Yes on the pensions, Cap'n. I would honor those for which the current taxpayers paid cash to fund in that current year when they made the promise. I would not honor a pie in the sky promise made by politicians two decades earlier but which those politicians did not fund in real time. "Not funded with cash-cash? Then it does not exist." "Cash-Cash" is different from government IOUs sitting in the SS or a Medicare Trust Fund Cookie Jar.

As to GOP v Dems on this stuff, there is a reason we named them the Uniparty.

Jim,

The problem is that there's a wide range of behaviors about saving for the future and it's not a good look for a country to have a bunch of destitute codgers on the street. Like San Francisco everywhere.

There are still some shocking demographic situations that really should be addressed. Black participation rates in 401K plans are, or at least they were when I last checked, unbelievably low even among the highly educated. This was a "disparate impact" I was hoping the Bathhouse Rat or his chinless wingman might address in his eight year reign of error.

Narciso79

I think last night's NBC broadcasts suggest they should deploy the ed 209s

henry

deploy the ed 209s

The mr ed beta versions would be an improvement.

Old Lurker

Cap'n trouble is we are stuck between two bookends, one representing a world where people are responsible for themselves and their families (and their neighbors are a safety net when deserved), and the other where the Government is responsible and the individuals are not.

Since Wilson we have been hurtling from one toward the other and going back requires a full stop then a change in direction, but proceeding ahead is so much easier.

Darwin had an answer but it does not get many votes.

OMG! Miss Marple, you posted this twitter link on the previous jom thread. I couldn't believe it, because instead of laughing at the billionaire's husband, the Native American, and the rich Ocasia-Cortex, it creeped me out because I'd just binge watched the British "Bodyguard" about bombings, conspiracies in the government, and organized crime.

Have any of you watched the show? It's on Netflix, and it is good. Honestly, I watched it until about 3 a.m.

So, when I saw each one of the three democrats all in a kitchen (ordinary, middle-class kitchen) pretending to cook, I just shook my head. They're trying to appear 'normal' so that 'normies', ordinary people think 'why they're just like me' -- that's how they've lulled so many LIVs.

Instead of laughing at them, I thought "who do they report to? who plans these little homey videos? who is at the top of their web?"

https://twitter.com/Bmac0507/status/1079900368744546304

You guys have got to watch that Netflix show. Maybe you've discussed it before, but I haven't been on here much lately.

MM, I know I am repeating myself, but Trump's unending open border tweets do not sway any opponents and are by now boring to (some of) his base. He risks so much repetition that even (some of) his supporters might start thinking about strawberries.

Neo

I've been thinking a lot about why Trump didn't release the 1st FISA warrant.

Considering, there has been no noise from any federal judge about getting snookered, the noise about other means of getting the warrant may have the key.

It seems the USAG can sign a FISA warrant in place of a judge in certain cases, but we've heard nothing about anything like that about Lorretta Lynch. On the other hand, I've heard that you could have gotten a FISA warrant if ... it was signed by President Obama

Captain Hate

Trump's unending open border tweets do not sway any opponents

I'm not sure about that. I got a phone call from one of my youngest daughter's friends who is a converted DJT fan. I don't think he represents an insignificant percentage.

Narciso79

The short answer is they dont think they've been conned, there is always a smokescreen that runs through every prestige publication, an excuse for every gap we've discovered about fusion.

Narciso79

So mannie Macron thinks he can bully a fmr paratrooper like bolsanaro out of a trade deal with the us.

Captain Hate

Or by John "Above Politics" Roberts who approved every FISA judge.

MissMarple2

The problem is that there's a wide range of behaviors about saving for the future and it's not a good look for a country to have a bunch of destitute codgers on the street.

For sure, but as I'm sure you realize, that would justify at most some kind of genuine savings plan (as opposed to the 'pay-as-you-go' ponzi crap) that responsible people could opt out of by setting aside enough money on their own.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Medicare is classified under Herb Stein's "if something can't go on forever..." aphorism.
In the meantime, however, its most insidious effect is the distortion and harm it causes private insurance.
As it continues to squeeze the cost and every other balloon on its end because of its massive power, those on the private side see their costs and premiums balloon as their service declines. And as always, progs try to ride to the rescue with more big government to cure a problem their big government created in the first place.

matt - deplore me if you must

Macron just went full retard on the Gilles Jaunes calling them names. Not smart. I think anyone with a car is going to be pissed off now. Raising taxes to appease the Global Warming elite is bound to be unpopular.

The WSJ had an article on some yoyo who bought up a Borneo rainforest in order to sell carbon credits, which 5 years on has blown up in his face.

But at least he can go see the orangutans now.

Funny how the blowback is mounting around the world.

Happy New Year to all! May you have good health, happiness and success in all you do!

I have a sister on Medicare who complains that a lot of doctors don't accept it, and she's often unhappy with the ones that do. Though she's a chronic complainer, so who knows.

So far, so good for me on Medicare. My primary care guy is an employee of the OSU medical system, like Jr., and coincidentally one of Jr.'s former professors.

I don't think anyone can practice inside the University system and not take Medicare.

Between him and my son, I am confident I can get the right referrals if/when I need to see specialists.

Interestingly, my wife's insurance carrier (BCBS) was just dropped by the best private hospital in Columbus. Private insurance is no guarantee that you can pick your service providers.

The NYT doesn't like it. (I wonder why. Ha!)

It's by Jed Mercurio, who did The Line of Duty series that is so good. Think amazon carries it.

Anyway, Bodyguard is entertaining -- you watch as corruption oozes through British national security, the police, organized crime, and is often carried out by jihadi accomplices.

Also, Jane, which Prime The Whole Truth video did you watch last night? When I checked, one with Keanu Reeves popped up -- is this the one? I thought when I read your post that maybe it was on history or was a documentary (don't know why I thought that -- also David Baldacci's name came up in search and I wondered if they'd made a movie of that book, haven't had time to go back and check.)

Ig is 1000% correct about Medicare. It is the root of our insane medical costs because it destroyed the market.

And the death panels already exist. Not paying for a rehospitalization within thirty days for Medicare patients with a discharge diagnosis of heart failure or pneumonia caused an increase in deaths for people with those diagnoses since that regulation came into effect.

This is a pretty good redefinition of Empires and how ours is the odd man out. As usual, he splashes cold water on where we’re headed.

Some of his commenters are a little off the mark, but some are as thoughtful as our gang here. One suggested that we just shoot out the windows in the FIB/DoJ buildings. That would get their attention.

On a separate note, re anniversaries, last night was the 54th anniversary of our first date. It was at a buddy’s Mom’s place. My bud also had a first date there and they are still married, too. The only bad thing was that I brought a Dylan album to play and my bud’s older brothers almost threw me out! Heh. They were hard core C&W dudes.

Great news, anonamom!

Joan, I also liked Bodyguard. Very well done, and considering it was a BBC production, relatively neutral politically.

joan

Yes, jimmyk, I was (almost) stunned by that production going forward. Though Jed Mercurio, in his amazon Line of Duty, didn't pull any punches about corruption in the UK police.

I had forgotten about Bodyguard, had just read a brief mention online some weeks ago, and last night wanted something and it popped up on Netflix. After I started watching and then heard Keeley Hawes voice, I wondered if it was Mercurio's. I love her voice (and imagine she's as liberal as a person could get) --really liked her in Line of Duty. She starred in that popular science fiction Dr. Who for a year or so. She's married to Michael MacFayden. Think they met in Spooks (wasn't that our MI-5?)

Love this bit. Reporter asks if they are surprised that Ultima Thule is a sort of bowling pin or peanut shaped elongated object and one of the NASA scientists replies that no they actually are not surprised. He replies:

In fact, most of the small bodies in the Solar System are highly elongated, because they just don't have enough mass to force themselves into an almost perfect sphere. They kind of come together from the material from which the Solar System formed into these clumpy things, and that's what you saw for example in the case of Comet (garbled), the target of the Rosetta Mission. It was a bi-lobate object, and that's common among the cometary nuclei and among the asteroids, so in fact we were expecting something along these lines.

The Shape of Ultima Thule

daddy

The Lead NASA Scientist reports that we won't get the highest pan-chromatic images (meaning the most precise images with certifiably valid colors) until about February. He says they will give us their best defined images prior to that and they will overlay color from their best evidence based guesses, but February is when that will be resolved by all the received data.

Jim Eagle

One of the panelists called it a bowling pin:)

daddy

Another good logical point of common sense I wouldn't have thought of off the top. The NASA guy says that one of the reasons for the delay, besides the 6 and a half hour time for the signal traveling at Light speed between the spacecraft and earth, is that since they had such a small window during the approach and fly by, that they had to squeeze in every bit of investigation of Ultima Thule that they could during that period, so all their instruments were focused on Ultima Thule, not on aiming an antenna back towards Earth. That aiming back towards earth and then firing off data would occur after the spacecraft took every possible measurement it could during that critical fly by period.

I love the common sense intelligence of these guys.

daddy

Reporter asks a good question: "The whole idea of this mission was to study something really primitive, really old. Does knowing the rough shape, this bowling pin shape, tell you anything about the conditions in the Kuiper Belt or the proto-planetary disk?"

Scientist: Yeah! It certainly does. How these objects come together, how they're built up, either from growing material, clumps of material that come together, versus being collisional fragments for example. We hope to be able to tell that from looking at these details on the images, but in addition just the number of features on the surface, the number of craters. The thing has been sitting out at a large distance from the sun for 4.6 Billion Years. You know, the surface could have been pummeled by meteoritic material, over the age of the Solar System, and producing craters, or not. If this object for some reason has a process that causes the surface to change over time it would wipe out these craters for example if they were there. But anyway these are the kinds of things that will tell us what was going on in the early Solar System.

Question: How can you determine its mass?

Scientist: The easiest way to get Ultima's mass is if we can detect satellites and we can determine their orbits, and from that we can use Kepler's laws to directly determine the mass, but if it doesn't have satellites we really don't have a direct way of being able to do that. We do expect to be able to determine its shape entirely, and with pretty good accuracy, so we'll get it's volume, but we wont be able to determine it's mass unless it has a satellite because we flew by it at a distance that its gravity just didn't bend the spacecraft's trajectory enough to be detectable, even with these exquisite tracking techniques that NASA has.

That's mindblowing. I'm having a ball listening to this. Once again, why aren't these reporters in the White House Press Pool?

MissMarple2

https://pjmedia.com/michaelwalsh/new-years-resolutions-for-the-white-house/

daddy

Reporter asks a "when" question and the lead Scientist replies that it took 9 years to sell the project, 5 years to build it, and 12 years to get it launched and at destination, so it's a "Delayed Gratification" project:)

Says that some disturbance in the Solar Corona is going to prevent radio signals for a while next week, but following that cosmic speedbump in mid January they'll re-pick-up the data transmission feeds again. He said they have an order of priority they want to get downloaded due to highest priority scientific objectives:

1) Mapping the Surface
2) Looking for satellites and rings
3) Mapping the surface Composition
Then he says that they map the surface a dozen different ways and he goes into that. The above will all start to come in mid January after the Corona problem ceases.
The other stuff like
4) Radar experiments and a ton of other things.

He says they are still worried the spacecraft could crap out on them so they want the high-pri data delivered first, so stand by for "Delayed Gratification."

Jim Eagle

Did I speak too soon? If that onside kick had worked, I would be eating crow for a year.

Jim Eagle

Jim Eagle

daddy,

According to the DOE specs on the reactor, New Horizon has enough fuel for 15-20 years of further missions. I think we are going to see even more interesting discoveries.

daddy

I also loved that the chief Scientist reiterated a number of times that this project was a United States of America project and how great it was to live in a country like America that could pull together and produce things like this. Besides my opinion that he actually believes that, I think he is pointedly making that point about America and American greatness as pushback against those Hollywood jackasses who made the Neil Armstrong movie and intentionally removed America and the American flag in their rewrite of history.

Press conference ended. Catch-up begins.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo Pardons 22 Illegals to Prevent Their Deportation

The pardons were mostly for drug possession, but drug dealing, arson and robbery as well. One of the men Cuomo pardoned set “an acquaintance’s car on fire as an act of mischief,” according to the governor’s statement.

Cuomo also used the statement to trash President Donald Trump.

“While President Trump shuts down the federal government over his obsession with keeping immigrants out, New York stands strong in our support for immigrant communities,” Governor Cuomo said. “These actions will help keep immigrant families together and take a critical step toward a more just, more fair and more compassionate New York.”

The statement explained that the goal was to “remove the barriers that their criminal records present to their immigration status. Some are facing deportation, while others wish to be able to participate in their communities as citizens of the country they call home. In each case, a pardon will make immigration-related relief possible, if not automatic.”

Cuomo additionally commuted the sentences of seven illegal immigrants that are currently imprisoned.
