OK, wow - the NY Times tells us that after Comey was fired the FBI complemented their criminal investigation of Trump with a counterintelligence probe. No reporting on whether the FBI sought, or found probable cause for, FISA warrants for folks other than Carter Page.
Why the revelation? Who knows? But a Trump-philic spin would be that Team Mueller is shifting the goalposts and trying to let The Resistance down gently. Note this deeply buried explanation of the two types of investigations:
The F.B.I. conducts two types of inquiries, criminal and counterintelligence investigations. Unlike criminal investigations, which are typically aimed at solving a crime and can result in arrests and convictions, counterintelligence inquiries are generally fact-finding missions to understand what a foreign power is doing and to stop any anti-American activity, like thefts of United States government secrets or covert efforts to influence policy. In most cases, the investigations are carried out quietly, sometimes for years. Often, they result in no arrests.
No arrests, no indictments, just a deeper understanding - well, that might cover the last two years. Hard news for The Resistance, if that is where this is headed.
PILING ON: Paul Mirengoff unloads.
OH, PLEASE: Benjamin Wittes of Lawfare is providing an example of the Power of Positive Rationalization. Or I am. Or both. His theme is that this investigation was about Russian interference in our election, not Trump per se. Supporting Congressional ass-covering testimony:
I have been authorized by the Department of Justice to confirm that the FBI, as part of our counterintelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government's efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election and that includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia's efforts (emphasis added).
And for emphasis:
It was about Russia. Full stop. It was always about Russia. And it still is about Russia.
The "full stop" is important so the reader can catch his breath after laughing out loud. Just off-hand, we know Team Hillary paid Steele (through cutouts) for dirt on Trump peddled by Russian government officials, some of which hit the US press before the election. Were the Russians hoping to aid both sides with the idea that the eventual loser of the election would scream "Collusion" and undermine the winner? Crafty!
Now, some people know that could not have been happening because US intel concluded that the Russkies started out helping both sides and fomenting division but eventually threw in behind Trump. Of course, many of those same people believe the intel behind Saddam's WMDs was politicized, but they know that didn't happen here. Whatever.
So how hard has Mueller pushed the Steele/Fusion GPS people? How many Facebook folks have been brought in to determine whether Russian moles are operating from the inside there? How deep an understanding has he tried to develop?
As an alternative to the "Always about Russia" paradigm, let's imagine this was always about the (bipartisan) Washington establishment rejecting the Trump insurgency. In that model, Hillary gets a pass, Facebook gets a pass, and yes, the investigation is all about Trump.
LAST LAUGH: From the Times, the FBI knows best:
A vigorous debate has taken shape among some former law enforcement officials outside the case over whether F.B.I. investigators overreacted in opening the counterintelligence inquiry during a tumultuous period at the Justice Department. Other former officials noted that those critics were not privy to all of the evidence and argued that sitting on it would have been an abdication of duty.
So if we knew what the FBI knew we would be reassured. This, from the same folks who resisted many oversight subpoenas just to spare themselves embarrassment. Strangely unconvincing, and where is the trust?
Foist? Or nearly?

Bringing this over from the last thread since it is pertinent to TM’s post.
The NY Times article (which seems to have been triggered by the leak of the transcripts of Lisa Page’s testimony) about the DOJ and FBI opening up an investigation into Trump over concerns he was an agent of Russia moves the needle to almost fully pointing to “Rosenstein is a White Hat” .
A few weeks back there was discussion on this (and IIRC CH said that Jack Straw over at AoS said the same thing) that the main reason Rosenstein appointed Mueller SC was to protect Trump from McCabe who was leading the bogus investigation. If Rosenstein was a Black Hat he would have just allowed McCabe, Strzok, Page and everyone else part of the Obama criminal cabal to continue on with the bogus investigation.

posted in the midst of new thread starting.
Hola, Tom R:
"If Rosenstein was a Black Hat he would have just allowed McCabe, Strzok, Page and everyone else part of the Obama criminal cabal to continue on with the bogus investigation."
not necessarily so. let's take a different look.
if appointing Mueller as SC was designed to centralize CONTROL of investigative process (witholding evidence, burying evidence, etc. which is Mueller's historical pattern), then removing the investigating authority and perogatives from McCabe--- even removing him entirely from the FBI--- Rosenstein increased the power AGAINST the President.
to the public, removing McCabe shielded Rosenstein and Mueller from "the bad apples run amok."
McCabe crapped the bed.
something had to be done to minimize risk and exposure after Comey was torched.
in the wake of McCabe's failed schemes, and subsequent revelations, the cabal needed to centralize its investigative power and cork the FBI under Wray, going forward.
Rosenstein was the prime mover in this entire Special Counsel debacle, even to the point of acting unconstitutionally. that was HIS action.
His motive? WGARA?
i am now of the firm opinion that Mueller's investigation is a sandbagging operation to fortify their coverup of many different cabal directed activities.
further, once Mueller has released his report, and the US AG gains access to all work product, the administration will have a fighting chance to reverse engineer- in detail- what the investigation was hiding from the American people by not investigating the obvious (Steele and related players).
i am of this opinion because what we learned from Nixonian folly was the crime isn't the crisis (although these under Obama are devastating!) making incident--- it is the coverup.
the enemy is making a big big mistake in broad daylight. Trump is not interrupting that. this isn't 4D--- it's the art of war.
fire away.
Hope you're feeling rested and renewed, Tom R. Most of all, that you're full of piss and vinegar for the fights ahead!
MAGA!

His farewell address prompted looking for his Alzheimer's letter, five years later. My bolding:
Nov. 5, 1994
My Fellow Americans,
I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease.
Upon learning this news, Nancy and I had to decide whether as private citizens we would keep this a private matter or whether we would make this news known in a public way.
In the past Nancy suffered from breast cancer and I had my cancer surgeries. We found through our open disclosures we were able to raise public awareness. We were happy that as a result many more people underwent testing.
They were treated in early stages and able to return to normal, healthy lives.
So now, we feel it is important to share it with you. In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater awareness of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clearer understanding of the individuals and families who are affected by it.
At the moment I feel just fine. I intend to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have always done. I will continue to share life's journey with my beloved Nancy and my family. I plan to enjoy the great outdoors and stay in touch with my friends and supporters.
Unfortunately, as Alzheimer's Disease progresses, the family often bears a heavy burden. I only wish there was some way I could spare Nancy from this painful experience. When the time comes I am confident that with your help she will face it with faith and courage.
In closing let me thank you, the American people for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your President. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future.
I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.
Thank you, my friends. May God always bless you.
Sincerely,
Ronald Reagan

Your point is countered by the fact if you are correct, then that means Trump is an idiot for allowing someone he appointed to be DAG to continue keeping his job for months despite all the evidence that Rosenstein is a Black Hat conspiring with Mueller to destroy him.
I think we now know what the main topic of the conversation was when Mueller and Rosenstein met with Trump the day before Mueller was appointed SC.

To what degree will the appointment of Deputy AG Rosenstein's replacement be a battle royal?
To what degree will the Deputy appointment influence the new AG and how he functions or dysfunctions?
i'd like to see a flame/bulletproof fighter in that Deputy's position. protect the AG and go after the cover-up left behind by Rosenstein et al.
up til now, two things stand out to me: 1) the Hyena Media-Propaganda Machine has focused on 24.7 destruction of the President's credibility; 2) Mueller's investigation has turned up precious little of much while his $50 million legal team buries and conceals evidence.
even if the evidence is unsealed and revealed before the 2020 election, the HMPM's handiwork will have managed to make POTUS look like a raving lunatic, similar to how they made him look over "wiretaps."
i have no idea what the WH's legal options will be at the point where Mueller hangs up his investigation.

going forward the President must choose his battles wisely.
there are many. after all, he's the President.
but here are two that present a crucial choice:
1. Restore the integrity of the US Justice System (DOJ); and,
2. Prosecute the key members of the Obama/Clinton cartel and hang them.
the key to numero uno, as i see it, is unlocking the Mueller cover-up. prosecute and clean house. restore faith in the DOJ as an institution. hire and fire; force Mitch's hand in the Senate to get all appointments done or face a coup against his leadership.
the key to numero two, as i see it, is to have a DOJ unbeholden to the cartel. no ifs, ands, or buts. then spend unlimited amounts of money hauling the players before grand juries, litigate against them (for decades if need be), ruin them financially IN THE NAME of Justice, and convict them.
and if the cartel players die before it's all said and done, then they die under a cloud, beleaguered, and broke. the survivors? the rest of their miserably shortened lives will be spent in prizzin.
restoring the Justice Department requires letting Mueller finish his coverup. even the perfect crime committed by the most astute criminal leaves one seemingly irrelevant clue or scrap of evidence behind. how perfect is Mueller?
Trump wins battles before they are fought. if he aspires to winning #2 he sets the table by winning #1 during his two-term presidency.
he'll also succeed in destroying what's left of the Social Democrat Party.

Katie Hill was a superstar last summer after Democrats nominated her to face Republican Congressman Steve Knight. The Guardian called her "America's most millennial candidate." And she won.
(Before): "Hill, D-Agua Dulce, said the only way to end the two-week-old shutdown is ... to support a House-passed budget resolution that doesn’t include the border-wall funding Trump wants."
(After): ... [Friday], five days later, Hill changed sides ... "I mean, I will definitely... I will vote for some money for physical barriers." So no wall. Just physical barriers.
Posted by: Jim,SunnyvaleCA,USA | January 12, 2019 at 04:57 AM
Iirc, on Thursday, Katie Hill accused Pres. Trump of "political terrorism" wrt his handling of the shutdown and demands for a border wall. By Friday, she had changed her mind and was now stating she would vote for some kind of 'physical barriers.'
She must have caught some significant blowback over her 'terrorism' comments. Enough to do an about-face and cave on her opposition. I hope that this is a portent of many others Dims caving soon, too.
She won her seat in a staunchly conservative district in the Santa Clarita Valley, just north of Los Angeles, that had *never* elected a Dem to that office. I am still trying to understand how she was able to do that . . . money should not have been a big enough difference maker.
And the tweet that henry posted by Charlie Kirk of TPUSA re voter fraud in California is disturbing. It makes me wonder if the Dems pulled off a Philly-level or a Chicago-level amount of voter fraud in CA this past election.

Trump couldn't have known that Rosenstein was directing the surveillance against him.
You are moving the goalposts. Rosenstein had absolutely nothing to do with the surveillance of Trump by the Obama administration during the campaign. Trump learned Obama was spying on him before Rosenstein was even appointed DAG.
The FBI's Russian collusion investigation also started under Obama. This NY Times article is talking about a second investigation led by McCabe that didn't start until after Comey was fired. This one went beyond Russian collusion and was alleging Trump was an active agent of Russian and a traitor to his country.
Fortunately Rosenstein thwarted McCabe by appointing Mueller as SC. I will bet anyone here a 6 pack of beer that when Rosenstein and Mueller met with Trump for the FBI Director "job interview" the topic of discussion were all of the actions of the Obama criminal cabal against Trump. Trump has known from the outset Mueller was appointed SC to protect him from McCabe and the rest of the Obama cabal still at the DOJ/FBI.
I offer that Trump has little power with too few allies explains RR’s continued employment over “Trump must be a dumbass to allow” style straw man logic.
If a few JOMers without access to all the inside information are smart enough to have figured out RR is a Black Hat and trying to destroy Trump then Trump is an idiot if he himself hasn't figure it out yet. Posted by: jim nj | January 12, 2019 at 02:20 AM
I don't care much for Megyn - I think she failed to do the right thing when given the chance - and I think she ultimately destroyed her own career chances.
But . . . at least *she tried* to honestly earn her money from NBC - even if they were no longer willing to participate.
Gretchen Carlson, however, the mostly talent-less, self-absorbed former beauty queen at Fox News Channel with terrible ratings, took a $20 million settlement from Fox News/NewsCorp after claiming that Roger Ailes harassed and discriminated against her. Despite the fact that Ailes gave her a prime slot, a whole hour for a show of her own at 2 P.M. Eastern.
I don't condone *any* harassment or discrimination, but her accounts of Ailes' reputed conduct were pretty lame - not of the nature or duration of what most people consider harassment.
And Ms. Carlson has been preening around the broadcast networks ever since, holding herself out as some paragon of virtue and sacrifice, relentlessly fighting against those terrible, oppressive men.

The potential that Trump is working on behalf of Russia, therefore, by definition posits some kind of corrupt secret relationship. That is to say, it’s an investigation into whether Trump is a Russian asset.

There is an ongoing narrative being promoted that Horowitz/Huber have not even interviewed anyone regarding the crimes (ex. FISA abuse, spying on Trump, etc) committed by the Obama cabal. The pundits (ex. Paul Sperry, Sundance) promoting this narrative are typically pro-Trump pundits. Sperry himself has said he has spoken with some of the people who Horowitz/Huber should have already interviewed and they say they have not been contacted yet.
The list of people I think Horowitz/Huber should have interviewed for a legit investigation into the crime of the Obama cabal are Lynch, Comey, McCabe, Brennan, Clapper, Strzok, Page, Priestap, Bruce Ohr and Nellie Ohr. That is just a few names off the top of my head.
What has me scratching my head is why any of these members of the Obama criminal cabal would agree to an interview with a conservative writer like Paul Sperry. Would any of them publicly admit to anyone they were under criminal investigation before any indictments were issued?
If I am correct that Paul Sperry has not interviewed any of these Obama cabal members, how would he know whether Horowitz/Huber has or hasn't interviewed them?

It is my opinion that the democrats thought they had the 2016 election in the bag because of vote fraud and corruption.
One of two things happened:
1. People in military intelligence caught wind of it and messed up their efforts.
Or,
2. Trump was insanely popular and they didn't cheat enough to overcome his support.
It also could be both.
This is why they got hysterical. They are trying to explain to people like Tom Steyer, George Soros, and others why they threw all their money down a rat hole.

-- Firing him is equivalent to firing Mueller.--
That's presumably because of RR oversseing Mueller. If I'm not mistaken RR is no longer overseeing Mueller; hence firing the no good, backstabbing, black hat RR would cost nothing.
And if the Senate doesn't approve a replacement Trump can name an acting one for a pretty long stretch, which is certainly better than Orange Julius Caesar continuing to employ et tu Brute.
I think it does give us a pretty good indication that RR's hat is, at worst, a self serving grey.

On hearing stuff:
I once had a helpdesk ticket concerning a crt monitor.
It was producing an annoying, high pitched sound.
I went investigated and found nothing. Closed the ticket.
It was immediately reopened by the original author.
I went back with another guy. He heard nothing. Exasperated, I turned around and said 'What exactly is the issue?'
The complainant, a female pharmacist, said 'Quit ignoring my issue. Everyone here can hear it.' I turned around and every else in the room, all female, had their arms diaspprovingly folded across the their chest and were nodding their heads in a most negative manner.
I called over to the IT office and asked for my one female employee to come over. She arrive and confirmed the issue.
I then ordered my first flat screen monitor. About 15" and $500. It solved the issue.
To this day, at work or at home, I just go ahead and spend the money when females complain to me about something that doesn't really exist.

Snow is still falling. Amazed native Tennessean is out with camera crews photographing the snow and snowplows.
We now have about 6 inches of snow, give or take.
This is a far cry from the Blizzard of 78, but I figure most of these news people weren't born then.

On the personal front a little good news; while going through my difficulties I stupidly sold several custom guns I had made stocks for that were pretty special.
For whatever I reason I put pics of them in a slideshow for my screensaver awhile back. Seeing them night after night made me realize what a dope I had been so I contacted the guys I'd sold them to. Managed to get back the three most important ones with the best stocks. Two still in question, and I will have to correct a bit of goofiness the previous guys inflicted but at least I have them back. Would like to leave them to Little Ig some day.

Just read TM's link to Mirengoff.
I still find him worth reading. He has slowly moved to the Trump side of things and whatever continued skepticism toward Trump he has makes his disgust with and criticism of Trump's enemies all the more credible and convincing.

About 5 inches of snow here in Beautiful Bloomington, IN.
I was hoping for the light, fluffy stuff I could use the leaf blower on. Turns out to be the wet, heavy stuff. I've shoveled what had to be shoveled to get outta the driveway and won't do that anymore till the snowing is done in the morning.
In the meantime, I've retired to the garage where I'm watching the Colts get beat.
If this keeps up I may reconsider my boycott of NFL sh*t.

Ah, the good old days when they stopped playing football in January and the halftime show was 15 minutes of a college marching band.
On this date: Jan. 12, 1969, Joe Namath and the Jets defeated the Colts 16-7 to win Super Bowl III.

If I am correct that Paul Sperry has not interviewed any of these Obama cabal members, how would he know whether Horowitz/Huber has or hasn't interviewed them?
That's a good point. Apparently Sperry and others think that Horowitz and Huber should have interviewed people who could provide evidence against the cabal, which seems logical. I'm under the impression that these types of investigations start with people like that, and end with interviews of the perps themselves, after all the evidence is in hand.

And the Democrat Job Machine marches on:
"A coalition of nonprofits led by Jewish Family Service of San Diego, Catholic Charities, the ACLU Foundation of San Diego & Imperial Counties, SEIU Local 221 and the San Diego Organizing Project have provided temporary shelter and meals to over 4,500 people, primarily women and children.
Most of the refugees helped by the ad-hoc San Diego Rapid Response Network are housed for just 24 to 48 hours until travel arrangements can be made.
In a visit to the Otay Mesa Immigration Detention Center in November, Newsom said the state needed to exert more effort to support recently arrived immigrants, who often lack proper support networks and can end up homeless in areas like San Diego and Imperial counties."
