The legacy media and the Twitter mob never stood a chance of processing accurately this incident involving Covington High School kids and a Native American Elder.
Let's see: in one corner, or anyway, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial waiting for their school buses, we have some (mostly) white Catholic high school boys with a scattering of MAGA hats in DC for the March for Life events. In the other, a Native American there for an Indigenous People's March.
To belabor the obvious, how will the media come out in a showdown between Evil White Christian Trump-loving Anti-Abortions Sons of the Oppressive Patriarchy and a beloved minority? My goodness, those high schoolers might even include a young Brett Kavanaugh!
The narrative writes itself (aided by Nathan Phillips, the Native Elder, activist and provocateur), as anyone familiar with the Duke lacrosse or UVA rape fantasies has learned.
Well. Just to pick out one "journalist" as an example, Sarah Mervosh of the flailing NY Times had a choice to throw in with the Feel Great, Feel the Hate viral mob, or actually dig for some facts and perspective. Her choice was utterly predictable; her original fan fiction submission was headlined "Viral Video Shows Boys in ‘Make America Great Again’ Hats Mob Native Elder".
That was walked back slightly to "Viral Video Shows Boys in ‘Make America Great Again’ Hats Surrounding Native Elder". Closer! Even the original video suggested something that longer video makes obvious - these students "surrounded" Phillips by the clever tactic of standing around while he pushed into the center of their group. We all know corrections are emotionally challenging at the Times so there were a few hours of suspense while we wondered if Times would fly even closer to reality or simply Move On. Somwhat surprisingly, cooler heads prevailed.
The Walkback of Shame continued with this follow-up piece:
Fuller Picture Emerges of Viral Video Between Native American Man and Catholic Students
A fuller and more complicated picture emerged on Sunday of the videotaped encounter between a Native American man and a throng of high school boys wearing “Make America Great Again” gear outside the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.
Interviews and additional video footage suggest that an explosive convergence of race, religion and ideological beliefs — against a national backdrop of political tension — set the stage for the viral moment. Early video excerpts from the encounter obscured the larger context, inflaming outrage.
So actual reporting, fact-gathering and interviewing led to a new perspective? Looking at two minutes of video and asking a longtime activist for his take on events is not reliable? Who could have guessed?
Robby Soave of Reason stared at the replays and delivered an invaluable booth review (Spoiler: the ruling on the field was overturned). CNN and USA Today are rethinking their reflexive response. As to Truth and Justice? We'll have to wait and see.
As to Lessons Learned, it's hardly news that certain stories, especially with Trump bashing, male-bashing, and Christian bashing themes, are catnip to the media and, like cats, they lose their minds. Sometimes they manage to sober up in a day or two, so giving these outrages time to breathe is a good idea. Of course, sometimes they simply move on without owning up to their deplorable instincts. Will anyone "journalist" lose their job over this? Don't be silly.
Secondly, the media behavior is symptomatic of a larger problem. It is all very well for folks at cocktail parties to chit-chat about Washington dysfunction and bemoan the child-like behavior of Trump, Pelosi et al.
But Washington is a mirror. We elected these people and they are empowered by the reality that this is a country where a huge part of the commentariat is delighted to, just as a random example, condemn a group of high school boys on the basis of thirty seconds reflection. Those "reporters" are paid to generate clicks and likes, and there is no money in the middle - the audience appetite at the Times is for Trump-bashing and conservative-bashing 24/7, and that is what is delivered. THAT is the key reality for the "Reality-Based" community.
The same could be said about certain right-wing outlets, but only fools imagine that the combined power of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and Breitbart can rival MSNBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, USA Today, the NY Times, the WaPo, et al.
We're divided because the energized fringes write checks for subscriptions, books, sponsored products and political campaigns. Media can't support itself on the old model where the advertising revenue subsidizes the news division, so what can they do? Well, this. They draw an audience by feeding the hate and its hard to see that changing.
I do wish the NY Times still had a budget (and an appetite) for the Public Editor position. I would love to see the Q&A with the no-doubt-delightful Sarah Mervosh, who had a solo byline on the original "Mobbed" fantasy and shares a byline on the Walkback of Shame piece. I imagine this:
"Did you report on Covington High?"
"I report on everything high".
Yeah, I'll be here all week. Try the veal.

I registered for the draft when Carter reinstated registration in 1980. As I recall, I just made the age cutoff for having to register. Decades later I recall being asked on government forms whether I had registered; it was nice to be able to (honestly) say yes.

Buckeye,
KK says only bones carry the bad ju-ju.
Which is good because we dug up all sorts of arrow heads and beads.
The Indians around here used acorns as their staple crop. There are all sorts of large limestone and granite outcroppings known as grinding rocks where they ground the acorns into flour. They wore holes into the rocks 6-10 inches deep and about 6 inches in diameter as they did the ol mortar and pestle thing.
Now they dig deep holes in Asian's pockets at the local casino, while another large one goes up about 15 miles away.

"There was that moment when I realized I've put myself between beast and prey," Phillips said. "These young men were beastly and these old black individuals was their prey, and I stood in between them and so they needed their pounds of flesh and they were looking at me for that."

Buckeye,
I was born in December of that year. I turned 18 in 1971 and was eligible for the draft in 1972. I had a draft number in the high 300's the prior year and high 20's when I became eligible. If memory serves me correctly, because of the down-sizing, they only drafted into the teens.
The 1971 and 1973 dates sound correct to me as to when the Marines were pulled from combat and eventually withdrawn.
Marines did remain at the Saigon US Embassy until April 30, 1975.
Overall I find his service in Vietnam unlikely. I'll wait on an FOIA.

Jim,
That's an interesting take on the 2nd Amendment. It may have been that they wanted to emphasize what many thought was a pre-existing right.
When militias were brought into existence you were required to provide your own gun. Powder and shot was provided by the government.
Prior to that though you can infer that every family was its' own primary defense force. It seems to me that given that condition you had a right to possess any weapon needed to defend yourself.
I don't think that people would oppose the militia as the locals were the militia. Officers were elected and it would be in your own best interest to vote for the best men available. Preferably someone with experience.
Perhaps there was a thought that the militias might be regulated in such a fashion that not every male 16-60 was included.

Catching up---I'm interested in seeing where what I read as KK's explanation of Phillips that so many read as a defense of him goes.
Great to see Sandy as always, but a Catholic saying passing the pipe sounds like voo doo?
Lapsed Protestant AB politely raised the issue, but this cradle Catholic is going to give some examples that I wrote but conked out before posting last night:
Wonder what Confirmation and Communion look like to others?
You know, those sacraments that instill grace?
That Virgin birth?
Stigmata?
Plenary indulgences?
Mass itself? Water and wine becoming the body and blood of Christ is a bridge too far for a whole lot of Christians, you know. One that we don't share with non-believers. Kind like the pipe, no?
That faith thing----pretty nebulous.
And truly a gift. An incredible gift.
And in the face of continuing scientific documentation of the "placebo effect"---believing does cause things to happen.

In November 1944, 36 men reported to the University of Minnesota as volunteers for a 13-month study under research scientist Ancel Keys. What became known as the Minnesota Starvation Experiment has long been cited as perhaps the most important study on the mental, physical, and social effects of food restriction. The rapid deterioration, the strange and often alarming changes in the subjects' behavior, and the long-lasting effects of "semi-starvation" are hallmarks to anyone familiar with disordered eating.

I just have to copy the portion about Davos:
"Exactly 226 years after the decapitation of King Louis XVI, who failed to quell popular discontent over a France’s feudal society, President Emmanuel Macron started his speech at a pre-Davos dinner at Versailles by invoking the king and his wife Marie-Antoinette. Macron, speaking to an audience that included J.P. Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon, Snapchat chief Evan Spiegel and Microsoft boss Satya Nadella, said he would not follow the path of guillotined French royals and would continue to reform the French economy despite occasional violent revolt."

anonamom,
No feed back on my editorial via phone or e-mail, but somebody had to read it.
Wow, I went out earlier this evening for a beer walk. I guess it's abut a thousand yards one way. Damn near froze. Got back home and checked the weather. 9 degrees and the wind was howling with gusts up to 30 MPH.
Hopefully it will be warmer tomorrow as I need to vote against a school bond issue. The Board of Ed wants to borrow $170 million to refurbish older buildings and build a new Junior High.
The wankers included in the language of the bond issue question that it would cost the average homeowner $300. They left out the "per year" part over the life of the bond.
One political faction controls our city government. An older one controls the Board of Ed. Figure in 1%, or so, of graft, kickbacks and donations and you get a nice little war-chest to mount a challenge against the city government.

Jim nj, you just bundle up, honey, and go vote--bad weather is always good for the Non D side.
I was raised to vote YES on school bonds---my parents, who sent their kids to parochial schools and paid the tuition for all five of us, always voted Yes.
Supported public schooling unquestioningly.
My dad's first elected position was on the school board.
Took me til about five years ago to cast my first NO.
But I did it!
Make sure you wear a hat---you really do lose 10% of your body heat from there.
Happy Tuesday. Hillary is still not president.
As Ig promised!!

Catholic Boarding School childhood, followed by the Vietnam war and alcoholism, gave Nathan Phillips, aka Sky Man according to his Native American Omaha belief, a good reason to be angry with the world. He managed to move on by meeting his Earth woman but now that the family is fighting cancer, his anger is growing.
The film’s initial plan is to follow the family and Nathan’s belief that he can pray cancer away from his wife via traditional healing techniques. Along the way plans change drastically as the desperate husband sees the film as his only way out.
A moving family story tackling contemporary battles which Native Americans fight and one of the common ethical dilemmas documentary filmmakers face – can we interfere or should we solely document reality?
My graduation film, produced at NYFA with the Kickstarter support of over 130 people – thank you all!

Mr. Phillips served in the Marine Corps in Vietnam from 1972-76. While he waited to participate in the grass dance, he explained that many nations believe it to be the oldest form of dance in this hemisphere, used to prepare a piece of ground for other activities many years ago.
"You have to be of sober mind and sober body because you have such a responsibility," he stressed.
Mr. Phillips now is of sober mind and body. He used to drink a lot, he said, but he's been sober for 22 years.

Good morning to everyone except Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who said Monday, “The world is gonna end in twelve years if we don’t address climate change.”
I’m not kidding. Someone needs to have an intervention with her and get this fully grown child some mental help.
===================================
Yes, she really said that.

What gets me going are the attitudes of those like Kristol, Boot and others, because they seem to think that the troops (made up of those groups who don't attend Beltway soirees) are simply expendable pegs in a table top war game. I think Carlson feels the same way.
That's my opinion of Scott Walker, too. He let the people who supported him, volunteered for him, donated money to him, suffer and twist in the wind, while doing NOTHING to stop, or punish in any way the people who did it to them.

Here's another one.
No one seems to understand why Trump was able to win. It wasn't because he was rich. It was because people felt like they knew him and he went TO the people with those rallies. People could tell he liked the average guy and understood their problems.
Now he has demonstrated that he keeps his promises, something no politicians do, which will give him even more backing.
The primaries are going to be a complete free-for-all on the dem side.

The more the Dems try to out-lunatic each other in the primaries, the better the chances of conservatives.
Note I didn't say Republicans.

This is a trendy and popular club/restaurant/shop area near downtown.
If we had our ex-Marine GOP former mayor instead of our dem mayor photo-op guy, this stuff wouldn't be happening.

Local news played a short clip of Kampaign-ala where she was feeling the plight of her furloughed federal brothers and sisters.
She is slowly making the shift to ebonics. Didn't see that coming.
