applicant in not white.

Oh, and there is something about "Privilege" in there too, but I cannot quite figure out what they are talking about.

GUS

Squaredance, Goodness gracious, I love this conversation. I LOVE Mesa Boogie. Theee best new age amp available during my time as an "ARTIST".
There is no definitive answer to what AMP or modeling amp, or new amp product is best.
I am OLD SCHOOL. The best amp, is the one that sounds the best to YOU, and is the best that represents the MUSIC that you love to play.
MARSHALL 100 WATT TUBE HEADS, with 4x12 cabs, was the STATE of the ART for ROCK n ROLL. It's similar to loving a GUITAR. There are TONS of new age guitars. Hamers were my favorite in MY generation. Similar to PRS's of today. Before that, I was a HUGE fan of SG-s and L-5 Gibbies and LES PAULS.

Indeed, jimmyk, she seems like a sociopath (if that is the correct term).

She lies about her fear of flying, and when called on it, it doesn't even register for her that there is something amiss.

She doesn't remember who "rescued" her by driving her home after she was almost raped (allegedly).

Something is wrong with pseudo-Doctor Ford.

squaredance

GUS: you have an L5? So expensive now.

Anyway, I was really impressed with that Mesa Mark V:25. It is their "cheap" Mark V. It is tiny (the head is 16 pounds) with only 2 channels. What is interesting about it
is that is is sort of a D-style amp by accident. They really started that out as a sort of Princeton circuit clone, and then started adding "voicings" to it--mostly EQ and gain structure features--and it sort of morphed into a D-style amp, though they had absolutely no intention of doing that at all. I mean it is different, it is based on EL 84s, and the controls are different and some of the voicings are way different out of the box, but a smart player could get the same sort of tones out it, or at least a reasonable subset. Ans it is just tiny. Impressive engineering, I thought.

Sunday is the deadline to get the pact done. Trump already gave Congress notice of the US-Mexico deal. The Mexican President leaves office Nov. 30. He can sign off on the US-Mexico deal before that, but if Canada wants in on the deal they have to do it today so Trump can give Congress 60 days notice and still allow the Mexican President to sign on the new deal by Nov. 30.

My understanding is that the Mexican President-elect wants it done this way.

I think the proposed auto tariff on Canadian cars is becoming very hard to ignore.

https://hotair.com/archives/2018/09/29/californias-sanctuary-city-laws-take-hit-court/

Apparently some California municipalities are "charter" cities rather than “General Law Cities.” "Charter" cities claimed that the state was interfering with their charters by passing the state sanctuary legislation.

If the ruling is upheld more than 100 communities can, if they wish, opt out of the state sanctuary law.

Interesting argument. Makes sense though - if California can ignore federal law, it seems fitting that some cities won't have to obey state law.

Long ago, right after 9/11, I remember talking to a friend who is a very religious Christian. When I expressed anxiety about the final outcome of what seemed to me like an epic battle against a vicious and intolerant force, he said that evil never triumphs, not ultimately.

Looking back through history confirms that evil never triumphs but is allowed to flourish for a time in the service of God's plan.

I'm just spit-balling here, but integrity is something that you have or you don't.

There's no in between, regardless of your politics.

That seems to have broken down throughout government, including both houses of congress.

I was in a CVS store a day or so ago. I bought a $6.99 non-taxable item. I was expecting a penny in change - and I got a dime instead. I can't help myself nowadays so I spoke up, gave back the dime and waited for my penny.

I didn't hold those values as a teen-ager, but after getting in trouble because of that, I reformed.

I always feel sorry for middle-aged people who break the law with white collar crimes like embezzlement and such. They should have gotten that out of their system at a younger age when the punishment was less severe and you could learn a life-long lesson.

And I look at both houses of Congress and there are people there who understand such things as morality, the Golden Rule, Karma, whatever you want to call it.

And yet there are others who have no concept of honor, or the above principles, and the only goal is to win whatever the cost.

We haven't elected the brightest and most honorable to office, with some exceptions, but the dumbest and most partisan.

And now the reveal, I've told you before that I was homeless, but I never told you that I was internationally famous.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2495633/Homeless-James-Brady-denied-benefits-finding-returning-850.html

Every network wanted me on TV. I didn't want that. I spoke to only one reporter who relayed dozens of requests to me and I refused them all. I didn't want the attention for doing the right thing.

Forgive me if I feel superior to every Senator and Representative out here.

On Topic!

TM's topic of course being excessive drinking, it struck me that when we consider the idea of men who can hold their liquor and men who can't, we can go pretty much all the way back in Western Civilization to its founding Philosophical figure to find the premier example of the guy who can hold his liquor---Socrates. For example, from Plato's Symposium---After a hard all nighter we get this concluding paragraph

Agathon arose in order that he might take his place on the couch by Socrates, when suddenly a band of revellers entered, and spoiled the order of the banquet. Some one who was going out having left the door open, they had found their way in, and made themselves at home; great confusion ensued, and every one was compelled to drink large quantities of wine. Aristodemus said that Eryximachus, Phaedrus, and others went away—he himself fell asleep, and as the nights were long took a good rest: he was awakened towards daybreak by a crowing of cocks, and when he awoke, the others were either asleep, or had gone away; there remained only Socrates, Aristophanes, and Agathon, who were drinking out of a large goblet which they passed round, and Socrates was discoursing to them. Aristodemus was only half awake, and he did not hear the beginning of the discourse; the chief thing which he remembered was Socrates compelling the other two to acknowledge that the genius of comedy was the same with that of tragedy, and that the true artist in tragedy was an artist in comedy also. To this they were constrained to assent, being drowsy, and not quite following the argument. And first of all Aristophanes dropped off, then, when the day was already dawning, Agathon. Socrates, having laid them to sleep, rose to depart; Aristodemus, as his manner was, following him. At the Lyceum he took a bath, and passed the day as usual. In the evening he retired to rest at his own home.

Socrates's ability to imbibe and not be affected by drink became I think, shortly after Plato penned it way back in about 490 BC, something of an Ideal, another Hellenic Ideal for men over the next 2 Millenia to test themselves against to see how they measured up: "Socrates was a genius and he could drink all night without effect---how did he do that, and can I do that?"

It beats me whether Socrates ever could do that but his friends who penned his remembrances obviously thought he could, and since he is pretty much the Father of Western Civilization's heritage of questioning, he without doubt had an impact on ideas and ideals about drinking over the next 2,000 years. I know for myself personally that having read Plato as a teenager Socrates struck me as a character to be greatly admired and emulated, and when I did start drinking after joining the Navy (since it was required during debriefs at the O'Club after training hops) I wondered if I could pound it down like Socrates yet still walk away unaffected. I imagine millions of men have thought the same since.

I'd say more about this topic but I've had a bit too much to drink tonight to make any more sense of it so I think I'll join Agathon on the couch over yonder, so if you'll excuse me...

Zzzzz.

Clarice, yes, great, depressing Pieces.

A good project for daddy would be to make a list of all the great "purges" through history in which thoughts and words, claimed to be an offense to some "greater good/power/authority/group" which resulted in the slaughter of the greatest number of people, whether by killing them outright or silencing them into subservience? Start small (witches in Salem); go big (Stalin/Mao); in between (Spanish Inquisition, French Revolution)...the list goes on and on.
