daddy

Good Morning!

Just clicked on the TV and it was on the channel that had on that old soap, "The Young And The Restless." It was the old evil cool guy (Vincent?) but the young blonde bombshell shedding tears over him was not old Nina, who has obviously put on a ton of weight since I saw it last some 20 years back. The blonde crying her eyes out was the young one in blue to his left in this shot:
It's good to see old friends. Victor I think was in jail.

And who knows what's going on nowadays with The Bold and The Beautiful?

Not me:(

Jim Eagle

daddy,

When I was in university (the early 60's:), the Cincy student union had the largest tv at that time (21"??) that was constantly tuned into soaps. It became a big deall to have no classes when The Guiding Light came on.

FYI, the will pick a new name for Ultima Thule sometime this month so it agrees with the International Astronomical Union guidelines. I like "Serling" - since it represents the Outer Limits.

Hi Jack.

I recall 20 years back that in Dubai they really liked the Bold and the Beautiful since those 2 dames were so good looking, so you could always catch replays of that on local TV all hours of the day.

Speaking of replays I have just woken up, freshened up the instant coffee cup and have just tuned into the opening remarks from todays https://www.nasa.gov/nasalive">the Ultima Thule replay. For those who missed it:

Scientist: ...What this spacecraft and what this Team accomplished is unprecedented. The object that we rendezvoused with at midnight on New Years Day wasn't even known until the summer of 2014, and we had to use advanced tools, like the Easa-Gaia(sp) Observatory and The Hubble Space telescope to get it's orbit well enough to intercept it, at a precise place and moment in time, at a peed of 32,000 miles and hour. And it's really only like the size of something like Washington DC, and it's about as reflective as garden variety dirt, and it's illuminated by a sun that's 1,900 times fainter that it is outside on a sunny day here on the earth...the spectacular results we're about to show you, and everything we're about to show you is just the tip of the iceberg. We have far less than 1 percent of the Data that's stored aboard the solid state recorders on New Horizons already down on the ground...

James D.

Daddy, the girl in blue crying over Victor is his daughter. Abby Newman (her mother stole Victor’s sperm from the sperm bank or wherever and impregnated herwelf with it a while back).

Jim Eagle

daddy,

They knew the shape was contact-binary back in 2017 from 3 observed occulations. Some were seen in Africa, South America and the Pacific. Different pass throughs. It was the light curve that confused them as to whether they were correct.

Back in the Luke & Laura days, some of the ladies of Quad C used to watch soaps in my dorm-room 'cause I had a nice TV. I got to know the stories and was always amazed that you could skip weeks or months and still know everything that was going on the next time you tuned in. Very slow-moving plot lines, at least in those days.

He says they were 2 completely separate objects that somehow became joined together, and the next guys will try to explain that. I have not done catch-up so apologies in advance if this has already been transcribed. He calls it a "contact binary", two completely separate objects that are now joined together...

The next scientist explains how they now believe they fully understand the rotation period and the "light curve" of the object. It rotates about every 15 hours but in a plane sort of parallel to us which accounts for no diminution of the the reflected light we are observing as it rotates.

More genius science observations:

...I also want to tell you about the reflectivity of the surface (Shows a colored pic highlighting brighter versus darker areas) ...the light from Ultima is reflected from the Sun and we can see different brightness variations depending on how bright the surface is. The brightest areas reflect 13 percent of the incident sunlight, and the darkest areas reflect only 6 percent of the incident sunlight. Like Alan told you before, this is very dark, this is like potting soil, so this is a very dark object, but it shows significant variation, a factor of 2 in brightness across it's surface. One very interesting feature is the neck that connects the 2 objects in the contact binary. It's one of the brightest regions with a brightness reading of 13 percent, and that is consistent with having fine grained material that has settled there due to gravity and slope...

The Snowman wears a scarf!

Now a Brit Team member Scientist, an expert on color: We had a rough color from Hubbell but now we can definitively say that Ultima Thule is red. Yay! (Big applause:)

...this color is consistent with other objects in its class, its a cold classical type of object...the neck region is not only brighter but is also less red.

Says that they will be receiving downloads of other data sets for the next 2 years enhancing their understanding of the color differences on the object in minute scale , and that that will enhance understanding of how the object formed. She then says that the color of Ultima Thule is similar to the northern region of Pluto's Moon Charon, tho' it is noticeably smaller and darker than Charon.

Mitt Romney Says He May Not Endorse Trump In 2020

Tapper asked Romney about his decision to accept President Trump's endorsement when he was running for Senate in Utah. After briefly equivocating about his decision to accept Trump's endorsement and the implicit hypocrisy in his criticisms of Trump's "character" (while supporting almost every one of the president's major policy decisions except for withdrawing troops from Syria), Romney suggested that he might not endorse President Trump when he seeks his second term.

"He was endorsing me I wasn't endorsing him..and I haven't decided who I will be endorsing in 2020. I'm going to wait and see what the alternatives are."

Extraneus

So far WaPo and CNN. Places where Mitt can feel comfortable.

Extraneus
So how does Romney think Trump can improve?

"It's important for a president to demonstrate the qualities of forthrightness and honesty and integrity...while I agree with him on policy front...there are areas relating to character that I think he could do a better job on."

Will Romney become the new Jeff Flake?

"I don't intend to be a daily commentator to be someone who's walking through the Senate and looking for the nearest camera...but if there's a matter of great significance, I'll speak out on that."

What kind of candidate does America want?

"I know what my principles are and what is right for the country...people are angry and resentful and they want to see leaders who will unite us and can push through those things. there are so many things they want to see us do that these things get in the way."

Were you surprised that your niece criticized you?

"She's the chairwoman of the Republican Party. She has a responsibility...and I respect that. She's loyal to the president and she's doing what she thinks is best for him and for the party."

Do you plan to oppose Trump's policies?

"I will support those positions that I agree with and I will oppose things I disagree with. But I don't think you would go to Washington to cut off your nose to spite your face. I'll vote with my conscience and not with his. [In other words, no.]"

Why do you oppose Trump's decision to pull US troops out of Syria?

"The reason that we're involved in the world is to make the world safer and make us safer...having a stable world where we can conduct trade is good for us and for the world...we're in Syria with a very small footprint to help our allies and to provide some stability so Turkey, or Russia or the Iranians don't rush in and slaughter people...so pulling out on a haphazard basis without getting the input from General Mattis is something I find very troubling."

New guy says that in the very latest image we are seeing about 150 yards per pixel.

(God Bless America---no Meters!)

says Ultima Thule has a mottled appearance but then puts up a slide pointing out the areas of light and darker areas and says the yellow arrows point to brighter features which are often circular, dot like, as opposed to being elongate. That is in contrast to the darker regions which the red arrows point to which often seem to form elongate patches or streaks...There is this remarkable neck feature...which is less red...appears to be higher albedo, umm and that could be due to 2 processes, the higher Albedo could be due to the fact that material has collected down there, small particles, and smaller particle material is often brighter just by it's nature of being small, or alternatively it could be the consequence of different composition. We'll be able to have answers to those questions very soon!

...Presently in the images we have available there are no obvious impact craters. There are suggestions of hills and ridges...but all these features are being inferred from essentially no real direct topography yet...So let's talk about what we can say about it's topography...

...it's interesting that looking at these profiles there's a suggestion that we could be easily seeing positive topography as well as negative topography, and by that I mean we might find that Ultima Thule is more dominated by or has a substantial component of hills and ridges as opposed to just craters.

Now he goes into a neat discussion of the heights and gradients of the slope just around the neck of the snowman with interesting graphs and images.

"The neck corresponds to the steepest slopes."

He continues saying that if you were a particle sitting on Ultima Thule...at one of the 2 locations at the neck, where the 2 lobes come together, ...you're at an angle so high that you'll basically start rolling, so perhaps an explanation for the bright band we see that connects the 2 lobes is in fact loose material which has simply rolled down to this local circular ravine, for lack of a better way to conceptualize it, which makes up the connection between the 2 lobes.

Here's the graphic put out by NASA that they believe explains how these 2 objects got together.

Ex,

In fact, that is how it formed. From little bits of space junk spiraling around in no gravit, hitting each other, cohesing, and finaly developing over a billion or more years a structure like you see as Ultima Thule.

I think it is fascinating and another part of the riddle of how our Earth was formed and why we have low gravity, water, atmosphere, seasons, vegatiation, etc. and no other planet in our galaxy has, or has not been discovered yet.

Extraneus

So Marlene was right.

Jim Eagle

Pin,

They don't, and that is why the New Horizon craft with 15-20 years of fuel left is cruising to more distant rocks of the universe. More to come.

lyle

And to think at times in the distant mists of JOM past, I got shit from a few when I said how much I despised John Sidney McShitstain...

daddy

Now he is discussing the impact speed of just a few miles an hour at most. I think I saw that mentioned above.

Scientist: ...and I want to bring to everybodies attention that this coming together of the 2 lobes would be at an extremely slow speed. It'd be like maybe one or a few Miles an hour, the speed at which you might park your car in a parking space, or if you had a collision with another car at those speeds you may not even bother to fill out the Insurance forms. (Big laughs) So the real bottom line is that both the nearly spherical shapes of the individual lobes, as well as the fact that the 2 lobes come together so perfectly, basically without any collisional damage, hence no need for Insurance, is a strong indication that it is all formed through accretion, in accretionary processes, as opposed to some other mechanism, so what we are looking at is basically the first planetesimals...these first planetesimals, where they were commonly found in the inner Solar System, came together to form the planets and the moons and everything else we see...These are the only remaining basic building blocks in the back yard of the Solar System that we can see, that everything else that we live on or see through our telescopes, or that we visit with our spacecraft, are formed from. So I think we should think of New Horizons as a Time Machine, a way back machine, that we set to time Zero, and that has brought us back to the very beginning of Solar System History, to a place where we can observe the most primordial building blocks of the planets.

Momma just texted that she got an estimate for her collision with the moose last week: $4,000. Yikes! Thank the god's for Insurance.
