All the spin-offs and mergers. Dean Witter, Discover, Allstate, etc. For many years they were a retail giant in many fields. Then they lost focus on retailing. Probably the biggest mistake was acquiring K-Mart.

J. C. Penny's biggest mistake from Wiki: "In June 2011, J. C. Penney announced that Ron Johnson, who had led Apple retail stores in a period of high growth, became the company's new CEO."

That was the same year they sold their catalog business, so they were already in trouble, but Johnson was a disaster.

they usually put together schemes that just don't work ... iirc Lambert was hoping for a VW short squeeze and Ackman (when he owned JCP) was an "activist" letting everyone know they couldn't do their jobs (sort of like when my boss's boss calls up his lackey to tell him to let me know how to do my job ... at 22 hundred hours on a friday night well after all the bs meetings have concluded ... thanks, never thought of any of that-genius that is what that is ...)

sometimes they get government and ngo's involved, like what happened in the for-profit education sector ... typical corruption.

In CA a couple illegals have been chosen for commission slots that are appointed not elected.

Rich,

If I want to know something about real estate OL is my go to guy for a straight answer.

He also has a lot of other worthwhile views. He's a raging skeptic, I'm just a skeptic, but he's right, people maintain an interest in not having a fair justice system.

The little guy, or girl, would benefit from a more equal justice system where they can't be railroaded into a guilty plea just to get out of jail when they can't afford bail.

Advocate groups don't want a fair system where an un-monied individual could de-rail them in their attempts to force government actions.

The government surely doesn't want real justice because it would lose it's ability to coerce individuals and businesses into doing what theoretical lawyers have already decided the "best" possible outcome and won't be dissuaded by logical arguments.

And he's right again when "facts" are suppressed in the media and "theories" are elevated to truths.

We have poorly educated journalists and teachers teaching "untruths" as fact.

I was on an elementary debate team and you never knew which point you were going to argue beforehand. So you had to know both arguments cold. The good and the bad, what was weak, what was strong.

People don't do that anymore, they have never been exposed to logic as a way of living. It's emotionalism.

Taking a logic course in college was an eye opener. Economics too. The idea that there is a theory about how infinite wants and needs are constrained by finite resources. The uneducated have no idea that the means to resolve all problems do not exist, that one has to pick and choose choices that are supported only by the finite resources available.

It's scary how many people don't know these things and think that the government can solve everything. And it's scary how many of them don't realize that their proposed solutions may impinge on others constitutional rights. Rant off.

This is interesting as a tsunami was likely after the Gulf of Mexico strike. How high it night have been has always been speculative. The blast radius we think we know due to the fires that resulted. But a tsunami would have been a worldwide event. As would have been the atmospheric effects and localized earthquakes.

I was always thinking that the immensity of the impact would have sent a shock-wave through the interior of the Earth to the opposite side of the planet.

Was this it?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siberian_Traps

anonamom

When our local mall had a huge upfit/renovation/expansion over a decade and a half ago ago, making it the largest retail center between DC and ATL, it was clear then retail had changed--and was going to continue to. (This busy momma had already ordered nearly all my babies' and preschool children's clothes from catalogs over the landline, and we were using Amazon with increasing regularity.)

The brick and mortar stores built for the new top shelf retailers were rather small, didn't have a lot of inventory. The existing mid levels (GAP, AE) were moving, but not increasing their footprints by much. The existing department stores did NOT expand, and the new anchors that came in the expansion were smaller than the existing ones.

It appeared to me they were built to serve as display areas for the product, NOT as sources (inventories) of said product---and that is very much how they are used. Go in, check out quality, even sizing, but don't expect to necessarily go home with what you want then. They are happy to order it for you right then and there, or you can do it--from your phone, right?!! WOW!!--and it will be on your doorstep the following day or two.

Then if it doesn't work out, just bring it right back here, sweetie, and we'll take care of that annoying return at our register, if you want. (Back then, it took a trip to the post office. Now, where I live, they'll pick up.)

Good? Bad?
It is what it is.

I didn't know Sears even existed any more, until the recent troubles started being covered.
Ours--which was in that mall 34 years ago--has long been gone.

jim nj

Anonamom,

Interesting perspective. I don't know if Sears needed malls. All their prior locations were stand-alones. But malls definitely needed anchor stores.

Now it's amazing how many anchor stores are closing in malls.

Malls in Bergen County have had to go through multiple re-do renovations, but it's still the capital of retail.

henry

The mall here is now surrounded by restaurants with main access toward the parking lot, not inside. The Sears got torn down, a hotel is going up. I have no idea what’s inside these days.

jim nj

Henry,

The Fashion Center, the smallest of the malls in Paramus went the same way after an anchor store closed. They remodeled, brought in a supermarket and restaurants, and everything has an outdoor entrance now. No interior mall experience.

Quite a few malls are trying to recreate themselves as residential communities. They have enough land, including the parking lots, to build high-rise and convert the remaining stores to service the new population.

henry

Malls as pod bays for millennials? OK.

jim nj

Henry,

It's not a "solo" attempt to climb Denali if you expect to be rescued by the government if you screw up.

I admire people who have the gumption to climb mountains without rescue, but if you need rescue you should be billed for it.

Oh hell yeah to this. There was a story, I think in the NYT Sunday magazine before the entire shitshow went to hell (someone here may have linked it), about some bint with more testosterone than common sense went hiking by herself in the Presidential range of New Hampshire in the winter. I was thinking "this is on the east coast and they aren't real mountains like the Rockies; how bad can this be"; this article gave me a quick attitude adjustment (plus reminded me that Mount Washington [Presidential, D'OH] with its brutal conditions are part of this. Anyway her squeeze reported her missing and a huge snowstorm was raging. These volunteer climbing experts risked everything to form a rescue team in the middle of this; they had to split up and cell coverage was borderline nonexistent up there so they were all in great danger in howling conditions. They eventually found her body and figured out that a gust of wind had lifted her and smashed her into a rock face and then dropped her. I'm not sure what having someone else with her could've done, other than injecting some common sense before things got too dangerous or having two people killed, but those guys in the rescue team were heroes.

Anyway glad to see rich agrees with me on a couple things that didn't receive widespread report here; he's one of my last touchstones of sanity here when I've run afoul of the hive mind.
