Good afternoon! A new Congress! At least we didn't have to watch Biden groping the wives and daughters.
daddy, when the daughter was here over Christmas,I mentioned that the Alaska reps had a press conference after your big earthquake. I said,Don Young looks like a guy who would represent Alaska. She laughed and said,oh yeah. He once held a knife to Boehner's throat!
So once this new brand of socialism (that's rich, aint it?) runs of out Maggie Thatcher's "OPM-- other peoples money", will it stagger off into a ditch and die; or, will it morph once a new medium of exchange rises from the ashes?
Henry, the myth is that our side is investigating anything done wrong by the D's in the last ten years at all and the idiots are we (me included in that "we") who fell for the lie that they would and that they were. Somebody decided not to "go there" but to not tell us it was a mirage. Why, I will never know, but they put the country at even greater risk by giving them all passes for obvious crimes against the Constitution.
OL, yes. And the sources say Whitaker told Meese over lunch... did they speak in Klingon? This whole notion of bringing past swamp creatures to justice is a bigger scam than ACA.where ya gonna go to get your stature of limitations back?
Henry, I am of a mind that Trump and we would have been better off if on Jan 20, 2017 he had pulled a Jerry Ford and made a clear statement that we were turning a new page and that nothing done by the Clintons or Obamas prior to that date would be investigated, period. That he was assuring the American public right then and there that from noon, Jan 20, 2017, the government would be run by the book and any deviation by his administration, or any continuing crimes by previous office holders, would bear the full weight the law could apply. Then he should have fired every single holdover effective that date.
Stumbled across some guy on the radio last night claiming that Ultima Thule was obviously an alien structure and could possibly be hostile. I brought the radio over to my wife who confirmed it was the Face On Mars guy who was being interviewed.
No Moons discovered around Ultima Thule today, but the 2nd Panelist, the Moon Searcher, thinks that before the 2 bodies joined together they were probably orbiting around their common center much faster than their current speed. Says that they believe that when the 2 bodies touched they probably had a complete orbital rotation speed of 3 to 4 hours, instead of the current slower rotation rate of @15 hours. The most logical theory they currently have for that slow down to today's 15 hour orbital speed is due to tugging from a moon or 2 or 3, so that's what they are searching for. He explains the photographic techniques they are using to find a moon via hi-tech imaging, and he explains they are looking for something about a mile across in diameter and about 500 miles away.
He says they can currently see things about the size of a couple football fields in size within about 100 miles s of Ultima, and then they can see things beyond about 500 miles away, but there is a current visual gap between that 100-500 mile region that they'll have to wait for data from. He says that data won't be available for a couple weeks and only then can they complete the search for any possible moons of Ultima Thule.
1) His most important Priority is opening the Govt and his 2nd is that
2) Repubs need to compromise with the Dems
Amazing to me how on Day 1 of his new job, Repub Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has already said two things that tell me that from here on out it is not worth listening to a single word that comes out of his mouth.
As for the fireplace skill, the ecosystem for these devices includes so-called "skills" that can be added via the Amazon app. They're typically 3rd-party apps that do stock market, weather or many other things the native device doesn't do. All voice activated, but with the touch screen there's more capability. The new generation 2 device has both Amazon's native web browser as well as Firefox, so youtube videos can be viewed (unlike the older version after Google restricted it), as well as anything else you can do with a browser.
Along with Amazon Prime Music, and I guess Amazon Prime Video (which I haven't tried), it's the most capable Echo device.
Then he should have fired every single holdover effective that date.

Newt said, at the time, that if Trump didn't completely fire tons and tons of Federal workers to drain the Swamp within about 2 weeks of taking office, that the moment would be lost and the Bureaucratic Swamp would strengthen it's hold on power, and this last opportunity to clean up DC would be lost---so NEWT minds think alike.

The Atmosphere expert gal is up. Starts by telling us that Pluto's thin atmosphere extended to about the height of 1 Pluto radius above the surface of Pluto. She explains how at Pluto they could detect the Atmosphere by observing the blocking, bending and slowing of the Solar Wind behind and around planet Pluto. Since Ultima is so tiny they cannot rely on that technique anywhere nears as effectively though they are trying. She says they are now looking at the back side of Ultima towards the Sun, with the same sensitive detectors they used at Pluto, trying to see variations in the coronal something or other that might show dust or any hint of atmosphere around Ultima, but that data, like all the rest, will take quite sometime to arrive and be definitive.

Damn if Justify didn't get my blood pressure up tonight. I wanted Raylan to put that ass Quarles down but at least he got laid by the barkeep. I have no idea how all this turns out but I do not think Quarles survives but Bo Crowder does as the fool in King Lear.
A 75 year old is an alcoholic and has been one for many years. Her husband of 55 years died suddenly a year ago, she has been thru many rehab things for many years, but has not and does not want to quit. She lives alone and can support herself.
Her son wants to get a guardianship and move her to NJ. That will clearly not end her alcoholism. It will, however, end her freedom.
Her house is spotless, she is a good cook, and she wants to stay where she is for the rest of her life, which is probably not long.
So who would you support? Her or her son? And why?
If she is of a sound mind, can take care of herself and can live alone, under what justification would he even get a guardianship?
Just cuz she likes to drink?
Good heavens, Jane, if she can perform as a basic citizen as an alcoholic, let her be! That spotless house shows she has no trouble managing her life, despite the drinking. And even if her house was messy and she was a lousy cook, I'd say let her be unless she was a danger to herself and/or others.
Head Scientist Alan says that tomorrow the Spacecraft goes behind the Sun so there will be a pause in downlinks of Data until 10 January.
A sharp Space Reporter asks this question: ...various models of how the Solar System developed. I'm just wondering if there's anything that you've seen so far, from the totality of the mission, that would speak towards the accuracy of the Nice Model of Solar System Development, how Uranus and Neptune really perturbed the Kuiper Belt...and is it still fair to say that those 2 giant Ice-Planets are the main reasons why the Kuiper Belt didn't really accrete into something more significant than we see in the planets that are there?
Don Young won his first election over Mark Begich's dad's dead body.
Mark Begich couldn't even win his second election over Ted Stevens dead body, and don't get me started on Lisa's appointment by her Dad, Governor Frank Murkowski
I do think though that Don Young is the only guy up here who could survive politically after saying on a radio show that he has a lot of buddies who are "wetbacks."
"Jeff Flake: GOP ‘in for a rough ride in 2020 if we don’t make some changes’"
The change that is needed IMO, is quit letting the the Democrats use voter fraud 24/7 to elect their candidates and to do it now, Don't try to do it at the time of the election. The California 2018 vote IMO, was a trial run and they will try it all over in 2020 unless they are stopped. Mail in ballots, only when needed, and ID cards proving who legal voters are have to be done now.
I'm curious: what is your definition of an alcoholic? I've heard anything from anyone who drinks alone to one who downs a pint (or more!) of liquor a day.
A family friend had a (German!) father who downed a case of beer a day. You'd never know it from his behavior. Was he an alcoholic?
Democrats’ bill to end the partial government shutdown doesn’t include wall funding but does include $5 million dollars for a UN program that supports abortions overseas. This is a stunt by Nancy Pelosi.

Jack,
I agree. Who else is on that committee? Think I will go look.
Posted by: MissMarple2 | January 03, 2019 at 07:27 PM
Damn if Justify didn't get my blood pressure up tonight. I wanted Raylan to put that ass Quarles down but at least he got laid by the barkeep. I have no idea how all this turns out but I do not think Quarles survives but Bo Crowder does as the fool in King Lear.
Posted by: Jim Eagle | January 03, 2019 at 07:27 PM
Ok, I'd like to know your opinion.
And why?
Posted by: Jane | January 03, 2019 at 07:33 PM
If she is of a sound mind, can take care of herself and can live alone, under what justification would he even get a guardianship?
Just cuz she likes to drink?
Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | January 03, 2019 at 07:36 PM
Good heavens, Jane, if she can perform as a basic citizen as an alcoholic, let her be! That spotless house shows she has no trouble managing her life, despite the drinking. And even if her house was messy and she was a lousy cook, I'd say let her be unless she was a danger to herself and/or others.

I side with the mother.

Leave her where she is, Jane. If she is going to continue hitting the sauce but is no danger to anyone but herself, "No harm, no foul."

What the hell are you talking aoubt. Bo is stil with us on season 3?
jane,
She is what is called a functioning alcholic. Let her be. I have known some who you can tallk to and never realise they are drunk.
Posted by: Jim Eagle | January 03, 2019 at 07:46 PM
I’ll add my .02. Leave the nice drunken lady alone. Maybe an outing to the liquor store.
Posted by: Gentlejim | January 03, 2019 at 07:46 PM
Her husband was probably the only reason to be concerned about her juicing.

Head Scientist John: That's a very good question.

Don Young is still the first Duke of Anchorage?

Posted by: pagar | January 03, 2019 at 07:58 PM
Jane,
I'm curious: what is your definition of an alcoholic? I've heard anything from anyone who drinks alone to one who downs a pint (or more!) of liquor a day.
A family friend had a (German!) father who downed a case of beer a day. You'd never know it from his behavior. Was he an alcoholic?

Good to know
U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D.
@SenBillCassidy
Democrats’ bill to end the partial government shutdown doesn’t include wall funding but does include $5 million dollars for a UN program that supports abortions overseas. This is a stunt by Nancy Pelosi.

Nobody has a good definition of alcoholism. Unless someone believes they have a problem, it's mostly defined by other people.
Multiple DUIs are a good indicator.
Posted by: Captain Hate | January 03, 2019 at 08:06 PM
narciso is right. Bo Crowder is Boyd Crowder's father.
I didn't care for Justified. It had some witty banter but it was too violent & the depravity was too much.
One episode had a McCain/Palin sign in the home/shop of one of the bad guys.
Posted by: Account Deleted | January 03, 2019 at 08:08 PM
JiB,
Not pleased about that one bit. Politics and law enforcement are not a good mix.

Dr J, I thunk she would call herself that. But she certainly is functioning although a little whacked although a lot of that seems to be because of people trying to take away her freedom. She probably hasn't got along time left, and I will probably be blamed, but I think it's the right thing.
Posted by: Jane | January 03, 2019 at 08:16 PM
Yes it's a multigenerational issue. Raylan is quite well adjusted considering the milieu in which he grew up. Boyd Is a scoundrel kind of like powers boothe in extreme prejudice.

GJ,
Just pulling your chain. My Uncle was killed in the line of duty. He was chiief of police in a suburb of Cincy. Chased a bank robber on his motorcycle. Never made it home. Two cousins who are (or were) PO's. My older cousn was the top FBI polygroph examiner. Long list of family PO's.
You stay safe. We have your back.

Inguneers: I never gave a crap about getting the ‘ticket’ because it only affected signing plans for stuff some gummint needed to approve. Most of my stuff was not decipherable by even a lot of other engineers. Not particularly bragging, just weird stuff that only a handful of others would care about. Way more fun that way.
Purging the Left Coast: we can prolly handle a 50’ tsunami which should pretty well wipe out the blue trash on the mainland. After that, a little careful pruning locally should keep our islands from caring about politics for quite awhile. We prolly will lose our marina. I only gave a few feet of piling excess when I laid it out figuring that anything really big would take it all out anyway.

My son is a gadget freak--he has everything in his house set on Alexa--turning the lights on and off for example in all the house, or room by room, or part of rooms. Je jas a kitchen so full of new tech stuff--steam ovens and regular ovens that inject steam--I can hardly fry an egg in theere wihtout looking thru a batch of instruction books. Even his car is one of those teslas with a self-driving option. I feel like the uncle in that old French film Mon Oncle when he goes to visit relatives in a then-super modern house with every then known gizmo.

A certain brittleness is setting in.
Where I could previously easily respond to leftists and leftist politicians, I find the urge more and more to resort to BS and FU.
Civility seems no longer the proper response to the misuse of language.

/OT update. During her nerve block Mrs. sbw felt an “explosion” of pain that suggests we may be homing in on the place where a modest skiving of a bulging disc might help. Yay!
And for all you out there with 97-year-old mothers, what you plan can go south easily. Their reality is different than yours. Still you care for them. She is where she needs to be. Good for her.
And a double bourbon is therapeutic.

Jane, that is a TAP IN. Her son wants XYZ.
Cutting directly to the chase, as is my CUSTOM.
I'd tell her son...."How about, FUCK YOU".
This woman doesn't need her son's permission for anything, and her "Son", has no right to control her, unless she is incapable of taking CARE of herself. The fact that she's been drinking....DRINKING.....or MAY "MAY" even be an ALCOHOLIC is not any indication of being INCAPACITATED. The mere fact that she's been drinking and FUNCTIONING for all these years, should be a FEATURE, not a BUG.
Maybe we should have her sons ONLINE PORN situation investigated.
For heavens sake, she's FREE to live her life as she see's fit.

“weird stuff that only a handful of others would care about”
Sounds like the first half of my career MT.

it's your friendly bluebird of happiness with this gracious public service announcement about f*cking firewater---- :D here goes:
alcohol is a selectively addicting depressant.
bottom line: processing huge amounts of sugar everyday from drinking affects brain magnets and their function. period.
people are generally not kind when deprived of their daily minimums due to circumstances beyond their control. the sugar lift is important, if not crucial in order to "relax" (the sugar comedown).
the adage by the daily drinker: "i'm the same whether i drink or not, have 4 or 2, i'm the same." yeah. bullshit. ask your kinfolk and friends.
re the alleged alcoholism: once *HER* life becomes unmanageable *DUE DIRECTLY TO* alcohol consumption, then *SHE* decides whether to make any change to recover.
at 75 if she hasn't got a liver the size of a canoe, odds are in her favor that she'll have one last nightcap and go quietly in the night. a bad liver due to alkeeism is slow painful death.
the son is beset by his needless worry. find a way to be sure her affairs are in order. then let her "take her place with grace and be on her way." a son's only duty.
leave her be.
PS: i'm the only alcoholic i will ever KNOW. :D

Jane, I had a friend whose dad was a doctor specializing in treatment oof the elderly who said the worst part of his job was telling them to stop drinking or smoking as that was one of their few remaining pleasures in life and after a while he stopped pestering them about that. BTW at 77 I hardly consider that gal an oldster.
