Good morning!

Polls are garbage. Look at this:

McBath DEM 46%
Handel GOP 41%

McBath+5

261 registered voters the week before the election, are you kidding me?

NYT/Siena again. 75% of House prognostication is based on the work of a single polling firm. Meanwhile prognosticators ignore hard early voting data.

Hell of a slender limb, folks.

Expect a lot of "what if the Reps hold the House?" stories in the next couple of days.

rse

Porch-that's my district and we have turned the ringer off the land line to avoid the polling. I don't think that's unusual.

McBath doesn't even live in the district and has been voting and has her vehicles registered in Tennessee. Oprah's visit to cobb yesterday though to help stacey abrams and get suburban women out for her affects this race because part of the district is in cobb.

With cobb's taxes, homesteading a house you weren't living in will not play well.

Porch light, do you know if they count the early votes early?

I hope they don’t.

Jack,

It appears the bridge from Hong Kong to Macau is complete and in operation, and the cab driver today in Hong Kong on the drive to the airport said they are now building a high speed train from Hong Kong to Beijing which is probably based on the Shanghai Maglev technology.. But at the same time I also saw that story posted today that the authorities just closed down the last independent Book Store in Hong Kong that was selling books critical of the Communist Party, so "sameold, sameold," among all the new stuff.

BTW, this just popped up and has us all excited, since Sydney and Sinagapore are both great layover cities and this will allow us to finally overfly Australia and see what it looks like in daylight, then get 2 days hanging out at the Beach in Manley: FedEx Express Launches Sydney-Singapore Flight to Support Business Growth

Donald Trump: The Word ‘Racist’ is Used to Describe ‘Every Republican That’s Winning’

President Donald Trump defied charges Thursday from Democrats and the establishment media that he was a racist for supporting tough measures on immigration enforcement. “Well you know the word ‘racist’ is used about every Republican that’s winning,” Trump said in an interview with Christian Broadcast Network. “Any time a Republican is leading they take out the ‘R’ word, the ‘racist’ word.”

Trump denied that he was anti-immigrant, asserting that the country needed them but that all immigrants had to come into the country legally.

“I’m not anti-immigrant at all. I’m all for people coming into the country legally and people based on merit,” he said.

The president also announced that he would no longer continue the practice of “catch and release” for migrants claiming asylum at the southern border.

“We’re going to catch; we’re not going to release. They’re going to stay with us until the deportation hearing or the asylum hearing takes place,” Trump said during a speech at the White House.

GOLDBERG: Do we think this is the end of it or do you think we’re in the middle of a long process in which people are being radicalized and are going to try to carry out their anger in violent ways?

CLAPPER: Regrettably, yes. I think we’re probably in for more of this sort of thing. … This is how people get energized, radicalized. It’s not unlike what I experienced with the life of ISIS [Islamic State] who was very successful using social media only to recruit and radicalize people, and it’s almost a very similar psychology at work, here.

As long as our “stable genius” creates an environment that seemingly condones this sort of behavior, we’re going to have more of it. I’m convinced.

...

[Former CIA Director Michael] Hayden said, “For political dissidents … they now have a set of grievances to which they can attach themselves which have been essentially articulated by the President of the United States of America.”

Hayden then said the Trump administration traffics in neo-Nazi narratives regarding “international Jewry”:

"If you look at the incident in Squirrel Hill in Pittsburgh, there is a latent anti-Semitism, but the proximate cause was his belief that international Jewry was sponsoring the invasion of America from that caravan still a thousand miles from the Rio Grande which has been a constant theme coming out of the White House."

Goldberg offered no challenge to either Clapper’s or Hayden shared analysis. He markets himself as a politically objective and non-partisan news media figure.

Vegan woman fined $1,170 for threatening to kill her Italian mother for making meat sauce

Italian newspaper Gazzetta di Modena reported this week that the 48-year-old woman has been ordered by local courts to pay a $520 court fine and $650 to her mother for physically threatening her with a kitchen knife, after the sexagenarian whipped up Bolognese sauce in their newly shared home.

...

The vegan daughter told court officials that, prior to moving to live with her mother, she had long been avoiding "sensory" and "olfactory contact” with animal products.

Lawyers further told the Gazzetta di Modena that there had been “an escalation of aggressive episodes, always over food,” before things nearly took a turn for the fatal.

Furious with the smell of meat sauce simmering on the stove one day in March 2016, the daughter reportedly grabbed a knife and made a grave threat.

“If you won’t stop on your own then I’ll make you stop. Quit making ragú, or I’ll stab you in the stomach,” the angry daughter said, as per The Telegraph, inciting her mother to press charges.

Huh. I usually wait for winter to make Bolognese.

Heitkamp Appears to Discourage Voting by Hunters: ‘It’s Really Important That People Understand the Consequences of Voting’

North Dakota's branch of the Democratic Party released a pair of ads, first flagged by North Dakota columnist Rob Port, warning hunters that voting in the state could result in the loss of any hunting licenses they hold in other states.

"ATTENTION HUNTERS: If you vote in North Dakota, you may forfeit hunting licenses you have in other states. If you want to keep your out-of-state hunting licenses, you may not want to vote in North Dakota," the ads said.

A reporter asked Heitkamp if she knew anything about the party's ads.

"A lot of the kind of transition that people have on voting it means you're a resident. It means you pay taxes here. It means that if you want a residential hunting license in Minnesota you aren't going to get that if you vote here. And so I think it's really important that people understand the consequences of voting, and that goes to taxes and things like your hunting," Heitkamp responded.

The reporter then asked if one could lose a hunting license by voting in North Dakota.

"If your hunting license is a residential hunting license in another state," Heitkamp said.

A spokesman for North Dakota Gaming and Fish said he had never heard of hunters losing their licenses after voting in North Dakota.

Heitkamp is trailing against her opponent, Rep. Kevin Cramer (R., N.D.), by as many as 16 points in recent polls.

Google: Biased YouTube ‘Can’t Be Forced to Change’

According to an October 31 Bloomberg article, Google filed a statement with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in response to a lawsuit challenge by conservative outlet PragerU. In the filing, Google argued that government regulation would have “disastrous practical consequences.”

Google further argued that enforcing the First Amendment to an online platform “would undermine important content regulation.” In the filing, the company said, “If they are bound by the same First Amendment rules that apply to the government, YouTube and other service providers would lose much of their ability to protect their users against offensive or objectionable content -- including pornography, hate speech, personal attacks, and terrorist propaganda.”

Bloomberg’s Peter Blumberg wrote that Google “made clear that even if it does discriminate on the basis of political viewpoints -- which it denies -- it can’t be forced to change.” While the First Amendment doesn’t apply necessarily to private companies, YouTube, Google’s sister company, tries to make the case that it is a neutral platform with no political bias.

However, this seems to hurt the social media platform more than help it. PragerU founder Dennis Prager said, “If Google, the owner of YouTube, would announce it is a left-wing advocacy group, that would make a lawsuit harder to defend.”

Old Lurker

Jimmy since I see you here, a few more answers to your "why so many vacant stores" question.

It used to be that the retail industry could calculate how many stores a given population in a given radius could support. So just so many drug stores and pizza parlors in a "neighborhood" center; just so many supermarkets and big boxes in "community" centers, and just so many stores of various types in big malls. It was quite scientific.

Amazon changes every single one of those ratios until you get down to the convenience needs in a neighborhood center. But even there only X number of nail salon can be supported, etc.

In spite of that generational tectonic shift that next day - same day deliveries from Amazon created, the "city fathers" still want the street levels of all office buildings to be "retail" not office, whether the developer wants it or not. So the government in effect forces an over supply (even by pre-Amazon ratios) of retail in exchange for each office building approved. Ouch.

Two things make it "look" OK as that happens. First, the developer can usually insert major cash into his construction loan so that when the building is built, he can "buy" a tenant with free cash for build-outs, and much reduced rent for the first year or two. That lure will often attract a tenant because his capital needs are so low for the first few years...but eventually the freebies run out and the tenant has to make it in the real world. Which they can't because there are too many stores per the above. Getting rid of a non payment tenant can take several years during which time the store sits empty and neighbors don't understand why.

The second thing that happens is all that cash can lure a viable business away from a viable location, and the new landlord benefits but the old landlord is stuck with a new vacancy which is hard to fill because there are too many stores. Etc etc.

Finally, to your question "why not just reduce the rent", two reasons: first, the rent is not that big a factor in the budgets of many businesses so the demand does not respond very quickly to marginal reductions in asking rents. The second reason is that the value of the entire property is determined by the face amount of the rents, and believe it or not appraisers might place a higher total value on a development that has a token amount of retail getting say $75 per foot and they will impute that to the vacant space or two in that building or next door. If the Landlord gets tired of it and signs a lease for say $40 just to have a tenant, that new rent of $40 becomes the comp used to evaluate the entire project. See how that works?
