Happy birthday Marlene! Did I interpret your comment correctly? :)

Ext, and they wonder why I take the position that there never was any intention to establish the rule of law, equal for all, in the new USA, by Trump or anybody else. It was all just theater to win our votes and passions.

Howie talking to Corey Lewandowski as to what happens next.

Lewandowski says he thinks Trump will:

1) Order the Military to build the Wall.
2) Within 24 hours a Federal Judge will issue a stay on Trump's order.
3) Then it will go to the Supreme's and we'll sit around and wait.

Sounds like a likely scenario to me.

But Cap'n, it's not just POTUS. Two years in, Trump is still just the Lone Ranger fighting for us. If we had enough serious patriots among the 535 elected members of Congress, we would not be hoping that Super Hero Trump can save us at the last minute. That is too much hope to put on one good man, not unlike hoping to win the lottery to solve a cash crunch at the kitchen table.

I tried to tell you guys that two or three decades lunching at the Metropolitan Club makes ALL of these DC political lawyers best friends. These two are just taking their turns on the stage.

As an outsider himself, and having been burned (we were told) by Sessions who lunched in an even more swamp like club - the Senate Dining Room - Trump knew what he was doing in naming Barr for the second round. Daddy, I wish our side would stop pretending that the current fight is about "Funding the Border Wall". This fight is just to get chump change to build a tiny part of the wall so that both sides can make a few political points with one group of the other. The Left could give in 100% today and the wall would barely get started before they kill it in 2021. Dems know that but they want the votes from their base. Sadly Trump knows that too, be he too wants the votes from HIS base, and he hopes our side is too dumb to ask about the other 2000 miles not being funded.

I don't think the military would be limited to $5.7B, OL. I also don't think that Trump is being two-faced about this. Pretty sure he really means to stop illegals coming in from Mexico, whether it's for vain and selfish purposes or not.

Someone else picked up on his use of the term "illegal migrants" last night. I believe that was a first. They're not "immigrants," because immigrants are legal by definition.

I'll admit, though, that I was surprised at the $5.7B figure when he first mentioned it. Chump change. Did he have a plan to get more if they caved on the figure, or did he low-ball it on purpose in order to maneuver them into his preferred end-game? I don't think that's beyond his capability as a negotiator or strategist.

Old Lurker

Ext, if the total cost is going to be $25-$30B, that is a lot of jet engine parts for the military to go without. The only value of the military is as a short term stunt to get started. No POTUS is going to build that wall if Congress doesn't want it. This POTUS is not going to be given enough time in office to sneak it in regardless of the soundness of his logic for it.

One would have thought that the stunning economic progress that Trump has accomplished would have made him bullet proof in the Mid Terms and in Congress. That he is not even able to control the leaders of his own party is proof how the old calculus no longer applies.

That is why I said to Cap'n that the population is the enemy, like Pogo said.

Facts carry very little weight, even if they are clearly stated and proven.

MM,we go to Maine in the summer. We have a cabin in the woods north of Bangor. We are isolated from what is going on in the larger cities downstate. The situation in Lewiston is interesting. Last summer,a man was beaten to death at a park in Lewiston. I'm not making judgements, but the man and his friends (white people) weren't exactly upstanding citizens. The park is the turf of a certain immigrant group and the situation devolved. The dead man's friends just recently tried to have a gathering at the park and another incident happened. The problem is that law enforcement and media walk on eggshells around any incidents that occur
in the immigrant community. Lewiston is one of many New England cities that was populated by French Canadians that worked in the textile and shoe factories. There is a strong Catholic tradition that is slowly changing. I really doubt that assimilation is going to happen.

The party that worked so hard to convince people that Catholics and Knights of Columbus like Al Smith and John F. Kennedy could be both good Catholics and good public servants shows an alarming disregard of its own history in making such attacks today.

We must call this out for what it is – religious bigotry. This is true not just when such prejudice is anti-Catholic, but also when it is anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, anti-Hindu, or anti-Protestant, or any other religion.

Ext, if the total cost is going to be $25-$30B, that is a lot of jet engine parts for the military to go without.

Anything Trump takes from the DOD budget to pay for the border wall wouldn't come from appropriated funds for specific weapons programs. My guess is he would take it from the $69 billion allocated for overseas contingency operations. With a troop drawdown in Syria and Afghanistan we probably won't need that original amount of funding anymore.

According to Hawaii News Now, the public flame war is highly unusual among the state’s federal delegation. Sen. Hirono’s office issued the following statement in response to Rep. Gabbard’s op-ed:

“Senator Hirono, asks all judicial nominees – particularly those who have expressed very strong personal ideological views in conflict with Supreme Court precedent – if they can be fair. She asked Mr. Buescher, who has a clear record of anti-choice activism, whether he could separate his personal beliefs from decisions he would make if confirmed for a lifetime appointment on the federal bench. Over the past two years, the Senator has been attacked by right wing ideologues for her examination of Donald Trump’s ideologically-driven nominees to the courts. It is unfortunate that Congresswoman Gabbard based her misguided opinion on the far-right wing manipulation of these straightforward questions.” – Will Dempster, spokesperson for Sen. Hirono

And Rep. Gabbard’s spokeswoman sent HNN the following statement:

“Our freedom of religion is enshrined in our Constitution and in our Bill of Rights, which so many brave Americans across generations have put their lives on the line to protect. No nominee for public service should be disqualified, either directly or indirectly because of their religion or religious affiliation. While Rep. Gabbard opposes this nomination, it has no basis in any religious litmus test. She will always fight for religious freedom and oppose religious bigotry — no matter where it comes from.” – Lauren McIlvaine, spokeswoman for Rep. Gabbard

An interesting take on the Wall:
Jeffrey S Malashock The President should have taken the deal all the way back to last year when no one was arguing illogical absurdities such as “the wall is immoral” and they offered offered 25 billion Dollars (same folks, Pelosi, Schumer, Hoyer) for a DACA deal. The President should have taken this deal, and not left the money on the table hoping to hold out to do away with chain migration at the same time. We could have had the wall funding in place and the whole issue resolved, and then had this fight or perhaps a different one over chain migration and the other needed fixes to our immigration system at another time.
DACA is temporarily off the table because a lower court has stayed the Presidents decision to not renew President Obamas Executive order. President Obama acknowledged that it was likely an illegal EO that he didn’t have the power to do, and was not likely to survive a court challenge. When a higher court overturns the stay, which is the likely and almost inevitable outcome, DACA will be back on the table and the Democrats will be back to negotiate, and the President wants DACA off the table before the 2020 election and will make that deal. Until then, this cynical and dishonest drama of partisan one upsmanship by the Senate and House Democrats will continue. This is NOT an arguement over policy or governance, regardless of how many people read that lie off of their coordinated talking points.

the only thing that "works" with an active drunk is to throw them a rope and tie it to a post. and walk away.

the same thing applies to a drunk who's containing their drunkeness with privacy.

both are cons. both are suffering from enormous burdens of self-loathing AND self-pity (a lethal combo).

and neither are demonstrating who they were born to be, or whom we knew as their former sober self.

but that is how people get snookered into tying that rope around there own waists: "Oh, but Gina is a good person." or "Niko isn't really an asshole when he isnt drinking." that's the con.

Gina and Niko are "gone" so long as the monkey mind is pickled.

Thanks everyone! Jane, have we told you about our neighbor who has a drinking problem? Sometimes we don't see her for days. I'm not sure of the details, but somehow, between the state of CT and the state of FL,red flags started flying. She had three DUIs in CT! She has a breathalyzer in the car and if she's been drinking, the car won't start. The parole officer shows up a few times a week. She still takes the car out,but usually has an Uber driver. Ha,everyone in the neighborhood knows her Uber driver, nice guy.

Salinas, whom the New York Times once described as the “voice of Hispanic America,” told CNN host Don Lemon after Trump’s Tuesday evening Oval Office address that she is saddened that Latinos “are buying some of these arguments against undocumented immigrants” that Trump has been making.

“And it’s very sad to see that our own people, who are immigrants themselves, are attacking these immigrants that are trying to come in, knowing themselves how difficult the situation is in a lot of these Latin American countries,” she continued. “And, you know, they’re buying it, and some people, just like some other Trump supporters, are saying, well, you know, so what if he tells lies, as long as we have lower unemployment among the Latino community.”
