I am sick to my stomach of all of the hatred. This is what happens when politicians inflame people every day and the media pours gasoline on the fire.

My mother had me read the True Believer when I was a kid and we see it with so many fringe groups now. It is mainstreaming.

My grade school music book had lots of hymns and patriotic songs. Consequently, I know the lyrics to all of the military service songs and many hymns. My sisters and I would often sing them while riding in the back of my folks' Chevy station wagon on long road trips.

Matt, my beloved 17 year old son, learned about an hour ago, that one of his buddies at H.S. had taken his own life this morning. My son looked at his phone and realized that 12 hours ago, they were texting each other and laughing.
There is the annual FOLLIES H.S. play tonight at his high school. It will be somber. I sat for an hour with him and told him that there is sickness and there is evil. We moved into my grade school's district in December. The Christmas program was already cast and there I was, a rather shabby tomboy and rather than leave me out, Mr. Taylor the art teacher made me fancy large wings out of cardboard and they got a white choir robe and a made a halo out of tinsel.

I was the angel standing above the choir while they snag Angels We Have Heard On High while the Nativity story was recreated.

I never forgot that act of kindness.

Miss M - local grade schools until the late 1990s had music. Our school had weekly assemblies to sing all kinds of songs- patriotic, traditional, silly, serious and even popular. One teacher formed a glee club and took the children to senior citizens' groups. At their school, our sons learned words to "the Trout" and Japanese songs among many others. I would be surprised if there are even music books in classes today in my area.
