Jim Eagle

On October 21, 1805, off the coast of Spain, the fleet of the British Empire, under the command of Horatio Lord Admiral Nelson, engaged and decisively defeated a larger French and Spanish Navy.
Previously, Admiral Nelson had lost his right eye capturing Corsica and his right arm attacking the Canary Islands. He captured six and destroyed seven of Napoleon's ships at the Battle of the Nile and successfully assaulted Copenhagen. However, Admiral Nelson is best remembered (and immortalized) for winning one of the greatest naval battles in history, The Battle of Trafalgar. The daring 47-year-old Nelson defeated Napoleon's [age 36] combined French and Spanish fleets, consisting of 33 ships with 2,640 guns off the coast of Spain.
Napoleon received fifteen million dollars two years earlier from selling 600 million acres to the United States [Louisiana Purchase], but it was not enough to change the outcome. Admiral Nelson's defeat of the French navy abruptly ended Napoleon's power at sea, and with it, his dreams of world conquest. The 90,000 French troops assembled on the coast of France were forced to abandon their plans of crossing the English Channel and invading Britain.
During the Battle of Trafalgar, cannonade and musket shot ripped apart ships at point blank range, killing or wounding nearly ten thousand. Admiral Nelson was fatally shot in the spine. He was carried below deck to the ship's surgeon where he died. Admiral Horatio Nelson's last words were: "Thank God I have done my duty."

Trump says he'll pull US from nuclear agreement with Moscow

President Trump says he'll pull the U.S. out of its years-old Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) with Russia.

Trump says Moscow has violated the terms of the weapons pact, which dates to 1987, but he offered no further details on Saturday afternoon.

The pact helps protect the security of the U.S. and its allies in Europe and the Far East. It bars its signatories, the U.S. and Russia, from possessing, producing or test-flying a ground-launched cruise missile with a range of 300 to 3,400 miles.

Trump made the announcement following a campaign stop and Make America Great Again rally in Elko, Nevada.

National Security Adviser John Bolton was headed Saturday to Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. An administrative official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Fox News earlier this week that Bolton would be informing Moscow of the INF pullout during the trip.

“Across two administrations, the United States and our allies have attempted to bring Russia back into full and verifiable compliance with INF," said the source. "Despite our objections, Russia continues to produce and field prohibited cruise missiles and has ignored calls for transparency.”

Said Trump. "We are going to terminate the agreement and then we are going to develop the weapons" unless Russia and China agree to a new deal.

Holy Merde, Vols score against Bama. With the second string QB.

I personally find Knoxville to be a wholly unremarkable city. Reminiscent of Kansas City but with 50% less murders and 25% more strip malls.

That reminds me of one of my favorite poems: The Admiral's Ghost by Alfred Noyes.

Said Trump. "We are going to terminate the agreement and then we are going to develop the weapons" unless Russia and China agree to a new deal.

I love President Trump.

Good afternoon! As Jane mentioned, wow! It is hot here. Just an observation,I'm not complaining. :) We took a Jeep ride on Casey Key today and saw a few houses being built to hurricane specs. They are concrete bunkers, which aren't exactly cozy and comfy, but I guess they will withstand a hurricane.

Said Trump. "We are going to terminate the agreement and then we are going to develop the weapons" unless Russia and China agree to a new deal.

I love President Trump.

"Chelsea" got the surgery finally. Countdown to "accidental" overdose. I tell you nobody, but nobody, wants to watch Eddie Izzard age as woman. Trust me.

Well, Pin, it does have a river, a larger stadium than Vandy/Titans, and it doesn't have funky redneck music like Nashville.

I can live with that. Plus where my Mother's family originated after emigrating from Ireland.

But unfortunately, it also has the U of Tennessee, and there is no singing on Rocky Top. That is a given.

How was the cruise, James?

Trump hints at plan to fix 'both sides' of migrant caravan crisis

President Trump said Saturday that he had a plan to fix the immigration and humanitarian crisis on display in the migrant caravan headed for the U.S., but said he’s keeping it under wraps until after the election.

“We’re going to figure it out. I’ll be honest with you, I’ve already figured it out. You’re going to be happy. We’re going to make a lot of people happy,” said Mr. Trump.

He then added, “Think I’ll keep it a little bit low key until the election. I like where we stand in the election. You know, I think that blue wave is being rapidly shattered.”

Mr. Trump did not hint at how his plan would cause political waves.

He also did not back off his tough stance on border security, illegal immigration and reforms to legal immigration.

Saying he wants to complete a wall on the southern border in the next year, Mr. Trump warned that electing Democrats would usher in unchecked illegal immigration and lawlessness.

“The Democrats don’t care about what they’re extremist immigration will do to your communities, to your hospitals … and to your schools,” he said. “The Democrats don’t care that a flood of illegal immigration will bankrupt our country.”

Jim Eagle

If Trump doesn't pull all out the border patrol and military then he has lost me. You cannot allow a planned attack on our border and not respond with even deadly force. Someone has to lose here, and if it the USA, Trump has lost me.

I base a lot of my opinion on driving through Knoxville, which I find tedious. Several years ago my GPS told me to go downtown and cross that bridge which I assume goes by the stadium. It was closed for construction so I had to back a 48' trailer up but it was 2 AM so that worked out.

There are some really great places in East Tennessee that aren't cramped up city life trapped like a duck in a pen.

I like aspects of Nashville but I don't live there. I'm about 45 miles out. Frankly, I don't like going out that much. Ask my wife.

I like Nashville and the Grand Olde Opry.
Enjoyed a great fall day at Red Wagon Farm.

It is really no different than the attitude of Secretary of State James Mattis who said, “I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you f$*k with me, I’ll kill you all.”

Secretary of State James Mattis ??

Stuff like illegal substitution that make you a patsy for great teams like Bama. Its called coaching, discipline, and communications. With some teams it is a given they can't handle either of those 3.

Alabama should be in the NFL.

So Trump first threatened to deploy the military to protect the border. Now he says he has it all figured out but won't disclose his plan until after the election.

Is he backing off on the threat or are both statements valid?

Watch–Angry Customers Confront McConnell at Restaurant: ‘Why Don’t You Get Out of Here?’

The Senator from Kentucky was dining with his wife Elaine Chao, who serves as the current United States Secretary of Transportation, at Havana Rumba in Louisville.

McConnell was confronted by four men. One of the men yelled at McConnell, “Why don’t you get out of here? Why don’t you leave the entire country?”

Back in Kentucky.

Throughout the altercation, McConnell remained at his table. He thanked his supporters and shook their hands after the incident occurred.

Who'll be the first to get up out of their seats and fight back?

Wow, four in a row and it's not a new thread!

(Make that 5.)

Alabama's score is hard to differentiate from a basketball game.

((I think we need to do a repeat of the empty chair protest the weekend before election day, but instead of an empty chair, we all put up Trump/Republican signs in our yards and wear Trump gear - hats, shirts, etc.))

I'm with ya Stephanie! I wear my Deplorables stuff all the time, but I am more chicken about wearing straight up Trump shirts & the MAGA cap.

Tom Jones and The Cardigans-Burning Down the House

Beasts of England

I forgot to post this yesterday and it's interesting: every election since 1954 that the Republicans have added to their Senate majority, they've also added seats in the House. There are no exceptions found in that 64 year data set.

I researched this because a friend asked me why some feel so confident about gaining several Senate seats, yet fret about losing the House. The above correlation isn't determinative of causation, natch, as the nature of the intrastate voting subsets and individual candidates are different. However, some recent elections have become even more of a national policy referendum than strictly state and district contests.

Caveat: I haven't gone back through the historic races to determine if the Reps picked up Senate and/or House seats because their Dem opponents made unforced errors like they're making this cycle. That may seem like a nit, but there could be a common causal attribute that I don't have time to investigate. Although I kinda doubt it... (Is that hedged enough?)

Nonetheless, if you're looking for some Xanax data to calm your electoral anxiety, it's a decent point of departure.

All the signs near me are MAGA already.

57 authors...
I thought that meant one author from each state.

Jack is Back! (On the iPad in Bed)

We have a very prominent guy here in Southampton who is unabashedly pro- Trump. One of the reallynice houses on South Main Street. Had a huge Trump MAGA banner flying over the front of his house. Now a huge Zeldin sign. Like my neighbor says, “George doesn’t give a shit”, words to live by I this day and age.

I am more chicken about wearing straight up Trump shirts & the MAGA cap.

I've been carrying a Glock 43 lately, and even I wouldn't. It's going to get violent, I have no doubt, and you don't want to be there when it does.

I think Hugh Laurie was remarkably good rolling the blues!

Thanks, Jack, re Trafalgar (I teach about it in detail when I do Persuasion) and for that marvelous poem, Miss Marple--who would have thunk that Nelson was really just the ghost of Drake? My students read "Casabianca," too, not a great poem by a long shot but a real rouser, and then they learn (a little) about the Battle of the Nile.

Did someone already post this for The Rut?

Catsmeat, we saw Hugh Laurie in a small theater at Turning Stone. Well done show. He plays a mean piano and was accompanied by very talented musicians. Worthwhile.

Additional emails show that Sinema “was behind a protest to free José Padilla, also known as Muhajir Abdullah, who was convicted in federal court of aiding terrorists. Padilla was arrested in Chicago on May 8, 2002, on suspicion of plotting a radiological bomb attack.”

Did al-Turki lose the spot when MBS got elevated? Talal's losses are peanuts compared to that.

Bernardi Dr la paz

She's quite a piece of work, isn't she Padilla aka Abdullah muhajir worked with first a Trinidadian saudi, who had communications with atta.

Bernardi Dr la paz

Well he was nephew to the king that was killed but he was pretty far down on the succession rolls.

Used to play softball regularly with a crew of friends that included Tony Bennet's sons Danny and Dae in my late teens, early twenties.

One of the sons took over managing his father's career. That's when Tony's carer re-bloomed. The kid did a really good job. Turned Tony red-hot. Look at how many singers want to duets with him.

I was tailgating at the I.U. vs Penn State game today. The game was another 'dollar short and day late' kinda thing.

I was hanging in Fess Fields with the Sorority Dads.

The wind was blowing crazy. Crazy enough that a huge branch fell outta a tree 25 feet away from us and an entire huge tree 50 yards away. It sounded like a bomb going off and produced a moment of near pandemonium.

That tree fell right over Forest Ave. Probably 3.5 feet thick. 25 minutes later security show up and put up a sign that said 'Road Closed'.

A great cry in unison went up that said 'No shit!'

I had a great time but, I gotta admit, I was on edge most of the day!

Catsmeat ,

I don't know when I first ran across that poem, but I have known it for years. Noyes also wrote the poem "The Highwayman", which was in my high school freshman lit book.

Because Nelson was a favorite of mine from English history, it has always remained in my memory.

News from the Art World -- The virtue signal is strong with them: Met and Brooklyn Museums Will Not Use Saudi Money for Programs on the Middle East. Not that it would cost them much, even if they actually planned to return it to the source — which they don't!:

The museum said it had accepted less than $20,000 for the event, which is to take place on Tuesday. The Met still has the money, and is deciding what to do with it now that it will not be used for the seminar.
So, these ethical giants will be substituting Met money for Saudi funds this month, and then, at some more auspicious moment in the future, substitute the Saudi money for Met dollars. We've got your circular logic, right here, except for the logic part.

Moar from KJART:

American actress, Gigi Bermingham, sets sails for Europe to interview her dramatic counterparts in France & the UK. She concludes (emphasis mine):

Certainly American culture is different from European culture. So I had expected the life of a theatre artist in Paris or London to be more refined, somehow easier, and at the same time more gratifying on a creative level than mine here in the States. But it turns out that their struggles, passions, fiscal concerns, their training, their identity issues, and the sexism they face—in other words, much of their life experience, seems very similar to my own. For better or for worse, the actor’s path, whether here or in Europe, is where I can always find a fellow traveler.
Good grief, this is no teenage ingenue we're talking about. The woman is 61 years old!

Team Mueller apparently can't even come up a process crime to justify indicting the Russian for, well, nothing, as it turns out. This is even more pathetic than I thought it would be, back when everybody realized that they never actually expected the Russians to show up in the first place.
