I'm skeptical about the reason given for the demise of balloon framing.
Doug fir is the most common structural wood used in America and the standard length of logs from the woods is minimally 33' and longer lengths are also very common. Making 20' studs is not now and never was a problem for the lumber mills.

Relinking to make a followup point. The Jeff Carlson article:
https://www.theepochtimes.com/nine-days-in-may-the-quiet-struggle-between-rosenstein-and-mccabe_2733363.html
Five days after McCabe lied to the IG, on Aug. 2, 2017, Rosenstein secretly issued Mueller a revised Scope of Investigation & Definition of Authority memo that remains heavily redacted.
Something else significant happened in early August.
https://www.cnn.com/2017/08/04/politics/trump-white-house-renovations/index.html
On August 4, 2017 is when major White House renovations began. I remember reading some articles back during that timeframe that hinted at one of the major reasons for the renovations is that Trump knew or expected the FBI had bugged the White House and was listening in on conversations. Remember earlier in May 2017 is when Trump issued the warning to Comey that he better hope there were no tapes of their conversations before he leaked to the press. This was interpreted by some as an indication Trump knew the FBI had bugged the White House and listened in on the private meetings Trump and Comey had prior to his firing.
McCabe got caught lying to Horowitz in late July 2017. Rosenstein adds scope that is still classified to the Mueller SC on August 2, 2017. Two days later major renovations to the WH start on August 4, 2017. I think the chances are pretty high that all of those events are directly connected in some manner.

Posted by: henry | February 15, 2019 at 10:36 AM
Iggy, I got that straight from my old time builder pals circa 1970 on the east coast. It was confirmed personally when I built a house early 70's that tied into a hundred year old balloon framed original house that we wanted to match. The long studs just cost too much compared to two shorter ones, and the fire marshall had all sorts of extra requirements.
Maybe their suppliers were behind the price spikes for the longer lengths, and for sure the early 70's was when fire codes figured out about fire blocking.
So "back east" I stand on those two reasons for not using balloon framing anymore.

Posted by: Narciso79 | February 15, 2019 at 10:46 AM
--The long studs just cost too much compared to two shorter ones, and the fire marshall had all sorts of extra requirements.--
That's a matter of economic efficiency not availability and I think that is partly a chicken and egg scenario. Building codes changed [fire blocking is not exactly a new or even 60 year old idea] and extra long studs have always cost more because you can't make them out of odds and ends and they're harder to handle in the mill, harder to cut and harder to transport.
Just as balloon framing drove out timber framing because it was cheaper and simpler, platform framing did the same to balloon framing.
I can still drive down to Lowes right now and buy 50 20 foot 2x4s and 2x6s if I need them.

I may be 4D spitballing but I suspect Trump is afraid they might NOT override his veto. I think he grew frustrated that what he wanted to do wasn't getting done during the shutdown and he wants to avoid another one. His goal is a wall and there was no clear path to one through the shutdown route so he abandons it for another more promising one.

I can get them too, Iggy, just almost never need them anymore. So they are available, true.
And this "cheaper and simpler, platform framing did the same to balloon framing."
...is true for sure, especially as the average skill level of framing crews was transformed (in the east anyway) from old timers with real skills using real hammers, to youngsters who can't drive a nail unless it is in a nail gun. We used to marvel that young framers never got their cuts exactly right and the geezers always did; geezer told me "try driving a nail into the foot of a stud if the cut was a tad short using a hammer...with a nail gun it works even if daylight shows through the joint."

Definitely truth to that.
1) However, it's also true that many of these RINOs won while pledging to repeal OCare, yet didn't. So, they were elected by these theoretically squishy voters despite claiming conservative positions.
2) Even if a district is not conservative, Repubs will eventually notice they can't win without conservative votes and make accommodations. No?

A few months ago we attended a presentation on our school district's math approach. This being Silicon Valley, it was a packed room with roughly equal numbers of white, Indian and Asian parents. The parents had been educated in many countries and various US states and it was striking to see all of us looking at each other with "WTF" expressions.
Certainly it is not just native born white parents who are aghast.

Referring to that unfunny dumbass cartoon instead of making a fact based coherent argument is what really pisses me off. And I don't agree with Iggy's argument that there are large areas where a conservative message just can't win. Maybe that's true but until someone points out where a reasonably charismatic candidate running a coherent conservative campaign gets rolled, I'm just viewing that as more rationalizing by the Rove types for the GOP being an ideologically incoherent party which immediately turned away from what produced landslides for Reagan by unilaterally declaring, based on nothing, that the Reagan Democrats don't exist. Really? Did they all die? Trump seemed to find them.
I'm just not rolling over and accepting lazy arguments used to rationalize running poor campaigns. Reagan won in a landslide while Goldwater lost in one 16 years apart. Maybe it's as simple as one was a better candidate.
