Inspired by the recent Aurora IL shooting the NY Times takes a fair and balanced look at the recurring problem that our existing gun laws are not enforced. We learn that safety is neither safe nor cheap:
Still, only eight states have laws that provide an explicit mechanism so that people suspected of having guns in violation of those prohibitions are actually required to give them up. And some of those states merely allow — but do not require — the police to seek a court order to confiscate such guns.
That was the case in Illinois, where the authorities knew for more than four years that Gary Martin was a violent felon but apparently did nothing to ensure that he surrendered the laser-sighted Smith & Wesson handgun that he used to kill five co-workers in Aurora, Ill., on Friday.
...
Unlike Illinois, most states do not have an explicit process allowing the police a way to confiscate guns from people suspected of being prohibited owners. But even in those states that do, two factors explain why many police and sheriff’s departments use these laws so infrequently: time and danger.
“That’s a challenging situation for law enforcement to knock on a door and say, ‘Hey, we’re here to take your guns, Mr. Dangerous Criminal,’” said Adam Skaggs, chief counsel of the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, which advocates tighter gun laws.
Well, yes, police work can be dangerous. Showing up after a shooting is not so threatening physically, but then again, showing up with a shooting is also dangerous - six officers were injured in the Aurora shoot-out, so danger deferred is not always danger denied.
As to budgets:
But when Illinois lawmakers sought to tighten state law so that the police would be mandated to confiscate guns owned by people barred from possessing them, or at least verify that the guns had been transferred to legal owners, concerns about manpower helped doom the proposal.
“Law enforcement didn’t object to the essence of the law,” but said they would need far more money to carry it out, said State Representative Kathleen Willis, a Democrat from suburban Chicago who is pushing to toughen the law.
Freedom isn't free and safety isn't cheap.
And, on to a fact-check. This one becomes Blue-on-Blue. The Times quotes a Brady spokesperson:
One in five gun purchases is estimated to occur with no background check, such as through sales over the internet or at gun shows, said Kris Brown, president of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. That attracts buyers who would fail a check.
“You’d have to assume that if you are a prohibited purchaser, you are aware of that loophole, and that’s how you’re going to get a gun,” Ms. Brown said.
Do note the word "purchases", which ought to be "transfers". Here is the 2017 study, but Politifact has already tackled this:
The fact checks, and experts we contacted, instead cited a study authored by researchers from Northeastern and Harvard universities that was published in January 2017. They did an online survey, in 2015, of 1,613 adult gun owners.
Among gun owners who said they obtained their most recent gun within the two previous years:
-
-
22 percent overall said they obtained the guns without a background check. But that includes guns that were purchased or received in another way, such as through a gift or an inheritance.
-
-
-
13 percent who purchased firearms -- for example, from a friend or online -- said they had done so without a background check.
-
The lower figure applies here, given that Bullock’s claim is about gun sales.
Blue-on-blue. And let's note that the unchecked purchases includes family, friends and acquaintances as well as gun shows and online. In fact, a quick glance at the relevant table tells me that family, friends and acquaintance transfers outnumber the online and gun show transfers. Of course, thugs and nut jobs have friends and family too.
As to the infamous gun show loophole, per this survey, 4% of transfers in the past two years were at gun shows, with no one claiming to gave avoided a background check. Not exactly the point the Brady person made.
Or maybe I'm wrong - just read the dates above. Hmm. I guess the "stalling out" was between Senate and House. Why hasn't the House taken it up yet?

I am positive Obama had had the speech he delivered in Charleston after the white crazy slaughtered the black prayer group waiting in his drawer. We did talk about the SMallett case which she thought was a tragedy and I filled them in on the Harris connections etc. which she didn't believe, so I told her to look it up.
Anyway, she got up to go to the restroom leaving me with her younger sister. I said to her, "Well, I know you guys didn't vote for him, but I did and I love President Trump."
The younger sister says to me quietly, "I voted for him too, but don't tell my sister or she would be furious at me." HA!!
There are a lot of quiet Trump supporters.

Someone needs to explain how big pharma is to blame. ‘Cause so far I ain’t buyin’ it. There are numerous illicit sources.
If you Google Purdue, you can read al about it. Basically, they lied about Oxycontin's half life, saying it was 12 hours when it was only eight, pitching it as a twice a day NON ADDICTING (lie #2) source of pain relief. Funded all kinds of "research" and seminars by "pain experts" who made it sound like it was a physician's moral obligation to prescribe it for chronic pain, and had no downside, since it wasn't addicting. They pumped it in to small rural towns by the truck loads. Pushed the concept of pain as a fifth vital sign, which needed to be relieved. Sure, NOW people are using stuff from other sources, but Purdue did all they could to create a nation of opioid dependent Americans.
The attorney who won the Big Tobacco suit is suing them. I have no doubt he'll win.
Yes, nobody holds a gun to a user's head and makes them use. But most of us could become addicted under the right conditions, and Purdue actively created just those conditions for thousands of people.
Posted by: anonamom | February 21, 2019 at 02:23 PM
Yeah, I think they're relieved to have come up with some kind of monetary motive so they can stop looking for other possible motives.

The opiod crisis is very complex. It exploded with the street level dealers and the smugglers who rose in the 60's and 70's (French Connection/mob) and the toll even then was bad. I lost 3 acquaintances within a week to OD's back when I was working part time on Wall Street. A lot of the crime in NYC was drugs driven. It has been re-hashed time and again in the movies.
What happened in the 1990's was that pain management became a hot topic. Clinics opened all over the country prescribing all sorts of opioids. Purdue Pharma (the Sackler Family) was extremely aggressive in its marketing to doctors about the wonders of oxycontin. It was a panacea, non-addictive, etc. But all of the producers did the same.
It was all bullshit. Oxycontin is expensive at $70-80/pill. Heroin is $7/bindle and achieves a similar effect except that the addiction grows day by day. The was no regulation of the pill mills and Florida-Appalachia became a huge opiod highway.
When the cartels saw higher demand they naturally filled in. They now run as businesses in many places. Dealers and pushers have salaries and regular hours. It is very sophisticated. It is in the inner cities that the gangs fight for turf.
Tijuana now has 2,000+ homicides/year, almost all of them now related to the local drug culture. 10 years ago the homicide rate was maybe 300/year. The associated violence is hideous.
Where it is regulated you don' see those levels. I don't remember too many deals gone bad or turf wars where I live, which is the home of the Mexican Mafia, who are tied to the cartels. They lock it down or someone ends up in a shallow grave in the desert or a car trunk in LA.
The addicts and dealers have signs and signals to communicate. In Newport Beach the parking lot of a very high end grocery store is a. major retail market and the normies don't even know it.
LE just locks them up and then dumps them out of the county jail if it is minor possession. Prop 47 killed a lot of the incentive to go into treatment. Now simple possession or low level crime under $995 is a misdemeanor.
We were very happy over Christmas that our daughter was locked up for a few weeks pending drug court for identity theft, which is a felony. She is supposed to enter treatment in early March and I hope she makes it. She has been through treatment 7-8 times so far.
The indescribable crime to me was when Purdue Pharma decided to be a front to finish provider and began marketing suboxone, which is an opioid meant to wean users off opioids over an extended period. That is some kind of lowlife scummery as far as I'm concerned.
It is a massive tar baby. Addiction, homelessness, mental illness and incarceration are a revolving door. This is one of the things we are trying to fix by taking a holistic approach. In the long run it is a lot less expensive and saves lives.

Jussie has 5 siblings who all act. The Smollett family’s big break came in 1994 with a show called On Our Own, starring comedian Ralph Louis HARRIS as the older brother who took care of all the kids after the death of their parents, oh and dressed in drag
On the day Empire premiered, Jussie’s father died at age 58. There is a well-documented trend amongst Hollywood celebrities of a family death occurring just before a would be actor, singer or entertainer ‘levels up,’ in a major way in their career.
(Jussie’s parents Joel Smollett and Janet HARRIS Smollett met in the Bay Area while hanging out with Black Panthers during the civil rights era. Coincidentally, Kamala HARRIS is from the Bay Area as well. Her father Donald HARRIS has been a professor at Stanford since the 70s ")

Jussie Smollett’s intended Hollywood timeline:
-Be a child actor on a show with a cross-dressing black male comedian.
-Come out as gay on Ellen.
-Make the B-list.
-Shill for left wing Washington establishment.
-Be the victim of a racist homophobic attack.
-Make the A-list.

BREAKING: McCabe said Rosenstein sought out Comey's advice on who to appoint as special counsel, even though Comey had been fired & Rosenstein had signed the letter recommending Comey's firing. In effect,Comey picked his old pal Mueller, along with Mueller's old briefer, McCabe.

Yikes, it's been quite an afternoon. A work colleague's 15 year old daughter was with her at the library today and has gone missing. We searched the entire building and neighboring buildings and the police are here. We finally got her on camera leaving the building, alone, at 12:45. That's almost three hours ago. It's a busy, urban campus (50,000 students).
I got the sense that this might not be the first time something like this has happened, and that she is on medication for a mental health issue.
I hope she is just out exploring and not realizing that her mother is worried to death. The girl does not have a phone, which is unusual for her age.
Please pray if you are so inclined.

Porchlight,
Prayers offered.
I still worry if my kids (age 50 and 40) don't get home on time. I cannot imagine this level of concern!

Howie Carr just mentioned that there will be a new House Election in North Carolina in that District where the Repub Candidate has been accused of Voter Fraud.

Daddy:
It seems the Repub candidate should have informed election officials of the irregularities.
I think we are going to lose yet another House seat to the Dems.

Somebody is over at Althouse pretending to be Narciso, but from the erudition, eloquence, and lack of typos it is an obvious sock puppet:
I've noted this in the past daddy--it's amazing how articulate he is when he posts for the professor. I always understand what he writes there. He gave me some feeble explanation when I asked him why he won't do the same here.

(Sheriff) Clarke also said he “can’t wait” for the FBI to announce federal charges against Smollett for mailing a “hoax letter” to the television studio, noting that it’s a crime punishable by five to 10 years in federal prison.
“Can’t wait for the FBI to hold their news conference to announce FEDERAL CHARGES against @JussieSmollett for mailing that hoax letter to the studio. That is MAIL FRAUD punishable by 5-10 years in federal prison. Don’t turn away from this folks or it will go away. #MAGA2020,” Clarke tweeted.
Thank you, Sheriff Clarke.

Privacy is really gone in our country.
Bank records taken, hacked computers, illegal spying,
Releasing confidential divorce records and people spilling all their secrets on Facebook.
I practically live off the grid in comparison.

Great point on Smollett by a Caller to Howie:
Caller: This is ridiculous. I've been watching this open up... FOX is wondering if they're going to fire him (Jussie). Were they so worried about Roseanne? Look at what happend to Roseanne...
Howie: I know. Exactly! She made a joke and she was out like within 24 hours...

Sorry for failing in my duty to keep you abreast of our state Board of Election hearing outcome today.
After the winner Mark Harris's son (who is now an assistant US Attorney for eastern Carolina) testified yesterday that he repeatedly gave his dad a heads up about the operative (who the Ds had employed FOR YEARS) being a shady character, and turning over emails that son assumed his dad had produced but hadn't, dad today had to answer questions as to why he didn't listen to his son.
"Because I am his dad, and know him to be judgemental, and a bit arrogant."
I LOVED that!
"But I now see that he was right." Good dad.
(Dad's a minister of one of those mega churches, btw. No surprise to me he'd raise a judgey, arrogant kid.)
So, after that public humiliation, the duly elected R winner did what Rs always do---caved, and asked for a new election.
Even though the number of possibly tainted harvested absentee votes wouldn't make a difference.
No way can he win now. I won't vote for the wimp.
I hope our former mayor and governor, Pat McCrory will step up and run. Though I am not sure he lives in our district.
