Normally David French does a terrific job at the National Review (I'm a HUGE fan of his Gun Violence Restraining Order piece) but... he is off the rails with his follow-up to this tweet:
By the way, the porn affairs and hush money payments by themselves are enough for me to never, ever vote for Trump. And that’s just one thing, of many. I remember the days, like way back in, say, May 2015, when that would have been a consensus Evangelical position.
That provoked this somewhat off-message response:
The difference is, unlike you, the evangelicals started thinking politically rather than moralistically. Moralism has its place, of course, but prudence must inform it and direct it. Aristotle (or even Aquinas!) should be our guide. You seem to prefer Kant.
Why is this off-message? Because it creates a false dichotomy between "thinking politically rather than moralistically".
Dealing with a lesser of two evils situation is a moral question that, believe it or not, precedes Trump. Here for example, is a Christian minister citing Aquinas and "the moral principle of double effect":
Saint Thomas Aquinas, in his Summa Theologiae, established the moral principle of double effect. (II-II.64.7) Four conditions must be met for someone to act righteously despite bad consequences. First, the act itself must be good or at least amoral. One could argue that voting is a good deed or at least morally indifferent. Secondly, the good effect cannot be achieved by means of the bad effect. The Machiavellian policy that the end justifies the means is wrong; nothing justifies sinful methods. Thirdly, one must intend only the good effect. The other is an involuntary repercussion.
To illustrate, physicians routinely prescribe medicines to patients notwithstanding unfortunate side-effects. Finally, the good effect must be proportionately greater than the evil effect. For instance, driving through a red light when there is no traffic in the middle of the night is better than waiting for it to turn green when rushing someone urgently to a hospital.
There was Terry Drew, who sat in the seventh pew on the left side, who knew and agreed with Trump’s position, and knew that supporting him involved a blatant moral compromise.
“I hate it,” he said. “My wife and I talk about it all the time. We rationalize the immoral things away. We don’t like it, but we look at the alternative, and think it could be worse than this.”
The only way to understand how a Christian like him could support a man who boasted about grabbing women’s crotches, Terry said, was to understand how he felt about the person Trump was still constantly bringing up in his speeches and who loomed large in Terry’s thoughts: Hillary Clinton, whom Terry saw as “sinister” and “evil” and “I’d say, of Satan.”
“She hates me,” Terry said, sitting in Crum’s office one day. “She has contempt for people like me, and Clay, and people who love God and believe in the Second Amendment. I think if she had her way it would be a dangerous country for the likes of me.”
Not a Hillary fan. The minister also wrestled with his support for Trump but settled on the notion that God sometimes uses flawed messengers:
The dilemma was that Trump was an immoral person doing what Crum considered to be moral things. The conservative judges. The antiabortion policies. And something else even more important to a small Southern Baptist congregation worried about their own annihilation.
“It encouraged them that we do still have some political power in this country,” said Crum.
When he prayed about it, that was what the voice of God had told him. The voice reminded Crum that God always had a hand in elections. The voice told him that God used all kinds of people to do his will.
“Nebuchadnezzar,” Crum said, citing the pagan king of Babylon who was advised by godly men to tear down an old corrupt order. “Even sometimes bad leaders are used by God.”
No spoiler on how the minister talked about Trump during the sermon.
Numero uno.

What's interesting to me is that, as far as I can tell, Trump has behaved in an exemplary manner since he has been in the White House.
Of course, his tweets are occasionally a little bit earthy, but we haven't seen him cavorting with interns or pushing for abortion or suggesting we decriminalize sex workers or attempting to restrict the rights of Christians, have we?
Another thing that people like French never consider is that maybe President Trump had a personal conversion. The black pastors and Franklin Graham seem to think President Trump is fine, and there are numerous pictures of Christians praying with him while they lay hands on him.
"By their fruits ye shall know them." I suggest Mr. Holier Than Thou French do a little bit more reading of his Bible.

--As Much As I Respect David French...--
You're supposed to save the punch line for the end.
--God sending flawed men to advance His designs is described here.--
At some point in the future a Flawless Man will return to complete His designs. Until then God pretty much has one pool to select from;
For ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. There is NONE who is righteous, no not one.
Not even that holier-than-thou, pecksniffian, towering douchebag David Fucking French.
And it's described rather better here in 1 Corinthians;
"Brothers, consider the time of your calling: Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were powerful; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly and despised things of the world, and the things that are not, to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast in His presence."
David French and his hypocritical moralizing have much more in common with Donald Trump than he knows and considerably more in common with the Pharisee on the street corner who stood by himself and prayed, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like the other men; swindlers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and pay tithes of all that I receive’ than he lets on.

If we couldn't vote for sinners then we couldn't vote for anyone.
We are ALL sinners. That is what Christianity is ALL about for heaven's sake.
I get to heaven by what Jesus Christ did FOR me.
If we Christians were perfect, we wouldn't need a Savior. Our belief stands on the perfection & truth of Jesus - not ourselves.

None of these 3 chemicals (dioxin, TCE and formaldehyde) is actually “known” to cause cancer in humans, because there is no epidemiological evidence of a cause-and-effect relationship. Nevertheless, ever since EPA redefined the word “known” to mean whatever the Agency wants it to mean, evidence of a cause-and-effect relationship has become unnecessary.

I love this very Captainesque comment from Iggy.
Pin,
Not much difference between public/private coppers. All cops, public and private, in IN are certified through the Law Enforcement Training Board. The main difference I know of is that private cops, university, hospital, etc., are limited in their enforcement abilities geographically by policy. A hospital cop’s authority stops at the property line. That policy restriction is similar to enforcing local ordinance. I can’t go to South Bend and enforce my town’s parking ordinance. On the other hand, I am limited by the borders of Indiana. I can technically enforce statute in Evansville, which is almost 300 miles away. As an example, if I’m on my way to see Miss Marple at Shapiro’s I can issue a ticket to the asshat hanging out in the passing lane on I-65 south of Lebanon. I just have to get the utt to the proper court.

David French? We're looking at him as some arbiter of morality and ethics? National Review Self-Destructs Over Covington Catholic
...Then there is David French, senior writer at National Review. Here is a religious man who spent “days of prayer, reflection, and serious study of the possibilities” of himself as President of the United States. If there was anyone at National Review who was going to step up and protect the innocent boys who had just attended the March for Life, it should have been French.
But he didn’t. When the story was breaking, and someone had to slow the mob down, French was nowhere to be seen.
The initial pushback against the anti-Covington boys lies came from independent minded thinkers on Twitter, people who French may look down upon. It was people like Mike Cernovich, Jack Posobiec, Will Chamberlain, and American Greatness senior contributor Julie Kelly, among others. They doubted the initial narrative, investigated, and helped spread awareness to protect the kids.
After it became clear and easy for pundits to follow along, French tweeted that, “Malicious people act on partial information… It’s disgusting. It’s evil.”
French should clarify. Does he feel Lowry is disgusting? Is Frankovich evil? Will he disavow Goldberg?
French thought about leading America, but it turns out, he can’t even lead a publication away from destruction.
If I need morality, ethics, or wisdom from National Review I'll get it from Dennis Prager and VDH. The rest of the weasels are as close to embodying morality as Michael Cohen is to embodying truth.

Henry:
The election for governor was so close.
Sure there wasn’t any fraud involved?
I cringe every time a Dem Governor prevails.I know what is next on the agenda.

maryrose, fraud? we'll never find out.

So when Acosta is booted from Labor, will he be replaced by Walker? Walker's pretty good with unions.

Momto2, all I can say is that my mom too had a case of Shingles five years ago, and her doc had her get Shingrix.
I would never practice medicine online!

TK---thank you for your explanation of your thoughts! When can I bring my car out??? ;-)
I had (of course) tried to diagnose it online, and it sounded to me quite likely to be what you are proposing/diagnosing.
Now, to find that " trusted mechanic."

TK--sorry you are sick. Hope that Tamiflu helps.
And yes, liquids.
If somebody can pick up some ginger and tumeric roots for you, make a tea out of them and two cloves of garlic--like 4C water to coins made from an inch of each root. Let all that steep for fifteen minutes. Add some lemon juice--4T or the amount in one lemon, and then add either some orange juice or maple syrup to make it palatable.
Good immune booster.

I should care one bit what David French says why, exactly?

I've heard the buzz about Bill Kristol getting his so called conservative rankings propped up by corporations. James Allsup is saying the same thing about National Review. And maybe this former National Review editor doing his Prager U video.
Google gave money to the National Review 'Foundation' and the immigrant editor shills for more immigration.
I already posted the Bill Kristol 'Replace Lazy Americans' tweet.

Folks, it's official: #nevertrumpism is over. The Weekly Standard closed. @NRO got rid of Jonah Goldberg....
Clicking on NRO I see that shit-hook's latest column is posted at Nat review as of 19 hours ago. I haven't started catch-up, but from a quick google query it looks to me like Jonah G is still on board that sinking ship. Maybe I'll learn something different during catch-up.

Momto2 - My hubby has gotten shingles twice so I'd advise you to get whatever vacinnation your doctor recommends. I never have gotten chicken pox so I've always refused to get the vacinnation. I've heard of too many people who got the shingles shot and then got shingles!

All you Nationals fans, Bryce Harper goes to your competitor the Phillies.
Mrs. JiB on her way to Southampton to pack up stuff.
Trump walks like he tells us he will do to save a deal in "Art of the Deal". Obama never learned to even crawl.

Hmm. Ok, I guess that's not medicine. :)
Good thing TK practices automobile diagnosis online.

We know who the company is, it's a swiss subsidiary of zamels psy group, now Mueller should have to present reasons for the sanction he has demanded.

A guy has to be a pretty hefty crapweasel to get me to employ the F word.
It's dubious crapweasels wear shoes of course, but just in case they do, if the crapweasel shoe fits...

Jack "Mrs. JiB on her way to Southampton to pack up stuff."
I saw your post the other night about escaping NY for low tax FL. And selling the family house to boot.
Boy is Mrs. OL jealous.

James D - I am not worried one bit about impeachment proceedings against Trump! Trump supporters will rise up against the evil Dems and make them sorry they even mentioned impeachment word. I know that my friends and I would be out on the streets protesting and raising hell all the way to DC. I'm pretty sure the Dems know it too. All talk and no hat (or cattle)!

Van Jones is very far left, BUT, he has consistently shown himself to be several steps above a great many progs who do not seem to be nearly so far left.
I don't know if he'll ever swallow the red pill but he definitely is more open to at least listening to rationality and actually having a conversation than most progs, which I recognize is very faint praise indeed, but still...

Hasn't that house been in your family a long time, JiB?

It's a good thing I don't have the power to ticket left lane lurkers.
Also I'd imagine sovereign immunity would be different if you were acting outside your jurisdiction.
