The NY Times has coverage of the 'wrong apartment' shooting in Dallas. There detail about neighbors complaining about marijuana smoke is new to me (and to Google News), and provides a rationale for the seemingly gratuitous marijuana 'smear' of a few days back. My emphasis:
In an echo of past police killings, there has been anger over what seem to be attempts to incriminate the victim: Police released a search warrant that revealed that 10.4 grams of marijuana in multiple baggies had been found in Mr. Jean’s apartment.
“First they assassinate his person, then they assassinate his character,” Mr. Crump said.
Hours earlier that evening, managers at the apartment complex had received complaints from residents that there was a strong smell of marijuana in the fourth-floor hallways. Managers knocked on Mr. Jean’s door and at least five other doors inquiring about the smell, the Jean family lawyers said. It was unclear who on the floor was responsible for the odor.
OK, first, the Times cites as its source "Jean family lawyers", who held a press conference which included denunciations of the marijuana search and coverage. Did the Times get this 'neighbors complaining' detail separately, or did the rest of the media overlook its significance?
And what is the significance? Well, if - IF - Jean had been smoking marijuana and had cracked his apartment door in order to get some cross-ventilation, that would explain the neighbors' complaints and might answer the riddle of whether his door could have been ajar at times during the night, as Citizen Guyger claims. Kind of a big deal.
Other details which might lean a bit towards Citizen Guyger:
Mr. Jean’s relatives, lawyers and supporters all say it would have been difficult for the officer to have mistaken Mr. Jean’s door: It had a large, bright-red, semicircular doormat, lying on a bare concrete floor. Officer Guyger had none. Would she not have noticed?
“My main concern is that she is lying,” said Mr. Merritt, one of the Jean family lawyers.
But Officer Guyger’s supporters say she had her hands full at the time she arrived at Mr. Jean’s door: Officials said she had with her a police vest, duty bag and lunchbox — items she might be expected to carry to her own front door, not someone else’s.
Depending on how she is holding those items the floor and doormat might not be immediately visible. Nor, if she is on autopilot after a long day, would she be checking for prompts and clues as to her whereabouts.
I still believe that if evaluated as a police officer, Ms. Guyger's decision to shoot can not be justified; if it was too dark for her to see anything other than a silhouette, as she claims, it was too dark for her to see a weapon that could have elevated this to a deadly force situation. IMHO police training in de-escalation is woefully deficient but she could have simply stepped back out of the apartment, re-assessed, and called for back-up. My goodness, what if she had been at her own apartment door and the superintendent had been responding to a complaint about a leak and then decided to change a burned out lightbulb in her entranceway? She's going to shoot the guy?
Evaluated as a civilian in her own residence, the standards for the use of a weapon in self-defense are more lenient and a case for self-defense to prevent a robbery could be made (Texas Penal Code 9.31, 9.32). IF she had been in her own home, which of course she wasn't. And since the hallway was available, shooting just seems to me to be a second or third choice. She lived alone, so she had no reason to think anyone inside was in danger. Stand in the hallway and think things over. Count to ten.
Well. Hindsight is twenty-twenty.
AS BEST I CAN TELL: The NY Times stands alone on this, as best I see.
I await developments.

Full disclosure: I have in on a number of ocassions while traveling on business, used either a key or card on the wrong room door. It happens a lot to hotel guests, especially if there are two banks of elevators across from each other. You first went to your room on the East elevator and turned west when you got to the hallway. Then sometime later you take the West elevator, and forgetting you end up turning west thinking you were on the East elevator.
That, and whether you've had more than one Martini:)

I guess super cop's correct floor and apartment also have strong smells of marijuana, otherwise maybe, just maybe, she may have had an inclination that she was at the wrong place at tbe wrong time.

Not denying they became formulaic in the end. Somewhat like elizabeth george and patricia cornwell. The early spenser stuff is entertaining, especially when travelling or at the beach.

OGH - Uh-oh, someone is in big trouble now. :)
I would never have thought a Spenser reference would suffice to trigger you.
I always wondered why Parker had his protagonists take that turn of character - was he poking fun at himself/his own creations, or subtly commenting on a cultural change in the depiction of heroes?
Thankfully, his Jesse Stone character bore none of the signs of self-absorption/self-regard that Spenser and Hawk devolved to in the later books.

It's not that the officer and the shooting weren't sobering to me so I ignored the topic of the post, I guess my reaction to this shooting, like when the officer shot and killed the lady from Australia, is -- I will never know or understand how or why either horrible event happened. There seemed to be no explanation why a policeman would shoot and kill a woman who reports a crime and walks up to a police car. And, there doesn't seem to be a logical explanation to why that policewoman walked into someone else's apartment thinking it was hers and kills someone she says she thought was an intruder. Not making light of it at all.

Woodward: No Evidence Of Trump-Russia Collusion, I Searched For Two Years
In an interview with Hugh Hewitt on Friday, Bob Woodward said that in his two years of investigating for his new book, 'Fear,' he found no evidence of collusion or espionage between Trump and Russia. Woodward said he looked for it "hard" and yet turned up nothing.
Hewitt: Did you, Bob Woodward, hear anything in your research in your interviews that sounded like espionage or collusion?"
Woodward: "I did not, and of course, I looked for it, looked for it hard,"
Hewitt: "But you’ve seen no collusion?"
Woodward: "I have not."...
Hewitt: ...Very last question, Bob Woodward, I just want to confirm, at the end of two years of writing this book, this intensive effort, you saw no effort, you, personally, had no evidence of collusion or espionage by the President presented to you?"
Woodward: "That is correct."

CH,
No one has done more to support Trump’s MAGA agenda than Sessions. All anyone has to do to confirm that is look at all the policy initiatives and prosecutions that the Sessions-led DOJ have done in less than two years. The announcement this week that the DOJ is investigating the social media tech giants is IMO a mandatory requirement to weaken the control the Progressives have over indoctrinating the general public with misinformation. When someone claims Sessions isn’t supporting Trump my Bullshit Detector triggers and tells me they are either ignorant or trying to deceive people. YMMV.

Trump and supporters, as a group, in general are not ideological. NeverTrumpers, whatever their motives, cloak there Neverism in ideology, and call it true conservatism.
Dennis Prager mentioned on yesterday's Show that "NeverTrumpers believe themselves to be morally superior people to Trump" and that trumps everything about Trump in their cloisterd, selfish, view.
I missed much of his show except that comment but I believe he must have been riffing a bit off his latest column: Is the President a Bad Role Model for Children?
...So then, if I emphatically support the idea that adult men should seek to be models for younger men, how could I support a president who apparently isn’t?
The answer should be so obvious that I am disappointed all conservatives do not readily understand it. The role of the president of the United States is first and foremost to be a good president. If he (or she) is a personal role model, that is a lovely bonus — but it is only a bonus...
Usually whatever Dennis has been writing/thinking about emerges in his comments on his show.

anonamom,
No. Just that I have many times got off an elevator in a hotel either on the wrong floor or dis-oriented because of the one I took, went the wrong way and when the key or card didn't work realized it was the wrong room. I would be surprised that I am alone as a frequent traveller back in the day. One year I did 185K miles on United alone. They have a special club for you in their hubs for 100K members.
Now, I am lucky if I rack up more than 10K miles per year including our trips to Europe:)
BTW, getting off the wrong floor is due to not checking the keypad close enough. For example, one time in Houston, I got on an up elevator on the lobby floor that had come up from a lower level (maybe a garage). Without looking, I just pressed my floor (5) not realizing someone had pressed 4 by mistake when they wanted 7. It arrives at what I think is 5 but its actually 4. These things happen especially if you are tired, lack concentration or have one too many martinis:)

One Nation Under Xi? This is why Christian Persecution in China is Escalating.
Xi and China are at one of those inflection points all dictatorial governments especially communist ones face; allow the country to continue to gravitate toward freedom in an effort to let off steam but risk it flying out of control ala Gorbachev; or crush dissent and reimpose order even though it will eventually destroy much of what they were achieving. The one thing it will do is preserve and strengthen their power for a while longer; and in the end for a power hungry hack like Xi, that's all that matters.

It's Texas, Jake. A guy used deadly force to kill two illegals carrying his neighbor's TV. The guy in next door Louisiana got off for shooting the Japanese kid who got confused about the Halloween party.
I bet supers in Texas are real scrupulous about giving notice.
In the civil case at least there will be a breakdown of who contributed what to the incident.

Jack, that would be fun! The new baby is a grand-niece. A grandchild is probably not going to happen. We're okay with that,as I mentioned we have plenty of grand-nieces and grand-nephews!

JiB, a FYI re: your planning--Frederick is going to want to spend time with his buds on LI over his Christmas holiday, esp if he's in Europe over Thanksgiving.
Thanks for answering my key question, as it creeped me out supremely to think you were able to access other's rooms.
And heck yes, even with as relatively infrequently I stay in elevator dwellings--I've done that plenty too.

We drove up north yesterday to visit my mother-in-law and she cried when we said good-bye. She is losing her eyesight and is frail. :(
It has been hot here and the leaves are just starting to turn, even up north.

The only comment I have about your question is that no one, even Trump supporters, should ever take any of Trump’s tweets 100% literally. Knowing he routinely engages in deception, all you can assume is that Trump is promoting a narrative about Sessions that he wants people to believe for reasons we can only guess.

It seems my understanding that the officer had not been living in that building very long. I wonder if officers in apartments feel more vulnerable?
I will tell you that "Intruders Will Be Shot. Survivors Will Be Shot Again." Is a Mission Statement many places. And since the average woman gives up so much in a fight to an average man I imagine it might go double for them.
I just watched a shooting where a dude who was on probation and known to the cops who stopped him jumped out and shot the lady officer in the leg. Her partner shot him in the head over his car and came around and put one more shot in him.

At the end of his meeting with the Youth of Sicily today, Pope Francis refused to give the Pontifical Blessing, as not to offend the "many non-Catholic christians, those of other religions, and the agnostics" present.
Matthew 5:14-16:
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Except for the non-catholic christians, the pagans, the agnostics and those of other reiigions. Nice job turning out the lights, Pope. It makes me wonder if the Church of England has offered Pope Che' a side job as Arch-Bishop of Canterbury.

anonamom,
The reason it was so easy for him to accept either Saint Thomas More or Canterbury is that most of his old Mercy friends live outside of Southampton. He is the only teen-ager south of Job's lane. You can find it on the map but there are no local teens for him that live in the Village. After Labor Day, we are a small village with the ocassional day tripper, or city people coming out on good weather weekends.
He is much more comfortable in Florida. Especially after the grueling load of Football and his academic load. I think he has more friends there locally than here. But thanks for your concern. He is playing his first scrimmage today. No streaming though.

Chronologies of Paul's life are approximate and debated by scholars. At some point around the year 59 he visited Syracuse where he preached - probably in the place where the paleo-Christian Church of Saint John was built. Whatever was said was expressed in Greek, the vernacular of Roman Sicily (where Latin was a second language). It is possible that a few Jews came to hear Paul talk, as there was a Jewish community at Syracuse. There was no subsequent "Letter of Paul to the Syracusans." However, there is no doubt that it was Paul who brought Christianity to Sicily, even though his stay in Syracuse lasted only three days before he departed for Reggio Calabria, Pozzuoli (near Naples) and then Rome.
So Apostle Paul brought Christianity to Sicily and Pope Francis removed Christianity from Sicily.

daddy,
Don't get me started on Frank the Marxist. Everyone thinks Peronist means Marxist. No, it is more Fascist, like Mussolini Italy.
He is the product of a coup, led by Daneels of Belgium, and his leftist thinking clergy. At one time, I was defending his use of language because I thought his Argentine Spanish was wrongly translated to the juria Italian. But I am now woke. The guy is a disaster, and if you hear Dolan or read him, he agrees without saying it.
The church here is losing big time. Closing our school has pissed off over 3,000 families. No one is giving to the collection basket or the Bishop's appeal. It is a disaster for the diocese. Wait until they announce who is taking over the school property. All Hell on the East End will break out.

The Most Honest Book About Climate Change Yet
William T. Vollmann’s latest opus is brilliant, but it offers no comfort to its readers.
The progs tell us we shouldn't listen to statisticians or engineers or physicists about the climate. They even try to dismiss William Happer one of the leading infrared dudes around because Trump tapped him for some gig, but we should should listen to some half wit fiction writer with a degree in comparative freakin literature.
It is either the left or the rest of us. That is the contest before us.

Regarding Pope Francis:
Blessing a whole crowd of all faiths never bothered Blessed St. John Paul.
Francis seems to go out of his way to disavow traditions and practices, not to mention theology and tenets of the Faith.
He also has that resting frowny face like John Brennan, which is only a coincidence but leaves me with a bad feeling.

I'll simply say that Pope Frances seems to have as big a case of "relative Mental Confusion" as the average Afghani refugee driving a Citroen in Paris. I recall that Peter denied Jesus 3 times before the cock crowed. Anybody keeping track of Frank's denials?
