Per Politico:
Trump White House urging allies to prepare for possible RBG departure
After an ailing Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg missed oral arguments, the Trump team began early groundwork for another potential confirmation battle.
I like this detail in their lede:
The White House is reaching out to political allies and conservative activist groups to prepare for an ailing Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s possible death or departure from the Supreme Court — an event that would trigger the second bitter confirmation battle of President Donald Trump’s tenure.
"Second" bitter battle? OK, the Kavanaugh brawl dialed it up to Bork-Thomas levels, but the Gorsuch nomination was filibustered and the Republicans went nuclear. Critics later observed that Kavanaugh was sufficiently controversial that Republicans might not have chosen to go nuclear in his defense, but post-Gorsuch the die had been cast. Ah, well, water, bridge... We do have video of the Resistance brainstorming session that led to the Gorsuch filibuster.
simple matter of ordering twice the usual popcorn.

Kavanaugh was a sop to the RINOs to get them on board and figure out who were the obdurate dolts in the NeverTrumps. Even Patterico, when he wasn't pretending to be pious by linking Bach pieces in between calling people TrumpHumpers like a retarded monkey, approved of Kavanaugh.

I see the dipshits are at it again with another attempted assault weapons ban.
Posted by: Gentlejim | January 10, 2019 at 08:07 AM
The Senate Democrats, led by Diane Feinstein, have quietly slipped a new "Assault Weapons Ban" bill into the Senate legislative process while attention was diverted by the shutdown:
https://townhall.com/tipsheet/bethbaumann/2019/01/10/feinstein-and-friends-quietly-introduce-a-major-gun-control-bill-during-the-shutd-n2538811
The bill bans "any assault weapon that accepts a detachable ammunition magazine and has one or more military characteristics including a pistol grip, a forward grip, a barrel shroud, a threaded barrel or a folding or telescoping stock. Owners may keep existing weapons."
And it "Bans magazines and other ammunition feeding devices that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition, which allow shooters to quickly fire many rounds without needing to reload. Owners may keep existing magazines."
Feinstein tweeted these howlers as justification:
Sen Dianne Feinstein ✔
@SenFeinstein
Americans across the nation are asking Congress to reinstate the federal ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. If we’re going to put a stop to mass shootings and protect our children, we need to get these weapons of war off our streets.
1:18 PM - Jan 9, 2019
That's why I'm proud to introduce the Assault Weapons Ban of 2019. This bill bans the sale, manufacture, transfer and importation of 205 military-style assault weapons by name.
1:18 PM - 9 Jan 2019
She is getting deservedly slattered on her Twitter feed for this latest attempted ban:
https://twitter.com/SenFeinstein/status/1083110887827881984
Yeah, this is sure to "put a stop to mass shootings and protect our children", whatever that means.

Talk about a non-story from The Daily Beast …
White House Intervened in Trump's Casino Pal Steve Wynn's Case
It is unclear why the White House made the request for the meeting with acting Solicitor General Jeff Wall, which was uncovered in a Freedom of Information Act discovery by the group American Oversight and has not been previously reported. Nor is it clear if Wall actually met with White House officials about Wynn's case. Both the White House and the Department of Justice declined to comment.

Momto2, my condolences. Rocco, I'm looking forward to good news. Just got back from the Doctor Who says I have a Glaucoma, except I don't think I do because it's the same old problem in my left die that I've had since I was 48. Actually it was diagnosed when I was 48 and there's a good chance I was born with it. I will obey however that means my eyes are always going to be red. Overheard two older women ( and that means real old ) talking in the waiting room about how they wished Hillary hadn't run and how on earth could we elect someone with ties to Russia. I was so tempted to tell them that it was Hillary who had ties to Russia, but I kept my mouth shut. Interesting morning.

Are they sure they want to go down that road? Even the wimpy GOP would be tempted to order blue states [and everyone else] to vote on election day, have voter ID, no felons voting, demonstrate a real need for absentee ballots, as infinitum ....
The simple fact is if the right had any brains there would be a hundred or a thousand federal civil rights lawsuits already filed about vote dilution and vote fraud. There is no way these urban or blue state vote schemes could withstand the slightest scrutiny. That's why they scream from the rooftops there isn't voter fraud; because they know what a vast amount is just sitting there, barely concealed, ready to be uncovered.

before i go, wanted to share a great low-low carb porridge recipe for cold winter mornings.
CHIA Porridge ( :D won't give you 70s Green hair!)
1. Soak 1 cup dark or light chia seeds overnight
2. Next day stir soaked seeds to mix thoroughly. Seeds will form a gel.
3. heat 1/2 cup of preferred milk (low)
4. add favorite sweetener (i use xylitol because it tastes like sugar! :D)
5. stir in desired amount of chia with a whisker to fight lumping.
6. heat until milk vapor shows. turn off heat.
7. let porridge sit for 2 minutes to absorb heat without cooking the chia.
8. yummy it up.
very filling. sticks to your ribs. and it is easy on the digestive system requiring minimal enzymatic diversion from healing mode to digestive mode.
no post breakfast drowsiness or carb crash either. helped me kick the "toast" habit.
hope your days are grand. Kev out.

Due to a power outage, the house was very dark so the paramedic asked Kathleen, a 3 year old girl to hold a flashlight high over her mommy so he could see while he helped deliver the baby and Little Connor was born. The paramedic lifted him by his feet and spanked him on the bottom and he began to cry. The paramedic then asked the wide eyed 3 year old what she thought about what she had just seen.
She quickly responded “He shouldn’t have crawled in there in the first place, spank him again!”

In 1980, Kupperman served on the Reagan-Bush campaign team and was part of what became known as the "October Surprise Group," whose objective was to prepare for "any last-minute foreign policy or defense-related event, including the release of the hostages, that might favorably impact President Carter in the November election."

Justice Ginsburg will not be in the office today, again.
She is taking a very well-deserved long 11-day weekend for the Martin Luther King holiday.
Nevertheless, as you might expect, she plans to be very active over the long weekend.
Her planned activities include capturing a Bigfoot creature, locating the Templar treasure on Oak Island, strip mining an asteroid in a proof-of-concept demonstration and winning the bridge rubber game against the Steins down the hall.
She said she will call in to me her votes on court matters from her jitterbug.

stupid foreign laws are only good for lawyers:
European patent law has a concept called the technical effect doctrine. European Patent Office guidelines describe a technical effect as "the control of a technical process or of the internal functioning of the computer itself or its interfaces." The technical effect doctrine says that if an invention improves the function of a computer, then it's likely to be patentable.

Iggy's 11:16 is interesting.
Pinko AOC is hogging the limelight along with Tlaib and a couple of others, but the majority of Dem House freshmen had to pretend to be Republicans in order to capture Republican districts.
I'm assuming the fake Repubs will vote lockstep with Pelosi because they're Dem, but what do their constituents think of all this hype of the far left AOC contingent?
We don't yet know how it will play out, but seems to me that Joe Lieberman is right to be worried.
More evidence that Trump chose the timing and the subject of the First Battle of 2020 perfectly. We have a brand new Dem Congress that got elected raring to impeach, and now their first fight is going to be over Trump's strongest bipartisan issue, with the shutdown as backdrop. Good times.

Posted by: johns | January 11, 2019 at 02:01 PM
Trump may or may not be winning, MM2, but Dems warming to the emergency solution is not an indication that Trump is winning. The legislation that Trump would sign to reopen the government would remain in place even if the federal courts enjoin Trump from using federal funds from building the wall. In effect, everyone saves face. Schumer and Pelosi say they stood firm in the face of Trump's antics, and Trump says he took decisive action which, while stopped by a looney federal district court judge, will ultimately be vindicated by SCOTUS.

Thomas Collins,
I assume that President Trump and his lawyers also know this.
What I meant is that because some of the dems are looking at the emergency declaration as a way out, they are losing on this issue with their constituents, who do, indeed, want a wall.

I am shopping today but no snow here, just cold. I decided to take breakfast for my cousin's family tomorrow. I figured the morning after it would be helpful to get up and not need to think about food. I'm baking poppyseed bread, biscuits, and sending honey baked ham, fresh fruit, and orange juice.

Here's another tip, MM--you can get dog food, household supplies, pantry goods and more delivered to your door free--no membership required from Jet.com

Momto2,
That's good to know. One thing I learned is that I spend LESS because I don't impulse buy.
I always shop from a list but will still buy things that appeal to me.
St. Louis is supposed to get 9 inches of snow! Right now they are saying we could get up to 7 here.

Henry Cuellar is my Sisters' Congressman. My Sister is Conservative. My Niece got into the AIR FORCE ACADEMY because of Mr Cuellar.
My Niece was born in Texas, but her Dad was out of the country when my niece was Nominated. My Niece was at High School in LONDON.

This is not a bill to okay federal worker back pay for just *this* shutdown; it changes permanent law so that in any future shutdown, workers will be paid but told not to come to work. This is bad policy. It makes shutdowns more likely to happen and more likely to last longer.
Screw that. Anybody who voted for that should be primaried.
280 Republicans voted for basically 3+ weeks of free vacation for government union workers, which the rest of us taxpayers get to fund? Forget primarys - I want them all strung up.

old posts about Henry Cuellar -
2016 - https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2016/11/18/with-malicious-intent-obamas-homeland-security-shuts-down-aerial-surveillance-of-southern-border/
Rep Henry Cuellar wants to protect his constituency...good for him.
FTA - "Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, vows to challenge DHS’s move, saying Congress provided “full funding” for 2017. Cuellar, a member of the House Appropriations Committee and the Homeland Security Subcommittee, is drafting a letter to DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson protesting the shutdown."
2014 - https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/tom-blumer/2014/07/10/press-virtually-ignores-cuellars-hits-obamas-bizarre-actions-white
Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) speaking out for his constituents tells you something.
I wish there was more coverage of Latino American citizens that live, work, & own property in South Texas.
Do they want to take care of all these people from other countries? Are they okay with illegals coming through their ranches, their property?
THEY ARE NOT.
It is easy for rich people from far away to lecture on compassion....but it isn't their property being invaded. It isn't their children's schools being overwhelmed. It isn't their community flooded with citizens of other countries.

As for me. I am busy and quite pleased. You are a great friend.

MM2 and Porchlight, I think Trump ultimately wins in that his stance will help him in certain key states in 2020. I don't think there will be a substantial change in most individuals' opinions of Trump. And since so many GOPers don't aggressively support Trump on this, I don't think it will be a game changer in the 2020 Senate and House races.
Still, if exit polls show this was the key factor in Trump topping Liz Warren in Pennsylvania, Michigan, New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Ohio and retaining the POTUSey, that would constitute a win.
