Brit PM Theresa May bails out on a Parliamentary vote on her Brexit deal. What next? Who knows!
DEAD POOL UPDATE: it seems like only a week ago we were contemplating the G-20 meeting in Paris, but really it was a week and a half. I can't handicap all twenty of these world leaders, but among Merkel, Macron, May and Trump, Merkel was already headed out the door (as of 2021) at the meeting. But she clings to power today, as do the other three leaders in the Dead Pool.
So who will be the first among this group (or the larger G-20) to be shown the door? Theresa May virtually any day? Likely! Macron next spring or sooner? Not so fast - as President of France (NOT Prime Minister) he was elected to serve a five year term in 2017. The Assembly would normally serve until then as well. So barring a complete collapse of the governing structure, Macron should be able to stay until 2022, even if events force him to replace his current PM leading a new coalition.
Trump may be impeached by House Democrats for having a bad comb-over but nothing revealed so far suggests there will be 67 votes in the Senate for removal. OTOH, unless re-elected Jan 20, 2021 is his end date.
So who lasts the longest? It seems weird that Macron, who may be the least popular of the four and with a country beset by riots, is most likely to be in office in 2022. PredictIt bettors say May is the next European leader to go (69% probability) followed by Macron (20%).
OK, my calls: May is the next to go, Trump will outlast the other three.
Europe is going to hell!
Momto2, If I could nominate you for Sainthood, I would. Happy Anniversary.

Macron speaking right now to the French. A bit of a transcript from the translator of FOX Business:
Macron: Last weeks protests in France have troubled the Nation. There was legitimate (garbled) claims, however there is a chain of inadmissible violence This violence will not benefit anyone. We have seen everything; opportunists playing games to take advantage of the Demonstrations. We saw everything. We saw the Irresponsible actions of some politicians to look for disorder. No anger justifies that we attack Police Officers, burning Buildings, burning properties. Freedom is understandable. Everyone is able to express his or her opinion however we need to share our opinions in a responsible way, however when there's violence, freedom stops. Calm and Republican order is what needs to be restored. We'll do everything to restore it. We will not achieve anything unless and until we have order. I have given to the Govt the most rigorous instructions. In the beginning of all this I won't forget that there is anger. There is worry. There's indignation. All of us, or most of us in France, feel this. However I cannot accept the unexceptable behavior. The anger was about the Gas Tax and the Prime Minister responded to that by cancelling the Gas Tax. I feel the anger. Give us another chance...

Speaking to an Ivy League audience at the new U.S. Climate Action Center in Poland, Steyer argued that winning the climate change debate would require a sea change in rules and tactics.
Such as, perhaps, refraining from flying to Poland with your Ivy League acolytes for dedications of new propaganda facilities?
Probably not.

Macron: ...Give a chance for the couple that has to wake up in the morning and travel for a couple of hours to work for away from their home. Give a chance for the single woman, the single mother, the chance to make ends meet. We have to take this into account. We have to take into account the Retired, who have broke their lives and worked all their lives and cannot make ends meet. This fragile situation puts us in a handicapped situation. These people have been suffering, and not since yesterday. Since a long time ago. We have seen this, and this is happening right now as if we were forgetting about all these people. 40 years of anger, of worry, is what is taking place, is what is happening right now. A democratic world(?), a democratic state of mind is really being destroyed, and barricades have been built to deface and to demolish our democracy. We didn't know for about a year and a half how to answer this crisis, and I'm taking my part of the responsibility. M Maybe in the beginning I gave the impression that I didn't care, but that's not true. Maybe I have hurt some of you. That was not my intention. I want to be clear tonight. If I have fought in order to able to shape the political system in place it is precisely because I believe in this country that I love, and my legitimacy. I don't take it out of any title or any party. I get my legitimacy and my rights from you. I want to find a way to get out of this together. I want this for France because this is our pact. Through history we have always opened unexplored ways and unexplored methods. I don't want to be divided. I don't want the french people to be divided. This is a country of Law. Friendship is what must united this country.. I want this. It is precisely because of this that I ran for Office....

Macron:...to reconcile all the french people. Because 1st of all I'm going to decree today an Economic and a Social State of Emergency. We have to work together, and we have to reinvent and restore the Educational System in order for the people to be able to find work after they graduate. This educational reform is important. We want a France where we can live with dignity from one's work. You have waited for too long. This has taken too long, and I am going to act very fast in order to resolve this problem. I'm going to ask the Govt to follow up, to make sure that all the students when they graduate that they are able to find work. The salaries must be equivalent, must be dignified. I want to fix all the injustice that has taken place over time. Overtime must be paid without any additional taxes. I am ordering an end of year bonus for all employees without any taxes...

It still gets me that Macron wants to shut down 20% of France's nuclear plants, while at the same time he is promising all these unfunded payouts for pensioners, students, workers, etc.
It is my understanding that France regularly sells their excess power generated by those nuclear plants to their neighbors. Why would he decide to eliminate such a sensible, non-carbon producing source of income, at the same time he is promising spend tons more to quell the mass demonstrations? I must be missing something. Is there some sensible reason to shut those plants down besides Virtue Signalling?"
As for the French Nuke Agency, Framatome. When Momma worked there, she was doing eddy-current analysis on their steam generators. She said that one of the things she liked about the French Model was that all of the plants were built on the same model, so basically the electronic signatures she was setting her equipment up to search for cracks, breaks, structural integrity, etc, were the same in every plant in the country. It was sensible and made her job easy, unlike over here where we have so many different types of units, and even different engineered types of units at the same facility. Granted she's been absent from Framatome for 20 years now, but she was unaware of any major problems facing any of their plants in particular, so she scratches her head as to what benefit is gained by shutting down 20% of their plants.
Jack and MannyT I'm sure have input on this beyond what I know secondhand, but I'd love to know if I'm missing something.

Kavanaugh was DJT's good faith effort to get the RINOs on board. It got GWB to open his yap about something, short of his father's death. Levin warned about the extensive lobbying by the Bush mafia for Kavanaugh pre nomination.
He will probably be a net positive but nobody can state they weren't warned about him regarding decisions like today's if they knew who to listen to.

daddy,
Per your comments last night on black holes, have you ever run across Halton Arp? He is my hero in the astrophysics/astronomy realm. He was the first to catalog various newly discovered galaxies back in the early 60s.
Since then he has asked a lot of impertinent questions like, how do we know that all red shift is velocity? And with that noticing that newly discovered Quasars tend to show up in pairs on opposite sides of certain classes of energetic galaxies. Oh, and by the way, if you look further out along a trajectory line beyond the polar axis of the galaxy, you can see progressively older galaxies, in pairs maturing from their Quasar origins. Now, think about how many ox's that has gored. Did I mention I love that guy?
Posted by: Manuel Transmission | December 10, 2018 at 03:40 PM
That Kavanaugh vote was no surprise to me.
I have been pulling back from the narrow focus that DJT can or is even able to fix our mess, rather he is just one man doing more than most to head us in a better direction.
But we got ourselves into a really deep hole, and there are no silver bullet solutions. We would think we died and went to heaven if we got two steps forward for each step back. We will be lucky to get 1.1 for 1 so we had best calibrate our expectations, hopes and dreams accordingly.

Handicapping Macron's survival is an interesting task. Despite the fact that he acknowledged that some people in rural France have to drive an hour or so to get to work, he's making gasoline very expensive. When the peasants can't drive, they'll have to go to horse or oxen pulled tumbrels. And when tumbrels go in to Paris, they usually carry the rulers away.

daddy, re the nuke plants, all I know is that my neighbors down the hall in my department at ginormous research developed a lot of the those inspection techniques. The only one I recall directly was the ability to spot the squeezing of the cooling tubes in the heat exchanges where the tubes went through the stabilization header plates. They would build up corrosion on the outside of the tube until they were shrunk down to no flow through the tube. We had some great ultrasonic guys in our group, but I rarely worked on their projects.
The coolest thing that was just starting out in the late 70s was acoustic emissions. You could put ultrasonic sensors on a structure and when the structure developed micro cracks, each incremental crack extension would emit little ultrasonic waves that the sensors would pick up and then be tracked back to the source sort of like the cellphone tracking between cell towers. I assume that's being used in nuke plants, too.

Daddy, Framatome is not the governmental agency but is a government owned company. Originally intended to be a means of building Westinghouse PWR NSSS’s under license. They’ve now expanded into newer tech from Siemens.
Yes, the French approach was to standardize.
Only systemic issue I recall was steam generator tube issues that required sleeving or plugging, and eventual replacement. The French plants are getting old, and I’ve lost track of what needs to be done by way of life extension. No particular reason other than environmental virtue signaling to close them, so far as I know.

People, we knew this about Kavanaugh. He was the “establishment” pick.
If he’s still (as he’s showing so far on the bench) an establishment squish after what was done to him (and with plenty of his establishment “friends” happily trashing him along with the Dems) then he is just an absolute mother-effing moron.
He experienced firsthand the psychotic hatred and evil of the left, and he saw the willingness of his former friends to throw in to the wolves to Curry’s favor with lunatics who hate them, and he saw how it was only us, the conservatives, President Trunp’s bade, who stood with him all the way.
And despite that, he will rule with them and not is, and view them and not us as his people. That makes him both a moron and a coward, and he can go to hell.
Sorry, I am out of patience or tolerance.

Howie Carr asks if the Time "Man Of The Year" even means anything any more? Not to me it dasn't.
Howie quips, after reading the names being suggested for Times MOTY, that it ought to be called Times "Victim Of The Year," due to all the PC victimhood BS.

AB, that sounds like the step after the squoze down tubes get too far gone.

daddy, his inability to find the Home button was not due to his inability to make the Home/"picture of a house" connection. ;^)
There's no "picture of a house" icon by default unless you enable it in Settings.

Manny,
That sounds similar to what Momma was doing. As I understand it some guy would get into a bubble-suit and jump into containment and set up some robot equipment, controllable from a great distance, that would be able to insert some electronic probe into each of these thousands of metal tubes that the superheated steam would come racing through to slam into the turbines to spin, creating electricity. I think that's how it worked. Steam generator (nuclear power)
The probe in the tubes would send out some signal that as it moved along the tube would get some electronic return and if your equipment was properly tuned you could find cracks down to very, very small dimensions, and I think that after a certain percentage were eventually discovered and plugged, the unit was deemed unfit and they had to remove the huge unit and replace it with a new huge unit.

Howie and guests once again expressing their huge frustration with Trumps refusal to release documents, phone calls, transcripts, etc---all the stuff that his allies have been begging him to release for so many, many months.

Which I'm pretty sure is also the case in Chrome.
Btw, for those who don't like Chrome's/Brave's default new tab behavior - which doesn't go to the new tab when it's created - there's an extension called "Tabs To The Front" at the Chrome web store.

Thanks AB.
Sounds like we're all talking the same thing. And as for French standardization Momma loved it since all you had to do was tune your equipment for that standard French Model and it was pretty much the same for whatever unit she was doing across the country, whereas Stateside she was having to retune her stuff at every single plant, and even had to retune her stuff between different units at the same US plant since even individual units could be different.

The Brave conversation reminded me that I haven't used it in a while, so I started it up. After 10 minutes I had these running
but still no Brave. No idea what was wrong, so I blew it away and reinstalled.Posted by: Dave (in MA) | December 10, 2018 at 04:53 PM

This guy at Ace states pretty well how I feel about Andy McCarthy, when I am not cursing him as an abject traitor:
244 McCarthy can be quite valuable when he sticks to the mechanics, in which he is an experienced true authority. Beyond that, he has shown himself to have horrible judgement about people and the state of the justice system, IMO. He also shows the standard Beltway cluelessness/squeamishness over Trump's style and behavior, but that's not important.
Last few things of his I've bothered to read strayed far outside his fairly small wheelhouse.
Actually his case is another depressing data point, in a way. He's very smart and able and probably has the highest integrity and is a true patriot, even a bit of a warrior in that respect. But the ground shifted under him (and all of us) to such an extent that he now can appear sadly outdated, out of touch. He's not the least bit responsible for the degradation of the institutions he served, or the civic culture, but he also doesn't seem to be aware of those things, much of the time.
