People are off doing whatever they do while waiting for the Big Game tomorrow. Just to get in the mood, here is ESPN recapping "Bo Over The Top". As an aside, I had forgotten that Herschel Walker was in the SEC at the same time. Whoo, tough time to be an SEC linebacker.

About Saudi head gear: Its called a Ghutra and the band around it is the igal. Ghutras come in many different patterns, and colors. They can repsent tribes, place in civil government, ones profession etc.
A keffiyeh is a larg scarf like headwear that covers the neck, head, and if necessary the mouth (from sand storms as an example). It can be held in place with an igal but is not necessary.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. The bird weighed in at 31 lbs for only 8 of us, so plenty of leftovers. As a free range bird, it was not bred for huge breasts, so not as much meat, but still lots for sammiches and meals and soup eventually.
A wonderful day. It rained early in the morning; @ 1/2", prefect to soften the ground and get sprouts up in the burn areas near us. Dropped pies off for friends and our local fire station and then home and cleaning up for guests. Low key, low drama, just the way I like it.
Will have to venture out for some essentials, but will avoid Black Friday as much as possible.

From the same crowdlaw article from the previous thread--
"Hayek argued that the challenge policymakers face in making order out of
complex and distributed information is doomed to failure. He argued that market
pricing mechanisms are the best way to make sense of available knowledge. But
what if other collective intelligence mechanisms beyond that of supply and de-
mand market mechanisms could help? What if new technology could unlock new
approaches that enable more individuals—not only interest groups—to weigh in
both on how to advance stakeholder interest, but also how to solve our collective
problems? What if a city council or parliament could get rapid counsel from uni-
versity professionals, for example, to help improve their understanding of science
and technology?
We need what Dan Esty terms ‘green’ rather than ‘red lights’, namely reg-
ulations that assist with the growth of new technological tools while ensuring
that the public is also protected. These new methods can loosely be described
as what NESTA describes as “anticipatory regulation” (Esty 2017; Mulgan 2017).
Anticipatory regulation implies that, rather than top-down prescriptions, the fast-
paced and ever-changing nature of new technology (and other complex social is-
sues) calls for more open dialogue with innovators and entrepreneurs as well as
consumers to ensure that regulations are neither overly burdensome nor under-
protective. Getting this admixture right, demands regulations that are iterative
rather than final with a more data-driven feedback loop to assess what is work-
ing and to know where and how to target scarce regulatory resources.
But for law and policymaking to become more flexible, evolutionary and ag-
ile, policymakers need to be able to interact with a broader public with more ex-
pertise and more diverse values to improve the quality of lawmaking. We need
more innovative, creative yet implementable know how to enable our regulations
and policies to keep up with the pace of technological change."
This also ties to another term that came up this week with respect to all these plans for us--'data science for public good".

That's not how it looked when I copied it.
Here's more. Just think of the fun in outlawing 'structural inequality'.
With experimentation and testing, crowdlaw has the potential to go beyond
accountability and to make public institutions more effective by enabling decisionmakers to leverage diverse and innovative solutions to solve problems more
quickly but also to putting on the agenda new problems to solve, such as those of
structural inequality, that have too long been neglected by political elites.

On a more interesting note, Jazzy was sitting on the couch with me as I channel surfed into the National Dog Show last night after getting home from dinner at Mrs lyle’s mother’s place. That dog was riveted watching TV! She twice got off the couch and sat looking up a the TV above the mantle and then got back up next to me. She kept sniffing the air trying to smell the dogs on the screen. Never had a dog do anything remotely close to her behavior. Fascinating.
That behavior is what two of our dogs do... the other two aren't even aware the tv is there. Mine will also look behind the TV to see where the dogs went to when they walk them around the ring and they "look" like they are walking off the screen. One of our dogs also reacts to ANY animal on TV - horses, cats, all get a response.
She has also developed the ability to recognize the music from ads with dogs in them and will come running or look up from her bed to look at the TV when those commercials come on - and bark at them. She also gets the dog 'sad face' when those ASPCA commercials come on and honestly looks upset at what she sees. Coolest dog I've ever had.

Your comment re the Clintoon money laundering foundation has been on my mind since whoever first posted the stats here a few days ago.
So, to ask a somewhat rhetorical question, if they have laundered something on the order of a 1/2 B$ over the last decade, where did it all go? If it really is laundering, who received it? They don't seem to be keeping much of it, given that they are forced to travel 1st class because apparently no one is willing to loan them their heavy iron to travel.

FINALLY caught up! Some comments on various posts of last couple of days:
1)
Libs have for years told us that those in black culture are not intelligent or motivated enough to vote when there are any rules for who and how to vote. Now the term is: “he used a dog whistle phrase…” Someone mentioned yesterday that only dogs hear dog whistle pitch. Are liberals now saying that black culture is a bunch of dogs… or act like dogs?

I think the idea of Liberal Judges & Justices vs Conservative is a little off the mark. Yes, everyone has a world view but I think the problem is judges who rule on what they “feel” or think is best for the country instead of what they know the constitution. I think that is the problem with Kennedy and Roberts along with the Liberal wing of the SCOTUS. I think Thomas is and Scalia was true constitutionalist. Hope Kavanagh will be too. Alito may be more conservative which is more in tune with the constitution than are Libs. The way the lib wing of the SCOTUS thinks, we should do away with two branches and have rule by a few old liberals. Who cares what the constitution actually says

Sid, when libs use that “dog whistle” expression they have in mind that white racists hear it and respond, as though it’s a call for them to put their hoods on. Of course the reality is that it’s liberals who see everything in racial terms, so innocuous terms like “public hanging” or “monkey around” get made into racial slurs—if made by a R candidate of course.

MM, by now I think the network of those of us who are in contact with others is such that if anyone just spoke up and said "I want to reach Chitown Lurker", eg, there would be offers from several others who can arrange just about anything.
We used to have a massive email list that we would use when JOM was down, but that was not ideal.

Division I recruiting is intense. Walk-ons are competing against high school all-americans. the year i showed for walk-on tryouts at ND they'd recruited and scholarshipped 35 high school all-americans. the practice teams were 22 high school all-americans, with 10 backup players to fill in for injuries and dings along the way.
if Curt's kid didn't have the numbers in h.s. it would be no surprise to have to walk on.

I know, Narc. The only thing new this time was we elected a kick ass, in your face, NYC developer as CEO so we thought this time, finally, it might be different.
It was never going to be done by Congress or SC's. And once Trump was playing without a war time AG on his team, and he allowed that to stand, it was easy to lose faith early in the game.
Now, as Kelly says, the caravan has moved on.

Here's a few new data points
Jamal Khashoggi's grandfather, Muhammad Khashoggi, who was of Turkish origin, married a Saudi Arabian woman and was personal physician to King Abdulaziz Al Saud, the founder of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Khashoggi was the nephew of the high-profile Saudi Arabian arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi, known for his part in the Iran–Contra scandal, who was estimated to have had a net worth of US$4 billion in the early 1980s. Khashoggi was the first cousin of Dodi Fayed, who was dating Diana, Princess of Wales, when the two were killed in a car crash in Paris.
Khashoggi was a known associate of Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal, who owns the top 5 floors of the Mandalay Bay and was arrested shortly after the mass-shooting on "corruption charges", per order of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman. The CIA now says that bin Salman ordered Khoshoggi's murder, but Trump is apparently turning a blind eye.

CH,
We have a couple JBLs floating around from before the Sonos showed up. The JBLs are perfectly fine for what it sounds like you want: driving off your phone and streaming mp3 format stuff. That represents about the limit of Bluetooth bandwidth. You need WiFi to get the full BW of the original source, which for me is mostly the principle of the thing. Old ears are BW limited prolly below that. :(
The real advantage of the Sonos stuff is being able to dial up any node on your network and switch sources/volumes as you need them. That way I can serve off my network drive or connect to Rush, etc. right off my phone. The ultimate remote.

True That Dave.
General Michael Hayden had a stroke and is in the hospital. Is he a witness to anything shady?

OL, the holiday feast was grand. Spending time with Mrs Kid and our College Man, just the three of us, was pure contentment! Tx for axing. :)

That injury to the UCF QB was horrific. Yuck! His knee was at a 90 angle to his femur.
Winning streak in serious doubt...

Fascinating story about a real Spock who was destroyed by the world not meeting his expectations of clean cut logic; Walter Pitts.

Kellyanne Conway’s Husband Calls Trump’s Attack on Ninth Circuit ‘Misleading’
Makes some sense, if true, but he still deserves the boot for what he's doing to his wife, counselor to a president and the first female campaign manager to ever win a presidential election.
Can any women here imagine coming home late from the White House to this schlub?
"Did you say anything to embarrass me today, dear?"

Btw, the piece doesn't include data on the percentage of 9th Circuit decisions that are reviewed by the SCOTUS vs. those of other circuits. If "the Supreme Court doesn’t usually take cases to affirm them," as Conway says, that would seem to be a metric of interest.

Isn't letting someone snap his picture embarrassment enough?

Man Tran,
I plan on using the speakers for running off Spotify streaming, which on headphones seems comparable to CD quality. Did I screw up by not going with Sonos? I don't care about listening to non music with them.
This Hoo/Hokie game is pretty good.

My guess is he's competing with Kellyanne. He's not happy with her being more successful than him.
Kind of a fireable offense, if you ask me. Who wouldn't be their own spouse's biggest fan?

CH,
I agree with ManTran: get speakers that use Wifi instead of Bluetooth. Bluetooth inherently is a low-bandwidth format; Wifi has a much higher bandwidth.
Now the speakers you are considering are mid-fi at best. So Bluetooth may be good enough. But you may well get others, and it is better to integrate them into your wifi network now.
Interestingly, I spent much of yesterday trying to find outdoor amplified speakers that use a wifi signal. Nearly all use Bluetooth. I did find one manufacturer who makes them; they are compatible with Airplay and wifi, which will work for us.
