At a rally in Ohio Trump talked up U.S. Grant, son of Ohio. Chaos ensued!
The CNN transcription:
Here's what Trump told the crowd in Ohio:
"It also gave you a general who was incredible. He drank a little bit too much. You know who I’m talking about right? So Robert E. Lee was a great general. And Abraham Lincoln developed a phobia. He couldn’t beat Robert E. Lee.
He was going crazy. I don’t know if you know this story. But Robert E. Lee was winning battle after battle after battle. And Abraham Lincoln came home, he said, 'I can’t beat Robert E. Lee.' And he had all of his generals, they looked great, they were the top of their class at West Point. They were the greatest people. There’s only one problem — they didn’t know how the hell to win. They didn’t know how to fight. They didn’t know how.
And one day, it was looking really bad. And Lincoln just said, 'You,' hardly knew his name. And they said, 'Don’t take him, he’s got a drinking problem.' And Lincoln said, 'I don’t care what problem he has. You guys aren’t winning.'
And his name was Grant. General Grant. And he went in and he knocked the hell out of everyone. And you know the story. They said to Lincoln, 'You can’t use him anymore, he’s an alcoholic.' And Lincoln said, 'I don’t care if he’s an alcoholic, frankly, give me six or seven more just like him.' He started to win. Grant really did — he had a serious problem, a serious drinking problem, but man was he a good general. And he’s finally being recognized as a great general.
But Lincoln had almost developed a phobia, because he was having a hard time with a true great fighter, a great general Robert E. Lee. But Grant figured it out. And Grant is a great general, and Grant came from right here."
Now, don't call it Fake News but on Twitter NBC News managed to distill that down to this:
WATCH: President Trump says "Robert E. Lee was a great general" during Ohio rally, calling the Confederate leader "incredible."
Trump called Grant incredible, but he could have said the same about this reporting.
The SPLC swooned because Gen. Lee fought for the slave-holding South:
Robert E. Lee was not a great general, President Trump. He waged a war to hold onto the legal institution of white supremacy.
Uh huh. Rommel was not a great general either since he fought for Hitler. Historians need to search their thesauri carefully.
Lots of cross-currents here.
Something everyone should understand about the Mueller appointment

And you know that Steyer was paying off a whole passel of Indonesian officials in his coal operations.

narciso,
Here is my problem with this story. Right in the middle of all of this stuff going on in DC, and right before the midterms, why would the Saudis, who NEED us, risk doing something so ham-handed and risk the balance of power?
If they had really wanted to off this guy, it shouldn't have been hard to track him down in DC and shoot him in the back of the head like Seth Rich. It would have been easy to explain as a robbery gone wrong.
Why do it at an embassy, with 15 security guys and then chop up the body? This makes no sense. Zero.
The guy who wrote the column earlier that you posted was describing the different ways the Saudis tried to lure him home, but no one grabbed him off the street and I note he is still alive.

Truth to tell, Robert E. Lee was a very good--but not a great--general. John Keegan, the eminent British military historian said that Robert E.Lee would have been a very competent corps commander among the European generals of the day. He was great at defense--not so much on offense.
Stonewall Jackson came close to greatness, but he had a significant failing as a general. He was very close mouthed--did not tell his subordinates of the details of his plans and strategy until the very last moment--if then. That limited the size of a military unit that he could competently command.
William Tecumseh Sherman was probably the best general of the Civil War--but folks thought he was crazy (in part because he told a newspaper reporter early in the war what it would take to win the war--and the reporter thought that Sherman's view was preposterous). Sherman's estimate of what it would take was ultimately proved correct. Grant saved Sherman.
Grant was a fighter--and a butcher. As a general, he was probably slightly superior to Lee. But the key to Grant was his stubbornness and his willingness to fight as hard as he could with whatever resources he had to hand.
As for CNN and their reporters--they are a bunch of clueless, ignorant shmucks on any number of subjects--including military history.

Question
August 1, 1960
Mr. Dwight D. Eisenhower
White House
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. President:
At the Republication Convention I heard you mention that you have the pictures of four (4) great Americans in your office, and that included in these is a picture of Robert E. Lee.
I do not understand how any American can include Robert E. Lee as a person to be emulated, and why the President of the United States of America should do so is certainly beyond me.
The most outstanding thing that Robert E. Lee did, was to devote his best efforts to the destruction of the United States Government, and I am sure that you do not say that a person who tries to destroy our Government is worthy of being held as one of our heroes.
Will you please tell me just why you hold him in such high esteem?
Sincerely yours,
Leon W. Scott
August 9, 1960
Answer
Dear Dr. Scott:
Respecting your August 1 inquiry calling attention to my often expressed admiration for General Robert E. Lee, I would say, first, that we need to understand that at the time of the War between the States the issue of secession had remained unresolved for more than 70 years. Men of probity, character, public standing and unquestioned loyalty, both North and South, had disagreed over this issue as a matter of principle from the day our Constitution was adopted.
General Robert E. Lee was, in my estimation, one of the supremely gifted men produced by our Nation. He believed unswervingly in the Constitutional validity of his cause which until 1865 was still an arguable question in America; he was a poised and inspiring leader, true to the high trust reposed in him by millions of his fellow citizens; he was thoughtful yet demanding of his officers and men, forbearing with captured enemies but ingenious, unrelenting and personally courageous in battle, and never disheartened by a reverse or obstacle. Through all his many trials, he remained selfless almost to a fault and unfailing in his faith in God. Taken altogether, he was noble as a leader and as a man, and unsullied as I read the pages of our history.
From deep conviction, I simply say this: a nation of men of Lee’s calibre would be unconquerable in spirit and soul. Indeed, to the degree that present-day American youth will strive to emulate his rare qualities, including his devotion to this land as revealed in his painstaking efforts to help heal the Nation’s wounds once the bitter struggle was over, we, in our own time of danger in a divided world, will be strengthened and our love of freedom sustained.
Such are the reasons that I proudly display the picture of this great American on my office wall.
Sincerely,
Dwight D. Eisenhower

I thnk we should pay attention to how peopl can change, due to maybe having their spines stiffened and knowing they have a president who will go to the mat for them.
Who would have thought Susan Collins would rise to the level of statesmanship? Who would have thought that Orrin Hatch and Chuck Grassley could shoot out devastating tweets against the democrats? Those guys are in their 80's, too!
Graham was quite a firecracker when he was one of the impeachment managers. I wonder if the Clinton's have been harassing him for the last 10 years. It might explain his alliance with McCain.

My position is that all the good qualities that Susan Collins , Orrin Hatch and Lindsey Graham have shown have always been a part of who they are and what they hope to accomplish.
I do not subscribe to the meme stated here many times that President Trump is behind their behavior or that he provides them with their spine.
The first time they do something people on this blog don’t agree with all the usual complaining will commence.Theimportant thing to remember in my mind is that all of the Republicans with the exception of McCain and Murkowski voted for this Presidrnt’s agenda.
They were Republicans long before President Trump came on the scene and they will continue to be when his two terms end.

I'm extremely grateful that McCain wasn't around to screw up the Kavanaugh confirmation because I'm sure he would have given it every effort, as would his widow had she been given that seat which thank God she wasn't.

Maryrose,
Once again you give no credit to President Trump while ascribing facts not in evidence as far as Collins and Graham are concerned. I was even complimentary to them, too!
For at least ten years Lindsey Graham has been following John McCain like some sort of mascot. Everyone on this site knows it, so don't be trying to tell me he has always stood up to the press the way he has the last couple of weeks!
I assume, living in Ohio, that you are unable to recognize leadership due to the abscence of such for 8 years. Let me tell you this: I am unwilling to go back to the old way the GOP has been run, with everyone tip-toeing around in case the press gets angry. After the Kavanaugh hearings, it is obvious they will attack saints as well as sinners, even if they have to make up stories.
The democrats expected that Trump would operate like a Bush type and withdraw the nomination. He did not, and fought through to victory. That is a big deal to a lot of people not only in DC but around the nation.
Posted by: Miss Marple | October 13, 2018 at 04:25 PM
maryrose,
When I started watching, with about four minutes to go, Nebraska was up by 10. Northwestern had the ball and passed up about a 40 yard field goal attempt on fourth and 10 because the kicker isn't very good. They converted and eventually kicked a field goal of about 15 yards.
So they were down by a touchdown with about two and a half minutes and all three timeouts. Then the Northwestern coach, like a complete idiot, tried an onside kick which Nebraska easily covered. The defense, which the coach didn't trust, held and Nebraska punted to the one yard line with just over two minutes to go.
Then Northwestern drove the length of the field in a not particularly intelligent drive and scored the tying touchdown with 12 seconds to go. Nebraska turned it over in OT and Northwestern won.

Should be New.

When I saw Nebraska up by 10 I switched to the Notre Dame game.
I would have loved to see the end of that game.

I suppose Alvin disagreed with som legal strategy or principle. I don't know enough about those things to comment intelligently.
Correct, he said Graham ignored some of the more compelling charges and stressed relatively meaningless ones. Imo it didn't matter because you were never gonna get the circle the wagon donks to turn on Slick and risk dealing with the Arkancide mafia.
Steph's dawgs have dug themselves a hole.

I always give credit to President Trump for fulfilling his promises.

If you don't think the Antifa, terrorizing anarchists aren't begging for a war, you haven't been paying attention.
I don't think Antifa wants anything to do with pissing off The Proud Boys.

I once had dinner with a friend in the club. If it had been on the UWS, they would have blown it up.

Captain:
My sister always reminds me of the party they had at the WH when they knew the Senate wouldn’t convict Clinton.
I remember his words about staying until the very last hour of his presidency.
Just think it had been 18 years since he had any kind of power.

McConnell prevented Garland from a vote before President Trump won the presidency.

maryrose,
Mr. Morris came from Sayville, Long Island, about 45 minutes west of here. He used to bike back to his hometown on a regular basis. My great-grandfather, who was his contemporary, would bike on Sunday's out to Montauk, over 30 miles one way. He and my grandfather were original members of The American Wheelmen. At one time we held the sole franchise rights for Raleigh Bicycles.
The Museum is where I had my exhibit in 2008. If you click on my LUN, it will take you to my Museum website and there is a full page of the exhibit.

Will see Mike DeWine, Republican candidate for governor tomorrow at a Pancake breakfast.
Last Thursday I attended a meeting of the Westshore Republican club in support of our candidate for President of Cleveland city council.

“By putting all your focus on one person handicaps the future because after his 2 terms who takes his place?”
It’s not putting the focus on one person, it’s on one strategy, fighting, which Trump exemplifies, and others like Romney, who raised the white flag, and McCain, who would fight against fellow Republicans more than for them, do not.

,
Did you miss the part where I said Graham had been a firecracker during impeachment?
This is what I mean about you ignoring the positive things I say about Republicans other than President Trump.
As far as my concentrating on President Trump and not thinking about what will happen after he leaves office, I hope his strategies and willingness to ignore the press and lobbyists sets an example for those who follow. We need more people like President Trump, not a move back to the old ways.

Jimmyk:
No one knows at this juncture how Romney will behave as a senator should he win in Itsh.
We have to wait and see.
Recent speculation is that Obama and company spied on the Romney campaign in 2012.Also there was voter fraud in Florida.
Yes Trump fights.
But others do as well.
Meadows, Nunes and Jordan as well as Scalise come to mind.

maryrose,
I would've gladly volunteered to evict those grifters.

McConnell prevented Garland from a vote before President Trump won the presidency.
I agree this was huge, but I also think it's Trump who's stiffening their spines. Teaching them how to win, as it were.

There are plenty of people like President Trump.
I just believe they are that way on their own without his help.
He sets a good example but they are their own person.
Posted by: maryrose | October 13, 2018 at 05:26 PM
If the Rs gain 5 or 6 seats, I think Romney will fall in line and be solid. If it's 51-49 or close, he'll be a wildcard.

Ext:
Totally disagree.
These people are individuals who know how to get things done with or without him.
He sets a good example. He like Reagan is an actor and entrepreneur.
This is a definite advantage in front of large groups.
He is comfortable in his own skin.
