My local rag, The Hartford Courant, chooses to edify and entertain us with the wisdom of two of our finest minds in their Letters section on the Opinion Page:
One proclaiming that Jen Rubin is a "great reporter" (she is an opinion columnist) and a fine example of the balanced commentary that the Courant provides (this in response to criticism that Rubin is "no Conservative", which is manifestly true and which the writer makes no effort to refute);
The second from one Sara Walker of Manchester who bemoans the fact that as fall comes upon us it is no longer a good idea for women to walk alone in the park after 6:30, citing several murders which have occurred over the past few years. The reason this is not a good idea is because---you guessed it---Donald J. Trump! Because if she were to get killed by some predatory criminal while walking alone at night people might blame her for being incautious and that is (apparently) because Trump makes people hate each other. Or something.

I don't have an online subscription so I can't link. These people are self-evident morons. Yet the collective minds of the Courant's editorial board feel that theirs is the primary wisdom their readers should be hearing this fine Sunday morning.

CNN PANEL ON CONFRONTING LAWMAKERS IN PUBLIC: ‘THERE ARE BAD PEOPLE ON BOTH SIDES’

Turning the argument back to President Trump, Stelter said, “I think the problem with the core of this conversation is that we are living through an age of incivility led by President Trump.”

Stelter also invoked the Tea Party — suggesting that Trump was hypocritical to attack Democrats now if he wasn’t critical of conservative protests — but made no mention of the fact that conservative protesters had never confronted Democrats in stores or restaurants, disrupting their meals or driving them out of public places.

“The problem for the Democrats is that there is no person with equal stature,” Stelter continued. “Nobody as loud or effective as President Trump to push back on his ‘jobs not mobs’ rhetoric. It’s also propaganda, and he’ll say it over and over again until Election Day … We are seeing examples of this extreme behavior on both sides.”

Trump's 'very dangerous' decision to abandon nuclear accord has 'mankind facing full chaos,' Russia says

"We condemn the ongoing attempts by blackmail to achieve concessions from Russia," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told a state news agency. "This would be a very dangerous step."

Konstatin Kosachev, who chairs the foreign affairs committee in the Federation Council, Russia's upper house of parliament, wrote on Facebook that Trump's decision meant "mankind is facing full chaos in the nuclear weapons sphere."

And prominent Russian senator Aleksey Pushkov charged that Trump's move meant "United States is bringing the world back to the Cold War," saying the U.S.' withdrawal from the treaty would be a "massive blow to the entire system of strategic stability in the world."

James D.

Serious question: how is it that newspaper endorsements of candidates do not fall under campaign finance laws?

If I had the cash to buy a full page ad on the back page of the A section of the NYT and wanted to write all about why I think a particular candidate should be elected, I could t do it without jumping through s lot of hoops and reporting myself to the FEC and so forth and maybe I could t legally do it st all.

So why can the NYT take the entire inside back page of the A section to write all about why they think a particular candidate should be elected, and that’s perfectly legal and no hoop-jumping or reporting is required?

Miss Marple

Andrew Gillum’s Family Under Investigation; May Have Engaged in Voter Fraud

Less than a year before gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum publicly denounced President Donald Trump’s efforts to investigate the threat of voter fraud, Gillum’s brother, Marcus Gillum, voted in the 2016 general election in Tallahassee, Florida while a resident of Chicago, Illinois. According to Florida law, you must be a legal resident in Florida to vote in elections. Casting an illegal vote in Florida is a third-degree felony.

Andrew Gillum and his brother Marcus are close. Media reports indicate they have traveled together and attended sporting events together. Also, Marcus Gillum has been caught up in the FBI investigation involving possible corruption in Tallahassee, Florida.

Leon County voting records show Marcus Gillum voted by absentee in the 2012 general election, absentee in the 2014 primary election, and early voted in the 2016 general election.

But the trouble is, months before he cast that 2016 ballot in Florida, Marcus Gillum, in an affidavit for an unrelated court case, swore under oath he was a resident of Chicago.

Dem Mayor Hints He Will Soon Decide About Running For President In 2020

BY: Jeffrey Cimmino Follow @jeffcimmino October 21, 2018 10:24 am

The Democratic mayor of Los Angeles indicated he is seriously considering a run for the presidency in 2020. Eric Garcetti said he will likely make a decision in the next two months as to whether he will run during an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union."

"Well, first and foremost I'm having important conversations at home, but I'm mostly focused in the next sixteen days at making sure we have a Congress," Garcetti said in response to a question about his decision-making process by anchor Jake Tapper. "Because President Trump isn't on the ballot, but a Congress that enables him is, that seems to be either bullies, brown-nosers, or bunglers, folks who are either kissing up to the president, folks who are mirroring his bullying, or folks who are just ineffective at getting anything done.

"But I'll make a decision probably in the next couple months, and I do hope whether I do or not that mayors do look at this," Garcetti continued.

In April, Garcetti traveled to Iowa to meet with local officials, firefighters, activists, and others, fueling speculation that he was laying the groundwork for a 2020 presidential run. He also claimed "California is the same as Iowa" before making the trip.

BREAKING: Man Steps Forward with Sexual Assault Allegations against Sen. Cory Booker — With Lawyer’s Response to Gateway Pundit

Momto2, from my book, the chapter On exploring character:

“Literature uncovers interesting observations about virtue. In Sir Gawain and the Green Night, Gawain represented the ideals of the Round Table. The tests of desire and the fear of death faced in Gawain are the same tests that Buddha faced.

“The medieval pentangle stood for the five chivalric virtues: fidelity to others, promises, principles, faith, moral righteousness, and personal integrity. Elsewhere they are recorded as generosity, loyalty to and love of others—sometimes called piety, temperance or freedom from lust, courtesy, and benevolence.”

“Is there overlay in what different cultures consider virtues?
“That’s a fair question. Confucian virtues were very similar to those of Socrates in ancient Greece or Mohandras Gandhi in India—wisdom, justice, moderation, courage. Are there universal human values that stand up to scrutiny better than the virtues? And how do you know the virtues you’d teach are true virtues? What about wealth or fame? Are they virtues?”
“That’s ad hominem. The real question is ‘What is character and how do you get it?’ Virtues have been described as those traits a culture values. Our job is to discover them.” ...

Speaking of Andrew Gillum. He's corrupt and a socialist. If you calculate the cost of the programs he is espousing, Florida would have to raise their sales tax to 37%. He's the mayor of Tallahassee and has turned it to the most crime ridden city in the state. And he is leading DdeSantos by 1%.

If Wyoming’s A Bellwether, Dems Could Be In For A World Of Hurt: Thousands Switch Party Affiliation To GOP

Post Kavanaugh hearing.

Via BPR:

It’s getting harder to see the blue wave Democrats have been predicting would be coming for the November midterm elections.

And in Wyoming, it seems the only wave they have witnessed is a red one.

In the weeks leading up to the state’s primary election on August 21, over 12,000 voters changed their party affiliation. A staggering number of those changes were to the Republican Party, County 10 reported.

According to data released by the Wyoming Secretary of State’s Office on Thursday:

12,509 persons in total changed their party affiliation between July 6th and September 20th:

6,057 Democrats changed and registered as Republicans;
4,355 Unaffiliated persons changed and registered as Republicans;
744 Unaffiliated persons changed and registered as Democrats;
477 members of the Constitution and Libertarian parties changed and registered as Republicans;
430 Republicans changed and registered as Democrats; and
296 persons of various parties changed and registered as Unaffiliated.

The report did note, however, that 701 of those people changed their party affiliation again, re-registering back to their original 2018 party affiliation

A-Bob: “I wish someone would explain the concept of insurance to them.”

Jimmy: "Don’t expect the GOPe to do that, since they are complete cowards on this issue."

A-Bob knows that to more than half the population, "Insurance" means somebody else pays for everything I need. Textbook definitions going all the way back to sailing ships expanding the markets for all producers by "inventing insurance" have long long been replaced by the government defining it for healthcare, or for hurricane coverage, or for auto insurance and all the other risks of life.

Jimmy also knows that, as Codevilla be be quick to say, it is not the the R's lack the courage to "splain it", they don't really believe in it themselves, preferring my definition above, which is the Uniparty Platform.

Extraneus

I didn't see the assault in the guy's description of what happened, not that I know what the word means anymore. Just an attempt to take advantage of a groupie.

"Trump’s most significant legislative accomplishment has been the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which cut taxes for most Americans but overwhelmingly benefited corporations and the wealthy. Despite his and the Republican Party’s efforts to sell the bill, it’s not popular with voters, and most Americans say they don’t see it in their paychecks..."

Then most people will be delighted to learn that it was only a temporary tax bill that sunsets in 2026, the effects of which will begin years before that as long term thinkers make new plans for the coming return to the old laws.

Oh. And anybody who can not point to all the astounding economics statistics which promptly followed the passage of that bill and can not "sell" that cause and effect to "most people", and who cannot suggest to those people that "Cause:Effect" works precisely in both directions.... needs to get out of Sales.

Old Lurker

"But assault is another thing entirely."

Yeah, it wasn't so clear, but there were words like "pushed" and "pulled" to describe Booker's actions.
