Normally David French does a terrific job at the National Review (I'm a HUGE fan of his Gun Violence Restraining Order piece) but... he is off the rails with his follow-up to this tweet:
By the way, the porn affairs and hush money payments by themselves are enough for me to never, ever vote for Trump. And that’s just one thing, of many. I remember the days, like way back in, say, May 2015, when that would have been a consensus Evangelical position.
That provoked this somewhat off-message response:
The difference is, unlike you, the evangelicals started thinking politically rather than moralistically. Moralism has its place, of course, but prudence must inform it and direct it. Aristotle (or even Aquinas!) should be our guide. You seem to prefer Kant.
Why is this off-message? Because it creates a false dichotomy between "thinking politically rather than moralistically".
Dealing with a lesser of two evils situation is a moral question that, believe it or not, precedes Trump. Here for example, is a Christian minister citing Aquinas and "the moral principle of double effect":
Saint Thomas Aquinas, in his Summa Theologiae, established the moral principle of double effect. (II-II.64.7) Four conditions must be met for someone to act righteously despite bad consequences. First, the act itself must be good or at least amoral. One could argue that voting is a good deed or at least morally indifferent. Secondly, the good effect cannot be achieved by means of the bad effect. The Machiavellian policy that the end justifies the means is wrong; nothing justifies sinful methods. Thirdly, one must intend only the good effect. The other is an involuntary repercussion.
To illustrate, physicians routinely prescribe medicines to patients notwithstanding unfortunate side-effects. Finally, the good effect must be proportionately greater than the evil effect. For instance, driving through a red light when there is no traffic in the middle of the night is better than waiting for it to turn green when rushing someone urgently to a hospital.
There was Terry Drew, who sat in the seventh pew on the left side, who knew and agreed with Trump’s position, and knew that supporting him involved a blatant moral compromise.
“I hate it,” he said. “My wife and I talk about it all the time. We rationalize the immoral things away. We don’t like it, but we look at the alternative, and think it could be worse than this.”
The only way to understand how a Christian like him could support a man who boasted about grabbing women’s crotches, Terry said, was to understand how he felt about the person Trump was still constantly bringing up in his speeches and who loomed large in Terry’s thoughts: Hillary Clinton, whom Terry saw as “sinister” and “evil” and “I’d say, of Satan.”
“She hates me,” Terry said, sitting in Crum’s office one day. “She has contempt for people like me, and Clay, and people who love God and believe in the Second Amendment. I think if she had her way it would be a dangerous country for the likes of me.”
Not a Hillary fan. The minister also wrestled with his support for Trump but settled on the notion that God sometimes uses flawed messengers:
The dilemma was that Trump was an immoral person doing what Crum considered to be moral things. The conservative judges. The antiabortion policies. And something else even more important to a small Southern Baptist congregation worried about their own annihilation.
“It encouraged them that we do still have some political power in this country,” said Crum.
When he prayed about it, that was what the voice of God had told him. The voice reminded Crum that God always had a hand in elections. The voice told him that God used all kinds of people to do his will.
“Nebuchadnezzar,” Crum said, citing the pagan king of Babylon who was advised by godly men to tear down an old corrupt order. “Even sometimes bad leaders are used by God.”
No spoiler on how the minister talked about Trump during the sermon.

Can someone define 'emerging economy' for me seeing as how Turkey has been around thousands of years and all that:
https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2019-02-28/orban-s-risky-plans-to-restrict-hungary-s-debt-to-nationals
Even when they start out with reasonable economic policies, nationalists tend to take their pursuit of sovereignty too far. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s handling of Hungary’s public debt is a case in point...
Lowering foreign currency-denominated debt is generally smart policy since it reduces a country’s exposure to exchange rate risks. Turkey’s recent economic troubles have revealed the danger of having a lot of dollar-denominated debt when the dollar is appreciating (and the lira plunging). And Turkey isn’t the only emerging economy that has become more dependent on foreign currency funding in the last decade: Malaysia, South Africa and Thailand have opened themselves up to the same kind of turbulence, as the European Central Bank showed in a December report focusing on emerging markets’ economic vulnerabilities.

Do they require NHS docs to put the dude in the stirrups and have the poor saw bones take a gander up the guy's transmission tunnel to see if he can spot a cervix that has spontaneously sprouted due to the demented dude's fervent wishing upon a star he had one?

those NJ, NY, CT, MA, IL, leavers are bringing their politics here.
We've had this problem locally since Marylanders came down to run a new Fairchild aircraft plant during WWII, and it just got worse after textiles collapsed and the Research Triangle got going. At least the Mexicans aren't voting yet.
NC would be nicely red but for all the Yankee leavers who came after the native whites began switching parties in the early 70's.

My thanks to whomever posted the link to Tucker's open yesterday, as he confirmed my take away form the four hours or so of testimony I caught on Wednesday in bits in pieces.
I told my husband yesterday that I thought Cohen been brought on to soften the blow to the Lefties from the Mueller report--that that was my take away.To my hear, Cohen completely discredited any collusion, usually in response to Ds very specific questions. It so undermined the "Russia, Russia, Russia" story that I thought it had to be intentional on their part.
You know , that "Never ask a question you don't already know the answer to.
Plus, he testified that he met with Schiff and Cummings to prep!
Yes, he said that.
No, NYT did not headline it...
And as Tucker notes, that "conversion" experience was not only incredible---as NOT Credible---but not in Cohen's "voice" either. Kind like Obama's book that Ayers supposedly wrote, which doesn't sound Obama in the least. .Catsmeat or CH can better explain that voice. Seemed like very slack effort to me. But why good playwrites and screen writers are good --they capture the different characters voice.
That did NOT happen yesterday
But I am grateful for this confirmation, because you'd never know the above from what I caught of the standard source news yesterday.

Just wanted to respond to mm's link about 6 last night on cruz offering up federal tax credits involving voluntary contributions to a scholarship funds. Georgia has something similar with a cap, and private school teachers tell me its passage was the end of their autonomy in teaching, especially with a traditional emphasis. Even one of those students accepted binds the entire school to oversight in a different way.
I would be very surprised if ted does not know that. Right now there are still some ports in the storm, but the template is that all types of school will be on similar, student-centered aims, beyond the superficial level that gets pitched to parents as 'choice'.
It's not just that I believe it is coordinated. It's that I watch the heritage or homeschool defense fund employees attending unesco or oecd conferences that I shouldn't be aware of.
Anyone else ever had their cats do an eowyn and the hobbit vs the big elephant seen as they were simply going down the stairs? Cats assumed I was going down to feed them last night and darted to the side of one leg and then in front of me. Good thing I was holding the railing.
Special moment. My next door neighbor in Fla kept a morgan in her garage purchased on a family trip to england where I guess they toured the factory. My girls loved that car. It seemed like a toy to them and their size when they were young.

That kind of federal tax provision, like the state programs it is tied to will pull those schools into these SDG outcomes, but parents won't see that if they even notice the changes. I was just reading the underlying brief and the necessary competencies and character traits students must come to exhibit.

"an average American uses 3 rolls of toilet paper a week and it's devastating forests."
I am calling total BS on this.
I have always been very prolific in the "cable laying" activity and I don't go through 3 rolls a week.
Maybe 2:)

So are we switching to the three shells.
In the already tried and true way of selecting your audience Larson uses intersectional feminism in an interview.

"We have coyotes around here even into well-populated areas"
Back in our former house, not only did we have coyotes, the HOA vocally refused to do anything because coyotes are natural.
Instead, don't leave pet food out, don't leave pets, kids or elders out alone in the evening was their advice.

That sounds less like whining and more like a threat.

So are grimsley bears

Not a surprise. but still useful, especially since the EU has FB working with media to help define what is Fake News and disinformation. Talk about the fox and the hen house.

3 rolls per week? No way. I use Northern thousand sheet roll and it lasts all week.

LOL: @GovEvers declares a carbon free WI by 2050 in his so-called budget! It's not even technologically POSSIBLE. @SenFitzgerald said it best: It's a 1000 page press release, not a budget.

Hey Jim, I found your Dissenter comment. (I used a bad URL when I tried it the first time.)

I'm guessing WI houses have a bit more space between them, LOL

It DOES sound like fun, though!

Using the Dissenter extension, it looks like you have to click it on the main page of a thread, not one of the comment pages. (Needs the .html at the end.)

Jim, You can de-sprawl into pod bays with the rest of the left. Here in the dairy state we let cows have room to fart.

reasons not to buy a new car:
If you drive a Subaru, you may want to avoid wearing perfume or a sweater treated with fabric softener—they could prevent the engine from starting.

I live less than 20 miles from the center of Columbus. It is far suburbia. I can walk across the main east-west road that is the entrance to our development and be on a farm where hunting is legal.
Henry is even more remote. I think he has ~ 50 acres.
God's country for us "regular guys":)

Re the photo Pin posted (from CPAC?) @ 1:29 - “It’s time for conservatives to support paid family leave.”
No, it is absolutely, positively fucking NOT. It is one for college servatives to vocally, aggressively, unapologetically support radically lower taxes, smaller government and reduced regulations, and to oppose government policies and social pressures that dramatically increase the costs of raising children, while reducing the rights of parents to raise children according to their values and conscience.
Doing that would make it far easier for families to raise children on one salary, so the other parent can stay home wit the children, which of course eliminates the need for paid parental leave.
Why is this complicated?

Ext, now I see yours, too.
Next we get TM to ditch TypePad and just everyone posts comments directly to dissenter instead! TK would be saddened though, since he has honed his comment search skills over the years.
(TK, hope your flu is abating!)
