The rolling wave of resistance to unfettered immigration finally takes down Angela Merkel. One might think, after Brexit, Trump, Macron, Sweden, eastern Europe and Merkel that the folks in favor of open borders would dial up better arguments than "Stop hating, you hate-filled hater". But maybe not.
MORE: Andrew Sullivan swings to starboard on this one:
Democrats Can’t Keep Dodging Immigration As a Real Issue
It’s the optics that are fatal. The image of that caravan, crammed with thousands of desperate brown human beings, winding its way tortuously through Central America and Mexico, headed to a showdown at the U.S. border, is a white nationalist’s twisted fantasy. The question is not if George Soros funded it, but if Steve Bannon did (I’m kidding, I’m kidding). It reminds me of that infamous poster in the Brexit campaign which showed a long, packed line of migrants, in theory waiting to enter Britain, with the slogan: “Breaking Point.”
...
I get all that. I’m an immigrant myself. But it doesn’t answer a simple question. What do we do when the caravan gets here? And more saliently: What do we do if many more caravans show up behind it? This is not an abstract question. It’s a pressing, practical, and in some ways existential one. It cuts to the core of whether the United States has to choose between being inhumane to the point of betraying some core moral principles and remaining a sovereign nation in control of who joins its population.
He does slide past a key point when he writes this:
The United States has long been a miraculous machine for immigrant assimilation. Which is why it’s easy to dismiss the appeal of anti-immigrant sentiment as nativist racism, waxing as it periodically does in America.
Well, yes. There was an anti-immigrant backlash in the 1910-1920s, when the non-native born population was around 15%. Today? Projected to reach 14% by 2020.
There is a manageable pace of integration and change but we are moving well into a zone that has in the past led to significant social tension. (I'm thinking Japanese internment as I write ). Lots of history of immigration and the changing laws in the LA Times. And every picture tells a story.
Help me TM. You’re my last resort. You have blocked me, and I’m pretty sure you didn’t intend to. (I’m sending this from my phone)

This complaint by Dems about Hillary getting more votes (popular) than Trump tells you all you need to know about their commitment to the US Constitution. If it was up to them they would 86 it in a nano-second,and establish something that would make Tito, Lenin, Mao and Hugo Chavez proud.

Buford,
The smart tech guys here are Dave, Captain, Henry, and maybe Rick and one of the Jim's. Hopefully they'll show up soon.
Many if not all of us have had posting and site problems over the last week. Miss Marple and I kept getting 403 Forbidden messages when we tried to open JOM. That went away for me after 3 hours dealing with Apple MacBook tech guys and rebooting stuff and cleansing tons of junk, but that may have been coincidence since i think Captain and Henry think that was a fault on Typepads side of the equation.
I use 2 browsers, Firefox and Safari, and Firefox seems to be working better with JOM now than Safari. You might try using a different browser.
Also, if you keep getting that 403 Forbidden message when trying to access JOM, scroll thru your history back to before you were clobbered and open that JOM window, then simply update to the current thread. That worked for me as a quick fix to gain access. Wish I could offer you a real fix. Good luck.

My guess is that B Gooch is currently on an IP address I blocked a while ago.
Unfortunately IDK which one to unblock. However! Tech jockeys should chime in, but my guess is that restarting the computer *might* jog a new IP address out of the Internet Service provider.
Plan B would be to restart the modem - that, I am pretty sure, will lead to a new IP address being assigned.
Plan C would be to have someone DM me the IP address, I guess. Or email.

Been around before but a good reminder for the election:
"Sarah was in the fertilized egg business. She had several hundred young pullets and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs. She kept records and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced.
This took a lot of time, so she bought some tiny bells and attached them to her roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so she could tell from a distance which rooster was performing. Now, she could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells.
Sarah's favorite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but this morning she noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! When she went to investigate, she saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets hearing the roosters coming, would run for cover.
To Sarah's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job, and walk on to the next one.
Sarah was so proud of old Butch, she entered him in a Show and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result was the judges not only awarded old Butch the "No Bell Peace Prize" they also awarded him the "Pulletsurprise" as well.
Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making. Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the unsuspecting populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention?
Vote carefully in the next election. You can't always hear the bells."

Very little politics, not much about climate change and the author seems bewildered by but not completely dismissive of this thing the natives refer to as God. The one problem with registration is when Typepad breaks access to the site for the registered like they did last week. As long as it's easy to toggle on and off it would be ok, I guess.
TM -- when everyone with a registered login was locked out and they were using JOM without login, were you still able to control the site with your login? Because if registration means the possibility that you could be locked out of your site for any significant period of time, then that kinda gives you pause...

With the first snow falling across the Anchorage area Monday morning, slick roads are creating hazardous conditions for driving.
By midmorning, Anchorage police had responded to 18 collisions, and 34 cars had skidded into ditches since midnight, said APD spokesman MJ Thim. Three people had minor injuries...
Those numbers aren't as high as usual for the first snow event of the season, Thim said.

In front of me is a copy of Life magazine, dated June 20, 1969. On the cover: Joe Namath. A feature story inside: images from Apollo 10's dress rehearsal flight to the moon; the Apollo 11 landing still a month off; Woodstock, two months away as well. And in an article about 'the future'- 'the Class of 1969' is a piece w/photo quilled by one Hillary Rodham.
Broadway Joe's long retired; two of the Apollo 10 astronauts have died; Neil Armstrong is dead as well and the many of the musicians who made Woodstock rock are gone, too-- and the groovy kids who freely loved in the rain are approaching their 70's now.
Yet the rancid stench of late 60s/early 70s feminism from that ancient Hillary Rodham still stinks up our politics.

It looked like we were going to get a recovery rally on Wall Street, but a 350 point gain for the DOW turned into a 550 point loss at one point, before settling down about 250 points down at the close. Most of the turnaround was because of a report that the US was preparing more tariffs against China if talks next month between President Trump and President Xi fail to reach some sortof agreement.

For Stephanie when she shows up:)
A British man wakes up in the hospital bandaged from head to foot.
The doctor comes in and says,
"Ah, I see you've regained consciousness.
Now you probably won't remember,
but you were in a huge pile-up on the motorway.
You're going to be ok, you'll walk again and everything, but...
your penis was severed in the accident &... we couldn't find it.
The man groans, but the doctor goes on,
"You've got £9000 in insurance compensation coming
and we now have the technology to build a new penis.
" They work great but they don't come cheap. It's £1000 an inch."
The man perks up. "So," the doctor says,
"you must decide how many inches you want.
But this is something you should discuss with your wife.
If you had five inches before & get nine inches now she might be a bit put out.
If you had nine inches before & you decide to only invest in five inches now,
she might be disappointed.
It's important that she plays a role in helping you make a decision.
The man agrees to talk it over with his wife.
The doctor comes back the next day, "So, have you spoken with your wife?"
Yes I have," says the man.
"And has she helped you make a decision?"
Yes" says the man.
What is your decision?" asks the doctor.

I've seen a few Jimmy come lately Renacci signs. I'm not getting my hopes high but if the Restraining Order lost that would be the most MAGA thing yet.

I guess our host has more capability to control things @JOM than I ever thought possible. Which means that the lengths to which the oily discharge goes to spew his mental mucus in here is an even more pathetic waste than I thought. Why doesn't it just take up playing candy crush?

Is it possible to get disquis for this site? In which case you could easily control posting. OTOH who cares really? I just scroll on by..most of you have killfile installed. I consider this lovely place a public speakers' box and such things always draw some deranged hecklers.

Porchlight,
You're in Texas. Why are you interested in Michigan rallies?

Dave, he's mentally ill. That's not a joke, it's a fact. He nearly 70 years old and he hate EVERYTHING that isn't FULL COMMIE.
Yet he tries to pretend he's on a higher moral plane. He even used Benghazi and Abortion in his twisted illness.

You're in Texas. Why are you interested in Michigan rallies?
Because I've been expecting/assuming he would campaign for John James, since he's campaigned in all the other Trump states with Dem Senate incumbents.
Granted, James is further behind than others, but I want him to campaign for everyone. Especially since he just spoke to the black conservatives in DC. It's really important to his message to support James, IMO.

I'm fine with registration, but hopefully not until Typepad starts letting me sign in again! I'm still having to fill in my name/email/URL each time I post a comment, because the info won't stick.
Are people able to sign in on their iPads? If so I may try that. I've got a bluetooth keyboard I can probably pair with it to help with the typing.

of that upper set in the defense pic, only Germany and Italy are in the top 15 of total defense expenditures. US and Communist China are 1-2, while Russia comes up 4th (distant).

JMH, my sign in is ignored by Typepad on the 4 devices I’ve attempted this past week.

Are there any humanoids working at Typepad who can discuss these glitches?

Here's a link to last night's excellent Life, Liberty, and Levin, where Mark had on Newt Gingrich.
Gingrich had a funny but sarcastic comment about John Kerry which started after a discussion, about the 24 minute mark, where the 2 men discuss attacks on Trump's statement that he is a "Nationalist" and Newt brings in a bit of excellent Ben Franklin history by explanation, before quipping the following to Levin's amusement:
Newt: ...Trump is basically saying "Look, these guys on the Left want to sell our country out for some kind of Global Cause, whether its the Paris Accords, or the International Criminal Court, or the United Nations." You know I tell people the reason John Kerry runs all over the world the way he does and the reason he still sees the Iranians, is that in Kerry's mind he was never really the American Secretary of State. He was a World Secretary of State, doing good things on behalf of the World, which is why I don't think you could charge him with The Logan Act, because you'd have to be an American in order to be charged with The Logan Act and Kerry's not psychologically an American. He's psychologically a "person of the Globe," and with regard to people who care about America as sort of pygmies, obsolete.

My name is stickied on each page. Once we move to a new page, I have to type in my name and email again.
It's interesting how the problems are randomly distributed.
