The legacy media and the Twitter mob never stood a chance of processing accurately this incident involving Covington High School kids and a Native American Elder.
Let's see: in one corner, or anyway, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial waiting for their school buses, we have some (mostly) white Catholic high school boys with a scattering of MAGA hats in DC for the March for Life events. In the other, a Native American there for an Indigenous People's March.
To belabor the obvious, how will the media come out in a showdown between Evil White Christian Trump-loving Anti-Abortions Sons of the Oppressive Patriarchy and a beloved minority? My goodness, those high schoolers might even include a young Brett Kavanaugh!
The narrative writes itself (aided by Nathan Phillips, the Native Elder, activist and provocateur), as anyone familiar with the Duke lacrosse or UVA rape fantasies has learned.
Well. Just to pick out one "journalist" as an example, Sarah Mervosh of the flailing NY Times had a choice to throw in with the Feel Great, Feel the Hate viral mob, or actually dig for some facts and perspective. Her choice was utterly predictable; her original fan fiction submission was headlined "Viral Video Shows Boys in ‘Make America Great Again’ Hats Mob Native Elder".
That was walked back slightly to "Viral Video Shows Boys in ‘Make America Great Again’ Hats Surrounding Native Elder". Closer! Even the original video suggested something that longer video makes obvious - these students "surrounded" Phillips by the clever tactic of standing around while he pushed into the center of their group. We all know corrections are emotionally challenging at the Times so there were a few hours of suspense while we wondered if Times would fly even closer to reality or simply Move On. Somwhat surprisingly, cooler heads prevailed.
The Walkback of Shame continued with this follow-up piece:
Fuller Picture Emerges of Viral Video Between Native American Man and Catholic Students
A fuller and more complicated picture emerged on Sunday of the videotaped encounter between a Native American man and a throng of high school boys wearing “Make America Great Again” gear outside the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.
Interviews and additional video footage suggest that an explosive convergence of race, religion and ideological beliefs — against a national backdrop of political tension — set the stage for the viral moment. Early video excerpts from the encounter obscured the larger context, inflaming outrage.
So actual reporting, fact-gathering and interviewing led to a new perspective? Looking at two minutes of video and asking a longtime activist for his take on events is not reliable? Who could have guessed?
Robby Soave of Reason stared at the replays and delivered an invaluable booth review (Spoiler: the ruling on the field was overturned). CNN and USA Today are rethinking their reflexive response. As to Truth and Justice? We'll have to wait and see.
As to Lessons Learned, it's hardly news that certain stories, especially with Trump bashing, male-bashing, and Christian bashing themes, are catnip to the media and, like cats, they lose their minds. Sometimes they manage to sober up in a day or two, so giving these outrages time to breathe is a good idea. Of course, sometimes they simply move on without owning up to their deplorable instincts. Will anyone "journalist" lose their job over this? Don't be silly.
Secondly, the media behavior is symptomatic of a larger problem. It is all very well for folks at cocktail parties to chit-chat about Washington dysfunction and bemoan the child-like behavior of Trump, Pelosi et al.
But Washington is a mirror. We elected these people and they are empowered by the reality that this is a country where a huge part of the commentariat is delighted to, just as a random example, condemn a group of high school boys on the basis of thirty seconds reflection. Those "reporters" are paid to generate clicks and likes, and there is no money in the middle - the audience appetite at the Times is for Trump-bashing and conservative-bashing 24/7, and that is what is delivered. THAT is the key reality for the "Reality-Based" community.
The same could be said about certain right-wing outlets, but only fools imagine that the combined power of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and Breitbart can rival MSNBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, USA Today, the NY Times, the WaPo, et al.
We're divided because the energized fringes write checks for subscriptions, books, sponsored products and political campaigns. Media can't support itself on the old model where the advertising revenue subsidizes the news division, so what can they do? Well, this. They draw an audience by feeding the hate and its hard to see that changing.
I do wish the NY Times still had a budget (and an appetite) for the Public Editor position. I would love to see the Q&A with the no-doubt-delightful Sarah Mervosh, who had a solo byline on the original "Mobbed" fantasy and shares a byline on the Walkback of Shame piece. I imagine this:
"Did you report on Covington High?"
"I report on everything high".
Yeah, I'll be here all week. Try the veal.
He's not an "elder." He's just a standard grade leftist activist and provocateur. Exactly the kind of professional demonstrator one would expect to find in DC during the March For Life.

On a related note, it's only a matter of time before a victim of a media-led smear campaign winds up dead. What will the inciters and orchestrators of the outrage mob say then?
The inciters and orchestrators will say that the victim had it coming. And the MSM will parrot that message.
And all the "respectable" establishment Republicans will agree with them.

Nathan Phillips is a pipe carrier for the Omaha people, one of many. he has credibility among his people, despite being wrong about the "confrontation" in DC.
he IS a Vietnam veteran. he has earned his status as elder with the Omaha people. doesn't make him the second coming of Ghandi. it just means that he's put himself on the line for his people.
i wouldn't have done what he thought was right. nor would i unflinchingly cling to a mistake like that in the wake of how much discord (to put it mildly) has ensued from HIS actions.
but that does not make him a charlatan or a "plastic" or "cigar store" indian. he's known in these parts. and he's been through things i can guaran-damn-tee you, most here wouldn't dream of trying to do in the service of others *who have nothing*.
he'll pay for his actions (and he f*cking knows this--- i can guaran-damn-tee that too).

he'll pay for his actions (and he f*cking knows this--- i can guaran-damn-tee that too).

Posted by: Porchlight | January 21, 2019 at 12:25 PM
"He's not an "elder." He's just a standard grade leftist activist and provocateur."
You're wrong. He is an elder among his people. He makes no claim to speak for you, act on your behalf, etc.
It doesn't mean i protect, deflect criticism of him, or agree with him. I don't.
But this group here at JOM is quite prickly to sticking to facts and reasoned arguments. so....let's.
What i found interesting about the face-to-face was the young man's innocent smile during the entire moment. it's impossible to maintain that kind of smile if one believes he is about to be harmed in some way.
i'll bet my bottom dollar that Phillips will seek this young man out, in peace, and make things right. might not happen by Tuesday 4p EST but it will likely happen. Old Man has that responsibility. and he knows it.

"The inciters and orchestrators will say that the victim had it coming. And the MSM will parrot that message."

if a flashpoint results in lethal violence against a Lefty, then the tune will be about their martyrdom and ensuing canonization--- even if they had it coming, like Matthew "Meth Boy" Shepard.

He'll pay. He already lost his wife to bone cancer. but it seems that it only has made him more contentious. see where i am going with this?
You are missing the point. But that isn't because you aren't intelligent or defective in some way.
How much do you know about pipe carriers and how we are OBLIGED not to engage in the stuff Old Man is alleged to have done at Eastern Michigan?
i know, "we" want skulls and jail time, fines, and the slamming of cell doors in the court of public opinion. it's not gonna happen so long as the artifice of "social justice" warrants misbehavior and misappropriation of EVERYTHING SACRED---even our children--- in service to "the cause."
in the meantime, the proponents of the cause are reaping the whirlwind. case in point: the Trumpenfreude list.
i've seen "elders and warriors" alike stand up for their "cause" and go on the speakers' circuit, making money up front and losing their health and DYING from it. case in point: Russell Means. he died a horrible death and lived in misery the last 30 years of his life because he misused some of the most sacred medicine we know.
Means is just one example. so that's what i mean when i say that he'll pay. and why i can guaran-damn-tee it.

Yes, thanks for asking. I figure I probably had a small concussion because I have no memory of getting back to the car or the drive home which is about five miles away and involves making some decisions at intersections about which way to go. Plus once I got home with four staples in my scalp I had zero interest in reading or listening to music. That was Wednesday and I took a long nap Friday afternoon after which I've been at 100%.

That kid could have been my son. I have had to send Frederick all the debunking tweets, articles, criticisms, etc. since he was sucked into the Mainstream narrative, and it was FOX of all outlets. That kid kept his cool, and should be rewarded by the school, the diocese and the nation. We need more young men, white, black, or brown, not a bunch of radical anti-fa types.
His note on what happened has more facts, less innuendo, and bitter truth then all the Fake News being spread. But once again, a Catholic diocese like the one that closed Frederick's school, gets way to far out in front based on BS. Those kids performed exactly like I would expect Frederick to do in any similar confrontation.
Unfortunately for them, they got sucked into a vortex of hate, and no way out.

Justice Ginsburg is not in the office today because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday.
Once again, Justice Ginsburg will be celebrating the holiday by performing for family and friends her annual one-man play depicting events in the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
The performance will last for eight hours with a five-minute break at the halfway point.
Those fortunate enough to have been in the audience in past years never fail to marvel at Justice Ginsburg's amazing costume and character changes, including among others her uncanny and frankly rather disturbing portrayal of a Birmingham, Alabama police dog.
Those sitting in the front row may wish to wear a poncho.

The priest said, “What do you mean almost?”
The Irishman said, “Well, we got undressed and rubbed together, but then I stopped."
The priest said, “Rubbing together is the same as putting it in. You are not to see that woman again. For your penance say five hail Mary’s and put $50 I the poor box.”
The Irishman left the confessional, said his prayers and then walked over to the poor box.
He paused for a moment and stared to leave.
The priest who was watching, quickly ran over to him saying, “I saw that. You didn’t put any money into the poor box!”
The Irishman replied, “Yeah, but I rubbed the $50 on the box, and according to you, that is the same as putting it in.”

Do you know this guy's exact DOB? I would really like to 'vet' this his service record.
Let me tell you why. I used to have a boss who probably had a similar DNA heritage to you, but from Texas. He claimed he had been in law enforcement and had to flee with his family to WY because of some drug dealers. He was also a little too eager to say he was SF and served in Vietnam. He may have been like John Kerry, who served in Vietnam. He may have been like Dick Blumenthal, who served during Vietnam. He may have been like Bill Clinton who didn't serve and lied about everything.
After I left he got fired for sexual harassment. My point is, some people seem a little too eager to talk about seeing the elephant-maybe they didn't. I don't think a guy who was peeling potatoes during The Battle of the Bulge should hang his head in shame but we can call bullshit on phony valor.

The Left's activism includes all sorts of "get in your facers" while the right seems to be like Japanese sports fans who always tidy up afterwards.

Yeah, it says that at the top. It is interesting.

You can be in a Ranger regiment without going through Ranger school, can't you? I'm basing this all off Ringo and Corriea novels.

BREAKING: Demoted DOJ official Bruce Ohr back-channeled the Clinton-funded Steele dossier to the FBI, before and after the election, even though he testified last August that he knew "IT DEFINITELY IS HEARSAY" gleaned from second-and third-hand Russian and other anonymous sources

TM on twitter... has a new quote from Phillips:
"Why should I go around him?" he asked. "I'm just thinking of 500 years of genocide in this country, what your people have done. You don't even see me as a human being."
https://twitter.com/Tom_Maguire/status/1087428143948935168
Perhaps Mr Phillips should see those kids as human beings. Asshole.

Took him 19 more years to figure it out.

Janet:
There are a lot of those people still around.
They were the ones who dropped out while the rest of us worked 3 jobs to put ourselves through college and grad school to earn a degree that would actually get us a job.
A job that we can still do 50 years later while we make an actual positive contribution to society instead of trying to intimidate young impressionable high school kids with their antiquated BS.
It didn’t fly then and it doesn’t fly now.
My brother in Saigon during the real fighting still dedicated his life to orphans and drug addicted adults so that they could get a second chance at life

Pretty sure all combat marines left Vietnam in
April, 1971. My brother was an advisor imbedded
with the South Vietnamese and he left in 1972.
Nathan would be 16/17 Marine fighting in Vietnam.

But this group here at JOM is quite prickly to sticking to facts and reasoned arguments.
I've always wondered why people who've reached that conclusion always want to hang here.

What you people have done:
Classic victimhood writ large.
Get over yourself , make a real contribution to society and stop picking on catholic high school kids who in fact have a very bright future.
His grandson will expect a free lunch if his dopey grandfather doesn’t teach him to be a self sustaining independent young man.
Phillips’s is just perpetuating the myth of the white man has taken our life away from us.
His grandson can learn right now that he is the master of his fate and future.
These worn out tired tropes are so 60’s.

You've created a whole Veranda and Ledge for Nathan Phillips doing the right thing. But I still love you, despite my scepticism of the man.
Lawyers and journalists and doctors and tribal elders all have standards of ethics until confronted by their hatred of all things Trump.

Cap'n, glad all is well. I seemed to have missed the previous discussion of your injury - my apologies.
Happy birthday maryrose!

He couldn’t be 16.
He would have to be at least 18.
When did they stop the draft?
It was why my brother had to go.

JW President @TomFitton: By President Trump calling attention to the wasteful taxpayer-funded congressional delegations (CODELs), at least we can now have a debate about the fact that we have our military providing VIP luxury travel for our Congress.

Thank you Porch and CH.
So glad you are feeling better Captain.
Yes you did have a concussion.
Did anyone try to keep you awake after the accident?

There is no such thing as Marine Recon Ranger. Force Recon is the Marine capability similar to 75th Ranger Regiment. And "Forecon" should not be confused with Marine Division Reconnaissance. They are a Special Operations Command not unlike SEALS, Green Berets, an Air Foce Combat Controllers.
One of my neighbors, and a member of our community Vet Muster, was a serving Forecon platoon commander of 3rd Forecon Company in Vietnam.

Range Rover and a boat?
So you want to be semi- rich?
Well we would all like that.

Jack,
This thread by random navy guy on Twitter reinforces and details your argument:

Tradition is especially important when one's culture has been destroyed. Ask the Jews and the Vietnamese living here. The worst places in our country are our reservations. The social dysfunction is off the charts.
We have a neighbor, Indian Bob, who is Mohawk. Nice guy. He has a "Free Leonard Peltier" bumper sticker on his truck. God bless him. But he doesn't rant about the unfairness of it all and just gets on with life. We also have a couple of Juaneno members in the 'hood. Everybody gets along fine.
There is a lot to be angry about and a lot to be said for just getting on with it. It depends on where you want to be. Some people find value in their radicalism. Most of us don't. You don't just bang drums in people's faces. Not cool.

This is a thread which probably explains the weakness of the school and archdiocese. I recommend reading it.

Unfortunately some let the anger take over and don’t get on with life.
It does not give them the right to harass others and violate their civil rights.

The diocese abhors confrontation or anything that upsets the status quo.
Can’t really rely on them for back up or support.

Phillips' Vietnam veteran claims are all over the place. Says here he was adopted by a white family at age 5, and joined the Marines at 17:
http://archive.is/ncOHU#selection-1425.0-1425.127
If he is 64 now, he would have been 17 in 1972-73. Too late for Vietnam, right? Weren't the Marines out by then?
