No it's fine, jim_nj. But when you look at a swamp you see constant streams of carbon dioxide, methane and hydrogen sulfide bubbling up. It's nice to see some actual contemporary lawbreakers going down. Or up.

I'm seeing several stories along this line.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-final-offensive-in-syria-by-putin-and-assad-suddenly-looks-like-its-on-hold

Something is happening behind the scenes. I don't know what, but the attack on Idlib appears to be in a pause.

I assume a lot of voices are coming at Russia, Syria and Iran on this. Lot's of chances for a misstep that could bring in other parties bent on blunting the attack.

I think there is a multi-national response planned if any gas attacks occur. I'm wondering where Syrian air forces are based. Are any on Russian bases?

Reports seem to indicate that the Syrian ground forces don't have the right troops in place or that there are an insufficient number of them to launch a ground attack.

Were the Russians bluffing? They, reportedly, haven't been bombing anything lately.

Meanwhile, in eastern Syria, we seem to be on the attack against ISIS again. If our SDF and Kurd allies can break them we'll own even more of Syria. If those forces should decide to attack the Iranians, who are we to stop them?

Giggle. We'll be providing them with air and artillery support covertly.

And if I can evoke Wictor, tongue in cheek, the GCC special forces will be the deciding force.

PIN,
Yes, some of the fraud is due to corrupt government employees. Most, I think, is due to lazy government employees who don't do their jobs.

Kennedy issued an executive order allowing federal employees to unionize. If that's correct, then a another executive order should be able to abolish that.

I look forward to that.

jim nj, thanks for all the links. I'm just getting caught up with the thread. Financial things don't get far with my attention but after a few of your links and your explanations I can see that I'm making progress understanding some tiny bit of what happened. I remember in early 2007 having a bad feeling about things and moving my 401k to safer investments. That was fine but my mistake was to leave them there as the market recovered. It wasn't until 2011 or so that I connected with a financial adviser who coaxed me out of my cash in the mattress strategy.

Hoyden,

That's funny. I know from my research and many studies that you can't time the equity market. It belches up and down so quickly that no one is smart enough to time it.

Pulling out of the market is rational when you lose confidence. Not plowing back in is also rational when you're still uncertain.

I managed the market timing perfectly in 2000, without intending to. Solomon Smith Barney acquired Schroeder, my employer, and even though I didn't join the new firm, they liquidated my 401(k) into cash as part of the merger. I was all money markets when the dot com bubble burst later that year. Most people lost 30-40% of their 401(k)s. Me? Not at all. I was in cash. Best market bet I never made.

Local police arrived and found the man writhing in pain gesturing to his crotch. A local resident explained to the police how the African became wounded shortly before they arrived.

The witness said that the man kicked the dog of a local resident and the dog then retaliated. The dog clamped his teeth on the attacker’s penis and then his hand as the man tried to push the animal away.

Maybe PDJT is to blame, guys:

The Relative Cost of Evacuation
What is happening is that people are looking at the costs of evacuation and the costs of sheltering in-place to make the decision. Certainly, while five days is sufficient time to board up the house and drive inland to a motel somewhere, the costs of the trip, food and lodging can be pricey. The problem with this, however, is the costs are warped by the price gouging laws and expectation of speedy, and no-cost to the individual, rescue by government agencies. If fuel is legislatively held at, for the purposes of this example, $3 per gallon, that generator that burns 18 gallons a day would cost $756 to run if the power was out for 14 days. They could also buy up water at $4 for 45-17oz bottles. This certainly seems less expensive than driving inland and renting out a room at $180/night for 14 nights; unless one is able to get one of the rooms major hotel chains like to offer at a discount to evacuees to enhance the hotel firm's image. (It's also true that private charities frequently cover the expenses of those who are less able to afford it.) Consideration of the probable costs of relocation likely led to many people making active plans to stay in place by stocking up on fuel and water. It is these individuals that elect to not leave in the face of a dangerous storm that can result in fatalities that have reached upward of 1,833 in the more modern era. And this often also leads to massive rescue efforts — on the taxpayer dime — for those who survive.

On the thread topic:

Is there some reason other than morbid curiosity why anyone besides the immediate players involved should be concerned about this story?

Because it speaks to the relationship between citizens and law enforcement/government, and to the deference the legal system gives to law enforcement/government employees which is not granted to ordinary citizens in similar circumstances.

jim nj

Debt overhangs kill economies. That almost happened to us in 2008. China looks worse, by my estimates. Too much debt at national, provincial and corporate levels. A grey-market lending system as large as our "repo" market, their P2P lending market (P2P meaning peer to peer lending) which is collapsing. Liquidity and wealth disappearing.

Which means the supply of money is decreasing. So the central bank needs to be accommodating with an expansionary monetary policy. But they have been trying to tamp down credit in previous years. Trying to tamp down credit and opening the monetary spigots at the the same time is not a policy, but a panicked reaction.

China is staring the black swan in the face and wondering who is going to win.

Trump, whether he knew it or not, picked the right time to go after China's trade policy.

I loved he link above comparing President Trumps’s approach to Patton.

No, they're blatant propagandists who don't even try to hide it. But people know that things are getting better in the country in every aspect and that reflects well on every Cabinet member (maybe not DeVos, who rse has given us insight into her agenda, but even she has had some small victories). The one that really interests me is Ben Carson, who I'd imagine has quietly transformed a graft ridden shithole of a department into something which isn't flagrantly violating its raison d'etre to the enrichment of a select few.

Remember, some of the visible GOP financiers are apoplectic over this if you ever want to know why the party has been such a massive failure since Reagan.

Jeff Carlson, CFA:

Trump Is Right to Declassify FISA Documents, but Political Process Is Complex

The protection of classified material is crucial to national security and concerns about that should be taken seriously. Of long-standing focus with regard to the declassification process has been the protection of sources and methods. This was explicitly noted by White House chief legal counsel Don McGahn in a cover letter upon release of the House intelligence committee memo:

“Though the circumstances leading to the declassification through this process are extraordinary, the Executive Branch stands ready to work with Congress to accommodate oversight requests consistent with the applicable standards and processes, including the need to protect intelligence sources and methods.”

McGahn is correct in his stated concerns. But what happens when “sources” are fictitiously created, using improper or even illegal “methods” that hide behind classified designations as a means to prevent detection.

Governor Inslee sinks to new level of petty by refusing to sign certificates for marksmanship champs

Back in 1903, there was a group that started in our nation called the Civilian Marksmanship Program. They would get together and have shooting competitions. It was for a while under the auspices of the Department of Defense. Here in Washington, they have a couple of groups that go and compete in marksmanship — the Washington State Rifle and Pistol Association, and the Washington State Police Pistol Association.

This organization always holds an annual banquet, where the top shooters — both civilians and law enforcement officers — are given certificates signed by the governor. Most states do this every year. It’s known as the Governor’s 20.

“The Governor’s 20 has been around for years — it’s a competition of law enforcement officers [who] are competing for skills,” Jane Milhans of the Washington State Rifle and Pistol Association told me.

This year, however, Governor Inslee’s office sent this letter ahead of the banquet.

“The certificates that were signed last May will be the final certificates signed by the governor … Governor Inslee is no longer able to support any program affiliated with the National Rifle Association (NRA), due to the organization’s obstructive efforts to undermine common sense gun safety measures, including those that enjoy broad public support. We understand competitors will be disappointed by this decision; however, the Governor [sic] believes constructive conversations and meaningful action around gun safety are necessary to better protect our families and communities.”

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) also expressed support for the move in a statement to the AP.

Perhaps one of the reasons they are so upset is that the butthurt is so painful that their kumbaya globalist bullshit is being seen for what it is. They got called on it and they really don't like that. Bono had a great buddy in Barack and now Trump won't take his calls.

They have become parodies of themselves. Someone really needs to do a cartoon series. They could start with a Santa Monica or Berkeley city hall meeting and go from there.

Politics is sausage making, and what they have done is to marginalize themselves so thoroughly that I really do think that if there is some common sense left in the American people, they will be sadly surprised in November.

Betamax Brown reminds me of the gov officials sans NASA, that banned discussion of the moon landings, because it encouraged many.

FEMA, First Responders and Law Enforcement are working really hard on hurricane Florence. As the storm begins to finally recede, they will kick into an even higher gear. Very Professional!

Isn’t Manafort cooperating when he says no collusion. He should get as much credit, maybe more, by sticking to the truth. After all Mueller is seeking justice not political revenge, isn’t he.?
