Miss Marple

maryrose,

So what? I was specifically standing up for Graham.

Just quit it. I am tired of you portraying me as some sort of lame-brained groupie while you portray yourself as some sort of GOP expert.

NONE of us knows everything going on behind the scenes. I admire President Trump because he is concerned about the average Americans and wants to lift everyone up.

We haven't had a President like this in my lifetime.

Miss Marple

If the people in Congress had been acting the same way as they are now, Obama wouldn't have gotten a lot of things done.

What changed?

maryrose

I considered Reagan and Kennedy and Nixon as very good Presidents🌝
I admire everyone’s enthusiasm wrt our President. I am not saying people can’t have their own opinions. I just see circumstances differently at times.
Susan Collins- disagrees with Trump - she is trashed.
She states why she will vote for Kavanaugh- she is a statesman.
This is the same person.

boatbuilder

"There are plenty of people like President Trump."

Wha?

Name one.

maryrose

Obama ‘s legacy is in the toilet.
He didn’t accomplish anything.
He got Healthcare by dirty tricks and fraud in Al Franken’s Senate race.
It would be repealed by now but for McCain.
One thing President Trump knows is that it takes a group effort to get things done.
Our Senator Ron Portmanis a moderate good guy.
He works behind the scenes to get things done.
Everyone brings their own skill set to the table.
Let us give credit where credit is due.
I defend Republicans because I never been a democrat or voted for a Democrat candidate.
There are some wonderful leaders who will learn how to become even better.

Jack is Back!

maryrose,

Even Reagan wasn't as a fighter like Trump. He used his Hollywood personnae, and a great sense of humor to deflect his opponents. But there has not been a "badass" POTUS like Trump since Old Hickory, or maybe Teddy. In the digital age, Trump has now set the standard for political comportment.

I expect to see much more replications of his confrontational, fight back political behavior. Cheney had it but did it in private. Biden does it but he is smiling when he does. The likes of Paul Ryan are Trump and his Spawn don't follow the rules.

I think it gets dirtier as we approach the election.

boatbuilder

Lots of respect for all--well, almost all-- of them. Some questions as well. They are not like Trump. The man is a unique political animal.

maryrose

Ext:
I think we will gain 5 or 6 seats.
I believe we will win in Indiana, North Dakota,Missouri,
Tennessee, Florida,Montana and keep the Nevada and Arizona seats.

maryrose

Boatbuilder:
He is unique but other styles can win as well.
Hopefully Mike Pence is learning but he was governor of a state so he knows how to win.
The hardest Dem critters to beat in Congress are the former governors.
New Hampshire and Virginia come to mind.

I feel good about our chances in the Senate and the House.
I still want term limits.
Only because of the large number of Dems who just want to die in office.

Jack is Back!

maryrose,

So you are an anti-constitutionaist? No such thing as term limits in our constitution. BTW, it started with a guy in Tampa and his "kick them out" in 1988. Term limits are the worst idea ever.

You want to see Congressional abuse watch a limited congress critter and trhe way they introduce, vote and accept legislation.

Pinandpuller

I don't think I'd call wage and price controls "good" in any context. Kennedy and Nixon both did a lot to entrench bureaucracy viz public employee unions and EPA.

Jared Kushner hasn't paid federal income taxes in years: New York Times

Although Jared Kushner's net worth has quintupled to nearly $324 million in the last decade, he appears to have dodged federal income taxes for several years now, according to a New York Times investigation published Saturday. Kushner, a senior White House adviser and President Trump's son-in-law, managed to avoid hefty tax bills thanks to millions of dollars in losses he recorded. Those losses stemmed from depreciation on Kushner and his company's real-estate holdings. The New York Times [S: NYT] based its findings on confidential financial documents it obtained. Earlier this month, another New York Times investigation alleged that President Trump received at least $413 million from his father's real estate empire, contradicting the president's claims that he built his business on just a $1 million loan from his father.
The Infamous Ignatz

Nixon, even absent Watergate was one of the worst presidents in history.
McGovern would have been lucky to do as much damage domestically as Nixon.

boatbuilder

Other styles don't win. We've been waiting for another Reagan, who was unique. Trump is unique and is nothing like Reagan except that he doesn't give in to the idea that we have to swallow what the DC elite and the NYT think we have to.

Trump has managed to "break the code"--to get past the thicket that the media, the DC elite, the "internationalists" and the educational hierarchy use to keep the great unwashed from impacting the way the world is run.

I thought he was a showman, a huckster and just in it for the publicity. I humbly admit I was very wrong.

He knows the game and he fights it every way he can. And when he gets confronted with a roadblock he comes up with a new plan.

And while I support the guys (and gals) who are on the side of the good (Ted Cruz was my guy), before Trump things were pretty damn demoralized.

According to the NYT, the incompetence of the IRS in pursuing income taxes from wealthy people like Jared Kushner and Donald Trump is just astonishing. Apparently they don't know how to audit returns and don't have any power. People just lie to them and they let it go.

Does this sound like the IRS we have all come to know and love?

Oh no! Not Amal Clooney!

Amal Clooney criticizes Trump for controversial comments on Christine Blasey Ford’s Kavanaugh accusations: report

“A president shouldn’t ridicule a woman who courageously comes forward to allege abuse,” Clooney told the crowd in Philadelphia, according to the outlet.

“We are living through a moment of reckoning and a rebalancing of power,” Clooney reportedly told the crowd. She went on to add that a lot of work remained to be done but she was “optimistic,” the outlet said.

When she concluded, the crowd praised her with standing ovation, the outlet reported.

Congress, next term, should take up legislation that forfeits all federal transportation funding to states that allow illegal aliens to vote in any election, and redistribute to remaining states as election integrity grants.

Yesterday taking the taxi from Waikiki to the airport at Honolulu we got in an hour long horrendous traffic jam that almost had us missing our fight. I asked about the Taxi Driver progress on the rail system project that Another Barbara and I and her hubby protested against in some rally about 8 years back. AB was certain it was going to go billions over budget and never be finished. The Taxi Driver said that her prediction came true. He said they started a lot of building, then ran out of money and partners pulled out, and that now some of what they built is decaying and will have to be torn down and rebuilt if they ever refund the boondoggle again. HART wants deeper look into critical rail construction problems

I think when we were protesting the project it was supposed to be about 6 Billion, now slated to top $8.6 Billion as of 6 months ago.

daddy,

There is not one public transportation project in the whole wide world that pays for itself: Infrastructure, maintenance, operations, etc. No cash box revenue can keep a public transport (bus, light rail, commuter rail, high speed rail) viable. They all take govt subsidization. All of them. Including Japan, China, France, Germany and the UK. Anyone who tells you differently is shading the truth.

Ext. You sir are on a roll.

Comanche Voter

Kevlar Kid--I rarely disagree with you. But Hiram Ulysses Simpson Grant was born in Pt. Pleasant Ohio, some 25 miles east of Cincinnati Ohio. He was a failed soldier and something of an alcoholic when he started to run a store in Galena Il just before the war. He'd been lonesome when stationed out west in California and Oregon during the early 1850s and took to the bottle. Ultimately he was either thrown out of the Army or resigned.

But three other things are important or unusual about U.S. Grant (he never liked the name Hiram).

He was an extraordinarily gifted horseman--important in the day Army officers rode to war.

During the invasion campaign in the Mexican American War of 1847 he was responsible for and learned a tremendous amount about the art of horse drawn logistics. Moving large amounts of men and material was key in fighting the Civil War. He served for a time under or at least with Robert E. Lee in that campaign.

And finally, one thing that made Grant an excellent general was the clarity of his written orders. His subordinates knew what they were supposed to do--there was no confusion. Contrast Stonewall Jackson who "hid the ball" from his subordinate commanders until the very last minute--if then.

The NYT "investigation" of Jared Kushner's tax information is a nothingburger.

Excerpt from the article embedded in EXT's link:

"By Jesse Drucker and Emily Flitter (whatever)
Oct. 13, 2018

Over the past decade, Jared Kushner’s family company has spent billions of dollars buying real estate. His personal stock investments have soared. His net worth has quintupled to almost $324 million.

And yet, for several years running, Mr. Kushner — President Trump’s son-in-law and a senior White House adviser — appears to have paid almost no federal income taxes, according to confidential financial documents reviewed by The New York Times.

His low tax bills are the result of a common tax-minimizing maneuver that, year after year, generated millions of dollars in losses for Mr. Kushner, according to the documents.

But the losses were only on paper — Mr. Kushner and his company did not appear to actually lose any money. (KK: the original article was written in crayola.)

The losses were driven by depreciation, a tax benefit that lets real estate investors deduct a portion of the cost of their buildings from their taxable income every year.

In 2015, for example, Mr. Kushner took home $1.7 million in salary and investment gains. But those earnings were swamped by $8.3 million of losses, largely because of “significant depreciation” that Mr. Kushner and his company took on their real estate, according to the documents reviewed by The Times.

Nothing in the documents suggests Mr. Kushner or his company broke the law. A spokesman for Mr. Kushner’s lawyer said that Mr. Kushner “paid all taxes due.”

In theory, the depreciation provision is supposed to shield real estate developers from having their investments whittled away by wear and tear on their buildings.

In practice, though, the allowance often represents a lucrative giveaway to developers like Mr. Trump and Mr. Kushner.

Simple. Keep it hidden until the hearings are over, then reveal to enerize the media, the base of FULL COMMIes, promote doubt and division. Their calculus was missing a steady number: No one believes a lie about a lie.

I don't know the mastermind of this but they were surely out thought by the whole fantasy.
