At a rally in Ohio Trump talked up U.S. Grant, son of Ohio. Chaos ensued!
The CNN transcription:
Here's what Trump told the crowd in Ohio:
"It also gave you a general who was incredible. He drank a little bit too much. You know who I’m talking about right? So Robert E. Lee was a great general. And Abraham Lincoln developed a phobia. He couldn’t beat Robert E. Lee.
He was going crazy. I don’t know if you know this story. But Robert E. Lee was winning battle after battle after battle. And Abraham Lincoln came home, he said, 'I can’t beat Robert E. Lee.' And he had all of his generals, they looked great, they were the top of their class at West Point. They were the greatest people. There’s only one problem — they didn’t know how the hell to win. They didn’t know how to fight. They didn’t know how.
And one day, it was looking really bad. And Lincoln just said, 'You,' hardly knew his name. And they said, 'Don’t take him, he’s got a drinking problem.' And Lincoln said, 'I don’t care what problem he has. You guys aren’t winning.'
And his name was Grant. General Grant. And he went in and he knocked the hell out of everyone. And you know the story. They said to Lincoln, 'You can’t use him anymore, he’s an alcoholic.' And Lincoln said, 'I don’t care if he’s an alcoholic, frankly, give me six or seven more just like him.' He started to win. Grant really did — he had a serious problem, a serious drinking problem, but man was he a good general. And he’s finally being recognized as a great general.
But Lincoln had almost developed a phobia, because he was having a hard time with a true great fighter, a great general Robert E. Lee. But Grant figured it out. And Grant is a great general, and Grant came from right here."
Now, don't call it Fake News but on Twitter NBC News managed to distill that down to this:
WATCH: President Trump says "Robert E. Lee was a great general" during Ohio rally, calling the Confederate leader "incredible."
Trump called Grant incredible, but he could have said the same about this reporting.
The SPLC swooned because Gen. Lee fought for the slave-holding South:
Robert E. Lee was not a great general, President Trump. He waged a war to hold onto the legal institution of white supremacy.
Uh huh. Rommel was not a great general either since he fought for Hitler. Historians need to search their thesauri carefully.
Lots of cross-currents here.
pagar, is Trump's speech writer.

These rallies are a lot of fun.
I never saw any appearance by The Bath House Rat which gave any semblance of being fun.
He had those appearances where he was in shirtsleeves talking in what was supposed to be a folky, suthin accent or something. And the 40 seals in attendance would start to yammer and he'd say "Hold on now...." and then he'd condescend to the opposition he was mischaracterizing.

Reminds me a bit of the Roman General Fabius Maximus from Livy's accounts of the Wars against Hannibal. His brilliant insight was that he recognized that he personally was not a good enough General to defeat Hannibal, but he realized that he could ultimately defeat Hannibal by holding the high ground and outlasting Hannibal in a war of attrition. He was voted out of control of the Army by the hot-heads, who then went after Hannibal at the great Battle of Cannae where the Roman's lost 80,000 troops in an unbelievable defeat and only just escaped losing the city by Hannibal's resting his exhausted troops and not marching immediately to take Rome and win the War.
Fabius came back into power, continued his war of attrition and Rome eventually produced a General who was a great enough general to take on Hannibal and Defeat him---Scipio Africanus.
I believe Fabius Maximus won the honorific "Father of His Country" for his ability as a farsighted General in keeping Rome from losing the War. I think my memory is dependably accurate on what I've mentioned above, and probably every General in the Civil War who was a grad of West Point would have known the lesson of Fabius Maximus from their military studies, even if nobody in the mainstream media knows a single clue about any of it.
Time to make another recommendation to read Grant's Memoir's if you haven't already. A great read.

I'm throwing George Henry Thomas in as the best Civil War general. I think he was the first 'modern' general in his understanding of the importance of railroads, the telegraph and logistics in general. He was literally high tech for his age. I'll admit he was a bit to methodical and thus not as fast as he coulda been. A bit like Monty in WWII.

I’ve been reading Chernow’s bio of Grant. Not far enough in to judge it, but he does a bit too much 20-20 hindsight stuff, where he’ll say of some event from when he was in his teens or twenties, “From this he must have learned....” I don’t care for all that diagramming. Still enjoying it, though. The story of why he wrote those memoirs is quite poignant.
Posted by: jimmyk on iPhone | October 13, 2018 at 09:26 PM
Kev,
Probably this one: Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S.Grant (Penguin Classics)
Momma years back had given me an old 2 volume set for Christmas of his memoirs
but they were too fragile and heavy to haul around in my book bag so I just opted for whatever paperback edition the Library had which I think was that penguin Classics one:
Mark Twain had this to say about them when they appeared: "The best [memoirs] of any general's since Caesar," but since Twain was instrumental in getting them published that comment tho' probably true, is a bit self serving.

Speaking of Lincoln, my book group is reading Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders, (bardo is a Tibetan Buddhism term for a state of existence between death and afterlife, varying in duration according to the person's conduct in life and manner of, and age at, death; a Christian semi equivalent is purgatory) a fictional account of the death of Lincoln's young son Willy, who was apparently Abe's fave, of something which not even modern antibiotics would resolve quickly. Lincoln apparently would visit the mausoleum at night in grief and hug the deceased body. Most of the narrative occurs in the bardo among souls in transition and what Abe does causes a major disruption in what passes for business as usual; they can see him but can't interact with him.
It's a very unusual narrative (made up, in the "real world", of fictional excerpts from nonexistent books) that somehow works very effectively (one member of the group, who usually throws books that go through time shifts against the wall, is enjoying it). I haven't read enough to give it an unqualified recommendation but the author is very good at what he does.

Lift more citizens from welfare to work
dependence to independence
& from poverty to prosperity
To continue this movement you need to vote Republican
for years you watched as your leaders apologized for America, now you have a President that is standing up for America
A vote for a Republican Congress is a vote for more jobs, more wealth, & more products made right here in the good ol' U.S.A..
It's a vote to respect our laws & respect the heroes of law enforcement....
A vote for Republicans is a vote to reject the Democrats politics of hatred, anger & division & to celebrate the greatness & the glory of being an American.
It is not up to the media, it is not up to the pundits, it's up to YOU to decide your own fate. You have the power with your vote to defend your families, defend your country, defend your values, your faith, & to defend your dignity.
Loyal citizens like you helped build this country & together we are taking back our county. Returning power to the American people.

Gus,
I know your brother works for the Secret Service or some associated branch of state security, and maybe what I'd like to ask is completely classified which he can't tell you so I'll just address it this way: I assume DJT has had his own private security before and during his campaign and that there's some agreement between his own muscle and the state's to coordinate and maximize effectiveness. Trump has to be a marked man after Hodgkinson, Rand Paul and assorted Antifa type nutjobs. He is *the* biggest danger to the Swamp and those dickweeds won't go quietly. The security has to be a model of efficiency considering how many rallies he has.
Someone mentioned about the Bathhouse Rat forever meeting with his donors. The beauty of DJT is there are no donors and he doesn't owe anyone a fucking thing.
