Cocaine Mitch brings the crowd to its feet with his plan to bring the Ocasio-Cortez/Markey Green New Deal resolution to the Senate for a floor vote. How far out is that "plan"? The NY Times today presents an "ambitious" plan to achieve half as much in three times as long. Whoa, that is quite a gap between AOC and her cheerleaders - next time they might want to agree to appear in the same stadium.
Meanwhile, Sen. Markey cries foul!
Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) accused Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) of trying to “sabotage” and “silence” voters by bringing the Green New Deal, which was also proposed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), to the Senate floor to vote on.
Uh huh. Voting on the bill is "sabotage". And if Trump were to sign it Pelosi would probably view it as an impeachable offense (mental incapacity?!?). What's Markey's message, "Stop me before I speak again"?
Now, let me have a To Be Fair moment: Markey might have envisioned committee hearings, expert testimony, and a chance to build public support for his pandering left-wing dreamscape. After which the bill would die in committee, where only a few sacrificial lambs from the Democratic side would have to stand and be slaughtered counted. But, ooops - now they will all have a chance at Auto-beclownment.
So, a possible dodge - Markey and the Dem Senate leadership could pull a page from the Mitch-Fu playbook and filibuster their own bill. Would that be even more embarrassing? Do these guys (and gals!) even know what embarrassment is anymore?
WHEN YOU'VE LOST THE TIMES: To give a sense of the uphill battle Markey and AOC face on this, let's segue to the NY Times, which has an interactive display outlining seven "ambitious" plans that could, together, cut US greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050. (50 by 50? That could soundbite! I'd give it a 50/50 chance... Now ask me about "Fifty-four Forty or fight"!)
First of all, 2050? The "goal" in the Markey/Ocasio-Cortez fantasy seems to be for the US to be net-zero at the end of their ten year plan, so maybe 2030 (my emphasis):
Resolved, That it is the sense of the House of Representatives that—
1. it is the duty of the Federal Government to create a Green New Deal—
A. to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions through a fair and just transition for all communities and workers;
...
2. the goals described in subparagraphs (A) through (E) of paragraph (1) (referred to in this resolution as the ‘‘Green New Deal goals’’) should be accomplished through a 10-year national mobilization (referred to in this resolution as the ‘‘Green New Deal mobilization’’) that will require the following goals and projects—
A. building resiliency against climate change-related disasters, such as extreme weather, including by leveraging funding and providing investments for community-defined projects and strategies;
B. repairing and upgrading the infrastructure in the United States, including— by eliminating pollution and greenhouse gas emissions as much as technologically feasible; by guaranteeing universal access to clean water; by reducing the risks posed by flooding and other climate impacts; and by ensuring that any infrastructure bill considered by Congress addresses climate change;
C. meeting 100 percent of the power demand in the United States through clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources, including—
The first two steps of the NY Times plans include a carbon tax and a push for zero emissions power including nuclear. Carbon taxes are poo-poohed in the AOC FAQ. Nuclear is ducked in the resolution but is treated like a cow (a flatulent cow, not a sacred one) in the FAQs - kill 'em!

Well the Green New Deal FAQ document lays out there on the ground like a fresh, steaming moose turd. And Senator Markey has discovered the age old truth that there is no way to pick up a turd by the clean end. And McConnell is asking him to pick it up. And Markey says, "No way Jose, it's not my job." Well Senator Markey you introduced the legislation described by the FAQ. You dealt it--it's all yours (with a little help from AOC).

I've had a hard time keeping up lately due to work.
Since I rarely can opine on a subject I know of, I've been itching to get caught up and opine on the topic of induction cooktops which was brought up a thread or two ago.
Got one during a kitchen update about 5 years ago.
The new has not worn off.
It's amazing.
You can be boiling 8 qts of water, remove the pot, put your hand on the burner and the only thing you'll feel is residual heat from the boiling water. Move the pot back over the burner and it instantly starts boiling again.
My wife generally will place a paper towel between a cast iron skillet/griddle and the burner so she doesn't scratch the glass top. The paper towel remains unfazed by the encounter and is perfectly usable afterwards.
If you want to boil water it takes about 90 seconds. 2 quart saucepan? 8 quart stockpot? It doesn't matter. Mass seems irrelevant. It will literally put the 'minute' in you MinuteRice.
My burners have a hold, 1-10 and a powerboost setting. The heat control is the exact same everytime you use it regardless of the size of the pan. Heat control is precise. It works the same way each time. There is a learning curve but once you've cooked a few times it's way easier to control than a traditional electric or gas.
All I know is that it uses magnetism. We bought a couple of stockpots last month and as we shopped my wife applied a magnet to the bottom of each pot and if it stuck, it was a candidate for purchase.

induction cooking.
You can buy one to operate on your countertop or an entire rangetop.

The old school/conventional ranges or cooktops, with the regular, exposed spiral shaped resistance heating elements are still available, but clearly not very popular.
Glass top units with induction heating or conventional resistance type elements (mounted under the glass) are mostly what you will see for electric.
The resistance style look sleek, but since the glass gets hot, spills are sometimes challenging to clean up.
Induction best of both worlds, but pot and pan choices are more limited.

When their current 5th generation fighter runs on a 4th generation engine. And their 5th generation engines explode after a few hours of use.
Foreign analysts expect that a US F-15 or F-18 latest models, 4th generation fighters, can take out a Chinese J-20. Never mind an F-22 "Raptor."

Narciso,
I remember the Sino-Vietnamese War. It was a short affair, less than a month, with heavy casualties on both sides if I remember correctly.
The cause of the war was even weirder. North Vietnam, more or less, installed Pol Pot as the leader of Cambodia. Pol Pot then hooked up with China as a client-state.
After the US left the Vietnam war, Pol Pot sent raiding parties into Vietnam.
Vietnam invaded Cambodia to stop it and I remember the US was confused about the whole thing. Like who to root for.
That's when China attacked Vietnam to get them out of their Cambodian client-state. China didn't achieve that goal.
Both China and Vietnam declared victory, but both dis-engaged.
I presume Vietnam sent its' best troops to Cambodia and fought China with less capable troops and irregulars. A guerilla war as soon as the the Chicoms came across the border.
The Chinese also battled India in 1962 and 1867, but I can't think of any land battle after the one with Vietnam. Large deployments to the Russia border after that.
No sea battles before the age of steam. No air battles.
I'm sure they study past battles, but that doesn't mean they no how to fight a new battle.
During the American Civil War we had observers from many European countries present and, yet, WWI was a repeat of Civil War tactics with trench warfare.

Stove top grates are cast iron, so much easier to clean than enamel. I mostly just knock the chunks off with a sponge. Stove has 3 large grates and 5 burners that end up needing cleaning. It would be so much simpler to wipe down the stove top.
sbwaters, yeah, keeping food in the pot and off the stove top is the ultimate goal. Let's just say I have room for improvement. Pots that simmer and spit bits of juice are another source of schmutz. Don't even mention frying anything up top. I cook bacon in the oven so that I don't have to clean up grease splatters.
My counter top induction hot plate is 1800 W, which is probably as big you can get and still plug into an ordinary 115 V outlet. Next time I'm in the thrift store I will pick up some steel and cast iron pots. All of mine are SS and don't pass the magnet test, except for my double boiler.
