Oh, my! Wish today's comedians were as witty as Mr. Maguire. A little intelligence would help them, too.

Jim Eagle

Full disclosure: I have in on a number of ocassions while traveling on business, used either a key or card on the wrong room door. It happens a lot to hotel guests, especially if there are two banks of elevators across from each other. You first went to your room on the East elevator and turned west when you got to the hallway. Then sometime later you take the West elevator, and forgetting you end up turning west thinking you were on the East elevator.

That, and whether you've had more than one Martini:)

Threadkiller

Hours earlier that evening, managers at the apartment complex had received complaints from residents that there was a strong smell of marijuana in the fourth-floor hallways

I guess super cop's correct floor and apartment also have strong smells of marijuana, otherwise maybe, just maybe, she may have had an inclination that she was at the wrong place at tbe wrong time.

Old Lurker

Boris, Other Thread:

"whatever their motives, cloak their Neverism in ideology, and call it true conservatism."

OK, I accept that change, Boris.

"Cloak their Neverism" is a lot different, in a Judas Goat fashion, than "ARE the ideological Right".

On the other side of the coin, while some Trump Supporters might not be, lots of them ARE of the ideological right.

Just as I accept that many who support Dems might not be Stalinist Communists, they enjoy going along for the ride. And that is right where I place Never Trumpers...along for the ride with the Dems.

Threadkiller

Here are my comments on the lock, TM. You had noted that "Per the arrest affidavit, which seems to be her version of events, the door was slightly ajar. When she pushed her key into the lock, the door opened."

The videos I linked support that scenario:

From the other shooting thread:

I hate linking this asshole but he does have a video of what the key looks like and how the lock operates.

https://mobile.twitter.com/shaunking/status/1039609539446943747

This video show a similar lock and its operation. It seems that it can be left in the unlocked position:

https://youtu.be/OV8nwDQR_sk

This is from the manufacturer's site:

1″ deadbolt – lock via manual thumb turn from inside

https://www.gokeyless.com/product/saflok-insync-dclass-rfid-deadbolt-lock/

The video at the King Tweet link only proves that the door will automatically shut. Not that is automatically locks.

The officer could have inserted her key twisted it and got nervous when there was no unlocking motor sound but the door was unlocked.

This video shows three different types of locks that the rfid key will operate when used in an apartment complex:

https://youtu.be/t4YfcXqIP94

If the Dallas complex was set up similarly the officer would be able to go through any auto locking door and not the non-auto locking deadbolt.

I think the deceased left his door closed but unlocked.

I should have noted that the second lock in that video doesn't match the apartment lock that was shown in the King video. The third lock does.

I combined all my comments without their time stamps.

Tom Maguire
"Seriously - you can't imagine I was nicknamed "The Tinman" for my grace and agility? If I had a nickel for every time one of my friends called for Dorothy and her oil can..."

Thanks but I took that out as being too light-hearted. As best I recall, the full passage was:

***

Depending on how she is holding those items the floor and doormat might not be immediately visible. I myself can walk without looking at the floor, although its true that I have an unusual level of athleticism. Seriously - you can't imagine I was nicknamed "The Tinman" for my grace and agility? If I had a nickel for every time one of my friends called for Dorothy and her oil can...

Tom Maguire

OK, interesting about the locks, thanks.

"Cloak their Neverism" is a lot different, in a Judas Goat fashion, than "ARE the ideological Right"

Hey I like a good quibble.

Look, where the sides are Obama Left, NeverTrump, and Trump supporters ... it is NeverTrump laying CLAIM to ideological purity of "The Right".

So yeah, regarding those 3 players in the game, they ARE the ideological right team.

I am just proud the spenser book discussion on the previous thread brought in a rare tm comment.

Not denying they became formulaic in the end. Somewhat like elizabeth george and patricia cornwell. The early spenser stuff is entertaining, especially when travelling or at the beach.

Michael (fpa P4F) ... Stop the Witch Hunt - Stop the Coup !

OGH - Uh-oh, someone is in big trouble now. :)
I would never have thought a Spenser reference would suffice to trigger you.

I always wondered why Parker had his protagonists take that turn of character - was he poking fun at himself/his own creations, or subtly commenting on a cultural change in the depiction of heroes?

Thankfully, his Jesse Stone character bore none of the signs of self-absorption/self-regard that Spenser and Hawk devolved to in the later books.

On the troll beat, meanwhile - if you have unsheathed the mighty ban hammer and used it to smite the toxic pollution that is ruining this wonderful experiment of yours, you have my undying thanks.

Mr. Maguire, 12:32:

It's not that the officer and the shooting weren't sobering to me so I ignored the topic of the post, I guess my reaction to this shooting, like when the officer shot and killed the lady from Australia, is -- I will never know or understand how or why either horrible event happened. There seemed to be no explanation why a policeman would shoot and kill a woman who reports a crime and walks up to a police car. And, there doesn't seem to be a logical explanation to why that policewoman walked into someone else's apartment thinking it was hers and kills someone she says she thought was an intruder. Not making light of it at all.

From TK’s Freeper thread...

The net effect of "The plan" is a calming effect on MAGA people who SHOULD BE mad as hell about the lack of support the President is getting from his AG.

Woodward: No Evidence Of Trump-Russia Collusion, I Searched For Two Years

In an interview with Hugh Hewitt on Friday, Bob Woodward said that in his two years of investigating for his new book, 'Fear,' he found no evidence of collusion or espionage between Trump and Russia. Woodward said he looked for it "hard" and yet turned up nothing.

Hewitt: Did you, Bob Woodward, hear anything in your research in your interviews that sounded like espionage or collusion?"

Woodward: "I did not, and of course, I looked for it, looked for it hard,"

Hewitt: "But you’ve seen no collusion?"

Woodward: "I have not."...

Hewitt: ...Very last question, Bob Woodward, I just want to confirm, at the end of two years of writing this book, this intensive effort, you saw no effort, you, personally, had no evidence of collusion or espionage by the President presented to you?"

Woodward: "That is correct."

CH,

No one has done more to support Trump’s MAGA agenda than Sessions. All anyone has to do to confirm that is look at all the policy initiatives and prosecutions that the Sessions-led DOJ have done in less than two years. The announcement this week that the DOJ is investigating the social media tech giants is IMO a mandatory requirement to weaken the control the Progressives have over indoctrinating the general public with misinformation. When someone claims Sessions isn’t supporting Trump my Bullshit Detector triggers and tells me they are either ignorant or trying to deceive people. YMMV.

So now the media have their claws out for Mattis. It really disgusts me. They want so badly for the country to fail so that they can say "I told you so".

Captain Hate

Tom, that answers what you think about Sessions but it didn't answer my question. I'm not trying to be a prick by pointing that out. Sessions was given a huge job, probably the largest of any Cabinet member. I'm sure DJT can be a very demanding executive. I think it's possible that DJT could be pleased with the overall job the AG is doing but still find some specific areas to criticize.

daddy

Trump and supporters, as a group, in general are not ideological. NeverTrumpers, whatever their motives, cloak there Neverism in ideology, and call it true conservatism.

Dennis Prager mentioned on yesterday's Show that "NeverTrumpers believe themselves to be morally superior people to Trump" and that trumps everything about Trump in their cloisterd, selfish, view.

I missed much of his show except that comment but I believe he must have been riffing a bit off his latest column: Is the President a Bad Role Model for Children?

...So then, if I emphatically support the idea that adult men should seek to be models for younger men, how could I support a president who apparently isn’t?

The answer should be so obvious that I am disappointed all conservatives do not readily understand it. The role of the president of the United States is first and foremost to be a good president. If he (or she) is a personal role model, that is a lovely bonus — but it is only a bonus...

Usually whatever Dennis has been writing/thinking about emerges in his comments on his show.

anonamom,

No. Just that I have many times got off an elevator in a hotel either on the wrong floor or dis-oriented because of the one I took, went the wrong way and when the key or card didn't work realized it was the wrong room. I would be surprised that I am alone as a frequent traveller back in the day. One year I did 185K miles on United alone. They have a special club for you in their hubs for 100K members.

Now, I am lucky if I rack up more than 10K miles per year including our trips to Europe:)

BTW, getting off the wrong floor is due to not checking the keypad close enough. For example, one time in Houston, I got on an up elevator on the lobby floor that had come up from a lower level (maybe a garage). Without looking, I just pressed my floor (5) not realizing someone had pressed 4 by mistake when they wanted 7. It arrives at what I think is 5 but its actually 4. These things happen especially if you are tired, lack concentration or have one too many martinis:)

One Nation Under Xi? This is why Christian Persecution in China is Escalating.
Xi and China are at one of those inflection points all dictatorial governments especially communist ones face; allow the country to continue to gravitate toward freedom in an effort to let off steam but risk it flying out of control ala Gorbachev; or crush dissent and reimpose order even though it will eventually destroy much of what they were achieving. The one thing it will do is preserve and strengthen their power for a while longer; and in the end for a power hungry hack like Xi, that's all that matters.

After Labor Day, we are a small village with the ocassional day tripper, or city people coming out on good weather weekends.

He is much more comfortable in Florida. Especially after the grueling load of Football and his academic load. I think he has more friends there locally than here. But thanks for your concern. He is playing his first scrimmage today. No streaming though.

Chronologies of Paul's life are approximate and debated by scholars. At some point around the year 59 he visited Syracuse where he preached - probably in the place where the paleo-Christian Church of Saint John was built. Whatever was said was expressed in Greek, the vernacular of Roman Sicily (where Latin was a second language). It is possible that a few Jews came to hear Paul talk, as there was a Jewish community at Syracuse. There was no subsequent "Letter of Paul to the Syracusans." However, there is no doubt that it was Paul who brought Christianity to Sicily, even though his stay in Syracuse lasted only three days before he departed for Reggio Calabria, Pozzuoli (near Naples) and then Rome.

So Apostle Paul brought Christianity to Sicily and Pope Francis removed Christianity from Sicily.
