Just got back from a busy week of travel. First three days in Denver on bidness, and then three days in Lake Forest helping Buckeyette settle into her new apartment.
The movers took care of the big stuff and I spent several days putting together Ikea bookshelves, TV stand, a bed frame and a vacuum cleaner. Also repaired several doors, a leaking shower head and got her tied into an ISP.
She definitely doesn't know which end of a wrench to grab:)
At home now with my feet up.

Good Morning.
Take it FWIW, and "From" whom it's worth, but larry Sabato on FOX just said that in general Republicans are more apt to vote on Election Day than Dems in this new world of early voting and absentee voting, so he says the voting on Election Day will give a boost to the Republicans. Therefore if the early voting is not going as well for the Dem's as predicted, and Repubs are doing well in early voting, under Sabato's logic things are looking positive for the Republicans.

Gab.com Statement On The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting
Gab.com’s policy on terrorism and violence have always been very clear: we a have zero tolerance for it. Gab unequivocally disavows and condemns all acts of terrorism and violence. This has always been our policy. We are saddened and disgusted by the news of violence in Pittsburgh and are keeping the families and friends of all victims in our thoughts and prayers.
We refuse to be defined by the media’s narratives about Gab and our community. Gab’s mission is very simple: to defend free expression and individual liberty online for all people. Social media often brings out the best and the worst of humanity. From live streamed murders on Facebook, to threats of violence by bombing suspect Cesar Sayoc Jr. that went unaddressed by Twitter, and more. Criminals and criminal behavior exist on every social media platform.
Shortly after the attack, Gab was alerted to a user profile of the alleged Tree of Life Synagogue shooter. The account was verified and matched the name of the alleged shooter’s name, which was mentioned on police scanners. This person also had accounts on other social networks.
Gab took swift and proactive action to contact law enforcement immediately. We first backed up all user data from the account and then proceeded to suspend the account. We then contacted the FBI and made them aware of this account and the user data in our possession. We are ready and willing to work with law enforcement to see to it that justice is served.
We have nothing but love for all people and freedom. We have consistently disavowed all violence. Free speech is crucial for the prevention of violence. If people can not express themselves through words, they will do so through violence. No one wants that. No one.
Our user guidelines state:
Threats and Terrorism:
Users are prohibited from calling for the acts of violence against others, promoting or engaging in self-harm, and/or acts of cruelty, threatening language or behaviour that clearly, directly and incontrovertibly infringes on the safety of another user or individual(s). We may also report the user(s) to local and/or federal law enforcement, as per the advice of our legal counsel.
Our privacy agreement state:
Information Disclosed for Our Protection and the Protection of Others.
We cooperate with government and law enforcement officials or private parties to enforce and comply with the law. We may disclose any information about you to government or law enforcement officials or private parties as we, in our sole discretion, believe necessary or appropriate: (i) to respond to claims, legal process (including subpoenas); (ii) to protect our property, rights and safety and the property, rights and safety of a third party or the public in general; and (iii) to stop any activity that we consider illegal or legally actionable activity.

Willowed on the last thread, transported here:
rse:
How, precisely, is Brooks a stand-in for Haidt? You simply started with an "if" and have proceeded as though it were a fact, and went on to conflate them in your reply to me.
"If he is describing himself as 'conservative' then it is arthur brooks conservatism with th same goals as progressivism."
Well, Haidt has not, to my knowledge, ever claimed to be a conservative, so it seems the association with Brooks you're positing is a non-starter. Indeed, I think it has served Haidt's professional work to deliberately position himself outside of the usual left/right political spectrum. Of course, there is no reason that a Buddhist cannot be a conservative. Chaco is a buddhist, and nobody on earth would mistake him for a progressive.
All of which is pretty much irrelevant. Just because Haidt is willing to talk and write about being buddhist and how it might be helpful, doesn't make him the spearhead of orientalism. I have certainly seen no evidence of that in the work he's been publishing about the nature of the values divide in this country, or the appalling intellectual environment on campuses. I think the quality of his research is pretty clear in the accuracy of the conclusions he has drawn more skillfully than almost anyone else I can think of. I believe Haidt's work is an important inflection point in the body politic. Whether or not you agree, I think he deserves better than an easy dismissal on generic grounds.

Yah! I completed my biannual flight review yesterday...
...There wasn't enough altitude to practice stalls and we had to settle for 45 degree bank turns and a go-around (aborted landing).
Hoyden,
Speaking of having enough altitude for stalls, in the punishment inflicted on us last week in our 3 days in the Memphis Simulator, the FAA training mandates had us doing the stall series at 10,000 feet, then they had us re-doing it at 38,000 feet. We were told that as a consequence of that Air France plane a few years back which picked up icing in the pitot tubes halfway across the Atlantic and plummeted into the ocean* the FAA decided we needed to enter full stalls at 6 miles high. Yikes! What an uncomfortable feeling in a heavy passenger/cargo jet:(
And we were doing it in Memphis because they have an MD-10 Simulator. We are dual qualled on the Md-10 and the MD-11, but we Anchorage guys have not flown an MD-10 in over 10 years since all we do is long haul International stuff and they save the MD-10 for short run domestic puddle-jumps out of Memphis.
So they put us in this unfamiliar sloppy beast of an MD-10 Simulator, zapped us up to 38 grand, had us do the full squirrel cage, and then had us do steep turns of 30's bank angles for 90 degrees of heading and reversal, and having to manually work the throttles to be holding airspeed just above stick shaker and/or stall buffet. Then they had us reduce power and hold the nose up through stall buffet, then through stick shaker, and into 45 nose up full stall unusual attitude before falling off and nose plummet, and then we had to scramble to recover and it was thousands of feet later we were able to recover without ripping the wings off. We did that about a dozen. Man, was that uncomfortable!
Anyhow, most un-fun Sim periods I can recall in my 30 years at the company:) By the end of the 3rd day I noticed at breakfast in the hotel that my underarms hurt, so I looked in the mirror up in my bathroom and noticed I had red rings of chaffing under both armpits from sweating and friction while having to do so much strenuous backpull in these stupid scenarios just to get into the full stalls and recovery.
Thankfully since I am nearing retirement I will never have to go back to Memphis for training again, and I'll never see another MD-10 for forever. {redacted} the FAA. Keep the purple side up!
* If you watched the frightening video I linked above on the Airbus crash, the Air France had some awful design problems. First, we are told that the heat to the pitot tubes was less than US planes heat to pitot tubes, because previously when AirBus's were sitting on the ramp and the heat was turned on it would cause some replacement problems, so to reduce that minor problem their engineers we are told decided a good fix was to reduce the amount of heating to their pitot tubes, which solved the relatively inconsequential ground problem but left them much more vulnerable to airborne icing problems than in Boeing or McDonnell Douglas products. Second, the Airbus does not have a yoke but instead has a joy stick controller to the side of each pilot, and neither pilot could see nor feel what the other pilot was doing with his joy stick, so if one guy on one side was trying to lower the nose while the other guy was pulling back, the first guy who made an input had priority that the plane responded to. In the crash the guy in the left seat basically had a death grip pulling back for 36,000 feet of plummet, never allowing the plane to get it's nose lowered to start flying again and get out of the stall. He didn't release back pressure on the joystick until about 2,000 feet altitude remaining over the ocean, not enough time and altitude to recover from the stall prior to impact. Thankfully in our planes we have a Yoke system, so whatever I do with the control yoke is copied by the First officers yoke, so we know and can see and feel exactly what inputs the plane is responding to. Just putting that out there to make you passengers feel better. Apologies for being so long winded.

Jimmyk: seriously, you cannot make this stuff up. Too funny.
This is a constant with a certain type of liberal, I find. Throughout their incessant pontifications they emit a steady stream of some real howlers, all the while completely oblivious to how comically foolish this makes them appear to the rest of us.
Yes, it is no doubt true that it is often due to their superficial grasp of the topic at hand--and more often then not, complete ignorance--but the will do this on topics they actually understand quite well. One can say that they are just mired in their emotions, but this really will not do: these are parodies of emotions--they have not much to do with real, adult emotions. It is as though they are acting out some movie script in their heads and the rest of the whole world are props in the scene. Just who exactly do they imagine the audience is, anyway?
Again, too funny.

I have no dog in the Johnathon Haidt fracas, having read very little if anything by the dude, but thought this interview where he talks specifically about Buddhism and what Buddha got wrong to be pretty interesting.
Unfortunately he doesn't seem to follow that up with the basic understanding that Buddhism is based on an impossible and undesirable premise that denies not only our evil desires but many of the most noble and denies in some sense man himself, finding him fully as flawed as the Judeo-Christian faith and then relying on this hopelessly flawed creature to perfect himself.
Talk about a recipe for misery.

i'd be skeptical that no motivation could be found regarding Paddock ...
I think there needs to be a lot more grilling of his Filipino girlfriend and her extended family.
Just for instance I first read that the Bomb-Maker was half Phillipino, not half Puerto Rican as in Clarice's excellent Pieces. Do we have a definitive answer to that question?

Clarice
That's good to hear. I first found out about it from Dr Savage.
It sounds like The Tree of Life is analogous to a Father Pfleger flavor Column A Column B type church.

Not quite sure of the reference, but I believe Tree of Life is a Conservative synagogue. The Conservative movement is indeed a sort of compromise between the Orthodox and the Reform, and consequently is dwindling, at least from what I understand.

The risk these populists face is they only attain power after the crooks and liars have so ruined the system that it usually crashes on the populists' watch.

Half Phillipino--my typo. Father returned home when the bomb guy was young.

"And I think we, as leaders, we got to figure out how do we make inclusive aspirational politics strategically valuable again?"
Just fuck off, Pud Ryan. That isn't an elected official's job.
And just WTF are "aspirational politics?" You are a no good wonk who has allowed rot to fester right in front of you and did NOTHING.
So i don't want YOU grading the President of the United States.
Enjoy your family, get a good battery of enemas, and STFU forever.
There. That is all.
