When is a wave not a wave? Colby Itkowitz of the WaPo takes on the challenge of spinning last night as a "wave" win for the Dems, or else not.
Let me skip past the Dem triumphalism and get to the frowny face:
Trump tweeted that the night was a “tremendous success.” And from his vantage point, it was.
The massive repudiation of Trump that Democrats hoped for simply didn’t happen. In fact, in many states where Trump campaigned hard for Republicans, it seems the opposite occurred. He focused throughout the campaign on saving the Senate for the GOP, and it appears his efforts paid off.
And while House Democrats can now go forward with impeachment if they like, Trump is buffered by a Republican Senate that would never convict him.
Notably, the Democratic candidates who received the most national attention and fanfare lost or are on track to lose. In Georgia, even appearances by Oprah Winfrey and former president Barack Obama don’t seem to have gotten gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams across the finish line. And O’Rourke, who reached almost rock-star status (Beyoncé posed on Instagram Tuesday wearing a Beto hat!), couldn’t overtake Cruz in the end.
There is no way Trump views last night as a repudiation.
PILING ON: Newt Gingrich on how to deal with the Dem House:
“The White House should drag it out, bog it down, take the momentum away and make it go on forever,” said Gingrich. He also encouraged conservatives to foster what he believes would be counter-productive impeachment talk among Democrats. “Make it the speaker’s problem, make her deal with the nutty wing of her party.”
He says 'nutty', I say 'crazy' - we may be able to find a compromise here.
Yay, our side!

Trump is claiming an era of bipartisanship where he and Pelosi negotiate, then push it through the Senate with the help of some R's.
Some victory.

Decent analysis, at least the part TM quoted.

Even I see the 4-D in Trump talking up bipartisanship and cooperation with Pelosi - he'll send stuff to the House, it WON'T get Dem support, and he'll blame intransigent, obstructionist Democrats.

He'll push Ivanka's socialism to Pelosi and call it victory when he stuffs it down our throats.

Oh for heavens sake Henry, he’s playing them like a fiddle. He knows there won’t be any bi-partisanship coming from the Dems in the House. He’s setting them up so he can campaign against their obstructionism. The muddle loves hearing that can’t we all get along crap, and how is the House going to look now if they vote in the first day to impeach him, which is what their base wants him them to do.

Trump owns the Senate now. Whatever he wants from them, he’ll get—and he wants those judicial appointments and trade deals. Whatever legislation that comes from the House won’t even make it to the floor in the Senate unless Trump wants it to, and if he wants it to, it was going to happen anyway with a Repub House.

President gets subpoena, "Hang on a sec, let me just check with the Supremes....."
Sessions departs DoJ, President appears in Rose Garden to introduce newly appointed Atty General, Devin Nunes.
Devin Nunes isn't an attorney, so as much as I'd love to see him as AG, I don't think that will happen.
Though what the hell---maybe a non attorney AG is what we need.
Andrea Mitchell called Nunes a clown this morning on Morning Joe. John Meachum said something about "DJT versus regular people" in talking about polarization.
I was truly shocked to witness what goes on there now.
I'd watched every morning I wasn't working from November 2008 into 2011. Joe totally missed the 2010 House flip, so he lost a big chunk of credibility with me after that. And then he became a Dem...
He'd been fairly balanced before then, both personally, and as far guests.

Yes, yes, yes, can't give up. They won't let us, it is a cage match, fight or die.
But look things in the face:
Trump winning '16 was a miracle.
Since then GOPe held us back.
The Trump base has not folded but it has not expanded like it could have (and still may).
Is FL lost due to felon voting?
The MidWest reverted to Dem control: MI, WI, MN are all in horrible shape now.
Trump will be a maestro in slapping around the Dem House.
But how can Trump possibly win in '20? After 2 more years of ceaseless MSM fake news?
We will all still vote for him, but all those LIVs who rejected a future of jobs-not-mobs, bold success in foreign affairs, why would they turn around and vote Repub in '20?

The story of yesterday can be summed up by Ohio. Mike DeWine, a very uninspiring candidate (my cardiologist's assistant texted her husband that I called him Adam Ant), handily beat fuckface Cordray to replace Katshit, while hangdog Renacci lost to the Restraining Order. What was the difference? DeWine ran a better campaign; I don't particularly like him but his ads spelled out what he's about. I still have no fucking clue what Renacci stands for because, other than pointing out the obvious on Brown's MeToo situation versus his Kavanaugh vote, I don't recall a single this-is-who-I-am ad by him. Somehow the GOPe finishing schools have to get candidates to understand basic marketing principles. Renacci and Josh Mandel are both failures who need to go away forever.

Regarding Florida, there are too many assumptions that the new felons are automatically Dem voters. Stop. Republicans do commit crimes and lest not forget that whoever the Dem challenger is. Will he get the same support that Hillary or Obama received?
This point has been made but will reiterate. In Nevada, in the beginning, both the Democrats Rosen and Sysolak came out as hard against Trump, the Resistance. But they both switched gears as that was not polling well and finished the campaign as moderates, willing to work in a bi-partisan way. The anti-Trump message was discarded.
Unforced errors- I believe the talk of rescinding citizenship damage the changes of some Republicans in the West. This is something that definitely needs to be addressed but the timing right before the election was horrible. It gave the Dems the opportunity to demagogue Trump and by extension the Republicans.

If only that would apply to the Senate and the House.
Incidentally, I don't get the claim that Brat was "redistricted." Redistricting would have happened in 2012, no? From the dead thread:
JMH "I was shocked to discover that my county is not as reliably Republican as I thought it was."
JMH, I think the Democrat - Republican formulation went by the boards once we discovered that they were really just the Uniparty, pretending all the while to be simply the loyal opposition.
So I think the surprise you feel is how many of our neighbors really just do not want the type of country we inherited from our parents. We are now divided between one bell curve plainly centered on Socialism, and another bell curve centered on the ideals of the Founders, more or less.

Posted by: JMHanes | November 07, 2018 at 01:00 PM
98% of incumbents win re-election. 45 Republican incumbents chose not to run this time. That put us in a big hole to start with. Add to that the fact that the Dems did a much better job of recruiting appealing candidates, and the lose of the House shouldn’t be a surprise.
Trump single-handedly not only saved the Senate, he increased our majority. Saved some governorships too. On the campaign trail there is nothing like him. But whether he wins in 2020, is going to depend a lot on future events that we can only guess at right now.
As an example. What would GWB’s presidency have been like without 911? Would we have had Obama without an Iraq war? Events could be looming on the horizon that we can’t possibly imagine right now.

A lot depends on one's expectations after Trump's 2016 win, henry. I never thought that at the federal level, serious entitlement reform would happen under Trump, with or without a Speaker Pelosi. I was hoping for legislation modulating the ridiculous one world immigration policy pushed not only by the progs, but also by the WSJ editorial page. Any chance at real immigration reform is gone now for at least two years. Trump will need to continue to deal with this by Executive Order. As to taxes, unless lame duck legislation is passed, sayonara continued tax reform for at least the next two years.
I can see how the Walker loss would be tough on sentient Wisconsinites. But perhaps a majority of Wisconsinites will regain sanity before Wisconsin becomes Illinois.

Because my catch up took too long....
How I feel about these midterms IS NOTHING compared to how I felt when Obama was re-elected in 2012 and we failed to capture the senate. We survived, but that was awful.
We all knew that it was going to be an uphill battle to hang on to the House. I’m thrilled that we expanded our lead in the Senate, and I’m relieved to hear Pelosi paying lip service to campaign finance reform as a first task and cleaning up the swamp. Democrats, some of them anyway, got the message. That’s good for the country.
In some ways I think this is probably a relief for Trump. He was clearly frustrated by his own party sitting around saying “this is not who we are” rather than getting things done - passing legislation over and over and sending it to the senate and illuminating the crap going on there. Now he’s free to make deals, have conversations, and weigh all options. It is very foolish to think that he won’t be sitting down with Pelosi to tell her exactly what he has on her swampmates.
Is it 4d chess? Hell no. It’s high stakes poker and Trump is all in.
Now back to catch up.

The question of the election being a honey trap for election fraud: you know, all of these questions assume that the POTUS is the head of the Executive Branch, and I’m seriously questioning whether that is true anymore.
We have the spectacle of a special prosecutor, the FBI, and the DoJ as a whole, committing blatant, in your face obstruction of justice, subornation of perjury, and extortion to commit perjury, and nobody does anything about it. Nobody gets fired, nobody gets prosecuted, nobody gets more than a vague and oblique Twitter slapdown.
At some point if Trump doesn’t stop these people from doing what they are doing under his authority, then they become official Executive Branch actions, not law-breaking by rogue individuals.

Certainly, cathyf, it was disappointing that no public official chose to challenge the preexisting condition fooferaw.

A serious worry, cathyf.
In addition, I'm concerned that Mueller will throw out some red meat for the Confederacy of Clowns now in charge of the House. In that case, I expect Pres.Trump to drag out all the hidden dead bodies.
