All of it was terrific, Miss M. The quick run thru of the Battle of Okinawa was as well, and then the consequences of the Greek Battle involving Socrates and Alcibiades. I love how VDH explained how thru the vicissitudes of war "mediocrities" can emerge as figures of consequence while consequential figures can be justly and unjustly destroyed, and tying that into Alcibiades Military "cache" from that contest for the next few decades being the cause of such damage to Athens.
And I loved how he explained how Nathan Bedford Forest rose immediately thru the ranks as a consequence of his actions at Shiloh, since alone amongst the surviving Confederate leaders he was the only one that came out without a finger having been pointed at him for screw ups that cost them the Battle, and then VDH's discussion of the postwar repercussions of the South's glomming on to the excuse of "an opportunity lost due to happen-stance" make brilliant sense as he laid that out.

Masked thugs, civilians killed by live rounds, and the burning of trucks carrying badly-needed food and medicine. This has been Maduro’s response to peaceful efforts to help Venezuelans. Countries that still recognize Maduro should take note of what they are endorsing.
One of the reasons I found that Hanson tape fascinating is that I know next to nothing about military history. My history of war is basically my high school stuff, which is like "This battle happened and XXX won."
It's only in the last 20 years or so I have really started to think about it, but when you don't have much of a background, your thinking isn't very sophisticated,
The Trump administration is threatening to deport the family members of Venezuelan military officials — including some who live in the Miami area — who don’t disobey the Maduro government and allow aid from the United States to enter Venezuela.
A senior administration official told a small group of reporters Friday that the administration has collected data on military leaders who have family that have left Venezuela. They are living in Miami, the Caribbean and across the hemisphere. According to the administration, they’re living lives of luxury while their countrymen suffer.
Excellent comments, Miss M. I had 2 American Military History courses in college and both were wonderful. Thank God I took 'em back before modern society determined we were the bad guys in that conflict.
I'm relinking that VDH link just so if anyone needs something on in the background when they mute CNN and quit hollering at the TV screen they might give it a listen: VDH on "Ripples of Battle."
BTW, I specifically recall buying my copy of that book on a bargain table on the bottom level of the Strand Bookstore in Manhattan.

Yes Catsmeat, but a number of our boys wound up marrying them nonetheless, some amazingly with good success but sadly some with predictable stereotypical consequences. I recall relating here a long while back how when one of my good old buddies, "Fag One," pulled into Port onboard whatever carrier was visiting Subic, he wound up ordering one of his nugget troops into not being allowed to leave the boat after a previous nights Liberty session where he met Ms Right and demanded permission to marry her ASAP.
That Troop hated Joe's guts, but a few months later, whenever the boat pulled into homeport stateside, that troop's parents requested to meet 'Fag' and they gave him the biggest hug and handshake of sincere thanks in human history:)
Reminds a bit I suppose tho' of Lt Cable in South Pacific, because as I recall Michener had a very low opinion of Asian women until he was smitten and fell in love with the one he wound up with I believe the rest of his life.
On the Literary front, VDH in the Lew Wallace segment @29-39 minutes, winds up discussing literature and how the intellectuals in Boston of the day despised him. This from the 37:45 mark, on Ben Hur
VDH:...this is in 1885 where he's really the best selling author in the history of American letters. By the way, Oliver Wendell Holmes or James Lowell, and Cambridge, they don't do want anything to do with this guy---stilted prose, thinly veiled Christian Allegory--- it's not "highbrow Literature", but to American people, it was really for most people the first time they ever thought it was an acceptable thing to read fiction that was not religious, and it was religious message involved, so it really created the idea of an American Frontier family or an American average family reading literature, sort of the popular pulp magazine or pulp best seller...
Since 1885 is the year Mark Twain published Huck Finn in America, (likewise not to huge praise in Cambridge) if you give the Lew Wallace segment a listen I'd love your take. Right, wrong, simplistic, etc, bit please no pressure whatever to do so if you're busy cooking poisonous dead deer carcass.

Around here, the common conception was that Wallace had had some sort of religious conversion and was thus inspired to write "Ben Hur - A Tale of the Christ."
Much of this was no doubt fueled by the movie coming out, which debuted downtown and it was wide screen with big-time music. My entire school's 5th and 6th grade went, and now that I think about it, I think it was all of the 5th and 6th grades for the entire township. That would have been 7 grade schools. Probably around 500 or so kids. We all got the fancy booklet-style programs, too. (Wish I still had mine, darn it. I think it got thrown away when my mom cleaned stuff out after I got married.)

The heartbreaking violence in Venezuela must stop. I stand with President @JGuaido, the National Assembly, and the people of #Venezuela as they embrace their right to live in peace, choose their leaders, and decide their future, in harmony with their neighbors.
--The Venezuelan military and security forces must demonstrate restraint.--
Why must they? Venezuela was disarmed by first Chavez and then Maduro who then armed his stooges.
The Venezuela military and security forces may do anything they please; just as Kameltoe and her fellow totalitarians would like things here.
We're not giving ours up, bitch.
Tommy boy Maduro who sometimes looks like ons of the killer bees is a bus driver, who attended leadership courses in whatever politburo academy they offer, here's a twist that tk would appreciate hes not even born in Venezuela but Colombia. Now the Cubans would prefer Cabello who runs the army and hence the sun cartel, and is one of chavezs last original band of rebels but ironically the Castro regime meaning Raul doesn't get along with him.
Chuck Schumer and a few of his staff members were visiting an elementary school and the class was studying vocabulary. The teacher was in the middle of a discussion related to words, their meanings, and proper usage.
The teacher asked Senator Schumer if he would like to lead the discussion on the word "Tragedy.”
So Mr. Schumer asked the class for an example of a "Tragedy.”
A little boy stood up and offered: "If my best friend, who lives on a farm, is playing in the field and a tractor runs over him and kills him, that would be a tragedy."
"Incorrect," said Schumer. "That would be an accident."
A little girl raised her hand: "If a school bus carrying fifty children drove over a cliff, killing everybody inside, that would be a tragedy."
"I'm afraid not", explained Schumer, "That's what we would refer to as a great loss."
The room went silent - no other children volunteered.
Schumer searched the room, "Isn't there someone here who can give me an example of a tragedy?"
Finally, at the back of the room, Little Johnny raised his hand and said: "If an airplane carrying you, Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters, Dick Durban, Adam Schiff, Richard Blumenthal, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton was struck by a missile and blown to smithereens, that would be a tragedy."
"Fantastic," exclaimed Schumer, "And can you tell me why that would be a tragedy?"
"Well," said Little Johnny, "It has to be a tragedy... because it certainly wouldn't be a great loss and it probably wouldn't be a fucking accident either!"
Little Johnny and his parents are now included in Robert Mueller's investigation. And both of Schumer's staff members who laughed out loud are now looking for other employment.
If someone is backing up rather indiscriminately in a place where they are actually supposed to be driving forward they don't automatically assume the right of way do they?
What screws that question up is I was driving thru a Holiday Inn Express parking lot and I needed to make a little jog left to get on the main road.
I don't know what this idiot was doing but he should have seen the lights from my big green truck filling his cabin. I hit my horn as I jogged left lest he hit my rear fender and he yelled indignantly in my general direction.
Korean-Americans do pool money privately. Huge loss of "face" if you don't pay it back as scheduled.
They like to invest in things they understand so they can look at a business plan and know if will work. Some of the investors will act as advisors with their Rolodex of contacts, suppliers, etc. Your accountant will be a Korean and will be expected to be loyal to the owner and the investors.
The Fed did a study of how many times a community will spend money before it leaves that money. Blacks are at the bottom of the list, Korean-Americans are on the top of the list. Blacks score just slightly above 1, Koreans score a little above 6. Meaning that a dollar that enters the Korean community gets spent 6 times within the community before it flows back out.
I learned tonight that an American gal I've known since she was little (now a singer) is a rock star in So Korea with 2 bodyguards to protect her everywhere she goes. Isn't life amazing?
They are the dignity battalions of Noriega, turns out they are probably the anti gang faes, but Venezuela having absorbed nasserism is fractured like Iraq, there is Chavezs bros Adan who has his own militia. As well as the army and the national guard
"As 60 enemy fighters closed in on a US Air Force 4th Generation fighter aircraft, blinding the jet with electronic warfare attacks, an experienced pilot faced unseen life threatening attackers closing in -- during an air-combat Red Flag exercise closely replicating actual warfare scenarios.
Yet, in a life-saving flash, the endangered 4-th pilot was told to “turn around” by an F-35 operating in the vicinity who radioed an instant warning. The 5th-Gen, multi-role stealth fighter then used its long-range sensors and weapons to “kill” the enemy aircraft, according to an Air Force news report."
I'm looking at realcleardefense where they have these extraordinary articles.
No more lawyers calling off an attack of opportunity because all your bombs are too big and they're worried abut collateral damage.
An F-35 fighter directed a 4th generation fighter by radio to scram. An F-35 with the capabilities of an AWACS to coordinate air-battles? Science fiction come alive.
If the F-22 and F-35 live up to the hype they are now receiving they can lead 4th generation fighters on bombing missions. One or two stealth fighters to clear the skies and 4th generation fighters acting like a fleet of bomb trucks right behind them.
Networked air-battles are the stuff Dale Brown used to write about.
Feel free to correct me, but what I remember of Sherman's march was that he mostly declined set piece battle in favor of outflanking maneuvers.
Jim,
I don't disagree, and that does not disagree with what VDH says as a lesson learned by Sherman at Shiloh. Start at minute 20:00 thru minute 23:00 for VDH's opinion of the different lessons that Grant and Sherman took away from Shiloh.
I would like to believe that Donald John Trump is America's "Mink Man" who will deal justice to the rats who infest DC. DJT has flushed the rats. The rats are now walking around in plain view squeaking their tales to their rat friendly media.
I've been listening to a lot of Catholic theology and philosophy and I may be backsliding a bit from Libertarianism. If you go with John Adams that our Constitution is unsuitable for people who aren't moral and self governing, then how much more ungovernable will our country be if we get rid of the Vice Squad?
Clarice succinctly connects the dots in the week's events to show the forest. Clarice also demonstrates why it is futile to talk with Liberals because they wouldn't know about any of the events and what they would know is wrong. The Liberal media propaganda machine has created a Tower of Babel news fog that totally obfuscates the underlying events.
Tonight is Oscars night, with an expected lower than ever viewing audience. Smollett says he’s checking into rehab and now blames drug addiction for the hoax. So many Hollywood miscreants are in rehab these days; I expect that’s where the best Oscar parties will take place.
Rehab?
I swear it's like an episode of the old Comedy series, "The Larry Sanders Show," where because ratings were plummeting or something Roseanne Barr advises Larry to pretend to have a drug problem and enter the Betty Ford Clinic for Rehab, which as I recall he does and he gets rehired for another Season and the ratings go thru the roof due to sympathy for Larry.
And so tonight we have to suffer thru another round of the insufferable Oscars? We're gonna' need a second Mink Man just to clean out the Rathole of Hollywood. They're all just as big phonies as Smollett.
Clarice, 2 links didn't work for me. The one next to the orange pic of Clarice's Pieces, reading "Here’s a list of 342 of them," and way down at the bottom the one reading "Booker and Harris vouched for his credibility and promoted the hoax," doesn't work. Very nice work.
And speaking of Rehab, how long do you guys think former Dem Congressman and Chuck Schumer protege', Anthony Weiner, can have access to a Laptop and not violate the terms of his release?
The snow has departed, leaving about 2", which is no prob. OTOH the wind is NW at 17-29 kts. It'll be sporting to shovel when the sun comes up. OTOOH, the temp is 21F; at least it's not -21F.
I wonder if when I get to Hell I'll be in the section where you half to watch CNN like you're in at Chicago O'Hare Terminal, or instead if I'll be in some Dentist's Office where the Oscar's are on and you can't change the channel?

this series on a dropping an LS3 Chevy V-8 into a Miata is pretty remarkable.
Immaculate work, immaculate work area and a very tidy end product.

LITTLE JOHNNY DOES IT AGAIN

Kamala Harris and Bill Clinton statements on Venezuela indicate they've decided that reflexively opposing each Trump policy is a losing strategy.
Didn't Scott Adams have a gradient, perhaps 6 months ago, along which Dems would move from "literally Hitler" to something more nuanced?

If someone is backing up rather indiscriminately in a place where they are actually supposed to be driving forward they don't automatically assume the right of way do they?
What screws that question up is I was driving thru a Holiday Inn Express parking lot and I needed to make a little jog left to get on the main road.
I don't know what this idiot was doing but he should have seen the lights from my big green truck filling his cabin. I hit my horn as I jogged left lest he hit my rear fender and he yelled indignantly in my general direction.

Clarice,
Korean-Americans do pool money privately.
Meaning that a dollar that enters the Korean community gets spent 6 times within the community before it flows back out.

https://defensemaven.io/warriormaven/air/single-f-35-kills-dozens-of-enemy-fighters-in-airwar-live-combat-scenario-8yGDmuWio06zZUDnjdGPmg/
Posted by: jim nj | February 24, 2019 at 01:40 AM
PIN,
I'm looking at realcleardefense where they have these extraordinary articles.

Good read, Clarice.
