Anyone who wants to blow up George Soros's schemes should do so on Nov. 6. METAPHORICALLY!
An explosive device was found on Monday in a mailbox at a home of George Soros, the billionaire philanthropist who is a favorite target of right-wing groups, in a suburb north of New York City, the authorities said.
A law enforcement official confirmed that the device was found near Mr. Soros’s home. It did not explode on its own, and bomb squad technicians “proactively detonated” it, the official said.
This is actually scary, probably to the point of stupid [UPDATE has a more sensible version]:
Federal and state law enforcement officials responded to the scene in Katonah, N.Y., a hamlet in the upscale town of Bedford in northern Westchester County, after the Bedford Police Department received a call about a suspicious package at about 3:45 p.m.
“An employee of the residence opened the package, revealing what appeared to be an explosive device,” the police said in a statement. “The employee placed the package in a wooded area and called the Bedford police.”
Say what? OK, the package hadn't exploded yet but I strongly suspect that pressing your luck is the wrong play. If possible, evacuate the premises and lets the trained and equipped professionals do the carrying.
Or, if unwrapping the package activated something and the bomb might have exploded in a couple of minutes, let Soros pay for a new entrance foyer. Yike.
Anyway, yeah, yeah, no suspects have been found, no motivation is known, so it might be a false flag lefty operation, it might be a disgruntled kook with a grievance unrelated to politics or the political calendar, it might be a lot of things. But it might be a right-wing nutjob, and on the off chance this person is persuadable, let me add my voice to those saying, save that energy for organizing and voting. No bombs. Geez.
UPDATE: A new Times story has these details:
Officers from the police department in the town of Bedford, N.Y., initially responded to the Soros home in the hamlet of Katonah, at about 3:45 p.m. Monday in response to a call from the caretaker about a suspicious package, according to a police department statement. The Westchester County Police Department’s bomb squad was called, as were federal and state investigators.
“The caretaker went out to collect the mail and didn’t make it back to the residence,” a senior law enforcement official said. The device was packed in an envelope that was about 8 by 10 inches and “looked suspicious.” The caretaker “dropped it in the woods on the way back to the residence.”
In the age of Amazon Prime, what small package looks suspicious?
I suspect the employee is more involved than he is letting on.
BTW, TM, your "blockquote" is off by one paragraph at "Say what?..."

This story is worse than Rathergate.
Old and busted: I made a copy of the document and then burned the original - just to be safe.
New and hot: I opened up the suspicious package, and when it didn't explode, I took it for a walk outside - just to be safe.

How do we vote against Soros?
If we vote against him, will the caravans stop, even in Europe?
Posted by: Extraneus | October 23, 2018 at 10:08 AM
That caravan is spooking a lot of people. Over on CTH they somehow think that the Mexicans intend to add 40,000 to the group and storm multiple crossing areas.
Another person is concerned with people already here being a sleeper force.

I think the caravan is poorly-conceived agitprop and nothing more. I've tried to twist it into something more sinister, but there are no scenarios that make sense.

From my comment on the previous thread, it seems Mexicans can be sent back, but Hondurans and Guatemalans (because they don't share a border with the US) have to be processed once they cross the border. But how would border agents know where they're from? That's aside from the impossibility of dealing with tens of thousands.

Someone here linked an article on how Hungary (I think) handled refugees. They created a sorta no-mans-land where refugees had to wait while their requests were processed. They could wait in that area or go home or move along.
They were not allowed in Hungary.
Maybe we could do that...designate some area as a territory or whatever (like the left does, just give it another name)...& make anyone crossing the border wait there.
Don't allow them to step onto US soil until they have been approved.
If anyone can find that link, I'd appreciate it. I think the country was Hungary, but I'm not sure.

Hungary did that to get around EU laws that made them take in refugees.
Once in, the refugees had to be processed a certain way by EU law...so essentially they got to stay.
So Hungary found a way to just not let them onto Hungarian soil.
The sad part is that we are having to work around our OWN stupid, lousy laws.

As a follow up to yesterday’s discussion of assisted care living, particularly Clarice’s mom’s situation, I have good friends in Cowlumbus, specifically Dublin right next to our old shop there, who have moved to a lovely new complex along the river. The hubby was Chief Engineer of Timken and we even did a paper together over four decades ago that still gets referenced.
Anyway, this new complex is like a cruise ship. You could spend the rest of your life there and never step outside, if you chose to. It has everything to keep you comfortable and busy. Hobby/workshops, grocery, pharmacy, exercise, the works. Obviously, the assisted part is provided as necessary. The couple had done the typical progression from large suburban home to condo to this. Both are still healthy and active, but wanted to remove the overhead from their daily time commitments.
We aren’t likely to do anything like that, but I can see eventually needing live in care at our place, if we can continue to afford it. Of course, Jane would have to give up the lease on the Treehouse. :)

Google is facing increased pressure from the U.S. government to share location information, possibly on thousands of innocent people, Forbes can reveal. That’s because of a string of so-called “reverse location” orders.
Here’s how it works: cops send Google specific coordinates and timezones within which crimes were committed. Then Google is asked to provide information on all users within those locations at those times, most likely including data on many innocent people.

Man Tran, that retirement community sounds great (though probably expensive). But to reiterate my dim view of assisted living: It works for such a small fraction of people and for such a short window of time, that it seems almost like window-dressing or euthanasia. In my admittedly limited experience, people in assisted living in all likelihood die from complications of a fall, because the "assistance" is always just down the hall.
Similar to Clarice's story, after my father had a non-catastrophic fall, we quickly realized the only way to keep him alive was 24/7 aides. It is expensive of course, and he's drawing down his assets, but gradually enough that he's unlikely to run out of money.
How many people over the age of, say, 80, need "assistance" but aren't at risk of falling?

I ran a toss an interesting theory, on a podcast I watch( Brendon M. Dilley on Periscope.). He cusses a lot and is a younger guy, so not everyone's cup of tea.)
I thought this was interesting, and made some sense since I watched that Jared Kushner interview this morning.
Dilly believes that Kushner and various military people have a number, a metric, which indicates enough public support for Trump and his movement that, once passed, indicates that they can proceed with arrests without causing massive amounts of civil unrest.
This is why big rallies, voter turnout, and the Walkaway movement are all important.
I thought this was an interesting idea and possibly why things seem to be moving slowly in that area, which is not normally how Trump does things. Kushner made a point in that CNN interview of saying how his father-in-law likes people to move quickly.

As of this morning the RCP House analysis has 205 seats for the Dems, 200 for the GOP, and 30 TCTC (if TCTC is not a known acronym, I'm patenting it). So, Dems need to win 13 of those 30 seats to win control of the House. Do I think they will? Nope, no way, I don't think so.
hrt, I took a look at the 30 "tossups" and here's what I saw.
Very very little polling and most have NO recent polling. Several have only one poll, TOTAL, most of them old.
Kavanaugh was confirmed on 10/6.
I don't see how the poll handicappers can rely on this data. It's almost all NYT/Siena and it's almost all old.
CA10 - last poll 9/23, two polls total
CA25 - last poll 9/25, two polls total
IL6 - SINGLE poll 9/6
NJ7 - SINGLE poll 9/17
TX7 - SINGLE poll 9/18
VA5 - SINGLE poll 10/22 - how was this race categorized at all prior to yesterday? Has the D +1. Ridiculous.
CA25 - last poll 9/23, two polls total, local paper recently endorsed the R
KS2 - last poll 9/28, two polls total
NM2 - last poll 9/18, two polls total
NY22 - SINGLE poll 8/26 !!!!
TX32 - SINGLE poll 9/24
VA7, last poll 9/24, two polls total
CA39 - last poll 9/23, two polls total
IA3 - last poll 9/30, two polls total
KY6 - SINGLE poll 9/8
UT4 - several polls, all with Love ahead, outside MOE, except one on 10/11 showing a tie - why is this even in the tossup category, should be Leans GOP.
WA8 - two polls total, last poll on 10/9 has R+ 10, prior poll on 9/26 had D+1. Should be leans GOP.
I'll call it, the GOP holds the House.

Good afternoon! We decided to early vote this morning. The Sarasota County administration building we went to has an efficient process, all the better to get the geezers thru the voting process. Ha. Then we went to lunch at a restaurant built on pilings over a small lake. I looked thru the window and saw a gator eyeballing us as we ate lunch. Just think, there will be snow in the woods in Maine tonight!

This article doesn't have a simplified map, but it seems to me that if it is going to hit areas of Texas hit by Michael and the. Produce a nor'easter in New England, it absolutely will intersect the path of those migrants.

Porch, thanks for looking at those districts; I had figured there would be a dearth of actual polling there. I'd like it if election day was today - I think the GOP is in good shape. But there's two very long weeks to go, so lots of time to worry...

9th Cir. rules that the warrant the FBI used to authorize its Tor Browser crack was invalid and a "fundamental, constitutional error," joining two other circuits in saying it violated the 4th Amendment. But the good faith exception applies.
