The NY Times has coverage of the 'wrong apartment' shooting in Dallas. There detail about neighbors complaining about marijuana smoke is new to me (and to Google News), and provides a rationale for the seemingly gratuitous marijuana 'smear' of a few days back. My emphasis:
In an echo of past police killings, there has been anger over what seem to be attempts to incriminate the victim: Police released a search warrant that revealed that 10.4 grams of marijuana in multiple baggies had been found in Mr. Jean’s apartment.
“First they assassinate his person, then they assassinate his character,” Mr. Crump said.
Hours earlier that evening, managers at the apartment complex had received complaints from residents that there was a strong smell of marijuana in the fourth-floor hallways. Managers knocked on Mr. Jean’s door and at least five other doors inquiring about the smell, the Jean family lawyers said. It was unclear who on the floor was responsible for the odor.
OK, first, the Times cites as its source "Jean family lawyers", who held a press conference which included denunciations of the marijuana search and coverage. Did the Times get this 'neighbors complaining' detail separately, or did the rest of the media overlook its significance?
And what is the significance? Well, if - IF - Jean had been smoking marijuana and had cracked his apartment door in order to get some cross-ventilation, that would explain the neighbors' complaints and might answer the riddle of whether his door could have been ajar at times during the night, as Citizen Guyger claims. Kind of a big deal.
Other details which might lean a bit towards Citizen Guyger:
Mr. Jean’s relatives, lawyers and supporters all say it would have been difficult for the officer to have mistaken Mr. Jean’s door: It had a large, bright-red, semicircular doormat, lying on a bare concrete floor. Officer Guyger had none. Would she not have noticed?
“My main concern is that she is lying,” said Mr. Merritt, one of the Jean family lawyers.
But Officer Guyger’s supporters say she had her hands full at the time she arrived at Mr. Jean’s door: Officials said she had with her a police vest, duty bag and lunchbox — items she might be expected to carry to her own front door, not someone else’s.
Depending on how she is holding those items the floor and doormat might not be immediately visible. Nor, if she is on autopilot after a long day, would she be checking for prompts and clues as to her whereabouts.
I still believe that if evaluated as a police officer, Ms. Guyger's decision to shoot can not be justified; if it was too dark for her to see anything other than a silhouette, as she claims, it was too dark for her to see a weapon that could have elevated this to a deadly force situation. IMHO police training in de-escalation is woefully deficient but she could have simply stepped back out of the apartment, re-assessed, and called for back-up. My goodness, what if she had been at her own apartment door and the superintendent had been responding to a complaint about a leak and then decided to change a burned out lightbulb in her entranceway? She's going to shoot the guy?
Evaluated as a civilian in her own residence, the standards for the use of a weapon in self-defense are more lenient and a case for self-defense to prevent a robbery could be made (Texas Penal Code 9.31, 9.32). IF she had been in her own home, which of course she wasn't. And since the hallway was available, shooting just seems to me to be a second or third choice. She lived alone, so she had no reason to think anyone inside was in danger. Stand in the hallway and think things over. Count to ten.
Well. Hindsight is twenty-twenty.
AS BEST I CAN TELL: The NY Times stands alone on this, as best I see.
I await developments.
No it's fine, jim_nj. But when you look at a swamp you see constant streams of carbon dioxide, methane and hydrogen sulfide bubbling up. It's nice to see some actual contemporary lawbreakers going down. Or up.

I'm seeing several stories along this line.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-final-offensive-in-syria-by-putin-and-assad-suddenly-looks-like-its-on-hold
Something is happening behind the scenes. I don't know what, but the attack on Idlib appears to be in a pause.
I assume a lot of voices are coming at Russia, Syria and Iran on this. Lot's of chances for a misstep that could bring in other parties bent on blunting the attack.
I think there is a multi-national response planned if any gas attacks occur. I'm wondering where Syrian air forces are based. Are any on Russian bases?
Reports seem to indicate that the Syrian ground forces don't have the right troops in place or that there are an insufficient number of them to launch a ground attack.
Were the Russians bluffing? They, reportedly, haven't been bombing anything lately.
Meanwhile, in eastern Syria, we seem to be on the attack against ISIS again. If our SDF and Kurd allies can break them we'll own even more of Syria. If those forces should decide to attack the Iranians, who are we to stop them?
Giggle. We'll be providing them with air and artillery support covertly.
And if I can evoke Wictor, tongue in cheek, the GCC special forces will be the deciding force.

PIN,
Yes, some of the fraud is due to corrupt government employees. Most, I think, is due to lazy government employees who don't do their jobs.
Kennedy issued an executive order allowing federal employees to unionize. If that's correct, then a another executive order should be able to abolish that.
I look forward to that.

jim nj, thanks for all the links. I'm just getting caught up with the thread. Financial things don't get far with my attention but after a few of your links and your explanations I can see that I'm making progress understanding some tiny bit of what happened. I remember in early 2007 having a bad feeling about things and moving my 401k to safer investments. That was fine but my mistake was to leave them there as the market recovered. It wasn't until 2011 or so that I connected with a financial adviser who coaxed me out of my cash in the mattress strategy.

Hoyden,
That's funny. I know from my research and many studies that you can't time the equity market. It belches up and down so quickly that no one is smart enough to time it.
Pulling out of the market is rational when you lose confidence. Not plowing back in is also rational when you're still uncertain.
I managed the market timing perfectly in 2000, without intending to. Solomon Smith Barney acquired Schroeder, my employer, and even though I didn't join the new firm, they liquidated my 401(k) into cash as part of the merger. I was all money markets when the dot com bubble burst later that year. Most people lost 30-40% of their 401(k)s. Me? Not at all. I was in cash. Best market bet I never made.

Local police arrived and found the man writhing in pain gesturing to his crotch. A local resident explained to the police how the African became wounded shortly before they arrived.
The witness said that the man kicked the dog of a local resident and the dog then retaliated. The dog clamped his teeth on the attacker’s penis and then his hand as the man tried to push the animal away.

Maybe PDJT is to blame, guys:
The Relative Cost of Evacuation
What is happening is that people are looking at the costs of evacuation and the costs of sheltering in-place to make the decision. Certainly, while five days is sufficient time to board up the house and drive inland to a motel somewhere, the costs of the trip, food and lodging can be pricey. The problem with this, however, is the costs are warped by the price gouging laws and expectation of speedy, and no-cost to the individual, rescue by government agencies. If fuel is legislatively held at, for the purposes of this example, $3 per gallon, that generator that burns 18 gallons a day would cost $756 to run if the power was out for 14 days. They could also buy up water at $4 for 45-17oz bottles. This certainly seems less expensive than driving inland and renting out a room at $180/night for 14 nights; unless one is able to get one of the rooms major hotel chains like to offer at a discount to evacuees to enhance the hotel firm's image. (It's also true that private charities frequently cover the expenses of those who are less able to afford it.) Consideration of the probable costs of relocation likely led to many people making active plans to stay in place by stocking up on fuel and water. It is these individuals that elect to not leave in the face of a dangerous storm that can result in fatalities that have reached upward of 1,833 in the more modern era. And this often also leads to massive rescue efforts — on the taxpayer dime — for those who survive.

On the thread topic:
Is there some reason other than morbid curiosity why anyone besides the immediate players involved should be concerned about this story?
Because it speaks to the relationship between citizens and law enforcement/government, and to the deference the legal system gives to law enforcement/government employees which is not granted to ordinary citizens in similar circumstances.

Debt overhangs kill economies. That almost happened to us in 2008. China looks worse, by my estimates. Too much debt at national, provincial and corporate levels. A grey-market lending system as large as our "repo" market, their P2P lending market (P2P meaning peer to peer lending) which is collapsing. Liquidity and wealth disappearing.
Which means the supply of money is decreasing. So the central bank needs to be accommodating with an expansionary monetary policy. But they have been trying to tamp down credit in previous years. Trying to tamp down credit and opening the monetary spigots at the the same time is not a policy, but a panicked reaction.
China is staring the black swan in the face and wondering who is going to win.
Trump, whether he knew it or not, picked the right time to go after China's trade policy.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but I assume the OIGs of every Federal Department find wrong doing on a regular basis.
It would be nice if the MSM reported on these things, but that's not their job anymore.
No, they're blatant propagandists who don't even try to hide it. But people know that things are getting better in the country in every aspect and that reflects well on every Cabinet member (maybe not DeVos, who rse has given us insight into her agenda, but even she has had some small victories). The one that really interests me is Ben Carson, who I'd imagine has quietly transformed a graft ridden shithole of a department into something which isn't flagrantly violating its raison d'etre to the enrichment of a select few.
Remember, some of the visible GOP financiers are apoplectic over this if you ever want to know why the party has been such a massive failure since Reagan.

He derided my suggestions because his father - the Boston firefighter - had a pension and had never saved a dime of his own money. And I pointed out that Capitalism™ was also responsible for allowing the monthly checks to flow to his retired at 60 father due to a thing called the" financial markets" which is where the assets for that pension are invested. For someone so bright (he is bright and articulate) he is awfully uninformed. Anyway - she took my advice and already has a tidy sum saved. Heh.

Catching up, on the discussion last night: I’ve gone to the wrong hotel room, the wrong airplane seat, but never mistaken someone else’s apartment for my own, though I suppose it’s possible.
As for locks, once I had parked on the street somewhere in Boston, and at night went to the wrong car (same make and model), stuck the key in and the door opened! When the overhead light went on I saw it wasn’t my car, which was 20 feet away. Not sure what the odds of that were, but no gunfire ensued.

John Ratcliffe on Maria bolstering everything Nunes said. More tweets revealed and worry that the investigation will be shut down if we lost the midterms. Both he and Nunes are well worth watching. Maria doing a great job.
Marlene, I have not been to the beach because supposedly it is awful.

Was that a while back, before they had chips in car locks? In the mid to late 60s when my buds and I used to work on cars a lot, there weren't that many variances in auto keys. In fact one of my friends had a keychain full of keys that could open just about all Chevies. He never used it for anything except to help people that had locked themselves out of their car but it was relatively easy to boost a car then.

Yes, CH it was in the mid-80s. Car was a ‘74 Volvo.

Morning shows all ignore clear statement from Manafort team that there is no cooperation against the President and a statement “there was no collusion.” It is pathetic: how biased they are! What’s new?

Inslee took an oath to execute his lawful duties. I guess his word means nothing compared to muh principles. The state legislature should be all over him for this petty small minded stunt.
Posted by: Captain Hate | September 16, 2018 at 11:21 AM
They should just reconfigure the certificates and get President Trump to sign them instead. Who would want that guy's signature anyway?

So, hurricane update---power out at 2:30, two minutes after I got up to turn off the hall lamp which was disturbing my sLeep on the living room sofa.
Winds had gotten here w "yellow rain" around 9:30.
Called Duke--had already been called in!
1200 others affected in my outage.
Fortunately, most of my neighborhood has underground connections that come from further out of town, and they are fine, so I am in a friend's home, and they are gone for two weeks. Only down side is hte massive oak in their back yard.
Oh well--if we die, we'll be "doing what we love to do"--watching football and surfing hte internet.

Don't you just hate it when your generator kicks on in the middle of the night? Then the AC has to recycle too. And the dogs bark at the new sounds.

On the financial crisis discussion: Agree that Fannie and Freddie were at the heart of it in the US, but others here and abroad got caught up in it. Anyone believing they’ll be bailed out will take excessive risks. Either credibly promise never to bail out anyone, or limit leverage. Feds did neither.

Great job, Clarice. The book on Feinstein is slowly closing, but the alternative may be a true crazy, De Leon. He and Harris are both out of their minds.
Not sure if the Moonbeam even has authority to launch his own satellite. But he sure lives up to the nickname.
I can't wait not to buy Paul "Wanker" McCartney's latest. Trite, pithy music. he had a music hall touch, but even that is gone now.
Perhaps one of the reasons they are so upset is that the butthurt is so painful that their kumbaya globalist bullshit is being seen for what it is. They got called on it and they really don't like that. Bono had a great buddy in Barack and now Trump won't take his calls.
They have become parodies of themselves. Someone really needs to do a cartoon series. They could start with a Santa Monica or Berkeley city hall meeting and go from there.
Politics is sausage making, and what they have done is to marginalize themselves so thoroughly that I really do think that if there is some common sense left in the American people, they will be sadly surprised in November.

Isn’t Manafort cooperating when he says no collusion. He should get as much credit, maybe more, by sticking to the truth. After all Mueller is seeking justice not political revenge, isn’t he.?
