Progressives agree and no one else matters - sky-high tax rates on "the rich" are what's best for all of us! But not so fast.
THE ETERNAL CAVEAT: Who are "the rich"? Paul Krugman is always going n about billionaires and private jets until tax reform is on the table and then he wants to raise taxes on everyone earning more than $250,000 (which is roughly where Bill Clinton's "millionaire's tax" kicked in).
However, in the current Ocasio-Cortez version of the progressive fantasy, we will see dream rates on those earning above $10 million per annum. This WaPo howler barely notes the problem that much of that high-end income is capital gains, not tedious W-2 wages and salary. Sure, let's raise the capital gains rate to 70% and see whether people volunteer to sell assets and incur the taxes. Bet they don't!
You can't be making "progress" unless you are raising taxes, don'tcha know?
Foist?

He was a great neighbor and a great guy. So I went over and got to know her. She had terrible stories of what her son was doing with no court approval and that bothered me. Turns out he did have court approval that she didn't know about. 9or can't remember)
In the last 5 days she has gotten drinker every day and remembers nothing. She has called the police 3 times today (remembers nothing) and the third time they took her away in handcuffs. And there is nothing I can do but regret getting involved, which makes me very sad,

I need some help fellow JOM'ers. I think I have an idea for a new TV show that would be a guaranteed hit.
I'm calling it "I've Got a Grievance". Every episode the celebrity panel would have a number of questions to try and guess what the mystery guest's grievance is.
I think this is a natural fit for the college and potsmoker sets. Put it on late in the afternoon up against Jerry or Maury or whoever.
"cops took my stash", "orange man bad", "transgender misidentification",
We could pitch it to the execs as a way to atone for their collective guilt.
We could get special guest stars like Alyssa Milano and Oprah and Danny Glover and other Hollywood types who can lecture the audience on how unfair everything is.
Prizes could include a week in Caracas or living with a Cuban family for a month, or a trip to Western China to see the Uigher re-education camps or even an evening at the Trump Tower Moscow in the presidential suite.
The studio audience could dress up in various wacky protest outfits like lobsters or crabs or or illegal aliens or antifas. Monty Hall could lead the bad slogan chanting between commercials. Instead of a green room they could have a safe space.
I'm tellin' ya, it could be a hit!

He pretty much knew the problems associated with transcribing oral history. What he does effectively is weave what H wrote into his experiences in differing countries. He had a brief vignette, only two or three paragraphs, while in Cairo during Nasser being in charge, of how third world tyrants make use of street people to be their eyes and ears. It's so condensed that I might transcribe it in the Sunday Book thread if my iPad doesn't reboot on me.

The Enquirer says it trailed Bezos across five states for four months in what it calls the 'largest investigation' in the magazine's history, with its photographer catching the lovebirds 'doing the dirty on their spouses together no fewer than six times in 14 days.'
The magazine claims that the affair has gone on for some eight months behind the back of both Bezos' wife and Sanchez's husband.
The bombshell story is a major coup for the Enquirer and its CEO David Pecker, a one-time ally to President Donald Trump, whose scorn for Bezos' Washington Post has been no secret.

experiencing drunks get hauled away and put in the system is traumatic. my sympathies.
the emotional toll that display takes on observers is significant. not many are aware enough about how to deal with the aftermath--- we live in a "move on, get over it culture."
picking out the splinters requires a deep-dive on ourselves: what did it remind me of; how do i project myself into the same sitch--- what would happen to me....
JOM is a tough crowd and these kinds of things tend to piss people here off. but, if people want to be useful in the aftermath-- say if the neighbor comes home, some of these suggestions can prove useful....including that rope i was talking about.
FYI.

The smaller one turned to the bigger one and said, "I can't understand how you can be so much bigger than me. We're the same age; we were the same size as kids. I just don't get it."
"Well," said the big gator, "what have you been eating?"
"Politicians, same as you," replied the small gator.
“Hmm.....Well, where do you catch them?"
Down the other side of the swamp near the parking lot by the Capitol."
"Same here. Hmm.... How do you catch them?"
"Well, I crawl up under one of their fancy cars and wait for one to unlock the car door. Then I jump out, grab them by the leg, shake the sh*t out of them and eat'em!"
"Same here." says the big gator. "Do you eat Democrats or Republicans?"
"I eat the Democrats" says the little guy.
"Ah!" says the big gator. "I think I see your problem. You're not getting any real nourishment. You see, by the time you finish shaking the shit out of a Democrat, there's nothing left but an asshole and a briefcase.”
