Jane,

Appreciate the invite. Capt. Eric in Sarasota may be there but I think he goes to DC. I will keep you up to date.

Has there ever been a POTUS in anyone's lifetime who has done so much to turn an election in his favor with these rallies?

Man Tran

Lyle,

Is your uncle still living? My FIL passed nearly 20 yrs ago, so no crosscheck with him. (Lifelong smoker like many from that era.)

Jane

Ex,

Another Barabara's brine recipe which she posted here many years ago. Spectacular!

Janet

((Clarice, regarding your 3:18 post, didn't Mueller charge one of those Russian defendants with defrauding the USA? I would think Rosenstein and Mueller both could be in similar jeopardy themselves. The SC investigation is itself fraudulent, and Mueller has been burning through the money like crazy.))

Tom,
This post at CTH brings up that latest charge against some Russian lady - https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2018/10/20/rank-and-file-a-conspicuous-absence-of-visible-indignation/

scroll down to - "So that takes us to yesterday: Friday, October 19, 2018…"

It seems pretty lame.

". The DOJ is charging a Russian woman named Ms. Khusyaynova with “conspiracy to defraud the U.S.” through social media facebook memes and shit-posting on twitter."

Brining is the way to go, Jane. After that, Alton recommends coating the bird with butter and starting the roast at 500F, then putting a heavy-duty foil "breastplate" on it after the skin is nicely browned and going 350 the rest of the way. Comes out great every time.

I knew some Puerto Ricans many moons ago who would use hypodermic syringes to inject wine into the turkey, which also turned out quite good.

(One of them was a nurse, I think.)

Jim Eagle

Janet,

Be careful. You could be next. These Asshats have no conscience when it comes to protecting the Deep State.

Trump approval jumps ahead of Obama’s midterm approval rating

The poll found Trump's approval rating at its highest level for that poll yet, at 47 percent. Obama's approval rating was 45 percent around the same time in 2010, according to a similar NBC/Wall Street Journal poll taken in late October 2010.

Obama's approval rating was reaching a record low in October 2010, just before his party lost a significant number of seats in the House and Senate.

Trump is a historically unpopular president among the general U.S. population, but consistently retains extremely high levels of Republican support. Recent polls have put him at around a 90 percent approval rating among Republicans.

Many see the midterm elections as a referendum on the current president.

Ex,

Sometimes Alton Brown is so anal retentive, I cannot stay and follow him. Plus most of his recipes take a moon to configure and replicate. But glad you found one that works for you.

Extraneus's 6:09 is EXCELLENT news! Oh my goodness!!!

We bought an oil less fryer for turkeys and absolutely love it. Just some cajun injection under the skin and into the breast, and put it in and set it for the weight. Auto cooks and shuts off when done. Super juicy!

And no messy clean up or oil to dispose of. And no fireman visiting when frying a turkey and it wasn't quite defrosted yet.

I use the drippings to make the gravy with a bit of an add of more turkey stock and then add whatever else you want to put in the gravy and all done. I like lots of boiled egg and the giblets from the inside.. just saute and dice and add plus a bit of the meat from the bird.

Nice thing is you can use it on the back deck/porch and not have the house heat up to 200 degrees when all the company arrives. Saves the oven for casseroles, too.

You can also use the oil less fryer for prime rib or pork roast, and it is just as juicy.

Extraneus

I was a big fan of Alton's when we used to watch Food Network. Learned a lot from him. Even bought one of his books.

He thinks of the science of cooking. The why, as opposed to simply following recipes.

After watching him, I actually spent several years reading On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen, two or three pages a night to get to sleep. Great book.

I cook the turkey in a smoker. It is very moist (!) and tastes great. Everyone who has had it loves it. Do try!

Miss Marple

I used to match Alton Brown all the time, when I had cable.

He's got a wicked sense of humor, but he is also very anal-retentive on food prep and p ice dure

Extraneus

Like one of these, Steph? Never heard of them before.

(Click to open.)

Extraneus

A pellet smoker, Doc? I have one, and have a tried turkey breast in it but it didn't come out so great. Any clue as to smoking temp or wood type?

DrJ

Ext,

Our smoker is simple: an electrical resistance heater with chip tray at the bottom, and an aluminum barrel above it. There is a pan or two to catch drippings.

I drench the chips -- usually a mix of cherry or apple and a darker wood like mesquite -- and then heat to where the chips steam. So it is as much steaming as smoking, I suppose, and that's what keeps it moist.

It works well.

Kamala Harris Rolls Out $6,000 Annual Tax Gimmick Three Weeks Before Midterm Election

"Americans are working harder than ever but stagnant wages mean they can’t keep up with cost of living increases," Harris said in a Thursday statement, citing a 2017 survey from Bankrate.com which found that more than half of Americans can't afford a $500 unexpected expense - such as a medical bill, rent increase or child care.
According to Harris’ office, recipients could receive the money in either monthly payments or annually.

“The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy estimates the (bill) would impact one in every two workers and two out of every three children in America,” according to Harris’ office, in addition to approximately 1 million Pell Grant-eligible college students. -SacBee

Harris' plan has the support of several prominent liberals, such as California NAACP president Alice Huffman, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs and the mayors of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland and Long Beach.

Back to Michael Goodwin, is this woman even worth worrying about? Wages aren't stagnant, Kameltoe.

Deep-fried turkey is the only way to go. And no brining is required. :)

Agreed. The brining helps a lot.

Some moons ago, I bought a house that used to be a gun club. I'd been there for a bachelor party 15 years prior, in fact, but it was ultimately converted to a house. In the backyard, there was a concrete slab, about 4x4'. I deep fried a few things there, and I think that was the whole point of the slab.

Sounds to me like the Saudi's did just what the DEM's have been advising their followers to do for years----Kashoggi went to a fist fight and the Saudi's brought knives, so what's the problem?

Stephanie, Nene, Not your Normal Grandma

My son's in laws fry about a dozen turkeys for various friends and relatives and have a rig set up in the back yard with a stainless steel rope between two trees and a pulley system on it to raise lower their turkeys. Can't be too careful.

I can't tell the difference between the oil less and the ones he does - he used to do one for us every year til I got the new toy. Now if it is bad weather, I just put the oil less on the covered deck and no messing with mud/snow/etc.

DrJ

I will say that my favorite Tehran-born, NYC-German-raised Pakistani swears by her deep-fried turkeys. I've not had them.

Extraneus

Lead residue tests first?

No, and I'm sure there was plenty. Also clam shells everywhere, and even a defunct beer machine out by the southern wetland, but the only stuff I grew to eat there was grown in a box garden. Never used the native soil.

This past week I brined two turkey thighs and roasted them in the oven, let them cool, shredded them, mixed in homemade roasted tomato chipotle lime salsa and made enchiladas. Drank a ‘14 Maison Leroy Montagny with them...

(Okay, not really. I ordered that bottle last Sunday at The Ram in Sun Valley village for Mrs lyle’s b-day. The bottle arrived promptly. The rest of the dinner not so much. To say the service was a disaster is an understatement. The manager comped the food, I paid for the wine sans gratuity and walked out two and a half hours later.)

Hey lyle, I stayed at the Sun Valley Lodge last year on my way from Jackson Hole to Boise. While there, I saw one of the funniest things I'd ever seen.

A troupe of girly-boys being drilled in figure skating. After noticing this scene, I really couldn't control myself except to take a short video before losing it watching these twinks.

Don't think I've laughed that hard in years.

That’s my stomping grounds, Ext., for 30+ years. I have a very funny story involving Brian Boitano practicing for the ice show that I’ll share one day. NB for everyone unfamiliar with Sun Valley: they put in an ice rink when the lodge was built in ‘38. Ice shows are still a big thing to this day, drawing the best talent on earth. Not necessarily my thing but it’s a big deal to the tourists, believe me.

Same here, but the local performance house featured him on a glossy card-board mailer. It works well for getting a door with an underlying rubber strip to close properly.
