The Moving Finger writes, and, having writ, comes back decades later for a second look...
Very interesting piece on the reaction to Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, now 155 years old. As to "reality", it's hard to say. However, this bit of contemporaneous coverage of the Gettysburg ceremony from the NY Times archive is classic:
We devote a broadside of this morning's TIMES to the publication of two orations which we are sure will command the attention of the day. And not of this day only. Elaborate and finished discourses from two such men as EDWARD EVERETT and HENRY WARD BEECHER, upon topics of such great National interest as those they discuss, will not lightly be passed over, much less ignored altogether, by any intelligent citizen. Mr. EVERETT's theme is the "Battle of Gettysburgh," and the occasion is the dedication of that historic field as a National Cemetery. Mr. BEECHER's discourse was upon his recent tour in Great Britain -- his experiences there, and his views as regards British feeling and policy toward this country.
These orations from two masters of oratory, delivered on the same day, but upon such different topics -- one historical and domestic, the other practical and foreign -- admit of little comparison.
Yeah, they missed the lede. They also have some criticism of the Everett oratory as too weedy (NOT their word):
Mr. EVERETT's oration is, of course, classical and ornate in its diction, felicitous in illustration, well-wrought and strong in its logic, correct and explicit in its statement; in a word, it is eloquent, in the best sense of that much-abused term. His exordium is of great beauty; and his peroration is splendid. If we might offer a single point of criticism on the oration, it would be upon that part of it, constituting one-half of its body, which gives a narrative of the marches, manoeuvres, skirmishes and strategy of Gens. HOOKER and LEE, Gens. PLEASONTON and STUART, from the time at which the two armies left the opposite banks of the Rappahannock until they confronted each other on this side of the Potomac, and also the detailed account of the preliminaries of the battle, and of the action itself. Mr. EVERETT enters into a very minute statement of these things; and the elaborateness of the details, the large number of names, places and circumstances he has occasion to recall, will tend to confuse and repel those who are less familiar with the events than himself, and crowd out those "glittering generalities" which he or any other great orator might be expected mainly to deal in on such an occasion.
The Times also ran a version of Lincoln's speech as part of their coverage. Lincoln was dedicating a cemetery so I don't want to say he killed it, but the report notes frequent applause.

We simply do not discuss politics at family gatherings. Period. This has been the case since my GOP grandparents held it and my democrat dad attended.
Otherwise, I would have to comment that while my sister and I got to see President Trump for free, my democrat sister PAID quite a bit of money to go see Michelle Obama.

MM. My only sister will say she agrees no politics at family gatherings but she can’t help herself. As a result the only family gatherings we have are weddings and funerals
Posted by: Texas Liberty Gal | November 18, 2018 at 10:52 AM
The problem is, it is the different ideas that are the problem. You can treat them as respectfully as possible and unless you agree with them they will project their hateful moronosity on to you.
They are, by and large, exactly what they claim to hate [greedy, thoughtless, kinda dumb racists] and the people they claim superiority to are, by and large, none of those things.

How to destroy a brand in record time:

I know MM, Jack and I probably all know that there are other congregations and other ways to maintain our faith in the main point...but here on our political blog of friends it is fair to point out that the loss of what used to be be one of the main legs of the stool supporting the "way of life" that had been passed from generation to generation has, along with our schools and colleges, vanished right before our eyes.

Henry,
I stood about six feet away from Ike in the fall of ‘52. He and Mamie were doing a whistle stop tour through MT and my dad drove us to Livingston to see them. They stood on the rear vestibule of an old business car to give his speech. We were right under them standing on the track. My sis got a flower from Mamie’s bouquet and pressed it into a book.
Saw Ike once again 3-4 yrs later when he came out to commemorate the finishing of the McNary dam on the Columbia.

I would say it hasn't vanished; it's changed forms. And I would say the decline of mainline churches is partly a reflection of the culture, maybe even more than a cause.
I understand the sense of loss I think but the true core of the church and the only one that matters is impossible to lose; seek and ye shall find.

Michelle Obama’s Memoir Sells 725,000 Copies on First Day
Who are these strange alien beings?
My guess is that most of them are librarians, spending your tax money or that of the university, college or community college they work for. Daddy pointed out that 4 brand spankin'* new copies of Stormy Daniels' magnum opus were ostentatiously displayed at his local library last week. I seriously wonder how many people actually pay $35 or whatever they charge for these politicians' and quasi-celebrities' doorstops, no matter how much they like the subject. The other chunk would be liberal gift-givers--give it to someone who you think will be edified and improved by it, then borrow it so you can read it.
On the other hand, as MM has pointed out, there are people who pay $100 to hear Michelle Obama, Hillary and other such celestial beings talk, so I could be wrong.
*OK, maybe a poor word choice. But I left it in anyway.
Posted by: boatbuilder | November 18, 2018 at 12:53 PM
Iggy, you are missing my point, and so is BTDT.
Sure it is out there and seek and we might find it.
I would say that one can still seek and find a classic liberal education in our elite colleges too. But the "seekin" takes a whole lot more "seekin" and the "findin" is a whole lot harder that it should be. In a Bell Curve population, the portion of the population that will (even bother to) seek and will find is smaller than ever before. That's how I circle it back to political devolution.

Porchlight-
i'm of 2 minds on the fuss. one i can understand it and i can see where some might think it odd (all the way to sinister).
i recall i had a back and forth with henry, of all things about using my card at the gas pump. it had one of those screens and while i'm waiting there, sure enough i got bombarded by ads ... things i had bought previously! (it then went into a overly long-winded direction of using a store discount card and a card to buy groceries and how easily it would be to figure out possible health issues someone might have-diabetes being one of the more obvious)
i would suspect that the odd follower is a bot using a fake profile which is why i had asked about an abuse email or phone number-ask typepad whether the profile is real or fake and if it is in fact fake they can just delete it (but given how shitty this software is they'd probably delete JOM instead). everyone here clicking on it probably supercharged the bot to harvest even more!

It is true. My sister will buy Michelle's book and put it prominently in her living room.
However, I think most of those copies are purchased by librarians and people like Tom Steyer.

MT, when I was six, my mother was a huge JFK fan. I went to a rally he was holding in Commack, NY, outside the arena, and stood about five feet from the podium. There really was very little security.
Two years later, I met Nixon, who was campaigning with Nelson Rockefeller in Bellerose, NY. Nelson kissed my baby sister, something politicians used to do.

Boy, did you get what the Catholic Church is wrong, MM.
I transiently shared that feeling when the pedophile crisis first came to light back in the day, but the Holy Spirit hit me upside the head while I was doing dishes one night, so I'm going slap you across the face here:
Drop the "poor me" crap, and go to church---YOU are the church, not any priest, any bishop, or any pope.
You don't have to put any money in that collection basket, you don't even need to sit through any sermon if the message being relayed is Karl Marx's, not Jesus Christ's---but stop looking for someone else to do the heavy lifting for you.
Be part of the solution if you see a problem. Read Benedict and John Paul and Paul VI, partake of Mass and the sacraments, find people to help and some to help you in that parish.
You BE the Church Christ established.

"Sure it is out there and seek and we might find it."
The following riff takes off on how the previous wording strikes me as a vulnerable child of the Great Mystery, Tunkashila, GrandFather, God Almighty, and imperfect follower of the Word Made Flesh.
(I get your point, OL. Well said!)
It isn't "out there" in any sense as *IT* isn't an ordinary consumable, by way of the example, a quality liberal education.
For me "seeking" out there is an incorrect mission and inconsistent with my Purpose for being here (to be in service to others by revealing mysteries).
the more i demonstrate commitment to said purpose the more i am devoted to exploring my own heart/soul for answers. and, when another individual has ears to listen, i share.
but the key to this purpose? "Truth is within."
yes, one needs the reflection upon the outside world. one cannot just breathe in all the time.
but many people become frustrated by the opposite "only breathing out."
without reflection, truth is unattainable. but so are the other six aspects of the "Divine": Love, Life, Principle, Intelligence, Spirit, and Soul.
consumables have been politicized. there are specific practices which cannot. being within the Seven Aspects of the Great Mystery cannot be politicized nor "persecuted." The Christ demonstrated.
the "church" of Jesus the Christ was built upon "the rock" that is inside all of us--- our hearts, the metaphor for the "soul", the connector to The Spirit which remained behind.
therefore, the church is within.
Simon Peter was a man of great heart and a wealth of human contradictions. thus, i give you today's Roman Catholic Church--- consistent with the patterns of organized "temples" since the days of Solomon.
those who seek comfort in the material culture of the Roman Catholic Church will experience limitations and distractions.
on Sundays, when i want to feed my reflective soul, it is to sit quietly during the Consecration of the Sacrament, after having endured the usually warped interpretations of the Old Testament and the New, and the dispensation.
Whether sheltered in a lodge under a bearskin on a mountainside communing without human interference with The Great Mystery, or sitting quietly in wait for the Consecration and dispensation---- it is the same inside job.
i do such things in order for The Great I AM to recognize me his son by recognizing The Great I AM, such as IT is; I AM the one who desires to be pleasing to him by doing my best to LOVE and follow his Great Law of Cause and Effect.
i can get along well without the specific brand of fellowship offered here in the local parishes. fellowship exists all around me. IT is the Walk, or the Way.
That is an inside job with outward demonstration of the Seven Aspects (the Seven Directions we observe in the sweat lodge prayer ceremony).
That's all.
Have a great Sun-day.
Kev

the biggest obstacle to any Roman Catholic attempt at fellowship is PRIDE, which blinds most in a way of creating an US vs THEM type of snobbery i find common in every parish i've ever haunted.
gives me lots of opps not to judge etc---- but it definitely doesn't allow them to elevate their eyes, go forth, and to sin no more.

Because they are ignorant, uneducated, illiterate, spoiled children who have no understanding at all of history or of human nature despite the hundreds of thousands of dollars their parents (and us taxpayers via gov’t subsidized loans) spent on their schooling.
If they understood ANYTHING of life beyond the infantile temper tantrums they’ve clearly never grown out of, they’d know that the mob ALWAYS turns on the very people who ginned it up. Inevitably.

rich,
Like you said, the followers are just bots, I think. No special dangers there.
I'm not saying the internet isn't full of privacy risks. I'm just saying TypePad registration doesn't carry any more risk than your average internet activity and likely less since it doesn't involve money changing hands and doesn't require you to disclose or confirm your identity.
Your smartphone is likely more dangerous to your privacy than TypePad.

Read Iggy’s 12:27 -- The Picasso Problem.
The answer is only as good as the question -- or, "the world should never again put a bunch of United Nations pluted bloatocrats in charge of anything to do with science."

I am going to say it.
The Democrat House Majority is FAKE. In race after race, Democrats who were losing on ED surged into the lead with completely out of proportion "late" votes in their favor.
We have just witnessed MASSIVE VOTE FRAUD. The Democrat Majority is ILLEGITIMATE.

Michael, thanks for posting the link to the ND band and tip re: time to find Wondergirl.
I was too lazy to find it this morning when I was doing catch up.
So fun to see someone's baby in RL.

Asked my wife what she thought about the Browns interest in Condi Rice as head coach.
She replied, “I’m not sure she knows enough about X’s and O’s. She would probably be a better fit as general manager.
Gotta love that girl!

Trump’s Twitter “typo” is fantastic.
Yesterday’s Twitter video of the squirrel testing the dog reminded me of Trump and the MFM. Didn’t hurt that the squirrel was orange. Here’s the link: https://mobile.twitter.com/INTEGRITY_4U/status/1063564227372306432
Pin,
Yes, those are my mitts on the Stanley Cup. That was Sept 2015. It is surprisingly light. NHL staff will not allow hoisting the Cup overhead.

Our parish administrator recently asked our congregation that in addition to our weekly offering, we also help physically maintaining the property. I had remained silent up til then but could no longer.
We can request predated envelopes for the collection plate offerings and after much consideration, I placed the check with a note inside the envelope notifying the treasurer that my weekly offering would now be cut in half because I will no longer pay for lawsuits that these creeps caused. I haven't heard a peep yet.
I ain't throwing the baby out with the bathwater and in the end we know how it turns out, the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail.
I'm with Anonomom, pray for us!
