The Department of State is disputing a report that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo listened to an alleged audio recording during a trip to Turkey on Wednesday of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi being murdered at the Saudi consulate earlier in October.

“Secretary Pompeo has neither heard a tape nor has he seen a transcript related to Jamal Khashoggi’s disappearance,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.

So, for tonight's KJART, here are 40 Amazing Colorized Photos of Victorian and Edwardian Women.

This time it's not for the amazing women, it's for the incredible colorization of old black & white photos. I wouldn't swear to its accuracy (there are two views of a woman, in the same hat, with different colored feathers) but the work is some of the best I've ever seen.

Klimbims Colorization 1 photo Klimbims-01_zpsfotrhcup.jpg

I have some old photos I'd love to get colorized myself, so I checked around to see how to contact the colorist (Klimbims). It seems that the artist is a Russian who just enjoys fooling around with b/w images picked up on the web!

I'm just passing the time till we hear from the folks who are watching tonight's rally, assuming they report in because they're too excited to trundle off to bed, when the Prez wraps up.

Here's a neat little quasi-time lapse animation of Versailles' evolution from its days as Louis XIII's hunting lodge to the dawn of Revolution. And if you have 52 minutes to spare, you can follow that up with Versailles' Dirty Secrets, an exploration of palatial hygiene. Or not.

The chateau of Versailles is believed to have been a dirty palace: a place where everyone tossed the contents of their chamber pots from the windows above… Yet during the chateau’s construction, Louis XIV had given thought to commodities, and several public latrines were built as well as a very modern water system. So where did this bad reputation come from?
Turns out, they thought that water made you sick.

Interesting premise and charts.

My caveats would be maybe the stock market is overvalued, but we had major changes in taxation that may justify a higher than average price.

I think he's probably right that housing prices (in some areas) have grown too quickly. OTOH, prices are still very low in some areas. That might even things out. I expect to see housing prices to grow more slowly in high-tax states and vice versa.

Notice that he is looking at net wealth, if people are borrowing more cautiously than before that will increase net wealth.

Judge: State Department Made ‘Clearly False’ Statements to Derail Clinton Lawsuits

During the heated exchange, Lamberth said that he was left “shocked” and “dumbfounded” when he discovered that the Federal Bureau of Investigation granted former Clinton chief of staff Cheryl Mills immunity during the investigation of Clinton’s infamous e-mail server — especially because Lamberth himself had found that she had previously perjured herself.

“I had myself found that Cheryl Mills had committed perjury and lied under oath in a published opinion I had issued in a Judicial Watch case where I found her unworthy of belief, and I was quite shocked to find out she had been given immunity in — by the Justice Department in the Hillary Clinton email case,” Lamberth said.

I think most of the areas seeing large price increases are inventory poor. Too few properties on the market. Too many potential buyers competing against each other driving the prices up. I don't have the cash to buy a house, but I would not want to buy into that kind of market.

Odd thing about including Beijing - I’ve been told that in China you don’t really own the property, it’s more like an extremely long lease. This done as a way of preventing wealth accumulation and movement of wealth to succeeding generations.

jim nj

I still don't see any "facts" in the Kashoggi affair.

Late to the choir discussion as usual, but last weekend was the start of fall break for ND, so the Liturgical Choir (that WonderGirl sings in) had Sunday off. A motley band of choir members, community members, and some parents there for game weekend were allowed to robe up and sing. http://catholictv.org/masses/notre-dame-mass/sunday-mass-28th-week-ordinary-time All four members of the family joined in. And yeah, it was fabulous. The Murdy Family Organ, the directors, soloists, just wow.

jim nj

Another Bob,

I never heard that before about Chinese housing ownership.

If so, I wonder if that pertains to the individual units or the land lease.

The royals in the UK own many properties that they won't sell but offer 99 yr. leases on. Trinity Church in Manhattan does the same.

Bernardi Dr la paz

Yes jiminj the Turkish commenter I had up thread seems the lead prosecutor fixan. As a,disreputable hanging judge like that Soviet judge at Nuremberg he's the one that charged pastor Brunson, who let Iranian revolutionary guards get away, the general is a tough talking military type think of him like Louis gossett (who played sad at in a film) the odds he will fall on his sword for this garbage.

jim nj

AB,

I looked it up. All land in the PRC is government owned, but can be offered on 20 or 70 year leases. So you can own a home or unit in a larger building, but the lease will have to be renewed at its' expiration.

jim nj

AB,

Some suggest this is an interim step toward private property rights in the PRC. Others aren't sure.

Bernardi,

I don't believe anything the Turks are putting out on Kashoggi.

Another Bob

I only ever heard it in the context of the unit. This was in the major cities.

Another Bob

And it was never presented as an interim anything.

This was based on conversations with a handful of Chinese “working people”.

jim nj

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/10/19/china-q3-gdp-china-posts-economic-data-amid-trade-war-with-us.html

I wonder if they massaged the data to achieve this result?

jim nj

AB,

Unit should read as a condo in a large building. Most likely in a major city or one of their planned communities. The condo is "owned", the land the building was built on is leased from the government.

The problem in any communist country, where everything is owned by the government, is how to create private property rights, leasing land could be a first step, or a final one.

Over time, full property rights are better than an overhanging land lease renewal. As the lease ages investors conserve money until the lease is renewed.

Pinandpuller

He came up with the plan to get rid of Justice Kavanaugh, but he couldn't keep quiet and had to brag about it - so now Trump and the GOP congress can use the method against the liberal justices:

“A Democratic Congress and a future Democratic president could still remove Kavanaugh from the Supreme Court if they wanted, without needing to impeach him,” Huq wrote. In the first instance, the Democrats would have to win the presidency in 2020. Then the newly-elected POTUS would simply “nominate, and the Senate would confirm by majority vote, a justice — in this case Kavanaugh — to a different post on an intermediate court of appeals.”

Such an approach would effectively demote Kavanaugh from his current position and push him to the judicial sidelines on a lower court. And while there is some measure of historical precedent for the move, it has never been done.

"Catching up, reading someone's link to Angelo Codevilla's excellent essay"
https://americanmind.org/essays/our-revolutions-logic/

He also says we are no longer one people.
And has a short discussion of partition as one of three options.

I read that Pelosi was hounded from a restaurant in Florida. Another theme sounded by Codevills is that things are beginning to pass beyond the control of leaders and being swept up into Historical Forces. Because Trump has not been allowed to govern despite having earned it we are moving on to a next stage.

It is a bleak essay. But don't miss it.

anonamom

Agree w jim nj---a must read.

henry

Codevilla points out the consequences of abandoning rule of law. When Acela corridor thugs declare themselves immune to accountability, with full cover by the Andy McCarthy types, we are screwed. Patience does not make this go away.

rse

I think codevilla's language in that essay and syntax make it barely readable.

Talk about stilted language.

JimNorCal

The language may be stilted, or there may be emotion from the realization that this is evolving into an existential struggle since the "Resistance" will not accept the result of the election.

Codevilla is clearly a Ledge dweller but without OL's wry humor and implied acceptance.
At every step along the way, it will be possible to step back from the brink. But Codevilla senses that things have begun to move on their own.

anonamom

Though I disagree about it being bleak.
I think it is accurate.
It is only bleak if you think it is essential to have NYC as part of the USA.

Based on the recent Atlanticarticle where the author used the term "Exhausted Middle," only 8% of the population is Leftists. IIRC, it is 25-8% who classify as conservatives.
That Exhausted Middle is a whole lot of people far more likely (in my estimation) to come with "us," rather than support "them." By the time most people are two, that "you're not the boss of me" thing manifests in nearly all humans.

Even in NYC, you got Staten Islanders, the people who live in Queens---
so I don't see dissolution as inevitable.

Jobs not mobs.

Captain Hate

I'm with rse; that was a complete slog. He's obviously correct about some things but never mentioned Article V as an anticipated means to correct how the country has strayed from the principles embodied in the Constitution. Also, the concept of the country not being sharply divided previously is an out and out fantasy, starting at the very beginning.

Captain Hate

Jim Renacci's eleventh hour MeToo garbage is indicative of what a terrible campaign he's run. Although I love that hoarse voiced goof having the tables turned on him, it's still a trash tactic and shouldn't be a substitute for pointing out how out of touch Brown is otherwise on MAGA issues that Ohio voted for two years ago.

The Ohio GOP deserves to be burned to the ground for squandering such a sterling opportunity and tanking a race that should have been a slam dunk.
