What prompted my comment was a story at Bloomberg about how close the death of coal is and one at Judith Curry's wherein she and Willi Eschenbach both note that contra the IPCC, a 1.5C increase in temps won't be disastrous because we've already risen 2C since 1820 according to the IPCC's own graphs and stats and the evidence is whatever rise occurred has been wholly beneficial.
And yet these prog fanatics pursue lunatic big government retardations that will destroy trillions in wealth and, here's the kicker, condemn millions of the world's poorest citizens to death or lifelong, unnecessary grinding poverty.

I'll see your Agnus Dei, and raise you Mozart's version, from my one of my all time favorites, his Mass in C minor. FYI, I have just learned from Wikipedia's own sucky search function that there is no Mozart C minor Mass, there is only the "Great Mass in C minor, K. 427" because that's the title of the page. It seems it was only incidentally composed by Mozart.

Fans of Barber's Adagio for Strings (which has an interesting history) will recognize his Agnus Dei. I was interested to learn that when he arranged the choral version (with optional accompaniment, which the performance above does not include), he actually changed the orchestral version very little. The fact that it translated so easily from instruments to voice surely says something about his musical vision (for lack of a better word), although I'm not sure what, perhaps something to do with a melodic temperament?

I loved your Psalm 104 (and have an early chromo-lithographed accordion book illustrating same). When it comes to putting Psalms to music, though, I'm in the process of rediscovering Vivaldi.

Not sure what a guy smoking in a bar or making snow angels has to do with his "Cum dederit" from Psalm 127 (Yes I know that's a link to Handel), but there's something a bit gay about the joyful guy in a tub at the end. There are more ethereal versions floating around, but this one's got period instruments.

Here is Philippe Jaroussky's much finer voice in Vivaldi's lovely Filiae Maestae Jerusalem. per Wikipedia, "This text concerns sad daughters of Jerusalem after the death of Jesus Christ and the mourning of nature itself." If you open that last link in Chrome, Google will offer to translate it for you, which will allow you to make a certain marginal sense of the Latin.

And since it seems to be counter-tenor night chez moi, one last little non-biblical gem. Aside from the beautiful music and the wonderful voice, I'm not sure what I like best here: the setting, the flip-flops and shorts or the score on an iPad! Vivaldi's Vedro con mio diletto from Il Giustino.

One of my favorite things about classical music on YouTube is that, while it's not the best way to listen, it makes it easy to compare multiple interpretations of the same piece. There's something appealing in this romanticized iteration of Vivaldi's Concerto for violin in E minor RV 273 with period instruments, although this presumably more traditional rendering, with an orchestra, is a better recording with better and/or better conducted musicians. It's also almost 2 minutes faster, which is a big difference in a piece this short. The search for the "perfect" (my truth!) version continues on...

You might prefer the way Jaroussky sings Cum Dederit. Truth be told, I do myself. There are also versions which feature a soprano, but so far, I don't think women's voices fit the music nearly as well.

JMH, thanks for those musical links. Never knew there was a choral version of the Barber. The Mozart is one of my faves too, incredibly powerful. But if I can nitpick: It's not "Agnus Dei," it's "Kyrie Eleison." The Youtube is mislabeled. In fact according to that wiki, Mozart never got around to composing the "Agnus Dei" for that Mass. I remember reading a bio of Mozart that pointed out that whenever he dedicated a piece to his wife he wasn't able to finish it. For what it's worth.

Porchlight, thanks for leeks recipe suggestions on the previous thread. I plan to try the braised leeks with thyme as soon as I get some thyme.

I got leeks by accident. I intended to buy scallions. I bought this bunch that looked like scallions. I knew something was amiss when I tried to eat one of the green stalks a month later. Then I read the label. I also learned I should have spread them out rather than planted in clumps. Live and learn. Next Spring I will try leeks again and follow the planting instructions.

I also make leeks stock yesterday that looks promising. Put the greens in a stock pot with some water, bring to boil, and simmer for 3 hours. Whatever dirt survived the washing hopefully got sterilized while simmering. I"m looking forward to trying next time I need to reanimate some rice or millet.

Review of the 60 Minute interview:

President Trump looked very confident. Stahl made lame attempts to trip him up which he spotted, which caused her to double down. He did not get into an argument with her but did spar, which I don't think she expected.

The worst visual was her voice over with the shots of Hurricane Michael blowing, followed by her listing all of the hurricanes and asking him if he now believes in climate change! I cannot reproduce all of her ridiculous assertions but they included that we have been having more severe hurricanes which he disputed and said there have been worse ones in the past (which is true) and that his own scientists all agree, which he also disputed and pointed out scientists have political agendas, too. She seemed stunned by that statement.

Also,,introducing a segment in which she wanted him to PLEDGE not to fire Mueller ( which he answered by saying he didn't pledge things) her voiceover listed all of the indictments without once mentioning that none of them had to do with Russian collusion.

His description of Washington as a poisonousl, backstabbing place was heartfelt and striking. He also says he still doesn't trust everyone who works in the White House, but I don't think he meant people,like Kelly, but rather the low-level,people.

The best part was when she asked him something and he answered "Because I'm President and you're not."

I will be interested to see if he has a comment on Twitter about the heavy editing, which was obvious when you watched.

The mayor has been accused of taking a kid-gloved approach to the protests that routinely roil the liberal enclave, such as the summer occupation of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement building, which saw Portland police refuse to assist the immigration-enforcement officers unless they were in physical danger.

“This is the kind of street anarchy that routinely happens where I live,” tweeted Mr. Ngo.

More rioting broke out Saturday night as antifa activists brawled with protesters who turned out for a “flash march for law and order,” organized Patriot Prayer, a right-wing group.

Portland police made no arrests during the bloody melee, even though “officers observed people in possession of hard-knuckled gloves, firearms, batons and knives. Officers also observed people use pepper spray,” according to a department statement.

“Officers responded to the scene and used less lethal munitions to break up the fight and prevent further violence,” said Portland Police Bureau Chief Danielle Outlaw. “We will continue to investigate this incident and ask that anyone who was the victim of a crime to come forward and file a report.”

According to TV station KGW, four people received medical attention, but authorities did not know whether anyone was hospitalized.

The video posted by journalist Andy C. Ngo showed protesters, including members of antifa and Black Lives Matter, blocking an intersection and attempting to direct traffic at while officers on motorcycle watched from a block away.

At one point, the activists chased down 74-year-old Kent Houser after he made a right turn against their wishes, pounding on his silver Lexus and breaking a window. The car sustained thousands of dollars in damage, he told the Oregonian.

Even so, Mr. Wheeler (Mayor of Portland) insisted that “motorists should feel completely safe coming into downtown Portland.”
