I was trying to compare Mr Pin's stories with Jack's stories of restaurants, college visits, dogs, workplace/family reminiscences.
I think Mr Pin's are more literary and composed with a certain flair and style.
JiB's are more conversational, aimed perhaps at JOMers who've met him personally.
There's a person I have interacted with several times in Nashville. This person has a female first name and a Greek last name and by all appearances is a chubby lesbian woman. The thing is, she has facial hair going on that I don't understand. "She" looks a lot like Peter Sellers in Murder by Death.
...epidemiological and translational evidence presented in this review indicates that continuous exposure of humans to exosomes of pasteurized milk may confer a substantial risk for the development of chronic diseases of civilization including obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, common cancers (prostate, breast, liver, B-cells) as well as Parkinson's disease. Exosomes of pasteurized milk may represent new pathogens that should not reach the human food chain.
That sounds like a load of crap. Of course we need to remember that milk is a gateway to substance abuse; fruity drinks, carbonated sugar-based sodas, carbonated alcoholic beverages like beer, wine and whiskey.
The mere act of suckling, or drinking, leads to all kinds of destructive behavior.
Thank god I woke to the evils of milk and only use it to flavor my morning Lipton Tea.
I'm sure that's happened thousands of times in human history, but that it is happening today, apparently in not insignificant numbers, is a bit startling, especially amidst all the Global hype of #BringBackOurGirls.
If we pick the Jews as a starter population that is enslaved, first under Pharaoh in @1200 BC, then under the Babylonian Exile for @ a hundred years until Cyrus frees them about 540 BC, they actually are the odd man out in the Slave scenario, since they're the first population that was able to maintain their separate identity as Jews away from their homeland, something virtually no other mass people had done as far as we know prior to the Jews, and of course they've had thousands of years now in practicing that geographical separation since:) Pretty much every other enslaved bunch prior to them IIRC amalgamated or disappeared.
The Sabine Women, stolen by the early Romans in @700BC, fit the bill of those who were given a choice but acquiesced to their new lives and husbands.
The Janissaries (@1400-1850 AD) as I recall were young captured Christian children forced to convert to the Islam of their masters, but I also had the impression they were turned into eunuchs, and prevented from returning to their previous lives, in much the same way that the Chinese eunuched subservient populations, a good example being their great 14th Century Admiral, Zheng He---his parents murdered and him neutered, but then sent to the Imperial Court as a servant who rose by ability. But I don't see either of those cases as having opportunities to return to their previous lives and deciding not to, or after having returned to their previous lives, deciding then to go back to serving under their enslaving masters.
I recall The Unredeemed Captive as a great example in early American History of Massachusetts settlers kidnapped by Mohawks and one of their number refusing to return. I also recall reading where some of the white women captured by American Indians and also by Australian Aborigines deciding to stay with their captors, yet offering reasons like their new children, or the body scarring their new cultures had subjected them to had made them unacceptable as returnees to their previous "civilized" societies---that sort of stuff.
I know we have the cases you hear about of freed slaves after the Civil War allegedly returning to their former masters and asking to be taken back in since they knew nothing else. And the Stockholm Syndrome captors, and Patty Hearst, both eventually siding with those who kidnapped and held them captive. I'm sure there are scads more examples of such occurrences throughout human history but off the top, in recent history, I don't recall lots of cases of what this story is trying to get us to believe is going on. Obviously the media will love pushing a story like this so I have to say I'm very skeptical of it, and I would like to see the breakdown in the overall numbers of those who supposedly have made this decision compared to those who are glad as hell to be out of the clutches of the raping and murdering thugs of Boko Haram. Certainly an interesting topic.
I have a pet theory that’s probably garbage but that I like anyway.
There are things people have been eating and drinking for millennia. Bread, butter, eggs, meats, etc. If it were fundamentally bad for you, we would have genetically selected away from it.
It’s how I rationalize my wine and cheese consumption.
Makes sense. Read an article tonight about food allergies. Allergies always trigger an immune response. Things your stomach doesn't like, or can't process aren't allergies, but food intolerances. If you don't get an immune response, but suffer from gastro-intestinal turmoil, it's not life-threatening, but something you should still avoid.
Over time, our ancestors would have avoided such foods, and, today, we find things we should avoid for personal reasons.
I can't process fat. I'm Jack Sprat. I thoroughly masticate my food and fat just won't reduce by chewing it.
So I spit it out. My stomach wouldn't process it anyway.
Read the highlighted parts of the letter to US Atty Huber, wondering why he has not interviewed tons of guys he should have interviewed if he was doing a legitimate investigation.
"The drug epidemic has cost a great number of lives, and the federal government must stop the flow of drugs by building a border wall, and by using new technologies to detect intrusion into the U.S."
Additionally, Last year at our Southern Border, DHS encountered more than 3,000 “special interest aliens”—individuals with suspicious travel patterns who may pose a national security risk—not to mention the many criminals, smugglers, traffickers, and other threat actors who try to exploit our borders.
CH, where I might differ with you a bit on this is that while it is risky, with something as high profile as the FBI or CIA, there is potentially a big up side, since for many people you'd be a hero, and it's hard to believe there wouldn't be great opportunities opening up for you.
Chad Joy would beg to differ. He's out of a job for doing the right thing (in fairness he might have been a poor employee, although there's no evidence of that other than obviously being a misfit in a corrupt FBI) and hardly anyone even knows who he is (way to go, MFM). I think he's Exhibit A in why there aren't more agents coming forward.
I'm frankly surprised that I seem to be an outlying point on feeling this way.
I thought the road trip comments were great. I enjoyed hearing about Pin's meetup with Laura especially, but also with GUS and henry.
Lighten up, dude. Get a browser that does Killfile and just ignore who you don't like. What's the point of confrontations?

I haven’t used killfile in a long time, I don’t read all the travelogues but I don’t mind them.
They help us tread water on slow news days and I have learned a lot from /OT conversations.
Since some find the /OT bothersome, I really do recommend killfile as a personal answer that does not deflect participation.

Reposting for JiB's convenience.
Translation: those are polite ways--from long time JOMers, please note--of saying "it's you, not them."
Sorry if bluntness offends, but we know who you are in real life. So do all these folks you are lashing out at. There could be real consequences if you piss off the wrong person.
Reread what you posted Sunday evening. You basically called everyone "a basket of deplorables." Not to mention you aren't even naming the correct poster who pissed you off.
You may be happier hanging out at Althouse. Retired U WI Con Law prof, who likes to think she is "cruelly neutral" in her analysis of --everything. (Her commenters frequently correct that notion.)
But no denying she's got a set of skills.
She moderates comments, so you will not find stories of menus, wines, lost beagles or children (or killer carbs, or Thermomixes, or whatever lights your fuse) in the discussion of what FLOTUS's jacket means. She also has "cafes" where one is allowed to discuss such matters. (I assume; I've actually never opened a cafe post.)
But the vast majority of her commenters see the world from the vantage point of JOM commenters, bring many backgrounds to the table, and flesh things out.
Links are not as frequent, for whatever reason.
A regular reader will find the occasional Ralph L and (amazingly understandable--ALWAYS! Why IS that, narc??) narciso post there, and I do believe the rare jimmy k comment.
A woman who used to hang on JOM--?Dust Bunny Queen?--posts there as well. Whoever it is, she was before my time, but has been mentioned w fondness here.
Althouse commenting, just like JOM, has changed character over the time I've read it. The Leftists have pretty much moved on, as have most of the NeverTrumpers as well. So have people who I found spot on and quite clever in noting her total cluelessness re: the real world--she was soo stereotypically the sheltered academic prior to marrying one of her commenters ?maybe six years ago. She now bikes, cross country skis, and even leaves town upon occasion. In a car. No airplanes for the professor!
I think they got blacklisted by hubby. He's a traditional guy; didn't like seeing his girl made fun of, I guess.
So, not as much back and forth in the comments as she has come to see the light herself over time and the progs think she's betrayed them by pointing out the endless fallacies in their thinking, but it's not because it's not allowed. They left her.
PS--My invite for dry January stands. May do Lent as well. Anybody/everybody welcome!

Seriously though, where Cap'n does have a point is that many more troops in the FBI et al would come forward with me-too horror stories if they thought a sea change at the top had in fact occurred. That is one of the very predictable consequences of a White Knight charging in promising a restoration of L&O only to put steady as she goes leaders like Sessions and Wray in charge of the cleanup...while the White Knight tweets about how rotten things are over there and looks the other way as if somebody else is the CEO.
You get it, OL. I'm tired of getting lit up by all these pie in the sky predictions about heads rolling in the DOJ based on nothing tangible. I'll admit that I expected DJT to take more of an interest in terms of how the skullduggery was aimed at him and his family but actual results thus far are very disappointing.
What I said yesterday...it is not that they just don't know what we know or they don't understand the consequences like we understand...they like it this way and want more of it.
That's exactly it.
The part the leftists DON'T know, because they don't learn or care about history, is that once they are fully in power, THEY will be the targets, because there's only so much room at the top, and most of them will have to go back to being peasants, or get shipped off to the gulags, where they will live out their days muttering "if only Stalin knew..."
re: Althouse - she truly amazes me, in one sense. She has a real gift for being remarkably irritating in her writing style, so that even when I am in total agreement with her, I still can't stand what she's got to say.
Alexander Tytler explained his theory of that cycle in 1775 or so, James. He was right then and he is right now.
The proof of their attraction to Crack is how they rejected so emphatically the astounding reality of Trump Economy numbers in less than two years to give the Power of the Purse right back to their dealers in the form of the House. Even without a correction or a pull back, the mantra is going to be "more, harder" in 2020. Not going to be, is.

I was discussing those statistics about terrorists apprehended along the southern border ("just" 6 in the first half of 2018, NBC sneered) with my son.
I had mentioned to my daughter the other day that I had concern about terrorists infiltrating the caravans and also hiring smugglers, and she refused to believe me. She is concerned I am listening to scaremongers and such.
My son found that number alarming, because he wanted to know how many did NOT get caught. He used to have a sales job that required a lot of travelling to small towns, and he says people from around here (like my dughter) don't realize how vast and empty the southwest desert is, and how hard it would be for the Border Patrol to catch every single illegal border crosser.
I was discussing those statistics about terrorists apprehended along the southern border ("just" 6 in the first half of 2018, NBC sneered)
The response to whichever NBC spokesmodel sneered about "just 6" terrorists whould be:
"So you're OK with 6 more Boston Marathon bombings? Or 6 more Fort Hood shootings? Or 6 more Pulse nightclub massacres? You feel that's an acceptable price for American citizens to pay for your preferred immigration policies?"

AB,
Makes sense.
My stomach wouldn't process it anyway.

daddy, it's only Wikipedia but a short intro to Janissaries.

Circumcised but not eunuchs. Taken at an age not so different than "our girls", certainly many with memories of their birth families.
The whole topic is fascinating.

I assume these are facts rejected by Pelosi:

Lighten up, dude. Get a browser that does Killfile and just ignore who you don't like. What's the point of confrontations?
Posted by: Extraneus | January 07, 2019 at 08:00 PM

One percenters paid 40% of all Fed Income Taxes.
20% paid almost 90% (88) of all Fed Income Taxes.
Dems want them to pay their fair share.
And they don't like the jobs and pay raises Trump has created so they want US Corporations to pay 33% more Fed Income tax from now on.
And we wonder why the Left has so so many people who just love the crack they sell to the masses.
