Michael Cohen claims to have chased a Trump Tower-type deal in Moscow until just before the Republican primary in 2016, despite previous testimony that he (and more to the point, Trump) dropped the effort before the Iowa primaries.
Possible explanations:
(a) Cohen is lying. Problematic, since there are (or ought to be) emails and phone records that overlap with his new story (e.g., a phone chat with an aide to Putin's press secretary).
(b) Trump has been lying. Possible!
(c) Fog of deal-making. Folks who have worked on the Big Deals, whether it be a real estate project, a book/movie deal, an elaborate tax scheme, or something else know that deals generally have the potential for a zombie status, where they aren't alive but no one can quite kill them. Why? Because there are generally many constituents, most of whom did not achieve whatever there current status is by taking "no" for an answer. Knowing nothing about it, we can be sure that if Trump has been pursuing a property idea for Moscow there are financiers, property owners, builders, prospective tenants, government officials and various middlemen that can see a payday for themselves if a deal happens. In fact, a day later the Times reports that Felix Sater, a grifter in Trump's orbit, had pushed a Moscow deal for years and never stopped.
So. Knowing Trump's reputation and impulsive and subject to giving weight to the last person with whom he spoke, it is entirely plausible that at some strategy session in January 2016 Trump agreed to cut the Moscow push and focus on the Presidential run. That may or may not have made business and political sense but it was of no help to intrepid dealmaker Sater, who soldiered on. Cohen took his calls, played along a bit, and may or may not have kept Trump in the loop. If Cohen can produce evidence of email exchanges or notable meetings with Trump on this topic, that will be one thing; if his evidence that he briefed Trump is that Cohen remembers giving him an updated elevator pitch while in Trump Tower or mentioned it in one of their many phone calls, well good luck with that - maybe it didn't happen, maybe it did and Trump brushed it off and promptly forgot.
As to whether this is evidence of collusion with the Russian government during the election, well, not in itself. For those excited by the possibility that Trump lied, well, wait until they learn about the daily sunrise (and the monthly full moon!).
ERRATA: Back when he surfaced I mocked the absurd notion that Team Trump would outsource their Moscow outreach to George Papadopoulos, who had no history of Russian contacts and had not been in Trump's orbit long enough for his coffee to get cold. That was obvious then and confirmed now - Trump's top people knew how to reach people in Moscow even without the help of Mr. P.
I am still waiting on photos of the Russian hookers.

Who paid for the RUSSIAN DOSSIER?
Quite simple really. Mueller needs to subpoena RODHAM, like with a cloth. HE then needs to ask her some pretty simple questions.
DID YOU PAY FOR A RUSSIAN DOSSIER to SMEAR MR TRUMP and sway the election with the help of RUSSIA?????
Pretty easy. Wouldn't take 2 years.
Posted by: GUS | November 30, 2018 at 12:14 PM
From what I've read it seems Cohen was pursuing the 'Russia' deal on his own self..pretty much.

Cohen first says "A". Cohen later says "B"--and "I lied when I said "A".
Well it's a mortal lock that Cohen lied at least one time---but which time?
And the odds are pretty good that he was lying both times and the objective truth is "C".
Posted by: Old Geezer | November 30, 2018 at 12:50 PM
I love your choices Tom Maguire. Play along with the charade. Pretend this investigation is real.
So (B) Trump may have lied. About what?
About the DOSSIER that he paid umpteen million for in an effort to sway the election with the help of RUSSIANS. This bull shit is laughable.

So if Mueller's out of control, why isn't Whitaker doing anything about it?
Possible answers why Whitaker isn't doing anything about Mueller:
1) Whitaker is a corrupt member of the Deep State Swamp just like Rosenstein.
2) Sleepy Matt is incompetent just like Sleepy Jeff.
3) Mueller isn't out of control.

I think you feel some sort of provincial pride in Sessions but the fact that his most obdurate defenders refuse to admit is that he wasn't doing the job to the satisfaction of DJT. I don't know why that makes him any different than Tillerson or Priebus other than length of time on the job.

And what are the odds that not a single one of them is anti-Trump politically and/or sympathetic to the Democrat/Anti-Trump cause?
If Trump were still pursuing the Trump Tower Moscow thing later in the game than he said he was, all one of those persons has to do is tell Meuller and/or a WaPo or NYT reporter and they have what they need, Cohen or no Cohen.

CH,
Spot on in re Sessions. A more honorable, loyalist to DJT would have resigned on the spot if he had to recuse himself from any probe regarless of the circumstances. I keep reading and hearing about Sessions is just genuine nice, Southern gentleman (whatever that means) when in fact, from his first day on the job has jeopardized the Trump presidency more than Mueller has.
Trump being a non-politician got some bad poliitical advice ever since he announced his bid. Its taking him 3+ years to learn his way and shed the likes of Preibus, Tillerson, Sessions, et.al. Then he decided to go the uniform route with Mattis, Kelly, Linke, just to surround himself with loyal soldiers. Not any presidency in my lifetime has been attacked from the outside as well as the inside like his has.
The outsiders now have the House, and the Senate with Romney, who will replace McRino like a T. But someone told Trump to make Whitaker the acting AG, instead of Rosenstein. He said he didn't know him, so who was it that gave him that idea? Rudy? I think it was Grassley whispering to Kelly.

Just received over the transom. Take it for the humor, at least.
Rebuilding New Orleans after Katrina often caused residents to be challenged to prove home titles back hundreds of years. That is because of community history stretching back over two centuries during which houses were passed along through generations of family, sometimes making it quite difficult to establish a paper trail of ownership.
A New Orleans lawyer sought a FHA rebuilding loan for a client. He was told the loan would be granted upon submission of satisfactory proof of ownership of the parcel of property as it was being offered as collateral. It took the lawyer 3 months, but he was able to prove title to the property dating back to 1803. After sending the information to the FHA, he received the following reply.
(Actual reply from FHA):
"Upon review of your letter adjoining your client's loan application, we note that the request is supported by an Abstract of Title. While we compliment the able manner in which you have prepared and presented the application, we must point out that you have only cleared title to the proposed collateral property back to 1803. Before final approval can be accorded, it will be necessary to clear the title back to its origin."
And here is the great letter the lawyer responded with:
(Actual response):
"Your letter regarding title in Case No.189156 has been received. I note that you wish to have proof of title extended further than the
206 years already covered in the present application. I was unaware that any educated person in this country, particularly those working with real property, would not know that Louisiana was purchased by the United States from France in 1803 , the year of origin of title identified in our application. For the edification of uninformed FHA bureaucrats, the title to the land prior to U.S. ownership was obtained from France, which had acquired it by Right of Conquest from Spain. The land came into the possession of Spain by Right of Discovery made in the year 1492 by a sea captain named Christopher Columbus, who had been granted the privilege of seeking a new route to India by the Spanish monarch, Queen Isabella. The good Queen Isabella, being a pious woman and almost as careful about titles as the FHA, took the precaution of securing the blessing of the Pope before she sold her jewels to finance Columbus 's expedition. Now the Pope, as I'm sure you may know, is the emissary of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and God, it is commonly accepted, created this world. Therefore, I believe it is safe to presume that God also made that part of the world called Louisiana. God, therefore, would be the owner of origin and His origins date back to before the beginning of time, the world as we know it, and the FHA. I hope you find God's original claim to be satisfactory. Now, may we have our damn reconstruction loan?"
The loan was immediately approved. Not only is this one of the best e-mails I have received, it is a great history.

Well Tom, you are misinterpreting my remarks, which seems to be a habit with you. I don't give a flying fuck what Trump would think or not think. I am only noting what an honorable, loyalist to Trump would/should/could do. You are only looking at Sessions through a completely different lense that I am. In fact, Sessions was weak from the minute he allowed a known weasel like Franken to get him to admit to a nothing burger diplomatic even meeting as if he committed treason. He should have immediately written a letter of resignation and hand-delivered to Trump.

Some nearby pedestrians were helpful, the police came and she was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. She may need surgery.

Apparently India is second to America in privately held firearms but at only 70 million. You can hide behind that many cows, surely.

Forgot to mention that Trump knows Macri because of his father Franco. Macri is a civil engineer and ran the Fiat/Peugot ops on Argentina for a while. I remember him as the Chair of Boca Juniors. He got his BSCE from the Pontifical University, where Pope Che got his Chem degree.
He also did his MBA in Columbia, and for awhile at Wharton (another Trump coincidence).

For all we know Sessions offered to resign a long time ago but Trump didn't accept it.
We do know that happened a year-and-a-half ago, unless you're playing "4D For All We Know"

Thank you for the citation. I was aware that Sessions had offered to resign which is one reason JiB's comments came across as horse shit. Sessions did do the honorable and loyal thing but for reasons we don't know Trump did not accept the resignation. I always interpreted it as kabuki theater and that Trump wasn't really upset with Sessions.

based on the twitter comments i guess it warrants not.

There is a difference between "offering to resign" and "resigning".
In the former, it transfers the burden of the decision onto the boss, and that in turn can blow up in the bosses face either way.
True honor would recognize that a situation will be untenable to his boss and his organization and that stepping down is the only honorable thing to do. Bonus points go if the employee was smart enough to see the conflict coming and not taking the job in the first place.

I have to agree with OL on this, and Sessions' (undated, if I remember correctly) resignation letter is evidence of it. The letter said he was asked to resign, putting the blame on Trump, and no where in the letter was there any statement to the effect that the President deserved an AG who wasn't recused or otherwise limited from carrying out his duties.
Speaking of which, I tendered my own resignation email today. :-)

If the right person had been placed in that job instead of Sessions, there may well not have been a SC; if there had been a SC, it would have been run by the AG and not some DAG; and for damn sure the other AG would have communicated and shared trust with his boss.
Trump's fault for picking the wrong man and for letting him stay past the second day of his recusal.
We are in the mess we are in because of those two mistakes.

Thanks, OL, for clarifying before I had to do it. Sometimes Tom R is too close to the trigger. If you are honorable, loyal, and know you fucking screwed up in front of Dipshit Al Franken. You resign. Period. No escape.
But Tom R is so much into idiotic 4D chess he can't see that the pawn captured the Bishop, and as a result the King is exposed, on all 4 levels.
