Has anyone seen an objective analysis that explains why the Saudis would want to assassinate Khashoggi? There have been plenty of critics of MBS' reforms, which have reduced the power and wealth of the Saudi royals allied with the DC Establishment. What makes Khashoggi so important? Why kill someone like him in such an unprofessional manner that blatantly implicates you?

I've been following this story, since the daughter is applying to U-M among many schools: The prof directly violated university policy by acting on BDS against a student seeking a reference for study in Israel.

The punishments against Cheney-Lippold include a stern warning, ineligibility for a merit increase for the 2018-19 academic year, in addition to being ineligible to take an accredited sabbatical until the fall 2020 semester.

Mainly below the fold, but it is absolutely amazing that those two astronauts escaped the failed launch yesterday. I am going to guess that the media are colluding with Putin. covering up for his soviet era technology.

Actually, Pop the rocket scientist use to say that it was amazing that we ever got the Saturns up in the air. Millions of parts, all built by the lowest bidder.

He said that the systems and the math were so complex that a single failure anywhere along the way could cause failure. It was a tremendous achievement that we only lost three astronauts in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs.

Indiana GOP Files Ethics Complaint Against Joe Donnelly

The Indiana Republican Party has filed a complaint to the Senate ethics committee against Sen. Joe Donnelly (D., Ind.) for his "improper and illegal use of official resources for campaign purposes," pointing to use of photos taken by his official office in his latest campaign ad.

The complaint, filed on Wednesday, is in regards to a photo of Donnelly's February 2017 meeting with then-Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch that was taken by his Senate office and posted to the internet. The photo appeared in the Donnelly campaign's latest ad, which points to Donnelly's vote for Gorsuch.

"Today, I am filing a formal complaint with the Senate Ethics Committee to investigate Senator Donnelly's flagrant abuse of taxpayer dollars in a desperate bid to get re-elected," said party chairman Kyle Hupfer. "In the meantime, Donnelly's campaign must immediately cease running this ad and issue a public apology to Hoosier taxpayers."

Donnelly's office has previously denied that it was posting materials from his meetings with Supreme Court nominees online for the purpose of making them available to the campaign and other election groups, acknowledging it would be "illegal" to do so.

maryrose, yes, it appears a passport is acceptable voter ID in Texas. As is a Texas handgun license. :)

Apparently Holder doesn't like that you can use a handgun license (which has address and DOB as well as a photo and an expiration date) but not a UT student ID which only has name and photo.

https://www.votetexas.gov/register-to-vote/need-id.html

Based on that list, if a UT student doesn't have either a passport or driver's license, he/she is likely to be SOL. And many of their passports are going to be back at home with their parents and may not be obtainable in time to vote.

SUSAN RICE’S SON PRESSES ‘FULL CHARGES’ AGAINST STANFORD STUDENT WHO ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTED HIM AT PRO-KAVANAUGH EVENT

A pro-Trump College Republicans president is pressing “full charges” against a Stanford University student for allegedly assaulting him at an event Tuesday supporting Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

John David Rice-Cameron, the son of Obama-era national security adviser Susan Rice, claims that sophomore Melinda Hernandez physically assaulted him.

“She got in my face and proceeded to hit me in the chest area and push me back forcefully,” Rice-Cameron said, The Stanford Daily reported Wednesday.

Hernandez was placed under a private person arrest and issued a battery citation, Stanford Department of Public Safety spokesperson Bill Larson said, according to The Stanford Daily. The District Attorney’s Office is looking into the incident for further review, though there were no reported injuries to all parties involved.

Hernandez said she touched Rice-Cameron on the chest when he would not stop filming the encounter without her consent.

“Those who know my character, from a distance or up close, know my fight in social justice lies in peace,” Hernandez wrote in a Facebook post, according to The Stanford Daily.

jimmyk

Agree with CH on the Fed. But I'm not aware of any talk of 'getting rid of the Fed.' At most just putting it under tighter scrutiny. In an imaginary scenario of getting rid of it (not an altogether bad idea in theory), they would have to have a completely worked-out system (e.g. gold standard, fixed exchange rates, etc.) to replace it. We have gotten rid of two central banks in the (distant) past, but CH is correct that the world is different now, and would freak out without a good plan ready to go.

A better plan in the near term is to alter the Fed's mandate to narrow its focus to price stability (as opposed to price stability and full employment, the latter giving them free rein for all sorts of mischief like QEn, n=1,2,3,...).

Extraneus

Interesting, from the previous link:

The event was held in a free speech area of campus, according to The Stanford Daily.

The students could record video in the public space, according to Jim Wheaton, senior counsel at the First Amendment Project. Audio, however, had more restrictions under California law.

“Recording a conversation — even [one] in a public space — is a violation of law in California,” Wheaton said to The Stanford Daily.

California’s policy requires all parties must provide consent to be recorded, according to the Digital Media Law Project (DMLP).
