when we do those calculations, we find that the Earth migrates away from the Sun at ~1.5 centimeters per year.
Enjoyed Kev's link to that article on why the Earth is very slowly moving away from the Sun, due to the Sun's slow loss of mass. I didn't know that but I recall reading this fact a long time ago and finding it fascinating: Why the Moon is getting further away from Earth
The Moon continues to spin away from the Earth, at the rate of 3.78cm (1.48in) per year, at about the same speed at which our fingernails grow...The migration of the Moon away from the Earth is mainly due to the action of the Earth's tides.
So nobody stays put but apparently for different reasons.
Ms. Abramson is 100% correct. Horrible and totally dishonest reporting on almost everything they write. Hence the term Fake News, Enemy of the People, and Opposition Party!
Daddy, I guessed on the sun losing mass. But assumed the earth and moon both gain mass over time. Gotta think about that tide thing, what with the oceans rising due to Al Gore’s chakra.
As the deformed moon rotates away from the connecting line, gravity exerts a torque which acts to diminish the rotational angular momentum of the moon, gradually slowing its rotation rate. ... The Moon's tidal force on the Earth likewise influences it so that energy is being dissipated by tidal friction.
It’s always the angular momentum. I knew that from p chem.
You know I do find astronomy scary--we're just hanging on to a rock spinning in infinite cold space. Think about it. OTOH it makes all our cares and worries seem trivial.
This slowing rotation means energy is lost by the Earth. This energy is transferred to the Moon which is speeding up, and as we've talked about in previous episodes the faster something orbits, the further and further it's becomes from the object it's orbiting.
I’M SO OLD, I CAN REMEMBER WHEN THEY ONLY HATED WHITE MEN: Why some on the left hate white women. In the new tribal leftism, white women who vote Republican are traitors.

What is this “decent and elevated conservatism” of which Kristol speaks? It is, of course, the conservatism that he and his friends represent—the conservatism Michael Anton anatomized in his remarkable essay, (The Flight 93 Election) a conservatism, alas, that may have the right opinion about morality but is too feckless actually to choose it.
Dennis Prager for me is easier to listen to on ethics and morality than Kimball since that is and has been Prager's focus for the majority of his adult life, so when he interviewed his friend Jonah G way back before the election and very effectively quizzed Jonah on his moral blindness re: the Trump/Hillary choice, he exposed Jonah's illogical pseudo-morality and Jonah and the audience knew it when he exposed it.

Pierce Corcoran was only 22 years old when he was killed by an illegal immigrant in a car crash on December 29th, 2018.
Pierce Corcoran, born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee. A responsible, hardworking and loving son, brother and grandson. Pierce’s life is to be remembered and celebrated for his relationship with his Heavenly Father, his love for others, and his determination to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Was he perfect? No, but he was taught to care about others and his impact on them. He was taught and practiced personal responsibility throughout his life. He was compassionate towards others, others whom might look differently than he or whom might speak differently than he.
As we mourn our precious son and try to honor his memory, we are also faced with the fact that there is much discussion surrounding his tragic death.
For us, there are two issues: safety and responsibility. As it pertains to safety, we are not the first, nor will we be the last to lose a loved one on a road known to many as dangerous. This is something we feel must be addressed. As it pertains to responsibility, we as parents taught all three of our children to be responsible for their actions. We discussed with them their need to maintain their vehicles and always have their license, registration and insurance up to date.
Everyone is well aware that the 44 year old man involved in our 22 year old’s death did not practice this same responsibility and has not done so for 14 years. Yes, it was an accident and yes, it could have been anyone.
It’s not about where this man came from–it’s the fact that he takes no personal responsibility for his actions. Not only in the financial sense, but no responsibility at all. He will most likely face very little jail time when all is said and done. He believes he should remain in our country illegally. Not only that, but we provide his counsel to fight for his rights.
We are all aware, as a family, that nothing will bring Pierce back, but don’t tell me my son, who lived in this country and followed its rules, doesn’t deserve better. For God’s sake, out of respect for the men and women who fought and fight to make this country such a desirable place to live, DO THE RIGHT THING and come here legally and become a responsible citizen.

Thanks for the link to Steyn's history of Girl From Ipanema (Hat tip Caro and Mr Gimbel).
Contrary to legend, Jobim and Moraes didn't write the whole thing in the bar. That would have been too neat, even for an and-then-I-wrote anecdote. But they jotted down the gist of the music and text on two napkins - and then they parted and returned to their respective pads and put their respective napkins through some rewriting and polishing. And the girl from Ipanema started walking and never looked back. "It's the oldest story in the world," said Norman Gimbel, who would write the English lyrics. "The beautiful girl goes by, and men pop out of manholes and fall out of trees and are whistling and going nuts, and she just keeps going by. That's universal."

---“It’s an incredible thing to see this diverse House. I must say, I’m ever-optimistic when I watch them. A lot of young people must be feeling, ‘I can be one of them.’ So it’s a pretty exciting thing.”
--- '...it’s about time. It’s about time that the House of Representatives, the peoples’ house, begins to look more like the people of the United States. And I think it’s thrilling, I felt that at the time of the midterms.

So to see families together at this moment, to see the joy of new people thinking that maybe things will be different, you know, that maybe something will change and this fever will break, we just have to celebrate that moment. And it’s a great thing.

Hahhahahhahahhahhahahaha!!!!!!
On her first full day of campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination in Iowa, Elizabeth Warren was asked about her DNA test.
She responded with: "I am not a person of color. I am not a citizen of a tribe,"

Manufacturing jobs added under @BarackObama: minus 210k; two years under @realDonaldTrump : plus 473k. That’s a heck of a magic wand

Just a reminder about those who tell us what's what and who write our History:
Doris Kearns Goodwin: ‘Thrilling’ to See Dems Return ‘Joy’ to Washington
Goodwin:---...for all the angst that people felt about who the speaker should be, between the election and today, there’s no question she’s the right person at the right time in the right place.”
---“...she knows procedure, she knows strategy, she knows politics, and she’s confident as hell.”
---"We’ve had so little joy in politics in these last months. I mean, there seems to me so little joy in President Trump as a person, you know, except when he’s fighting against something. So to see families together at this moment, to see the joy of new people thinking that maybe things will be different, you know, that maybe something will change and this fever will break, we just have to celebrate that moment. And it’s a great thing.
---"...just take this moment and feel good about it. I just have a little bit better feeling about things right now, as of this moment.”

“That doesn't look like Warren. The people are in short sleeves.”
Agree, it looks like Hillary.
ab, sbw, thanks for the info on VPN. I’ve noticed that I sometimes have trouble connecting to Amazon while connected via the VPN. I did check that the provider does not maintain logs. At least that’s what they say.
