Sorry to be depressing but remember this?

Now there is one for boys:

DrJ

Isn't it remarkable how peaceful it is here tonight? Thank you, TM!

I've enjoyed following European News later since I am so bummed about our Election Fraud, and I take pleasure at seeing the protests in France and Teresa May's Brexit disintegration.

On the Macron thing, about his raising fuel costs significantly to pay for his Climate Control schemes, it makes me think that if we had not pulled out of those stupid Paris Climate Accords, we US Taxpayers would probably have been providing the Funding that he is now trying to get out of the pockets of his own angry people.
Thanks, President Trump. MAGA!

DrJ

In other news, my granddaughter has taken in a dog that was orphaned by the Camp Fire.

I was briefly concerned that everyone was going to start posting their own living room trebuchet pics after Henry changed his avatar.

I forgot to welcome Garden Gnerd and congratulate Frau. Welcome GG and congrats Frau.

My guess on DrJ’ pic was going to be peter’s route home today.

What do you call a yacht in St Tropez without petrol? A floating dock. A raft.

Narciso79

Ah they are so vekakte it can't be quantified, Spain does have an oil company yepsol but they are busy elsewhere France has total they might as well be pumping Sudanese blood Italy similarly.

Narciso79

Steinhauer uses that element in his first two tourist novels.

Pinandpuller

The only reason I can think of for a shortage of petrol in France is government subsidies keeping the price artificially low which Is why the price signal telling people to stay home didn't get thru. Now their supplies are exhausted it's the whole argument against anti price gouging laws.

boatbuilder

Dave-That Brian Ferry thing was...odd.

My grandma used to live next to THE Firestones. Isn't that why France colonized indochina? Or Belgium the Congo?

Pinandpuller

'Here I come' is the newest black phrase taking the nation by storm from my viewpoint.

Narciso79

The former was to protect French missionaries, the Spanish even gave Saigon a try and then gave up.the latter I think everyone was grabbing colonies they wanted to get some in the worst way

Jim,SunnyvaleCA,USA

I've only been skimming but noticed this from kk: mebbe JimNorCal can provide an update as Mt H is in his neighborhood

I've seen snow 3 or 4 times since I came to CA from Michigan back in the 70s.
Once in Rockridge district of Oakland. We all ran outside and caught flakes on our tongues.
Once in Marin County. Thick snow with big flakes that muffled sound.
Another time here in the South Bay where it melted right away down in the Valley but we drove up to Mt Hamilton and kicked around a few drifts that persisted in higher altitudes.
Don't recall the exact years though.

Pinandpuller

The Belgians took rubber trees to the Congo I believe.

Have any of you European travelers ever seen a pumpjack?

Jim,SunnyvaleCA,USA

Also, I see mention of TRS-80 ("Trash 80").
I worked at one of the other pre-Microsoft PC companies, IMSAI.
The management were mostly enthusiasts of EST (Erhard Seminar Training?) and it was a VERY weird company. They did provide free lunches in the break room as part of the company culture, though, which was nice. IMSAI must've been one of the earliest with that perq.

Pinandpuller

daddy

I wasn't trying to one up you, I was being silly.

Do you mean refineries or executives?

When I was a kid I lived around the corner from an Amocco refinery. The whistle blasted every day at 3:30. Now it's the Three Crowns Golf Course.

Narciso79

I believe it's the latter pin:

https://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/nov/15/justice-department-prepares-charge-julian-assange-/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&utm_medium=RSS

I think the only major refinery there is the flint hills one that used to be? Owned by koch bros.

Narciso79

It was an unrelated case.

Pinandpuller

It was actually a little funny. I had to deliver propane to the Little America refinery. There's process that uses it about a hundred yards from where they load bulk propane on trailers and rail cars.

daddy

Pin,

On one side I have a guy who runs an Independent Oil Company, and his partner is one block over. On my other side is a BP guy and his Chevron wife, or maybe it's the other way round. 2 houses up is the head of Royal Shell, Alaska Division, except that when they cut back so severely a few years back she headed back to their headquarters in Norway, so she drops thru' periodically and its frequently fill of visiting execs. And lastly the guy across the street is into Eco stuff and he helped put up the 11 Wind Turbines over on Fire Island across from the airport.

So all in all my neighbors generate all the energy in the State. And I use it up.

Narciso79

It just struck me that a fellow who has done such a bang up job like banomar in Yemen, was actually hacking the communications of persons from the UAE and other players like Alaham and Cruzin (they came up with that phantom bid for general Flynn, just as he was about to be sentenced) are untouchable.

Narciso79

Just caught up, late start and lots of wonderful links and no trolls.

Pin, I had a friend who was a juvenile delinquent (worse than I) who had a silver front tooth.

Anytime he did something wrong the police would ask the victim to describe his assailant. "He had a silver front tooth."

Boom! That's all the cops needed to hear. Fortunately his mother was a civilian employee of the PD, so he caught a lot of breaks, but still did a stint in reform school (juvenile prison).

Local TV reported that NYC was a mess. Mayor DeBlasio called it "the perfect storm." Plows and salt trucks were missing according to "man on the street" interviews. MTA buses had no chains, just all weather tires, but lost traction on slight up-slopes.

An accident occurred on the GW bridge and turned the West Side Drive into a parking lot.

The mid-town PA bus terminal was packed with people trying to get buses out of the city. Buses were having trouble getting into and out of the terminal because of traffic congestion.

Nobody in the NYC hierarchy looks good. Out here in northern NJ, less snow, so not as many problems.

Advocates bringing back small ships like PT boats and corvettes and packing them with updated equipment and communications.

Doesn't sound feasible to me, probably to easy to take out, but he wants them built on the Super Hornet (FA-18) concept. Electronically connected with agile weapons systems.

That's an intriguing idea. The FA-18 is a multi-platform in the air. Smaller, faster multi-platform ships might be useful.

If you could add drones, a small non-survivable ship, might have enough defensive capability to screen the ship from attack, or to launch a first strike.

Julian Assange, a major target of the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 US election, has been criminally charged in secret, an apparent mistake in a court filing has indicated.

The court filing, submitted by US authorities in an unrelated case, mentioned the existence of criminal charges against someone named “Assange” even though that was not the name of the defendant.

Assange, who has been holed up in Ecuador’s embassy in London since seeking asylum in 2012, is considered a wanted man by US law enforcement agencies after his controversial publication of classified diplomatic cables and other secret US government documents.

One of Assange’s attorneys, Barry Pollack, said it was a “dangerous path for a democracy to take” for a government to bring criminal charges against someone for publishing truthful information.

“The news that criminal charges have apparently been filed against Mr. Assange is even more troubling than the haphazard manner in which that information has been revealed,” Pollack said in an email.

Thanks for bring that to my attention, Narciso.

The two questions Clinton will have to answer within 30 days, per Sullivan's ruling are:

1) Describe the creation of the clintonemail.com system, including who decided to create the system, the date it was decided to create the system, why it was created, who set it up, and when it became operational.

2) During your October 22, 2015 appearance before the U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee on Benghazi, you testified that 90 to 95 percent of your emails “were in the State’s system” and “if they wanted to see them, they would certainly have been able to do so.” Identify the basis for this statement, including all facts on which you relied in support of the statement, how and when you became aware of these facts, and, if you were made aware of these facts by or through another person, identify the person who made you aware of these facts.

The 9 days in November beginning on Nov 18th with J'town massacre and murder of congressman Leo Ryan (D-San Mateo), culminating with the assassination of Mayor George Moscone and City Councilman Harvey Milk on November 27th.... a one-two horror punch.

Which is why I don't live in CA.

My spouse and I were fourth year med students, with residency opportunities in SF. It is customary for M4s to do rotations at institutions where they may want to train, to see about 'fit,' so out to UCSF we drove to do month long electives---and got there just as all that utter insanity began.

I wish I could convey what it was like to get the paper each morning and try to make some sense out of what was happening. Of course we had no idea who Jim Jones was, could only begin to imagine how he convinced all those people to even go to Guyana with him, let alone 'drink the KoolAid' (that is the origin of that phrase), the killings of Dan Ryan and shootings of his staff, and then the assassinations of Moscone and Milk , in City Hall---

what kind of fourth or fifth world place is this???

NFW was I going to live out there in crazy land.
Didn't even put it on our list.

Had a fabulous five weeks otherwise, and have treasured memories of exploring the city, Marin, Napa and Sonoma. Still look at our Kodachromes from then and marvel at how beautiful it is, and we've come to spend a fair amount of time in what truly is The Golden State---but absolutely no regrets.

I blame screens and kids not being outdoors, doing physical tasks/playing. Like Mt2 pic posted above--slithering through weeds on their bellies, shooting at squirrels with BB guns, climbing trees, figuring out how to make a clubhouse---our brains need that stuff to make all the connections from the various areas to each other, and the more "tied in" our brains are, the smarter we are.

So when you send kids out to shovel the snow, know you are only doing what is best for them! They'll soon be making snowballs, find some targets, and learn some geometry and physics in the process.

jim nj

Triggered by something I read.

At the last NY Worlds Fair one of the products being hyped for sale in multiple locations were devices to change your B&W TV into a color TV. Acetate sheets that you would tape in front of the screen of a TV. It had like three bands of color. Blue at the top as the top of the image was likely sky. Skintone in the middle as it was likely faces in close-up. I can't remember if the bottom third was green, signifying grass, or brown, signifying dirt.

Those suckers sold just as fast as the "Belgian" waffles.

That's an interesting thought. I believed that IQ was innate. The idea that it could be bound by regimentation is very interesting.

I'm not MENSA level, but close, and I was a free-range kid. The idea that IQ needs exercise and challenge never would have entered my mind.

In hind-sight I can imagine that to be exactly true.

If so I can imagine IQs getting exhausted in inner cities with no safe free-range opportunities.

Interesting, is IQ and experience inter-linked?

FOX Business this early morning is talking to another Brit, Michael Hewson, (Chief Market analyst at (CMC) about the specifics buried in the 600 pages of Teresa May's Brexit agreement and he says (Bolded) this which stunned me: (My transcript)

FOX Host: Some of the analysts are saying the Deal is dead in the water and she (Teresa May) does not survive this. Does she?

Hewson: It is difficult to see what the alternative is Lauren, and I think that's what an awful lot of the discussion, the political discussion, is really about. Now the way the argument has been framed is that 'It's this deal, or it's no Deal" on Brexit, and ultimately whoever is in charge of the negotiations, the same options remain on the table. So I don't think a change of Prime Minister is going to change the arithmetic around the possibilities available to the House of Commons when they come to vote next month.

FOX Host: So what's so bad in this near 600 page deal, that basically took them a year to put together and spelled out how they leave in just 4 months time, how they leave the European Union. What's so bad about it?

Hewson: It revolves around the Irish backstop and ultimately it's to do not so much with the transition arrangement, which is due to expire at the end of 2020, it's to do with what happens after that, and there is no expire date with respect to that, it's 20XX, which could conceivably mean that we could be tied in to a Customs Union, or a Transition phase, until 2099, and there is no unilateral way of getting out of that. Whatever the criticisms are of the Prime Minister, she has boxed herself in by ruling out a number of other options...

I recall that there was something called The Flynn Effect which was supposed to be that in every generation IQ's were going up about 3 points on average around the world.

If I understand you guys correctly it now appears that that Flynn Effect was either bogus or is being reversed, and our newer generations are now backsliding to lower IQ's than their predecessors. Sadly I think I see more evidence in general society for the backsliding claim than for the Flynn Effect.
