The legacy media and the Twitter mob never stood a chance of processing accurately this incident involving Covington High School kids and a Native American Elder.
Let's see: in one corner, or anyway, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial waiting for their school buses, we have some (mostly) white Catholic high school boys with a scattering of MAGA hats in DC for the March for Life events. In the other, a Native American there for an Indigenous People's March.
To belabor the obvious, how will the media come out in a showdown between Evil White Christian Trump-loving Anti-Abortions Sons of the Oppressive Patriarchy and a beloved minority? My goodness, those high schoolers might even include a young Brett Kavanaugh!
The narrative writes itself (aided by Nathan Phillips, the Native Elder, activist and provocateur), as anyone familiar with the Duke lacrosse or UVA rape fantasies has learned.
Well. Just to pick out one "journalist" as an example, Sarah Mervosh of the flailing NY Times had a choice to throw in with the Feel Great, Feel the Hate viral mob, or actually dig for some facts and perspective. Her choice was utterly predictable; her original fan fiction submission was headlined "Viral Video Shows Boys in ‘Make America Great Again’ Hats Mob Native Elder".
That was walked back slightly to "Viral Video Shows Boys in ‘Make America Great Again’ Hats Surrounding Native Elder". Closer! Even the original video suggested something that longer video makes obvious - these students "surrounded" Phillips by the clever tactic of standing around while he pushed into the center of their group. We all know corrections are emotionally challenging at the Times so there were a few hours of suspense while we wondered if Times would fly even closer to reality or simply Move On. Somwhat surprisingly, cooler heads prevailed.
The Walkback of Shame continued with this follow-up piece:
Fuller Picture Emerges of Viral Video Between Native American Man and Catholic Students
A fuller and more complicated picture emerged on Sunday of the videotaped encounter between a Native American man and a throng of high school boys wearing “Make America Great Again” gear outside the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.
Interviews and additional video footage suggest that an explosive convergence of race, religion and ideological beliefs — against a national backdrop of political tension — set the stage for the viral moment. Early video excerpts from the encounter obscured the larger context, inflaming outrage.
So actual reporting, fact-gathering and interviewing led to a new perspective? Looking at two minutes of video and asking a longtime activist for his take on events is not reliable? Who could have guessed?
Robby Soave of Reason stared at the replays and delivered an invaluable booth review (Spoiler: the ruling on the field was overturned). CNN and USA Today are rethinking their reflexive response. As to Truth and Justice? We'll have to wait and see.
As to Lessons Learned, it's hardly news that certain stories, especially with Trump bashing, male-bashing, and Christian bashing themes, are catnip to the media and, like cats, they lose their minds. Sometimes they manage to sober up in a day or two, so giving these outrages time to breathe is a good idea. Of course, sometimes they simply move on without owning up to their deplorable instincts. Will anyone "journalist" lose their job over this? Don't be silly.
Secondly, the media behavior is symptomatic of a larger problem. It is all very well for folks at cocktail parties to chit-chat about Washington dysfunction and bemoan the child-like behavior of Trump, Pelosi et al.
But Washington is a mirror. We elected these people and they are empowered by the reality that this is a country where a huge part of the commentariat is delighted to, just as a random example, condemn a group of high school boys on the basis of thirty seconds reflection. Those "reporters" are paid to generate clicks and likes, and there is no money in the middle - the audience appetite at the Times is for Trump-bashing and conservative-bashing 24/7, and that is what is delivered. THAT is the key reality for the "Reality-Based" community.
The same could be said about certain right-wing outlets, but only fools imagine that the combined power of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and Breitbart can rival MSNBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, USA Today, the NY Times, the WaPo, et al.
We're divided because the energized fringes write checks for subscriptions, books, sponsored products and political campaigns. Media can't support itself on the old model where the advertising revenue subsidizes the news division, so what can they do? Well, this. They draw an audience by feeding the hate and its hard to see that changing.
I do wish the NY Times still had a budget (and an appetite) for the Public Editor position. I would love to see the Q&A with the no-doubt-delightful Sarah Mervosh, who had a solo byline on the original "Mobbed" fantasy and shares a byline on the Walkback of Shame piece. I imagine this:
"Did you report on Covington High?"
"I report on everything high".
Yeah, I'll be here all week. Try the veal.

If you are a journalist and have time to trash innocent kids, you have time to give Mr. Phillips a call and ask for his DD214 to validate his representations of his military record.
I don't know what his record is. But I know journalists are supposed to verify rather than trust.

The Ewok used to infuriate me by giving this loser the benefit of the doubt; that was a long time ago...
AllahPundit: It's Cool for the Media and My NeverTrump Twitter Buttfuck Buddies to Slander These Schoolkids But It's Way the Fuck Off Base for Trump to Proclaim Their Innocence
That's one way to look at it, I guess. Hey, too bad you're anonymous, or you'd be the Belle of the Ball at CNN and MSNBC. I mean, it takes a very special skill to look at a weekend of slander and threats against high school kids, all perpetrated by lunatic Twitter addicts who can't get over losing an election (and I'm speaking largely of the Fake Conservatives, here), and decide, "Say, you know whose fault this is? Trump's, that's whose."
You know it's weird, I see these same people denigrating Trump's use of social media and then turning around and using Twitter to scalp-hunt school-children. I guess.... well I guess that kind of is the main use of Twitter, to be honest. Just strange to see some Oldy Oldson adults joining in on the teenagers' "Let's Ruin This Kid's Life Just Because" games.
Hey -- they wore red hats. Everyone knows that Freedom of Speech does not include the right to wear red hats. Chaplinsky Rule -- that's what the law refers to as a "fighting hat."
Was there ever any doubt that this crew of traitors, quislings, grifters and cowards would join the left in deciding that some people deserve to be harassed out of restaurants and threatened in their very homes?
You know these people are only Personal Economics Conservatives, right? And by that, I mean: They have no other skill or job except posting on allegedly conservative social media sites. Believe me, if they had any other options except this one, they'd take them. Their interest in "conservatism" isn't economic, it's personally economic -- it's either continue pretending (barely) to be conservative or get an actual job. Which is kind of tough at their (our) ages.
Say, it just occurred to me, AllahPundit -- if you want to assign blame for this, I can think of 25 names more deserving of blame than Trump's. Starting with your Sewing Circle of #SalonHot25 "Conservatives," who almost to a man (or, "man") decided to join the leftist lynchmob to destroy the Registered Hat Offender. You're the smart, intellectual ones who are really keen on facts, right? And yet you all jumped to join your leftist buddies in this orgy of lunatic hatred, because of course you did. You do this every single time. Every. Single. Time.
I'll be putting up the Names of Shame tomorrow. Eh, I'm sure you can guess them. It's always the same people, isn't it? It's not like there's any surprises about which "TruCon Conservative" is going to be standing proudly beside Slate, Salon, and Jezebel this time, saying the exact same things, spouting the same made-up #PretendFacts, spreading the same FakeNews Buzzfeed nonstories, hunting the same schoolchildren's scalps.
See, they're better than us -- that's why they always have to take a contrary position, especially when that contrary position involves them being 100% wrong. They need to show their Liberal Twitter Palz that they're not like those other conservatives, you know, the ones who demand evidence before condemning schoolchildren to a social media hellstorm. Only Nazis demand evidence before exiling someone. The Anti-Nazi TruCon Purity Brigade knows that the only way you can prove you're not a Nazi is to embrace Nazi standards of non-proof and guilt by social tribe

How about you assholes (adults all, most with advanced degrees and many years of professional experience) hold yourselves to a higher standard of behavior than you demand of teenage boys in the first place, then maybe you wouldn’t need to apologize so often, and tens of millions of people wouldn’t hold you in well-deserved contempt.

Whatever happened to the investigations against the false accusers (not just Ford, but the ones who clearly made stuff up and then fessed up afterwards)?
What happened to the investigation against Feinstein for violating all rules of the Senate and holding onto the information so it could be used as a political last-minute attack?
Oh, right. Nothing happened, nothing will happen, because "that's not who we are."

The reason Sarah Sanders does not go to the “podium” much anymore is that the press covers her so rudely & inaccurately, in particular certain members of the press. I told her not to bother, the word gets out anyway! Most will never cover us fairly & hence, the term, Fake News!

What happens if McTurtle can't get it through the Senate?

The MFM's game seems not too well thought out.
They have to know constantly being caught in lies alienates the marginal and "independent" types and is why they are thought even less of than lawyers.
Their base is already frenetic.
All progs ever say is how they are destined to conquer all via demographics. But their strategy only works with an influx of new progs, because they are absolutely running off native people far faster than they're gaining them [ie Blexit, #walkaway].
The Wall is an existential threat and they know it, as does Trump, hence their screeching insanity about it. And Trump himself with his unapologetic appeal to minorities is as well, hence their screeching insanity about him.
They don't hate him and his followers because they're a threat to an America they actually despise.
They hate us because we're the first real threat to them they have faced.

"maryrose, that assumes Mutt Rumbley and the Schumerites allow it to pass."
First, they have to allow it to get to a vote.

...big Crooked Hillary law firm, represented by her lawyer Michael Sussmann (do you believe this?) who worked Baker hard & gave him Oppo Research for “a Russia probe.” This meeting, now exposed, is the subject of Senate inquiries and much more. An Unconstitutional Hoax. @FoxNews

Maybe we should let migrants know that they might want to reconsider coming to America while this Democrat-Media anti-Catholic hatefest is going on.

James,
You can sue anyone you want. Whether they are liable is a question for the jury. If they are found liable and have no assets you have wasted your time.
