Darn! I just posted on the previous thread about the New Jersey man who went to Maine to carve a peace sign into the giant ice disc on the Presumpscot River. The man was shown on social media by people who wanted to get a look at the disc before it melts. The man (Christopher Angulo) told WGME TV CBS-13 that he wanted to create a giant sign and create a visual for the world to see. He walked onto the ice disc with an axe and he started to crack the ice. According to the New York Daily News, this man was put into a psychiatric ward in 2013 after a stunt in which he climbed a storm damaged roller coaster in coastal NJ to plant an American flag. Another crazy gets his 15 minutes.

Shutdown continues: Senate blocks bills to fund government amid fight over Trump border wall

A GOP-backed measure to fund Trump's border wall and offer limited legal protections for some immigrants failed in a 50-47 vote. Three senators — Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republicans Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Mike Lee of Utah — broke with their parties.

What happened here? Why were there only 97 Senators voting, and why did Lee and Cotton vote against it?

A plan supported by Democrats fared better, but still fell short in a 52-44 vote. Six Republican senators supported it: Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Susan Collins of Maine, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Johnny Isakson of Georgia, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Mitt Romney of Utah.

Here only 96 Senators voted.

Btw, were these cloture votes?

WANT TO BE RECOGNIZED AS TRANSGENDER IN JAPAN? BE READY TO GET STERILIZED

People suffering from gender dysphoria in Japan must be sterilized before they can change official documents to reflect the gender of their choosing rather than biological sex.

A panel of judges unanimously upheld a ruling Wednesday stating that individuals identifying as transgender must have “no reproductive glands or reproductive glands that have permanently lost function,” if they seek to change official records displaying sex, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

Four judges upheld the decision, ruling that the law was constitutional. The law also insists that persons wishing to change official documentation must look like the gender with which they identify. Transgender persons seeking document changes must have “a body which appears to have parts that resemble the genital organs of those of the opposite gender,” the law states, according to AFP.

Unfortunately, they have no balls."

Some of them might understand some of those things, Gus, but I would not attribute enough of them to enough of them to consider the GOP as a group any different from the Dems.

And to say they simply have no balls is too nice to them. Understanding whatever they do or don't, almost none of them possess the character to stand on those principles which they might "understand" but do not themselves possess.

They all just take turns holding the beers as they take turns "pulling the train" on the taxpayers. (a phrase I did not know before AOC used it last week)

ZH, according to CNN:

White House Drafting National Emergency Proclamation To Include $7B For Border Wall

According to the plans, the administration could use $681 million from treasury forfeiture funds, $3.6 billion in military construction, $3 billion in Pentagon civil works funds and $200 million in funds from the Department of Homeland Security.

If Trump declares a national emergency, the US Army Corps of Engineers would construct the wall - which CNN then suggests might set the stage for potential lawsuits over eminent domain land seizures. The documents also convey a sense of urgency - as the draft reportedly allows for the wall to be built without environmental reviews, while DHS would be able to bypass contracting laws using waivers.

This is an update from the Portland Press Herald because we need some comic relief. :)
The man's name is Christopher Angelo, age 44. Angelo said he had set up underwater cameras and wanted to take core samples of the ice. He said he has a degree in biology and wants to get his master's degree in ice disks. He put a pickax,a hatchet, an umbrella,a tarp and a chainsaw on an inflatable raft. At one point he fell in the river up to his waist, but worked free of the ice. The Westbrook police said it is not against the law to chop ice,but the incident was "unusual."
Ha,there's some Maine understatement.

D

This is the perfect time for an emergency order.
President can say well the Dem House has gone home, not really concerned about you missing another paycheck.
I President Trump am here to end the shutdown and secure the border like I promised.

DrJ

I do not understand Trump's negotiating position. Yes, he will get some small part of his wall built. But the Dems do not appropriate money for it (their goal). The money will come largely from defense, and the Dems aren't going to increase DoD's funding either.

Why should they not be recalcitrant? They don't care about the partial shutdown other than as a negotiating tool.

D

DrJ:
The optics of this for Dems right now is bad.
It seems they don’t care about security for the country and the main focus is to stop the President.
Nobody is getting re-elected or elected on that platform.

Pic 2: (5 new copies):

Infuriating.

hrtshpdbox

But the Dems do not appropriate money for it (their goal)

Well, I guess Trump figures he'll certainly get any funding he needs after 2020, when the House is Republican again. Because a Republican House will certainly do the right thing.

(Does that read funny, or should I work on it more?)

MissMarple2

EGG-COOKING ALERT. Scroll on by unless interested.

I realize you old hands have hard-boiled egg-cooking down pat, using pans and timers and ice baths and your grandma's recipe. Well I just tried experimenting with my new Dash egg cooker's recommended amount of water for hard-cooked eggs.

No pan. No timer. No ice bath. (They recommend running under cold water after they're done, which worked great. Super easy to peel. I'm sure an ice bath would have been easier for more eggs and just as effective.)

The hard-cooked setting resulted in what I would describe as a medium-cooked egg, which was unfamiliar to me and really good. Smooth, creamy yolk consistency, not runny or hard, and the white was perfectly done.

Now I can increase the water amount to get harder-cooked eggs, or reduce it for softer ones, or use this amount for a superb breakfast egg.

I yield the floor.

On the way back from the Library caught Buck Sexton on the radio making a good point having to do with Trump possibly declaring a National Emergency to build the Wall.

He wanted Trump to go that route if all else fails, but he is hearing pushback from many Conservatives in media about how that would be a mistake because then precedence will be set and future Dem Presidents can point at Trump and declare the same for their pet agenda projects. He considered that a legitimate point but replies something like "Do you really think that any future Dem President will refrain from taking such action because Trump refrained from taking such action?" He then mentions Obama, who over 20 times in Public said he did not have the Constitutional Right to use his pen to create DACA, but then just went ahead and did it. And then Trump, under the logical assumption that Obama used an Executive Order to do this illegal thing, then he could use an Executive Order to undo this illegal thing, yet as soon as he did it he was stymied by Federal Judges. So Sexton asks rhetorically, "Where is this future Dem President that will not overstep his authority, regardless of if Trump declares this National Emergency to build the Wall?"

Decent points, decently stated. Build The Wall.

Extraneus

The money will come largely from defense, and the Dems aren't going to increase DoD's funding either.

The recently passed 2-yr defense budget significantly increased spending over the previous one. Here it says it increased $300B.

Being good Catholics the young couple find themselves sitting outside

When St. Peter finally showed up, they asked him.

St Peter said "I don't know. This is the first time anyone has asked.
Let me go find out" and he leaves them sitting at the Gate.

After three months, St Peter finally returns, looking somewhat
bedraggled. "Yes" he informs the couple " I can get you married in

"Great!" said the couple "But we were just wondering, what if things
don't work out? Could we also get a divorce in Heaven?"

"You must be bloody joking" says St. Peter, red-faced with
frustration, slamming his clipboard on the ground.

"What's wrong?" asked the frightened couple".

"OH, COME ON!" St. Peter shouted "It took me three months to find a

After the threat of legal action, Representative Omar has deleted a false and libelous statement from her Twitter feed related to the Covington Catholic high school students, and she has explained that it was an error due to forwarding false information. I have requested via Twitter that she make a formal written apology and post that on Twitter and other social media to clarify her full stance. Will keep you updated. Deleting the false and defamatory post is a welcome action from Representative Omar, although it does not exonerate her from the principal charge of promoting derogatory, insensitive and hateful communications, which disqualify her from holding public office.

...

Finally, I want to make crystal clear that this petition has NOTHING to do with Representative Ihlan’s professed faith or the Muslim religion generally. And PLEASE keep any derogatory or anti-Muslim comments off this petition. I myself am a Unitarian Universalist by tradition and along with Baha’i faith and other unitary theologies, we are very open to the lessons and teachings of other religions. I also believe fundamentally in the ability of people to change and mature, and it is my fervent hope that Representative Omar address the hate she has expressed.

TOMORROW FINALLY IS TODAY IN SOUTH AMERICA
Published January 24, 2019 | By Dr. Jack Wheeler

The old joke about Brazil – “It’s the country of tomorrow, and always will be” – applies to a tragic degree to the entire continent of South America. So much potential never realized, with the single exception of Chile.

Suddenly, literally overnight – meaning last night, Wednesday January 23 – the tomorrow that never comes has arrived at long last.

It’s like a massive earthquake with the pressure building up between two tectonic plates, building up, building up, then suddenly the plates slip with the surface of the earth shifting dramatically in an instant.

That just happened in Venezuela. In the blink of an eye, after Dictator Maduro gets himself re-inaugurated on January 10; the President of the National Assembly – 35 year-old Juan Guaidó who had assumed office just 5 days earlier – declares on January 15 that Maduro’s presidency is illegitimate and demands he resign; Maduro refuses – so yesterday (1/23) in front of a million people cheering for him in downtown Caracas, he swears himself in as President of Venezuela.

Within minutes – literally minutes– the governments of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Peru and others formally recognized Juan Guaidó as the legitimate President of Venezuela and Maduro as illegitimate, as did the United States of America.

What has happened is far bigger than Venezuela. It’s the death of Marxism in South America. And it’s thanks to President Donald Trump.

For he and his pro-capitalist economic policies of lowering taxes and taking a meat-axe to government regulations – resulting in the greatest jobs-and-growth boom in decades if not ever in the US – inspired Jair Bolsonaro to embrace the same resulting in his shocking-to-the-Left presidential victory in Brazil.

When the 800-pound gorilla of South America decides to go Capitalist Right, and to go after its enemies like Maduro, just about everyone else follows.

The question now is: Is this the death of the Castro dictatorship in Cuba?

Realize that it is Communist Cuba that has kept the Chavez-Maduro dictatorship in power. It is the Cuban Secret Police (SDE, State Security) who run the country, with some 27,000 agents, posing as police, doctors, teachers, etc. in place.

As the Wall Street Journal notes:

“Venezuela is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Cuba’s 59-year-old military dictatorship. Without the full support of Cuba’s sophisticated intelligence and advanced police-state methods, Venezuela’s chavismo would have been overthrown years ago.”

They won’t go peacefully. The Anti-Communist Revolution in Venezuela just started in the last 24 hours. It will end successfully only if every Cuban SDE agent either suffers mortal vigilante justice or runs for their lives back to Cuba.

Note how every dirtbag dictator on the planet is supporting Maduro: Putin’s Russia, the Chicoms, Turkey’s Erdogan, Iran’s Mullahs.

Note also they’ve been greasing the palms of all the generals in the Venny Military to guarantee their support for Maduro, which they did today (1/24): Venezuela’s Military Backs Maduro. On the other hand, the soldiers and junior officers have been neither bribed nor paid, are starving and hate Maduro.

Despite all of this, it’s hard to see Maduro surviving politically (and physically unless he escapes and lands in exile in Havana) with the massive international alliance against him, including his giant neighbor Brazil.

Further, yesterday (1/23), Maduro ordered all US diplomats to leave the country within 72 hours. Secretary of State Pompeo promptly issued a statement declaring the US will not comply:

“The United States maintains diplomatic relations with Venezuela and will conduct our relations with Venezuela through the government of interim President Guaido, who has invited our mission to remain in Venezuela. The United States does not recognize the Maduro regime as the government of Venezuela. Accordingly the United States does not consider former president Nicolas Maduro to have the legal authority to break diplomatic relations with the United States or to declare our diplomats persona non grata.

We call on the Venezuelan military and security forces to continue protecting the welfare and well-being of all Venezuelan citizens, as well as U.S. and other foreign citizens in Venezuela… The United States will take appropriate actions to hold accountable anyone who endangers the safety and security of our mission and its personnel.”

Note the undeniable implication of that last sentence. Arrest and hold our diplos hostage and we send in the Marines. And they won’t be alone. No doubt whatever Brazilian and Columbian military forces will be with them.

Bottom line. It may get messy, but Maduro and his Chavista regime is toast. With it, so is Marxism and Leftism as an ideological force in South America. Tin-pot dictator of Bolivia, Evo Morales, will do a quick el foldo. Then come those of Ecuador. That’s just mopping-up.

Make no mistake. Immediately after this, the Castro regime will be in the laser-dot gunsights of Trump and Bolsonaro. This impossibly communist evil on our doorstep 90 miles away has been crushing the freedom of the Cuban people for sixty years – since January 1959.

It is far past time to sweep it into the dustbin of history. That moment is soon to come. Tomorrow is finally becoming today.

I see that Octavio Cortes says the world will end in 12 years. I think that pronouncement is the best proof we have of the Multiple Universe Theory.

The genius Prince Charles was correct when he said the world would end by 2010 if we didn't save it. There must have been a Universe where such truthfulness destroyed the Earth in 2010, we just happened to live in an illogical universe where it didn't. Whew!

Likewise genius Al Gore effectively explained how the world would end by 2016. It would be an inconvenient truth to suggest his biting logic was illogical, ergo the Earth mush have been destroyed in 2016, just not in our current particular irrational Universe. Whew, again!

I feel terrible for the you and me who have been destroyed in those other universes, and especially for the you and me who live in that other Universe where snowfall is a thing of the past. It must suck over there to not be hanging out on the slopes with Snow Bunnies, and who can imagine all the suntan lotion they must be daubing on themselves in that Universe's Davos summit:(

So I take Octavio Cortes's prediction that the world will end in 12 years as Gospel. The Earth will undoubtedly end in the year 2030, but I just hope that the Earth that ends in 2030 is in a different Universe. I hope the one that ends is the Earth powered by Unicorn farts and where ObamaCare reduced everybodies Health Costs by $2,500.

Cuomo just defined the next election. The Dems are baby killers who are perfectly willing to murder Grandma with a drug cocktail and let MS 13's run wild in your neighborhood.

I am uncertain what the Military is doing in Venezuela, but John Bolton just said this to Trish Regan---My transcript:

Bolton: ...literally civil society in Venezuela is collapsing which is why the stakes are so high here, and why President Trump did extend recognition to the interim President in the National Assembly as the real Constitutional Authority. If we miss this chance I think most observers think it could be a long time before the Venezuelan people are going to be free.

Trish: ...we missed these opportunities before... because there was a time when Ugo Chavez was overthrown for a couple of days, but eventually the Military sided with him, so let me ask you about where we are right now. Nicholas Maduro allegedly has the support of his Military. If he has the Military, where does that leave President Guaido, the Opposition, and Assembly members...?

Bolton: I don't think Maduro has the Military. He has statements by his Minister of Defense who owes his job to Maduro. I think the average service member is very much on the side of Juan Guaido, the interim President. I think the Military is still up in the air. I think the fact they have stayed in their barracks these last 30 hours now shows that they're not necessarily...Maduro can't count on them to follow his orders. So there are extensive discussions going on by Members of The National Assembly with the Military, which is still very much in play, and it's one reason why today here in Washington we have been looking at ways to disconnect Maduro from the Financial resources he needs to pay the Military and otherwise keep himself in power. That could be a very effective way we think of helping the legitimate Government.

I'll bet there'll be 2 copies in your local Library before summertime and 4 copies in mine.

You'd lose. I'll set myself a note on my calendar to check the catalog on 6/20. You're talking about the closest branch, right?

We're not all keto all of the time, as I have said. Tonight we made pizza on garlic Naan bread and it's pretty great. With a small glass of Nocking Point Cabernet Sauvingnon.

We used to carry a fish bat on our boat. When we landed larger fish like dorado or tuna, a few quick blows to the head settled things down . I think that is our next step. Non-lethal force and mockery.

I presume the Acosta book will be in the children's stories section?
