Normally David French does a terrific job at the National Review (I'm a HUGE fan of his Gun Violence Restraining Order piece) but... he is off the rails with his follow-up to this tweet:
By the way, the porn affairs and hush money payments by themselves are enough for me to never, ever vote for Trump. And that’s just one thing, of many. I remember the days, like way back in, say, May 2015, when that would have been a consensus Evangelical position.
That provoked this somewhat off-message response:
The difference is, unlike you, the evangelicals started thinking politically rather than moralistically. Moralism has its place, of course, but prudence must inform it and direct it. Aristotle (or even Aquinas!) should be our guide. You seem to prefer Kant.
Why is this off-message? Because it creates a false dichotomy between "thinking politically rather than moralistically".
Dealing with a lesser of two evils situation is a moral question that, believe it or not, precedes Trump. Here for example, is a Christian minister citing Aquinas and "the moral principle of double effect":
Saint Thomas Aquinas, in his Summa Theologiae, established the moral principle of double effect. (II-II.64.7) Four conditions must be met for someone to act righteously despite bad consequences. First, the act itself must be good or at least amoral. One could argue that voting is a good deed or at least morally indifferent. Secondly, the good effect cannot be achieved by means of the bad effect. The Machiavellian policy that the end justifies the means is wrong; nothing justifies sinful methods. Thirdly, one must intend only the good effect. The other is an involuntary repercussion.
To illustrate, physicians routinely prescribe medicines to patients notwithstanding unfortunate side-effects. Finally, the good effect must be proportionately greater than the evil effect. For instance, driving through a red light when there is no traffic in the middle of the night is better than waiting for it to turn green when rushing someone urgently to a hospital.
There was Terry Drew, who sat in the seventh pew on the left side, who knew and agreed with Trump’s position, and knew that supporting him involved a blatant moral compromise.
“I hate it,” he said. “My wife and I talk about it all the time. We rationalize the immoral things away. We don’t like it, but we look at the alternative, and think it could be worse than this.”
The only way to understand how a Christian like him could support a man who boasted about grabbing women’s crotches, Terry said, was to understand how he felt about the person Trump was still constantly bringing up in his speeches and who loomed large in Terry’s thoughts: Hillary Clinton, whom Terry saw as “sinister” and “evil” and “I’d say, of Satan.”
“She hates me,” Terry said, sitting in Crum’s office one day. “She has contempt for people like me, and Clay, and people who love God and believe in the Second Amendment. I think if she had her way it would be a dangerous country for the likes of me.”
Not a Hillary fan. The minister also wrestled with his support for Trump but settled on the notion that God sometimes uses flawed messengers:
The dilemma was that Trump was an immoral person doing what Crum considered to be moral things. The conservative judges. The antiabortion policies. And something else even more important to a small Southern Baptist congregation worried about their own annihilation.
“It encouraged them that we do still have some political power in this country,” said Crum.
When he prayed about it, that was what the voice of God had told him. The voice reminded Crum that God always had a hand in elections. The voice told him that God used all kinds of people to do his will.
“Nebuchadnezzar,” Crum said, citing the pagan king of Babylon who was advised by godly men to tear down an old corrupt order. “Even sometimes bad leaders are used by God.”
No spoiler on how the minister talked about Trump during the sermon.
In one hundred years when humans look back on the way we adorn our bodies in 2019, what do you think will be viewed as the most nutty?
1) High Heels
2) Neck Ties
3) Tattoos
4) Nose Rings
If I consider we are "Evolving" I suppose I'd put Nose Rings as most egregious, then Tattoos, and then probably High Heels for the harm they cause to women's toes, feet, spines, etc
If I consider that we are "Devolving" I'd put Neck Ties at the top of the list since Tat's, Nose Rings, and Hooker High Heels will be De Rigueur, whereas nobody would have any idea of whatever function a Neck Tie was ever created for.

OL,
We moved back to Southampton for his education but now that he is boarding school we don't have to be there. Now we can sell Southampton, and our investment condo down here, live in the continuing renovating house here in Florida, never shovel snow and play golf and tennis into the sunset.
Will I miss Southampton? Sure, but I can always go back and rent for a month. I only went to school there for the first 3 grades, so its not like I have life long friends. But I do have lots of friends in the Southampton Association who wanted me to run for Mayor:) Another reason to leave.

BTW, there is a real karbunckle being built on Meadow Lane, that is 60% complete and has been shut down for over a year. It is 16K sq.ft., Morrocan designed, that the Hedge Fund guy may want to tear it down and start over again. Over 2 acres on the ocean. Just an incredible building with towers, roofs, and turrets. Already spent $35 million. I should send the Press article to AOC just to make her cough on her coffee.

I just went through the digital coupons and there are a lot for brands I have never heard of, or products I wouldn't buy even if they were dirt cheap.
The big offer this week is saving $10 on a $30 pet supplies purchse, and because I have to buy a 20-lb bag of dog food, a bag of cat food, cat litter, and canned dog food, I should hit that easily.

Wasnt that the joke that set off the national reviews bluenoses when steyn mentioned it:
Great memory, Narciso. Here's was Steyn's column at Nat Review (2013) : The Age of Intolerance
Last week, following the public apology of an English comedian and the arrest of a fellow British subject both for making somewhat feeble Mandela gags, I noted that supposedly free societies were increasingly perilous places for those who make an infelicitous remark. So let’s pick up where we left off:
Here are two jokes one can no longer tell on American television. But you can still find them in the archives, out on the edge of town, in Sub-Basement Level 12 of the ever-expanding Smithsonian Mausoleum of the Unsayable. First, Bob Hope, touring the world in the year or so after the passage of the 1975 Consenting Adult Sex Bill:
“I’ve just flown in from California, where they’ve made homosexuality legal. I thought I’d get out before they make it compulsory.”#ad#
For Hope, this was an oddly profound gag, discerning even at the dawn of the Age of Tolerance that there was something inherently coercive about the enterprise. Soon it would be insufficient merely to be “tolerant” — warily accepting, blithely indifferent, mildly amused, tepidly supportive, according to taste. The forces of “tolerance” would become intolerant of anything less than full-blown celebratory approval...
Some of my comrades, who really should know better,...

Jack, still jealous that you have been able to make such decisive and sensible decisions then move to implement them.
Our Nantucket house is titled in a purposely convoluted manner designed to keep it for future generations.
Potomac is the problem. Mrs. OL really wants to sell it but, if I went along with that, she either wants to be closer to the grandkids...or someplace warm like you guys in FL.
I am the problem in that. I designed and built this house over the last 45 years as our family grew, as my wallet grew, and as our tastes changed, and it affords me endless opportunities for more "improvement projects" which I enjoy. BUT...we live in about 15% of the place, it is more of a "summer" place with all the sports facilities and gardens, massive gardens...none of which do us any good because we move to Nantucket before June 1 and return at the end of October. The only people who see the place are the maids and gardeners and meter readers...which Mrs. OL claims is a waste of perfectly good money she could be spending on the grandchildren.
And it does not seem likely either of the kids will move their families to DC so they could have the house.
Like I said.
I am jealous.

This column, Why Mark Steyn Is No Longer with National Review goes into depth on Mark's leaving and if you scroll way down you will find how National Review criticized Mark's column I linked above, and how Mark came back guns blazing. Scroll down but here's a bit of that:
Steyn wrote a great column, published on National Review Online as “The Age of Intolerance”...
Along the way, he also repeated two now-“unsayable” jokes, including “How do you make a fruit cordial?” (Read the whole thing.)
...The same day, one of National Review’s editors, Jason Lee Steorts, responded publicly with a not-so-great post in the Corner, beginning, ironically,
"I admire Mark Steyn’s gallantry in defending freedom of speech and thought, but his weekend column is less than illuminating. It seems to have been 200 percent felt and half thought."
It went downhill from there...
...Steyn: It is a matter of some regret to me that my own editor at this publication does not regard this sort of thing as creepy and repellent rather than part of the vibrant tapestry of what he calls an “awakening to a greater civility”. I’m not inclined to euphemize intimidation and bullying as a lively exchange of ideas – “the use of speech to criticize other speech”, as Mr Steorts absurdly dignifies it. So do excuse me if I skip to the men’s room during his patronizing disquisition on the distinction between “state coercion” and “cultural coercion”. . . .
I am sorry my editor at NR does not grasp the stakes. Indeed, he seems inclined to “normalize” what GLAAD is doing. But, if he truly finds my “derogatory language” offensive, I’d rather he just indefinitely suspend me than twist himself into a soggy pretzel of ambivalent inertia trying to avoid the central point — that a society where lives are ruined over an aside because some identity-group don decides it must be so is ugly and profoundly illiberal...
...as Steyn put it in April 2014, “My final appearances at National Review Online were a spat with my editor, Jason Lee Steorts . . . .”

He was Weakly Substandard. The Spain thing ended more abruptly than planned (unless I've gotten so fucking old that my concept of time is completely defunct) so whoever is manipulating his strings obviously had different plans.
To me Hayes is the most regrettable NT casualty because he did well researched and logical articles for the WS before it collectively lost its mind. Amazon backs out of massive Seattle office tower as questions swirl about growth plans
"Rainier Square was at the center of a heated tax battle between Amazon and Seattle last year that became emblematic of the company’s troubled relationship with its hometown. As Seattle considered a tax on top-grossing businesses to fund affordable housing, Amazon threatened not to move into Rainier Square, claiming the City Council’s approach “forces us to question our growth here.” Although Amazon came out on top in that dispute, its future at Rainier Square remained uncertain."

MM, I always remember how much you missed your garden and that is one of the tugs, even for Mrs. OL. I pointed a few of my color cameras so she could see the Potomac garden from Nantucket but she was not amused.

--Iggy,
A McLaren? My neighbor has one. Traded in his Lambo for it.--
If he traded in his Lambo for that McClaren he better have traded in a wheelbarrow full of c-notes too, since they're about $15-20 million now.

A-mom I just emailed you a knob & button picture.
I would post it for the gang but don't know how.

Meadows did a fine job of making her eat shit on coast-to-coast TV.
He was good, but I wish he'd pushed even more. She didn't really apologize, and I think he could have got that.
Though I guess she is technically right--she did not say "Mark Meadows is a racist."
She said "doing this, what Mark Meadows has done, is racist."
Meadows was infinitely better than the majority of his R bretheran, who would have apologized for their racist behavior.

Here you go, OL. But I have to note there is enough room to squeeze Mrs OL alongside.

Where do you get these great car pics, Iggy?
That one is perfect.
But the Morgan you posted was better.

Anyone know if you're allowed to wear personalized socks in Canadien Prisons or are they Standard Penitentiary issue?

Ig "If he traded in his Lambo for that McClaren he better have traded in a wheelbarrow full of c-notes too, since they're about $15-20 million now."
As I say so often, everything in life is a Bell Curve.
That applies to the 1% too.
I occupy the OTHER end.

OL, pretty sure that is a Morgan too, just more obscure.
Dave, a high school buddy had a Citroen DS. Damn that thing was funky weird.

Mrs. Buckeye finally caved on her gardens.
However, now that they are Jr.'s responsibility I suspect she will be spending time there this summer.
In her blood.

Old Lurker,
I have sort of overcome my grief, but let me tell you, I can still draw a complete plan of where the peony bushes were, the day lilies, the mums. I can still tell you where it was shady enough for moss, when the crab apples bloomed, when the birch tree my daughter bought me leafed out.
If you are a gardener you really learn to know the land.
What I want to do here is plant some trees, shade and flowering and maybe an evergreen, get some shrubs in along the fences, and maybe put in a perennial bed.
I did get roses planted in a bed last year, which I hope will make it through this crappy winter.
Anyway, big plans while winter hangs on....I will update as I get started.

I'll be tied up a bit tomorrow afternoon at a secret globalist rendezvous, so could we move the cocktail party back to 5:30 pm? Please do let the servers know, I'd hate for the canapes not to be fresh...
Just for clarity, I'm trying to figure out if I've ever been to a Cocktail Party. I've been to a million bars, and I always go to the Hotel Lounge when they're serving free drinks and "Or Duvrees," but does that actually count as a cocktail party or is a cocktail party something different? Was weekend at Janes in Sturbridge a Cocktail Party or was that technically a drunkfest?

On the topic of Shingles, I've never had 'em but how do you know if you have or have not had whatever causes them---is it only guys who had Chicken Pox are vulnerable, or guys who never had Chicken Pox. I have no idea if I ever had Chicken Pox and I think everybody who ever did know is long since dead.

That's a Morgan Three Wheeler, OL.
The blue one above it was a McLaren F1.
--Where do you get these great car pics, Iggy?--
Bing and/or Duck Duck Go Images.
The nice thing I've noticed, at Bing especially, which I never noticed before is, rather than looking for the right size photo or trying to resize one, most Bing [and other?] thumbnails now on the thumbnail page are perfectly sized for posting. If you copy the image location of the thumbnail and paste it here, if it has a short url that ends in "1.7" it will be a perfect fit.
Unfortunately occasionally you'll get a url that is about 300 lines of gibberish that you have to delete.

If you had chicken pox, the chicken pox herpes virus lies dormant in your nerves until it doesn't. Then it hurts.
Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | February 28, 2019 at 06:08 PM
daddy,
All of us 5 kids had chicken pox at once. My mom told us to pick one place to scratch. That is why I have a scar in the center of my forehead where I could probably place a jewel.
We also all had the old-fashioned measles at the same time. We had to stay in the lower bunks of our bunkbeds (one at each end of 2 bunks - my brother wasn't born yet) which my mom draped in blankets to shade us from light. We couldn't read or watch TV - we played with pegboards that had cars and houses and trees.
No vaccines in those days. I did NOT get mumps, although 2 sisters and my brother did. Childhood illnesses were pretty common and the treatment was sort of pioneer-like.

Hah. Mine's on on the right center of my forehead right at the top of the scar stretching up from my eyebrow where my recurve bow limb hit me.

Cocktail parties involve alcohol, plus some food--anything from some nuts in a bowl to a carving center--but NEVER a dinner plate. Shrimp frequently makes an appearance in these parts. Usually start after 5:30.
If there are dinner plates involved, you've been to a dinner party.
